Create A Clan- V.4

Just a little fun for when you have time to kill

Newleaf
Leafbare has come to a close and snow has begun to melt. Rain is more common which may lead to floods in water-based or low-lying territories. Prey is only just beginning to return although kittings will run smoother and the chances of queens or kits dying during birth will begin to drop. Loners, too, are beginning to explore clan territories which makes the odds of finding new cats higher than it otherwise would be.

Announcements
I am going to start giving fewer cats on patrols to clans with 70+ cats in preparation for the next update!

other news;
Aloeleap gazed at his sleeping mate, curled around the four helpless kits that she had yet to leave. This was the second litter in a row that Poppysong had only had one kit in. It was pretty devastating for the mother. She loved Mallardclaw, and loved her adopted kits, shellfog and gullwing, who she had taken in after their mother had died, but she still wanted a big family. Aloeleap didn’t know what to do, or what to even tell his mate. Bugkit was sweet though, especially gentle and curious, and he was so glad to have another son in his life.

Aloeleap smiled gently as Poppysong’s eyes slowly opened and connected his, she murmured, “Looks like all four are going to make it. It’s new leaf, you know!” Aloeleap smiled at her.

“Yeah, seems like it. Has Branchnose been by? He’s been oddly avoiding contact with everyone around him?” Aloeleap finished with a question, the tom had been pretty elusive lately, especially when it came to his newborn kits, who were starting to explore the caverns.

Poppysong sighed, “No, not at all. He’s missing out on everything though, the kits are getting pretty big. And Crowkit is seriously protective of his little sister’s, especially from Alfalfakit and Avalanchekit. Those boys love to play rough, it’s so funny that Crowkit is like their guardian!”

Aloeleap smiled, “That’s really neat! He’s going to be a great warrior and father one day!”

Poppysong said, “Yeah, I agree. He’s going to be amazing.”

--

Meanwhile, back in the medicine cat den, Branchnose was hiding himself away from the world. He had known that him and his mate having kits wouldn’t make the head medicine cat, Badgerheart happy, but what he didn’t realize was that it would make all the other medicine cats really annoyed. They loved all kits, but somehow his always seemed to be the last ones getting checked on.

He realized that if he wanted them to get treated fairly in the clan, and not as outcasts, he would have to not be apart of their lives. He turned towards Mallowpool, who had been effectively ignoring him for the past month. “Mallowpool, I’m renouncing those kits. They aren’t mine. I’ll do it in front of the entire clan so they will have a normal life.”

Mallowpool’s head turned, “It’s what’s best for them. Starclan will view them as normal cats then, sons and daughters of Aloeleap and Poppysong, although everyone will know differently.”

Branchnose sighed, “I didn’t think it would be such a big deal, me and Lilacscent having kits, you know.”

Mallowpool shook his head, “Salmonstar let it happen because you came in that way. But he made it clear to you not to have kits. Whitherstar had not had time to let you know the same, and hadn’t gotten around to it.”

Branchnose shook his head, and continued to sort the raspberry leaves, “I know. I just thought, me and lilacscent, could endure it together. A team. A family.”

Mallowpool rolled his eyes, “You know the code. You know the laws. You knew.”

Newleaf- Leafbare was long and harsh, claiming the lives of many Clan cats and even prey. Just as prey started to become nearly impossible to find, the clouds parted and the sun shined down for the first time in moons. The prey has come out to greet the sun and melting snow, coaxing the Clan cats out of their camps as well.

Very soon, a few new features will be added onto the front. I would personally advise that you either stop sending out patrols for new cats or to lessen your numbers to make the new features easier on your Clans.

None of the Clayclan cats could explain how a river that was little more than a trickle could grow to flood the treeline in less than three sunrises. The water level had risen slowly enough for everyone to evacuate safely but it was more ominous for it. The fog and the drizzle from a moon ago had vanished for a pawful of sunrises, enough to make the cats believe Newleaf had truly driven out the Leafbare chill, only for the storm and fog to return with a steady, but renewed, vigor.

"Everyone's accounted for Resinstar," Gustpond reported. "Driftstep and Taffytuft are certain they have all our herbs and prey," Crocusgaze added, "We won't lose anything to the river." "That's good to hear." Resinstar didn't hide his sigh of relief. As unused to as he was to being reported to delegating jobs to other cats made things a lot easier. "I was thinking," Crocusgaze broke into Resinstar's silent congratulatory party for himself at finally acting leaderly unceremoniously, "we might want to invest some time into reinforcing the bushes around here. We don't know when this storm will lighten up; we might as well set up some shelters." She shot a pointed glance over her shoulder as if to invite Gustpond to try and one up her. "That's a-" "I can-" began both Resinstar and Gustpond at the same time. The two toms let out a bit of awkward laughter. Gustpond gestured for the leader to go ahead. "That sounds like a good plan to me Crocusgaze." "And I can round up a few cats to do it." Resinstar nodded his assent to the dripping, grey warrior. "Water we waiting for then? The sooner we get dens sorted the sooner we can get out of this weather." The trio chuckled and split off in various directions.

Resinstar ducked under the leafless canopy of a nearby beech. It was far from ideal but at least he wasn't immediately soaking again once he shook out his fur. "We must weather the weather whether it's our pleasure or not," Claywhistle teased. It was easy for him to make puns despite the gloomy atmosphere- water fell right through his translucent pelt. "You seem to finally be stepping into this role. No complaints about wanting to chase after rocks?" Resinstar stuck a tongue out at his old friend. "Not in this weather. I couldn't find a twoleg's monster in this fog, even if it was as loud as Moosetrack's snores and Starclan themselves guided me." Claywhistle let out a belly-laugh. "You think Moosetracks is bad? Try sharing a den with Frostsong." "I'd rather do that then go out on a night like this-"

"-Who knows what could be out there?" Webwing pleaded with Fogpaw, but the apprentice remained unperturbed. "I do. It's two cats and they're lost. You saw it in the webs as well as I did." Fogpaw set his jaw defiantly. Driftstep's parsley had done wonders for alleviating Fogpaw's pain and replacing it with what Webwing personally considered one of the more prevalent tom secondary characteristics: foolish bravado. For a moment the incorporeal warrior considered lying to his friend, saying he had made a mistake and the spiderwebs that he and Fogpaw had read did not in fact foretell of lost travelers. "The lifelines were all over the place Fogpaw, we can't be sure they weren't faulty." Even before he finished saying it, Webwing regretted it. "There's no such thing as faulty fortunes, only faulty interpretations," Fogpaw recited, quoting one of Webwing's phrases. "If a web looks unnatural it's supposed to look unnatural. I'm right about this. I'm sure of it." Looking down at the small, dripping calico Webwing sighed. Far be it from him to deny a foolish decision to follow one's heart when his whole life had been a never ending series of them. "Fine. Let's-" Fogpaw didn't wait for him to finish before he was sprinting away.

