The candlelight flickered from the wick as the winged viscet walked down the silent halls of the castle. Rain pattered lightly on the thick transparent windows. Pawsteps and giggles of two young visclings could be heard, making the once silent hall noisy. The winged viscet lightly fumbled with the candle holder in his paws as he entered the small room. Two small female viscets could be seen on the ground of the dim room, coloring with some charcoal pencils. The pencils were wooden, with names engraved on the sides of each of them. They read Melody and Lapis. One girl had wings, the other did not. The two small visclings peeked up, looking at their father, who had just entered the room. He set down the candle, smiling. "Would you like to hear a story, girls?" He spoke, sitting on the ground with the small visclings. They suddenly dropped their charcoal pencils and a little wooden "clink" could be heard as they hit the spruce wood floor. They beamed, nodding frantically. Their father laughed, standing back up to grab one of the many books aligning the small room. He scanned the many shelves, looking for the "S" section. Running his finger along the thousands of dark colored books, he finally stopped on a dark purple book. The pulled out the old novel, blowing the cover to get the dry dust and sticky cobwebs off. The purple book looked very old, ancient almost. The cover had a faint carving of a snake on it, with amethyst eyes and a long, forked tongue. The dark maned father finished brushing off the book, bringing it back over to the little visclings waiting patiently on the floor. He sat down, folding his elegant pixie wings. He gently set the book on the wooden floor, opening it to the first page.
"This story, is an ancient legend, about a serpent king, whose voice is forever trapped in a snake, and his only hope of speaking is through the doll that he carries," The father started, "If either of you are to scared, I won't read this."
The young visclings shook their heads, "We aren't scared papa! We're brave! Just like you!" Little Lapis squeaked.
The father laughed, "Then let's begin."
~~
The dirt brown viscet king stirred in his throne, moving around every two minutes trying to stay comfortable. He sighed, bring a king of an entire snake kingdom was not easy. He had to make sure the eggs were being incubated properly, he had to make sure the poisonous snakes stayed far from the harmless ones, he also had to make sure he didn't bite anything or get angry. His venom was like a curse to him, but not like the curse yet to come.
He continued to fidget in his seat, gaining the attention of one of the guards. The purple and white viscet tail tapped the body of the guard, making the guard turn around and take notice of the bored ruler.
"Sir? Are you alright? Would you care for a walk?" The fennec eared viscet spoke.
"Yes, actually, a walk would be nice, thank you for asking, Quinn." The serpent viscet stood up, being helped by his four guards, Quinn and Quilo, along with Tsuki and Ginga. Even though he didn't need help, he accepted the kindness anyways.
He started over to the door, until he felt his paws rumble beneath him. Paws rumbling turned into ground, and ground turned into building, and before the five in the room knew it, a humongous green serpent burst into the room, hissing and spitting with anger.
"YOU!" He roared, pointing to Fafnir, "THIS IS THEIR KING?!"
Fafnir took a step back, trying his hardest not to get spit with anger. He looked and saw his guards trembling as well, looking towards him to make sure Fafnir didn't do anything stupid.
Fafnir bit his lip, waiting for the giant green snakes next insult.
"I can't believe this is their king!" The snake laughed, throwing his head back, "how PATHETIC!"
Rage swirled inside Fafnir, making him step forward this time, "I'm sorry, am I not good enough?" Fafnir asked sourly.
"Good enough? GOOD ENOUGH?!" The snake roared again, "I've never seen such a disgrace of a king! You're not even a snake!"
Those last words, that last phrase, that was what set the ticking time bomb off. Fafnir's tail started to rattle. He swung his tail as the rattling got faster, and faster, and faster. Quinn and Tsuki rushed behind the throne, knowing what was going to happen next.
Fafnir stomped forward, standing directly in front of the large green snake. All the rage bundled up inside him, everything that he kept in his mind for over one thousand years, came tumbling out at that moment.
"I'll have you know, I've ruled this kingdom for over A THOUSAND YEARS, and NOBODY has had a problem with me ruling, so why NOW!?" He spat.
Right after that last word, purple venom shot out of the serpent viscets mouth and directly onto the large snakes face. Fafnir's face then went from enraged, to scared. The snake screeched, whipping its head back and fourth to try and get rid of whatever was on his face. Steam started to form on the green reptiles head, making him scream even louder.
Fafnir closed his eyes.
The screaming stopped.
Fafnir's purple orbs slowly opened, and sitting right in front of him, was a now small, green serpent. He opened his mouth to speak, but could not.
His venom curse, just got a whole lot worse.
The wind howled, clouds rolling across the blackened sky. A small campfire crackled in front of the former snake ruler. Twenty years had passed, meaning twenty years ago, on this exact day, the Serpent King Fafnir, had been cursed. Cursed by his newfound best friend. Fafnir had learned that the snake had come from a rivaling serpent kingdom. It all made sense to him now. Of course after a thousand years of ruling, someone would want to take him down.