"You're far too fast for a half-blind cat in the fog," Webwing panted when he finally caught up to Fogpaw. As a ghost he didn't technically need to breathe but there was something about it that made him feel more grounded. "I know where I need to go," Fogpaw replied vaguely. And he certainly seemed to. As moonhigh set in, somewhere unseen above the canopy, Webwing and Fogpaw maneuvered through the clinging fog to a destination unknown. Suddenly Fogpaw stopped and the trance-like seriousness that had previously overcome him seemed to fade away. "Ah guppies," he sighed, all at once ten moons again. "There's four of them. Why can't I even get simple numbers right?" As Fogpaw took a grumble break, as even the cheeriest of apprentices are apt to do after moonhigh, Webwing peered through the fog, trying to make out the shapes Fogpaw claimed to see. There was one, a tall silhouette that might have been a rather cat-like shrub- but oh! It was certainly moving, and now he could just make out a smaller shadow tailing the lager one. His eyes began to hurt from trying to pick out the other two cats. "There's definitely only two Fogpaw." "No," Fogpaw insisted, confusion overcoming his frustration. "That's definitely four. Watch. Hey guys!" he yowled suddenly, "Are you lost?"

If the definition of lost was not knowing where one was then Tawnymoon certainly qualified. She had tried to retrace her steps in her mind. Badgers, spurred on by a harsh leafbare, had attacked Blueclan and she had gone to Beechclan for help. Then the blizzard had enveloped her and Tawnystar had lost her way, growing more and more numb until she could no longer feel the ground beneath her feet. But all at once the feeling came rushing back and she stood, vacant eyed, in the warm pouring rain. When her eyes refocused Tawnystar found herself face to face with an orange and white japanese bobtail. Or perhaps more accurately, face in face. "Hey there!" greeted the shecat as Tawnystar stumbled backwards in shock. "You're the Blueclan leader right? Tanstar or something like that?" The bobtail chuckled, ears twitching merrily. "You'll have to excuse me, I'm still no good at this clan stuff. Honeyfur claims I'm ignorant on purpose but she loves me anyways. Oops! I wasn't supposed to say that!" She winked, covering her muzzle with a paw in over the top coyness. "She also says I'm an oversharer." Tawnystar, thankfully, had had enough experience with kits to keep up with the chattiness of her new encounter. "Anyways," the shecat continued, "If you're Tanstar-" "Tawnystar." "Ah, see! Bad memory. Anyways if this is Blueclan I'm in the absolute wrong place. You wouldn't happen to know how to find Thicketclan from here? I'm supposed to be meeting- wait- no- this isn't right-"

Tawnystar watched in fascinated horror as the shecat before her started flickering in and out of existence. The ghost- that's what she had to be- clutched her vibrating paws to her head and let out a painful shriek. Flashing in and out, faster and faster, Tawnystar was certain the ghost would explode, but that wouldn't stop her from helping a cat in pain. "Focus on me." Tawnystar struggled to keep her mew from shaking. "Listen to the sound of my voice." Wasn't that what Mallowpool always said? Mallowpool. The thought of him made Tawnystar flash with guilt. But the trick worked, and Tawnystar tried to focus on that instead. The bobtail gradually stopped flickering and instead settled into a dull throb, barely noticeable. "That was weird." Her mew was shaky but still impressively under control given the past few heartbeats. "I'll second that."

"You're Beechclan right?" Tawnystar had inquired of her newfound companion after she had recovered from her episode. The bobtail appeared familiar, Tawnystar rarely forgot a face, but due to the fog, or maybe her ghostly nature, there was no distinguishable scent. The shecat nodded and opened her mouth again, but before she could launch into another unrelated anecdote Tawnystar spoke up. "Thank goodness," she sighed, some of her forgotten panic resurfacing, "I need to talk to Sorrelstar right away. Blueclan is under attack." "Well why didn't you say so?" The ghost exclaimed, seeming to forget the extenuating circumstances of the past few heartbeats, "I'll take you to her right away. Except, uh, you wouldn't happen to know where she might be would you?"

"I'll ask you again- where's my sister?" Ivypaw, all eight moons of her, glared down the adult tom before her. No matter her personal grudge against Poppypaw she didn't want her sister to get hurt. A shame it took all of a coup, or whatever it was that had caused such mass chaos, to get her to admit that to herself. "I already told you," the tom- but he was a calico? A shecat with a really deep voice?- growled, "I don't know anything about any coup or any Aspenclan. Just leave me alone." Ivypaw shot another glare in the suspect's direction. She still wasn't sure that this cat hadn't lead to her clan's demise. "Fine. I don't need your help anyways." "You didn't ask for it, you just started accusing me." With a haughty sniff that conveyed more confidence than Ivypaw felt the apprentice stalked off into the fog. And she walked, and she walked, and she walked, and she walked some more. Through the never ending fog, until she wound up back where she had begun. "Back again are you?" "How are you doing this?" "I'm not," the older cat snapped back. "Just chill out would you? Your pacing is making me anxious." Ivypaw kept pacing for a few more heartbeats just to drive home a point before finally settling down. She tucked her paws beneath her chest and waited for whatever this weather was to pass. And she waited, and waited, and waited.

"No we're just taking a stroll," was the first thing that popped out of Ivypaw's mouth when the apprentice, whom she later learned to be Fogpaw, came upon her, Brushfire, and Tawnystar. Even when he and his "ghost" Webwing, which Ivypaw still wasn't sure what was about, lead the group out of the creeping fog and into the blessed, physical rain she did not let her gratitude be known. However long she had been stuck in that limbo it had been enough to cool her panic and cement her resentment. She did not ask about Aspenclan or Poppypaw until she appeared.

"Ivypaw?" The duck she had clenched between her teeth tumbled to Mottledfoot's paws. She couldn't believe it, she almost didn't, but there was her little sister standing before her looking not a day older than she remembered her. "That's me," her sister acknowledged a heartbeat too late. She seemed to be looking past Mottledfoot. "You grew." "You didn't." Ivypaw seemed to refocus for a moment, drawing herself up to her full height. "Thanks for reminding me," she replied wryly. The words seemed to tumble out of Mottledfoot's mouth all at once. "Where were you? It's so good to see you! Is Cloudmask with you? Poppypaw? How are you still so young?" Through the bombardment of questions Ivypaw seemed to be zoning out until Poppypaw was mentioned. "Why's it always about her?" Mottledfoot swore she heard her mumble under her breath. "Never mind. I'm just really glad you're here now." "Yeah, me too." Ivypaw's mew was stiff and it broke Mottledpaw's heart. "Do you want me to show you around?" She offered hopefully. "Maybe later," was the half hearted response she received. As Ivypaw skulked off to Starclan knows where Flaxpool lay a semi-solid tail across Mottledfoot's shoulders in comfort. "Give her time," the ghost advised, "She hasn't had as much time to adjust as you." Mottledfoot nodded mournfully. "I'm going to put this back," she gestured vaguely at the duck, "I'm not that hungry." Flaxpool didn't say anything, just nodded thoughtfully. Somehow that made everything worse.

"Hey Taffytuft!" Gustpond called out to his friend, tone cheery, if a little stilted, despite the gloomy weather. "You want to take a walk?" Taffytuft glanced up from where she lay, curled under a Juniper bush to avoid the steady drizzle. "I don't know," she mewed hesitantly, "My fur doesn't do well in the rain." Gustpond had a hard time imagining Taffytuft looking anything but perpetually stunning. "Er, well," he stuttered and then recovered, "We could look for mushrooms? They like rain and all-" "You had me at mushrooms!" Taffytuft had indeed shot to her paws as soon as Gustpond had introduced the idea and internally the tom breathed a sigh of relief. He listened to Taffytuft go on about the various fungi she had seen on her twolegs' magic box. "They were very into nature," she had happily told him, "and even though I'm clan now, I have to agree everything's much nicer on the magic box. Less mud that way." Taffytuft didn't seem to mind the mud between her paws despite that. Gustpond was too worried about what he was going to say next to even notice.

"This one's a lady veil," Taffytuft informed Gustpond as she bent to gently pick the mushroom with her teeth. "Careful it might be poisonous," he fretted. Taffytuft just laughed. "It's too pretty to be dangerous." She was right, it was a very beautiful sight. A slender white stalk veiled in a cascading white mesh and dotted with rain drops. Not for the first time Gustpond was struck with and understanding of why Taffytuft collected things as she did. The world was a unique and lovely sight when viewed through her eyes. When he saw it like she did he was certain this world could never hurt him. But the past had taught him better than that. It made his stomach hurt. "You alright?" Taffytuft asked through a mouthful of mushroom. "I'm fine. Just- can I tell you a story?" Taffytuft nodded and dropped her prize besides a growing collection of indigo milkcaps, turkey tail, and morels. "Go on."

It had started a day like any other on the docks. The other tradewind cats, those that made there home in the shipyard of the same name, had gone fishing for the day, as usual. Gustpond was in charge of his sibling's kits, also as usual. As the self appointed "cool uncle" Gustpond took it upon himself to make his nieces and nephews' days fun, and this time he was going to knock it out of the proverbial park. "Today adventurers, we will be making our maiden voyage," he had announced to the assembled kits in his ever popular pirate accent. The kits cheered and clambered onto the fishing vessel that Gustpond had told them so much about, eager as anything to visit the high seas they had heard so much about from their uncle. For a time after Gustpond had argued his innocence internally on the basis that the kits had wanted to go. Had begged him for nearly a moon to take them adventuring beyond the piers. But no, he admitted this now to Taffytuft, they had only wished to venture forth because of his tales. He had made them enamored with the sea and he had felt it his right, his duty, to introduce them to it. Even if it was against their parent's wishes. Even if it was too dangerous for kittens barely six moons old.

At first nothing had gone wrong. The weather was perfect- the sun's heat curbed by a brisk breeze and ocean spray- and the fishing crew were used to ship cats. Feline passengers were a guarantee when you docked in the Tradewinds. "The no-claws don't wrestle their fish the way do," Gustpond had explained to his audience as he perched on the top of an overturned bucket. "Since they lack claws they've trained their ships to release great webs- like spiders do- at just the right moment to catch their prey. Then they scoop up those webs and celebrate their catch. Sometimes they give the fish they don't like to us as reward for teaching them their clever hunting tricks." At that he lept off his perch and knocked over the bucket, revealing the pulpy chum and remains of fish discarded as unfit for markets. "Eat your fill," he encouraged the kits, "There's nothing like a fresh catch." Pride washed over him like waves wash over the sides of a boat as Gustpond watched his niblings try their first chum, but that pride soon turned to crashing panic when Curry began to gag. "Sirocco!" Masala screeched upon noticing his brother choking. "Do something!" And Gustpond did try, but between the blood and Curry's small size he wasn't sure what to do. Finally he managed to get his nephew to spit out a shard of metal- the broken end of a fishing hook- but Curry's breathing was so light and his sides so still. Blood still dribbled out of his mouth. "We'll be home soon," Gustpond had promised. "Just hang on." But he couldn't make the ship travel any faster, and he couldn't keep the sky clear.

"Watch him," he had instructed Masala just as the sky broken open. The other kits had scrambled for cover as soon as the first crack of thunder had sounded and he had to find them. Had to make sure they weren't trampled underfoot or washed overboard. He wove around no-claw boots and snaking lines of rope being dragged this way and that. Cries to hoist this sail or lower that competed with crashing waves to be heard. Gustpond managed to snatch Cinnamon by the scruff before he was washed overboard, but dropped him swiftly after to catch Cardamon. Then Coriander shrieked past his vision, caught in a tangle of shifting rope, and stunned by indecision Gustpond lost track of them all. Only Cumin, Masala, and Curry remained in his sight and he stood over them the whole trip back, shielding them from disaster with his body. In the end his family could only give last rites to Curry, the bodies of the three other dead could not be found. Gustpond was banished the day after.

"That's horrible!" Taffytuft's outburst made Gustpond flinch but she couldn't help it. The ocean of her twoleg's magic box was always so tranquil and crystal blue, nothing at all like how Gustpond recounted it. The two images couldn't be reconciled in her mind's eye. "I know it is," Gustpond replied morosely. "Which is why I had to tell you. I'm in love with you Taffytuft-" He laughed bitterly at that. "-which is such a foolish statement after a story like that. But I had to tell you, because I thought there might have been a chance you felt the same way, and I couldn't let you say it back not knowing what I had caused." Taffytuft was silent for several moments, her head abuzz with the implications of everything her friend had just revealed. Finally she spoke. "You're beautiful." Her words were met with a confused stare. "I know you couldn't have meant any harm because you're beautiful. Inside and out. Beauty, real beauty, is a reflection of the good inside. It's not the size of your muscles or the sleekness of your pelt or how your stripes are like stark rivers-" Though now that she had mentioned it she couldn't not think of Gustpond's stripes. "It's how your whiskers twitch when you laugh, how you pick flowers for a sick stranger, how you go mushroom hunting in the pouring rain. You can't mean to hurt others, not truly and not for long, the same way a nightshade can't mean to poison cats. And so I do love you, despite what you told me and anything else you will tell me. I do." The more she said so the more Taffytuft came to find it to be true. Love had bloomed in her chest as beautiful as any lily, it had simply taken her this long to realize it. Gustpond came out of his stupor with a nervous chuckle which then morphed into a real laugh, one that tickled his whiskers just the right way. "Then will you be my mate Taffytuft?" "Of course I will."