The green snake slithered around Fafnir's neck, and then on his back. The snake moved close up to his ear, hissing some words, "Don't get to clossssse...!"
Fafnir shot up, tail rattling madly. He growled at the snake, moving his doll to say something. "I TOLD YOU TO BE QUIET!" Fafnir signed with his doll.
The green reptile only laughed, "You should be grateful I'm actually letting you speak in someway."
Fafnir grumbled and sat back down, still burning with rage. Why was he so angry? The snake hadn't even said anything infuriating. Fafnir turned to the scaly creature, who was now curled up on the forest floor, and signed, "You're the one making me feel this way, aren't you."
The snake only hummed in response, making Fafnir's tail twitch. He fumbled with his long raptor like claws, trying to calm himself down, but he was failing miserably. He only made himself more angry.
"Why don't you sleep, that should calm you down?" The reptile said, slithering back onto the serpent viscet.
Even though the snake could really push on Fafnir's buttons, he knew that the snake truly cared for him, they had grown close over the past twenty years. And even though the snake wasn't being quite like a true friend, Fafnir still loved him like one.
Fafnir nodded lazily and curled up besides the dark oak tree he was near, inching closer to the fire to let the warmth put him to a slumber.
"Don't get to close to the fire, Fafnir"
~~
The fire smoked in the morning light, waking up Fafnir with a yawn. He opened his eyes and looked around drowsily for his slithering green friend, until he heard faint angry mumbling and saw a tiny green tail sticking out from under him. Oops. He must've rolled out onto the snake while he was sleeping. He stood up, giving the snake some air.
"You're lucky i can't kill you, Fafnir." He hissed, shaking his head to get the grass and dirt chunks out from in between his scales.
Fafnir only rolled his eyes. He looked around for a few second before landing his eyes on his puppet. He grabbed the little plush doll and held onto it. He then walked back over to his reptile friend and grabbed him. He threw the green creature onto his back
so they could continue on their journey to who knows where. Fafnir certainly didn't. The snake never told him. They were practically wandering through the forest aimlessly.
Fafnir padded the fire lightly with his now rattling tail (thanks snake) to help put it out all the way. Then the two started on their aimless journey. But before they could even start walking, Fafnir heard a faint scream, a crash, and leaves rustling. He craned his neck so he could look at the snake who was on his back, and had clearly heard the noise as well.
"No. No way. We are NOT investigating that." The snake protested. But of course, Fafnir disobeyed.
The serpent viscet raced towards the sound, with the green snake on his back holding on to him for dear life. Fafnir curved around trees and bushes, he hopped over a few logs and puddles as well.
He then reached a clearing, where he saw a huffing pixie like viscet holding a broken stick in its paws, staring at damaged tree.
The viscet immediately turned to Fafnir
"Sorry! There was a spider and I- wait what?"
The winged viscet stepped back, dropping her stick in the process.
"W-who are you?" She spoke softly.
Fafnir opened his mouth to respond, but then realized he couldn't talk. Instead, the snake spoke for him.
"Oh you know, he's just the most powerful serpent king in all of the isles," The snake scoffed, "Oh wait! He WAS the most powerful king, now he isn't really anything anymore! Ha ha!" He laughed.
Fafnir pouted, ripping the snake from his neck and throwing him on the ground with a thud. The snake groaned and just rolled his eyes.
"You're THE serpent king? The one who was just told as a myth?" The pixie spoke, wide eyed.
Fafnir tilted his head in confusion, shrugging slightly. The pixie bounded over to him sitting in front, making Fafnir jump back a bit. The pixie's eyes sparkled, making Fafnir scared.
"My father," She started softly, "He-he told me and my sister a story when we were young, one about a serpent king who was cursed. He had his voice taken away. Is-is that you?" She quietly asked him.
Sweat dripped from Fafnir's forehead, this was him. Did he really have a fairy tale written about him? He slowly nodded, not sure what to do.
"R-really? I thought that story was all fake..I thought..I never..." She sighed.
Fafnir's eyes softened at her. He became less scared and stepped forward, only to be faced with the viscet's energetic side.
"My name is Lapis!" She said, "Fafnir, right?"
He jumped back again, and nodded frantically. The snake hissed and slithered up to Fafnir again, wrapping around him once more.
Lapis opened her mouth to speak, but was rudely interrupted by the snake.
"Before you ask, yes, im the reason he can't talk, and yes, I cursed him." The snake spoke.
Lapis stared at him, furrowing her eyebrows.
"Anyways!" Lapis said loudly to try and drown out the rude snake, "Can you talk? How do you talk? Why are you always looking so angry? Why-"
Before she could speak, the snake shouted at her, "Would you calm down?! Jeez.." He hissed