Salmoncress and Stormripple had left mid-conversation to give their bound some privacy but one pair of eyes had seen the whole confession, one pair of ears had heard the whole story. Crocusgaze hadn't meant to spy, well maybe she had just a little. All she had wanted to do was make sure Gustpond wasn't trying anything fishy like fixing votes or drowning kits. Not that he was the kind of tom to do that but a would-be-deputy couldn't be too careful, especially if that would-be-deputy was Crocusgaze. Whatever she had expected to see and hear it certainly wasn't that. Crocusgaze had the decency to feel ashamed. Turning to slip away before she inadvertently startled the happy couple the shecat suddenly found herself muzzle to muzzle with an all to familiar face. "Valhöll!" Crocusgaze cried, just barely managing to bring her surprised yelp down to writeoffable levels.

"Malloweyes, what on Miðgarðr are you doing here?" The former rouge's old accent had returned with a vengeance when the possible ghost, possible creepy old elder had surprised her. As Crocusgaze struggled to bring herself back under control, with furtive glances to make sure Taffytuft and Gustpond hadn't noticed her slip up, Malloweyes only chuckled. "I could ask you the same thing," she pointed out in a mew smooth as silk, "Enjoy spying on new lovers?" "I was only making sure Gustpond wasn't up to anything." Crocusgaze almost managed a tone as calm as Malloweyes. "Well I'd say you found it. The deputyship is virtually yours." Crocusgaze cocked her head, eyes narrowing. "Resinstar is a softy. Tell him how Gustpond killed his own nieces and nephews and you're a shoe in for sure," Malloweyes continued, as if she were explaining why rain fell to a kit. "I'm not doing that." "And why not? Do you want such a negligent cat in charge?" Crocusgaze glanced once more over her shoulder at where Taffytuft and Gustpond were engaged in, pointless given the weather, grooming. "You'd be a much better deputy and you know it." "If digging up one cat's past is all that puts me in the lead then I'm no candidate for deputy at all." Malloweyes shook her ragged head and let out another chuckle. "Suit yourself." She flashed a grin. "But when your way fails come look me up." Then she all at once she was gone, leaving Crocusgaze with nothing but the memory of her gleaming green eyes and a sinking feeling in her stomach.

As it turned out, neither Malloweyes needn't have bothered proposing a slander campaign, Gustpond took himself out of the running before the next sun high. "I need to focus on my family you see," he had explained to Resinstar, "Taffytuft and I are planning on having lots of kits. Besides-" and he had laughed a bit at this "-I never wanted to be deputy in the first place. Mottledfoot's just a bit too persuasive for her own good." And so the clan found themselves gathered under a drooping holly tree, which was far from ideal but the best they could do under such circumstances, staring up at Resinstar and Crocusgaze who were perched amongst the branches. "I say these words before StarClan," Resinstar began, startling a little as the holly branch groaned under his weight as he shifted. "so that the spirits of our, uh-" "Warrior ancestors," Claywhistle helpfully supplied. "So that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve of my choice. The new deputy of Clayclan is Crocusgaze." The smattering of gathered cats let out a hearty cheer, even Mottledfoot after encouragement from Gustpond. Resinstar felt the glow of pride warm his chest despite the downpour. Clayclan was finally taking shape. The greatest adventure of the former junkyard cat's life had only just begun.

𝕠𝕟𝕖 𝕞𝕠𝕠𝕟 𝕒𝕘𝕠,
"They're gorgeous," Acornstream mewed with a wistful sigh, leaning against her mate. The clan had gathered round Fawnrunner, who had Stonepatch nestled behind her, grooming her fur carefully. Their four new balls of fluff were curled against her side, peacefully asleep. Next to her, Maplefall sat with Badgerstar grooming her, tail curled protectively around her pregnant belly. Lionheart leaned down to touch a congratulatory nose to Fawnrunner's, which resulted in the she-cat purring contentedly.
"What did you decide to name them?" She asked, and Fawnrunner beamed at her proudly, before ducking her head to nudge her kits gently, one by one. "This is Elkkit," she mewed, with reference to the bigger tabby kit, with lighter fur, "and her sisters, Thunderkit and Mistkit," each kit was touched by their mother's nose. Thunderkit first, a larger and stockier she-cat who looked like her father in grey and white, while Mistkit was a little darker and a little fluffier. "And this is Deerkit," Fawnrunner announced, her nose touching the last kit- small, with rich brown tabby fur and soft white patches.
"They're perfect, Fawnrunner," Dawnblossom mewed, leaning her head down to touch her nose to her cousins' soft pelts, seemingly in awe of how small they were. Her aunt rumbled a tired purr, at the exact moment that Goldleaf shouldered her way through. "That's enough gawking, all of you. She's had a long day, so clear out, and give me some room to work." The clan said their goodbyes to Fawnrunner and the kits, vanishing from the nursery and into the cool Newleaf afternoon.

★★★

As the sun set over the clan, family groups began to split away to catch up, as they tended to in the night. Adderpaw stood nervously near the apprentice's den and watched them. Ashenstrike padded toward Lionheart, and said something that made her roll her eyes. Longriver trailed along next to him, and Harrierstreak wasn't far behind. Roseclaw and Pinefeather were catching the last of the sun's rays, with Flintburr next to them, and Halfpaw and Sedgepaw nestled near him and discussing something exciting in hushed whispers.
Badgerstar emerged from the nursery, and made his way to the leader's tree. He clawed himself along the branch, and straightened up, calling to the clan: "all cats gather beneath Highbranch!" Slowly, her clanmates turned toward the leader, and Maplefall even appeared in the mouth of the nursery, with Stonepatch's glittering eyes visible in the dim light over her shoulder. Adderpaw was sure that Fawnrunner and the new kits were asleep by now.
"Today, we welcome another warrior into the ranks of GroveClan," he announced, "I, Badgerstar of GroveClan, call upon our warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of the warrior code, and I recommend him to you wholeheartedly. Halfpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and to protect your clan, even at the cost of your life?" The young tom nodded, and yowled back; "I do!"
"Then you receive your warrior name. From now on, you will be known as Halfpond, for your calm, soothing presence. StarClan honours your thoughtfulness, compassion and intellect. It is my honour to welcome you as a full warrior of GroveClan." The clan sent up joyful yowls of Halfpond's new name, as Badgerstar climbed back down the tree to rest his muzzle atop the new warrior's head. Watching Flintburr and Sedgepaw cheer loudest of all, Adderpaw felt her gut twist. She wondered who would cheer for her when she got her warrior name.
The clan gathered around Halfpond to say congratulations, and Adderpaw slipped inside the apprentice den, climbing into her nest and curling up. It was hard, not having any family. Whatever Lionheart had said to her that first day- it was true. She wasn't tough enough to survive without them, even if she wanted to be. A scuffling made her turn, and she blinked owlishly at Woodpaw, who was stationed over her with wide eyes.
"There you are! Come on, you have to come with us to tell dad about our day. I mean, he's gonna be disappointed that I lost, but it'll be way more dramatic if you play up how you and mom had this epic battle! Plus you'll get to brag about beating Squirrelpaw." Adderpaw blinked at the other tabby, bewildered. "But... it's your family time," she protested, and Woodpaw shrugged. "So? You can be a part of our family too! Come on!" When Adderpaw didn't move, Woodpaw nudged her again. Finally, the smaller she-cat got to her feet, trotting after Woodpaw with a bewildered look on her face.
The two she-cats bounded across camp together, skidding to a stop in front of Hawkthorn, Acornstream and Squirrelpaw. The latter gave Adderpaw a quizzical look, and she smiled back at him bashfully. "Squirrelpaw was telling us you all played a game today?" Hawkthorn said, with an amused lilt to his voice. Adderpaw locked eyes with her mentor, who gave her an encouraging smile. The little she-cat huffed out some air, and then nodded. "It was a game called traitor, where we were all trying to hunt each other like prey. It was just me and Acornstream left in the end, but she got me eventually."
"Yes, but you were very elusive," she she-cat said with a tinkling laugh, "Adderpaw gave me the runaround so much, and she always caught me coming just before I was about to pounce." Hawkthorn nuzzled his mate with a rumbling purr. "She sounds very talented, she must have had a great mentor." Woodpaw and Squirrelpaw wrinkled their noses, and let out twin groans at their parent's display of affection. Hawkthorn laughed, swatting at them with his tail. "Alright then, if you don't want to see me cherish your mother, go play somewhere else!"
"Come on!" Woodpaw enthused, leaping to her paws. After a moment's hesitation, Squirrelpaw got to his feet and followed after her, walking shoulder to shoulder with Adderpaw as his sister lead them back toward the nursery. "She'll want to play mossball, you know," he said matter of factly, and Adderpaw rolled her eyes. "I know what Woodpaw likes to play. And it'll be fun- we won't have much time to play soon, since we'll all be warriors in a short amount of time." Squirrelpaw shrugged a little, and Adderpaw rolled her eyes again, nudging him with her shoulder.
"Don't act like you're too old to have fun, Squirrelpaw," she mewed, before she bounded ahead to catch up with her friend. Squirrelpaw slowed to a stop, glancing over his shoulder at Sedgepaw, Halfpond, Dawnblossom and Dusklight. Then, after a moment's more hesitation, he too bounded toward apprentice's den, and ducked inside.

"Is it weird seeing him become a warrior now even though he's almost as old as you?" Dustfang asked, nestled next to his son as they watched Burrcall laughing with Flowershine, Flintburr and Halfpond. Boulderflame shrugged a little. "Not really. Longriver was older than us as an apprentice, but we became warriors before he did. I guess it just seems a little weird because they're more mature than we are, but... I dunno. It's nice to have some younger cats around. It's kind of weird talking to the older cats like they're the only friends we have."
"Come on, they can't be all bad," Dustfang chuckled a little, before his face got serious as Boulderflame's own contorted into a cheeky smile. "Well, no, they're not all bad. In fact, there's one she-cat I think is pretty swell." He sat up a little, and Dustfang contracted in on himself as his son called out across the camp for Shadowtail. The tabby molly lifted her head, turning to blink at the pair of them, before she let out a laugh and trotted on over, head cocked to the side. "What is it this time?" She asked, before narrowing her eyes playfully at Boulderflame, "you're not going to make me settle another argument with Burrcall, are you?"
"Not this time," he said, "and for the record, she's totally wrong, a bear would absolutely win in a fight against a tiger and there's nothing either of you can say to change my mind." Dustfang gave Shadowtail a quizzical look, but she just shrugged good-naturedly and laughed a little. "Anyway, that's not why I called you over. Dad wanted to know if you wanted to go on a walk." Dustfang sputtered, and Shadowtail blinked, owlishly.
"Like... now? As in, right this minute?" She mewed, looking quite confused. "Yep!" Boulderflame replied, before his father could cut in. Shadowtail blinked at Dustfang, who smiled back, awkwardly, and then ducked his head shyly. "I'd like that," she said, and their eyes met again. Boulderflame got to his paws, and nodded goodbye to them, before bounding across the camp toward Flowershine and Burrcall, tail raised in a happy manner. He said something to Halfpond that made him duck his head in pleased embarrassment.
"So... a walk," Dustfang said. Shadowtail nodded, beaming at him as he got to his paws. He nodded for her to move first, and she did, with him falling into step beside her. The pair of them walked shoulder to shoulder out of camp in companionable silence, allowing the Newleaf breeze to ruffle their pelts. As they wandered through the forest surrounding the campsite, Dustfang couldn't help but sneak glances at Shadowtail, admiring the way the moonlight dappled her tawny fur.
"What?" She asked, with a laugh, and Dustfang shook his head with a wry laugh. "Boulderflame is very good at putting me into situations where I'm not comfortable," he said, and blinked as Shadowtail drew to a halt. "We can go back, if you want," she mewed, her gaze concerned and a little... hurt? Dustfang shook his head, quickly. "No, no. I want to be here, I do. I just... I don't know what to say. Or do. I mean. You look... you are... you're wonderful. Gorgeous. One of the smartest she-cats I've ever met and you mean a lot to me. I don't want to mess this up."
"Well," she said, "in my experience, rambling when you're nervous doesn't help." Dustfang blew out a sigh, and she laughed, nudging his shoulder with her own. "But that doesn't mean it wasn't cute. Come on, I'll race you to the Sunning Rocks." She grinned, and then shoulder-checked him hard enough to send him stumbling. By the time he collected his paws, she was already several tail-lengths ahead, whooping gleefully. Dustfang's shoulders wiggled as he crouched, before surging forward, chasing after her into the night.

"Are you excited for your vigil?" Dusklight asked, settled beside Halfpond's flank in the centre of camp as the rest of the cats started to melt away. Halfpond shrugged a little, giving his friend a gentle smile. "I suppose so. Isn't it scary, though, spending the night out here on your own? I mean, what if something happens!" Dusklight let out a little laugh, shrugging his shoulders easily. "Well... to be fair, I wasn't alone. It was a challenge though, because Dawnblossom kept making faces at me."
Halfpond let out a little laugh, and Dusklight gave him a small smile. "But... really. If something happens, just yowl as loud as you can, and I'll come running." Halfpond rolled his eyes, shaking his head. "Oh, I'm sure. You and your sister can't keep your noses out of trouble." Dusklight laughed, nodding sagely to himself as he thought about that. Halfpond did have a point- he and Dawnblossom were renowned mischief makers, and proud of it.
"Hey, Halfpond?"
"Yes?" He turned his head toward Dusklight, and the tabby tom could feel his heart beating in his chest as his friend stared at him with his wide, curious eyes. "I just wanted you to know," he said, coughing a little to cover his nerves, "I... really like you. As more than a friend. I uh- I've been thinking about it, and... I know I'm attracted to toms. Only toms. And I like you. So... yeah. I just wanted you to know."
Halfpond looked bewildered for a second, before a painfully awkward smile crossed his face. Dusklight thought it looked more like a grimace. "That's... very sweet, and I'm glad you trusted me enough to tell me," Halfpond mewed, "but I don't feel the same way. I like you as a friend, and I... have feelings for someone else." The last part was somewhat muttered, and he ducked his head, as if to avoid Dusklight's gaze.
"Oh," the other said, disappointment palpable in his voice, before he took a deep breath, "that's okay! Romance doesn't always work out, and I'm sure we'll both find someone, in time. I, for one, am still very young." Halfpond gave Dusklight a baffled look, surprised to see that the cheery tone the young tom had re-adopted went as far as to actually reach his eyes. "So. Who is it that you like?" He shuffled closer slyly, and Halfpond gave him another almost-grimace.
"Oh," said Dusklight, and a grin stretched across his maw, "it's Dawnblossom, isn't it?"
"Don't say anything!" Halfpond whined, dropping to the ground and covering his face with his paws. Dusklight laughed. "I won't! I won't, I promise your secret is safe with me. But... if you want, I can help you. She is my sister, and I do kind of know her better than anyone in the clan." Halfpond gave him a quizzical look. "You'd do that? Even after I rejected you?" Dusklight let out a laugh, rocking back on his haunches. "Please, I'm not petty enough to hold a grudge. Besides, I love love too much! If I have the opportunity to make a match that'll make cats happy, I'll take it. Besides, you're my friend, and I love my sister, and I want to see you both happy."
"You're a good cat," Halfpond mewed, touching his nose to Dusklight's cheek. The tabby purred, before his ears pricked up at Lionheart calling his name. "Time to go," she mewed, nodding to the edge of the basin, "the sun's down, it's time for Halfpond's vigil." Dusklight gave his friend one last look, before he turned and bounded away toward the warrior's den. Lionheart padded toward the new warrior, a gentle smile on her maw.
"Excited?" She asked, and Halfpond nodded, which made a deep rumbling chuckle come from somewhere that was decidedly not Lionheart. Ashenstrike appeared at her side, standing close enough that Halfpond could see where their pelts mingled. "Ashenstrike and I are going for a walk," she mewed, "it's kind of like a tradition at this point. We're just letting you know so you don't panic if you hear us coming back. Oh, and Shadowtail and Dustfang are still out there, too."
"I hope they're having fun," Ashenstrike mused, with that sly tone to his voice that meant he was implying more than he was letting on. Lionheart rolled her eyes and swatted him with her tail, before she gave Halfpond an encouraging smile. He nodded firmly to her in return, and the older pair turned and set off through the tunnel and out into the territory. The Newleaf walks were much more pleasant, with a cool breeze keeping them at just the right temperature as they strolled through the forest.
"So, if you were going to have kits, what would you name them?" Lionheart asked, leaping atop a fallen log, and tracing the grain with her paws, following it all the way up to the gnarled roots, where she settled down, body molded like liquid into the crevices that cradled her. Ashenstrike gave her an amused look. "So, I'm not allowed to ask invasive kit questions, but you are?" He teased, placing his paws up against the side of the log.
"Yes," she said, "if you're courting me, I have to know whether you'll name my kits something dumb if I... pass out, or temporarily forget how to speak, or am cursed to not be able to come up with my own kit names." Ashenstrike laughed a little, finally clawing his way up the log to rest underneath her, wrinkling his nose as she flicked her tail over his maw. "Okay, okay," he said, shaking his head, "I guess it depends on what they look like. If we had kits, and they looked like you... maybe... Firekit?"
"Boring."
"Foxkit."
"Overdone."
"Redkit."
"Oh come on-"
"Cherrykit." Lionheart blinked at him, before she laughed a little. "Oh, a sentimentalist, then?" She said, and Ashenstrike nodded, standing up to touch his nose to hers. "Uh-huh, most definitely. I never claimed to be any good at naming anything, but... well. I hope you can forgive me for that, at least." Lionheart nuzzled her head under his jaw, slipping from her resting place to land on the log next to him. "Don't worry," she mewed, "I liked those names just fine."

𝕥𝕠𝕕𝕒𝕪,
"Are you ready for this?" Sedgepaw turned to look back at Ashenstrike, with Lionheart and Badgerstar behind him, and Flintburr flanking her mentor on the other side. She gave the procession a smile, and rolled her eyes. "Of course I am. Or do you want to tell Badgerstar you didn't teach me right?" Ashenstrike shook his head, stepping forward to touch noses with his apprentice. "Okay, smart-mouth," he said, "go. You're going to do great."
"I know," she mewed, casting the cats one last look, "I'm going to make my father proud." Flintburr's chest puffed a little, as his daughter nodded to them. Then, she turned and bounded away, paws flying freely over the ground until she was out of sight. They watched her go for a while longer, before Lionheart turned away from the tunnel and mewed; "I'm going to call up patrols." She disappeared into the warrior's den, and Badgerstar scuttled off to the nursery without much by way of an excuse.
"You must be proud," Ashenstrike mewed, turning to smile at Flintburr. The black tom nodded, staring past his clanmate where the leaves of the willow tree were still swinging from her exit. "I am. And mostly... shocked that I got to witness this. I didn't think I'd get to see my babies grow up. And yet, here I am." Ashenstrike gave him a smile, and a nod. "I'm happy for you, Flintburr, I really am. You've done great with those kits, with what little time you've had."
"And I should thank you, too," Flintburr said, "you've been great with Sedgepaw, like a second father to her. I appreciate that, seeing as she does only have one parent." Ashenstrike narrowed his eyes, teasingly, with a rumbling purr of happiness. "If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were asking me to be your shiny new co-parent." Flintburr laughed, shaking his great head. "Don't flatter yourself," he mewed, "my heart belongs to someone else."
"As does mine," Ashenstrike said, and both toms turned to watch a fluffy ginger pelt emerge from the warrior's den, and then duck into the medicine den moments later. Flintburr gave Ashenstrike a private, knowing smile, before the two of them turned away from each other, and headed toward the dens to great their clanmates for the day ahead.

"Is it odd, changing clans?" Squirrelpaw asked, taking extra-long steps to keep up with Roseclaw. Even though the apprentice was nearly grown, the massive tom was still hard to keep up with. He wondered if cats like Flowershine were so small because Roseclaw had just taken all of their leg-length and muscle and hoarded it to himself. The ginger and white tom seemed to think this over, before he shrugged a little, turning to glance back at Dustfang and Shadowtail. They still seemed to be quite deep in conversation, so he decided to humour the young apprentice.
"No, not particularly," he said, "at first, it was hard, because I lost a lot of my friends, and my family too. But... settling here was easy. I had my sister, and the tom I love. It already felt like a home from the outset. It isn't so hard to call it home now." Squirrelpaw nodded, thinking about this in silence. Roseclaw's ear swiveled back to try and pick up what Shadowtail and Dustfang were talking about, but the apprentice piped up with another question. "What is it like to be in love?"
"Why don't you ask Dustfang?" Roseclaw teased, turning to shoot an amused look at the silver tom, who blinked at him, and then look scandalized as Shadowtail giggled. "Aren't you the one with the moons-old mate?" His old friend retorted, and Roseclaw let out a rumbling purr. "Aren't you the one with two kits?" Shadowtail laughed, outright, nudging the silver tabby with her shoulder. "He does have you there, you know."
"I know," Dustfang grumbled, before he shot a shy glance at the she-cat, and cleared his throat, "for me... it feels like coming home. Every time you see them, you get a warm feeling in your chest. It feels good, and familiar, and... right. Something just clicks, right, and whenever you're together it's like you've found a missing piece of the puzzle, like they fit right into whatever you've been missing like they belonged there all along." He coughed, shooting Shadowtail another shy smile. The she-cat smiled back, before ducking her head and turning her gaze to the ground, a pleased smile on her face.
"What do you think, Roseclaw?" Squirrelpaw asked, curious eyes lighting on the bigger tom. "Well, Dustfang nearly nailed it. For me, it's someone you never get tired of. Someone who makes you happy, who always makes you laugh at things you wouldn't normally laugh at, who always seems to understand how you're feeling. Dustfang is right when he says something just... clicks. It's always there, that moment of mutual understanding."
"Interesting," Squirrelpaw said, "you've given me a lot to think about."
"So who's the lucky cat?" Shadowtail mewed, inquisitively. Squirrelpaw squinted at her, and then shook his head. "Please, I'm not mousebrained enough to think telling my aunt about my love life is a good idea." Shadowtail looked bewildered for a second, before she burst into laughter with the other toms. Squirrelpaw ducked his head, but no one missed the quietly pleased smile on his face as he scampered forward to scout ahead.

"How's operation Lovebirds going?" Pinefeather asked, delicately stepping over some debris near the shore. Boulderflame grinned, chest puffing up happily. "It's great, actually, I managed to get them to go walking together at night like Lionheart and Ashenstrike do, so I figure that's a good step." Longriver chuckled a little bit, and the patrol turned to look at him, where he was wandering along next to Harrierstreak, their tails twined companionably. "That doesn't mean anything," he mewed, "it's a good start, but Ashenstrike and Lionheart have been going on those walks for moons now."
"Yeah, but they're both stubborn and bad at this kind of thing," Harrierstreak protested. "Plus, Lionheart is super tough," Flowershine piped up, "I, for one, think you're doing great work Boulderflame. Shadowtail's not as afraid of her feelings as Lionheart is. And I think they'd be sweet together, they both deserve a happy ending." Boulderflame felt flushed, and he ducked his head bashfully at the praise. Pinefeather chuckled in his rich way. "Oh, most definitely. I remember Dustfang and Tanglestep at gatherings, when they were little apprentices back in the day. Dustfang's a little awkward, but he's got the right spirit."
"Wait, you knew Dustfang when he was an apprentice?" Halfpond mewed, and Boulderflame stared at him with wide eyes. "Wow. I never thought about it, but you must have known my mom. That's so weird." He laughed a little, breathlessly, like the wind had been knocked out of him. Flowershine sidled up next to him, gently pressing against his side. He gave her an appreciative smile, as Pinefeather looked at him with soft eyes.
"Oh darling, you bet I did. Roseclaw always liked Tanglestep and Dustfang, he thought they had spirit. I can't say I knew her extremely well, but I considered us friends, even if she was much closer to Lionheart's age than mine. She was a good cat- strong, moral. She would have been very proud of you." Boulderflame ducked his head again, and Flowershine gave his cheek an encouraging lick. The black tom gave her a shy smile in return, while Harrierstreak and Longriver gave each other knowing looks.
"I can only hope I get to meet my mother, one day," Halfpaw mewed, "Dad says she's still out there somewhere, but... I don't know if that's just what he wants to believe, or if it's really true."
"I think it's true," Longriver piped up, "for what it's worth, I think if Flintburr thought that your mother being dead was a possibility, he wouldn't hold so much hope in his heart. Besides... it might be weird, or superstitious to say this, but if Harrierstreak died... I would feel it instantly. It feels like we're connected, you know? Even if he were miles away, I would still know." He wrinkled his nose as his mate purred and nuzzled his cheek.
"Maybe you could talk to Badgerstar about setting off to find her?" Harrierstreak suggested. "Badgerstar has a lot of friends, and a lot of ally clans who would be willing to help him out, I'm sure. If not allies, at least leaders he's friendly with who would point him in the right direction. If she's still out there, I'm sure we could find her."
"What would I do even if I found her?" Halfpond asked, shrugging a little. Flowershine scuttled across to rub up against his side, comfortingly. "Well... you'd know, wouldn't you? That's better than nothing, and maybe the clan would be willing to let her visit, or to let you visit even."
"What if I want to stay?"
"Then I'm sure Badgerstar would let you," Pinefeather said, "he doesn't seem to be in the habit of breaking up family."
"What if she has a new family?" The group was silent for a bit, before Boulderflame cleared his throat. "Sometimes a new family isn't a bad thing," he said, "I love my mother, and I miss her every day, but... I want my dad to be happy. And I'm excited to have a new mother, and new brothers and sisters. Just because you're apart from your family for a while doesn't mean you love them any less. Flintburr had all of us as a new family, and he was still just as excited to have you back."
"You're right," Halfpond gave him a small smile, "thank you."
"You're welcome, just call me Boulderflame the wise."
"I will not," Halfpond replied, making the group laugh a little, "but I will make a bet that I can catch more prey than you on this patrol." Boulderflame narrowed his eyes, a purr rumbling deep in his chest. "Oh, you're on."

WEATHER REPORT - NEWLEAF
The early stage of Newleaf brings a bounty of herbs and new potential Clanmates in every Clan's territory,
prey is beginning to bounce back after Leaf-bare, and over the next few weeks no Clan cat will ever sleep
with an empty belly.

└────────────────────────────┘

────────────────────────────

» Mousestar has taught Beetlepaw a new skill! ( hunting )
» Smokewhisker has taught Weaselpaw a new skill! ( hunting )
» Mousestar and her hunting patrol catch +3 voles for the Clan.
» Magpiecloud was unable to teach Foxpaw a new skill...
» Newtclaw encounters a potential apprentice for MeadowClan.
» Nettleleaf collects +1 stinging nettle and +1 poppy seeds.

( you could keep the cat as a warrior if you'd wish, however deputies have the exact same mechanics as
warriors do, if that influences your decision in any way.
)

» The spirits of StarClan pay heed to Morningstar's request and send a warrior to join TwistedClan.
» Silversteam has given birth to a litter of two! Unfortunately, the first kit is stillborn... (1; molly) (2; tom)
» Spottednose collects +1 burnet and +1 thyme.
» Stormstrike has taught Rainpaw a new skill! ( swimming )
» Birchwhisker's hunting patrol comes home with +2 thrushes and +1 mouse.
» Morningstar's hunting patrol comes home with +1 mouse and +2 voles.

Larch's Advance
All saplings should be able to thrive, nurture that life and let it grow!
Number of Cats: 2

The russet tom skidded through the trees, his paws barely touching the ground as he fufilled his purpose that day. He had learned many moons ago to not give a murderer a second chance, so in this case he went as fast as his paws could carry him. But what were you to do if the thing following you was only the killer of prey, and you had to run for a purpose? The one behind him did not even had bad intentions, it was only his task that alerted feeling of fear inside. He had never caught prey in his life, so to be prey once before and now again was not a thrilling thought. The young tom suddenly started to recognise the surroundings and stopped to let his persuer catch up. How could he be caught when he was dead, and besides, he was where he needed to be?

A brown tabby dashing through the woods followed the fresh scent in front of him. To be woken up by a cheeky red-furred tom was not the greatest start to a morning, and in his sleepy haze he had given chase. The brown tabby was catching up now, seeing the red pelt come closer. He was nearly there until the russet-furred tom simply stood still and vanished.

Birdsong had lived in the snowy forest his entire life, sticking close to the side of his littermate, a she-cat named Sunflower. Recently they had parted ways because of an argument and Birdsong regretted it. As soon as the duo could walk they were venturing the forest together, brought together because of the loss of their other sibling Butterfly when she was just one moon old.

They had always roamed a small place in the forest where the tallest trees were at the very edge of the town, and were named by a twoleg who lived at the tree border. Sunflower always wanted to go beyond their space where the family had lived, and would go further into the forest. But the forest was no longer as safe - rouges from distant places came and claimed new spots. Just recently the house where they were named had been taken over by a strong white tom who despised kittypets and was eager to kick out the previous cat after the twoleg had left, and now he was spreading out his new into the garden.

The kittypet who had lived there was supposedly dwelling nearby the house, and had made a nest in a particularly shadowed part of the forest (probably do that no one could find him). With a jolt, Birdsong looked up and noticed the trees had their branches further spread, blocking out the sunlight. He could still see the roof of the house where the kittypet had lived but this part of the forest was closer to the river. Birdsong was ready to leave after a spot of hunting but his curiosity drove him onwards.

After a few steps he noticed a small scrap of fur huddling under a tree, two mournful eyes poking out through the fur. "Are you alright?" asked Birdsong in alarm, his eyes shining with sympathy. The cat's fur stood up along their spine as he approached, and they raised their head, tail twitching in anxiety."Um, not really," he replied sadly, shifting into a sitting position and leaning heavily on the tree behind him. The tone of his voice was shaky and quiet, and had a soft edge that clearly identified them as a kittypet. "Who are you? Have you come from my cottage?" he asked tensely."I'm Birdsong, I'm not here to hurt you," Birdsong meowed tenderly and cautiously. This cat looked defeated: his black fur was messy, his yellow eyes were wide with shock and terror, and he looked thin and hungry. He was clearly the kittypet that had been driven out. "The cat from the cottage won't come to hurt you either, he'll be gone in a few seasons. Who are you?" he continued, trying to reassure the cat in front of him.

"I'm Simon. Do you live in the forest then?" Simon asked, his eyes lighting up with wary interest. "Yes I do. I think your new to the forest, sorry if I'm assuming anything, but I can help you to know your way around?" Birdsong questioned. He and Sunflower had always tried to help lost cats, even if she didn't he was the one to guide them on their way. But this kittypet was interesting. He had been driven from his home and now seemed to be finding a friend in the brown tabby, who was ready to help him in return. "Well... I am - was a house cat I think if that's what you call us. I don't really know my way around, so could you show me? If that's okay, I just, am not very sure," Simon said sheepishly. Birdsong nodded.

"I can also show you how to hunt and patrol this area if you want to stay. Some cats have even created groups that work together to look after land. If you wanted to help other lost cats, well that's what I used to do with my sister, and I can help you know your way around first." Birdsong explained, watching the flickering amusement on the younger tom's face. "I'll probably stay, my housefolk are gone. I suppose we can help other cats, I'm not very good at hunting yet but we can start a, um, fresh kill pile?" Simon answered, no longer relying so heavily on the tree and a faint smile on his face. Just because he had lost his home didn't mean that he couldn't help out other cats that had lost their's. Living alone in the forest no longer seemed such a happy choice, and making a friend had brightened his thoughts about what to do next.
