Weather:
The thick snow and dark skies have disappeared without a trace, leaving the deathly silence and white landscapes behind. The barren trees move only to drop the weighted loads of snow onto unwary dogs as prey ventures out into the blinding sunlight. Though prey and herbs will still be harder to find there will be a greater chance. You should also keep in mind that pregnant dogs and pups have a much harder time in winter and are more prone to death.

Delicate white paws trod the sodden ground, an irritable squelching sound rising as each paw landed. Amaryllis held her white snout high, copper colored nose searching the air for any promising smells. The Ibizan Hound paused suddenly and her lip twitched skyward. There it was.

Her pace picked up then as she began to follow the smell. Finally her destination came to her - a hole in a hillside, braced by old and worn wood. The way inside was dark and foreboding and as Amaryllis stepped closer a chilled breeze wafted from the dark. Amaryllis felt chills climb her legs - not from fear but rather excitement. The female let her heart pound in her ears for a moment before she pushed her way into the dark. It took only a few short moments for her eyes to adjust to the gloom and when they did she felt as though she'd burst with joy. The treasures and things she could find here! Untainted by other foolish canines or humans!

Amaryllis lifted her head from the old rail tracks she'd been observing and smiled broadly as she spotted the rail-car. She filled her lungs with the stagnant air and whispered, "Home." as she let the air escape.

She would lead a group of dogs here... not just any dogs, though, skilled dogs. They'd be famed around the world for the things they'd find in these old walls! Amaryllis trotted excitedly through the old mine, eventually reaching a room that had long flooded. A ladder had once helped someone climb down but now it sat rusty in the deep, crystalline waters. The hound knew instantly how she'd use this prized water and it wasn't for drinking. She needed to find her first follower! Perhaps she'd find some kind of god or goddess to answer her prayers in these tunnels..? For now she would have to rely on herself though.

Amaryllis began to leave the old mine when a sudden sparkle caught her eye. Dropping all ideas of patrolling she was on top of the sparkly in a heartbeat. Sacrificing the pearly shine of her paws she began to dig, ignoring the tiny rocks that dug into her soft pads. The sparkle grew into a magnificent pink and yellow gem cluster. The joy the hound had easily tripled at the sight and the pain in her paws ebbed as she gazed at the beautiful prize she'd found. Her thoughts drifted to the leather collar around her neck and she knew this gem would compliment her already wonderful appearance perfectly.

Nike curled closer to Mako. The air had adopted a cold nip to it, surprising the dogs who lived in the usually warm climate. Most of the kennel members had paired up and snuggled to keep warm overnight. Some dogs with their mates, some with their friends. Chase was huddled close to Tundra near Clint and River, who also shared a sleeping spot. The room seemed smaller. Maybe because there was more space in between sleeping pairs, or because some of the bigger males were sleeping with their mates in the nursery. Either way, Nike realized how she didn't have many dogs. Unlike Erebus who ruled over sixty, Nike had a much smaller kennel, with the Underdogs' numbers barely reaching twenty. She both envied her friend and was glad she wasn't in his position. The Imperium was no doubt a strong group, one of the strongest in Nike's opinion, but she couldn't handle feeding that many mouths. Mako shifting made her break away from her trance-like train of thought. Her admiral had offered sharing a spot a few days ago, and she had accepted. One of her eyes slowly slid open, scanning the peaceful bodies of her dogs. But someone was siting up rigidly. Nike opened her other eye and lifted her head. It was Hayes. She stifled a sigh. The brute had been acting odd this past moon. He would often mutter to himself during the night, but his accent was so thick that no one understood what he was babbling about. Another weird thing was that he seemed to be avoiding Nike. She wasn't going to lie, she missed his company. When he had first joined the group, Hayes had always stuck close to his general, never straying farther than a tunnel-length away except for when he went on patrols. But now, the hunter was sitting in the far corner, facing the light glow of the sunlight bursting through the top of the chamber. He seemed to be humming something, or going over some rhythmic speech. Nike pulled herself up, careful not to disturb Mako, and slowly walked over to him. She settled beside the tan dog, looking at his face. His eyes were somewhat clouded over, and glued unblinking to the hole in the ceiling. She followed his gaze and swallowed a sigh. "What are you looking at?" She murmured. The fae expected to catch him off-guard, but he didn't jump, just responded without moving. "Nothin' just admiring the warmth." He whispered back. Nike scooted closer to him. There was no warmth seeping into the chilly room. She licked her lips. "Was your home warm?" She asked. Maybe if she could get him talking, he'd break his vow to keep away from her. Hayes nodded. "Sometimes during the summer, you felt as if the sun was breaking you a apart, cooking each part of you separately. But you got used to it. In fact, I'd rather be burned alive than frozen." He rambled, not pausing or blinking. Nike looked up at the sun. "Did you have to hunt at night? Or was there a lot of shade." He shook his head slowly. "No shade. It was flat, dry, and boiling all day long. At night it cooled down a bit, but it was never truly cold. The only time it ever got chilly at home was during leaf-bare, and even then there wasn't enough bite in the air for your nose to go frozen." He sniffed, emphasizing his point "But all of the creatures were out at night, so it wasn't too hard to find food." Nike looked at him. "Did you live in a pack?" He shook his head. "So then you've always hunted and lived alone?" He nodded and said, "My mum died when I was little. Snake bite. But my father taught me the basics of hunting before a farmer shot him dead." Nike swallowed. Her head involuntarily glided over so that it rested on his shoulder. His muscles tensed at her touch but he soon melted into her. "What's the biggest thing you've caught?" She whispered, closing her eyes. A smile tugged at Hayes' lips. "Kangaroo." He chuckled "I was young and there was an injured roo limpin' around. To be honest it wasn't too hard. The thing wasn't going to survive anyways. Though it did pack a pretty good punch. I still have trouble in my jaw from time to time." He snickered and looked down at her. Her eyes were still close and her breathing was transforming into the softness of sleep. "You're a great hunter, Hayes." She murmured quietly. He flashed her a smile and shrugged, bouncing her head. "No I'm serious." She pressed, slightly opening her eyes "How would you like to be the hunting Sargent?" Hayes' jaw parted and his eyes widened. "Are you sure?" He gasped "I'm sure there are other dogs more qualified than me." Nike lashed his gently with her tail. "Nonsense." She yawned, closing her eyes again "You're the best hunter here." Hayes smiled thankfully. "Thank you, Nike. I won't let you down." He promised, licking her forehead. But Nike was too tired to notice. "I know you wont." She whispered, drifting away into the darkness of sleep.

iiindentA chill blew through the air, bringing with it a scent, a familiar scent. The pointed ears of a dog perked and swiveled to-and-fro, listening, sorting through each and every tiny sound to prove its validation. His head tipped back and nose directed into the air, poking his nostrils through a current of scents just above the very tips of his ears. His yellow-orbs brightened with courage, a courage so bright it sparked a fire within and danced gaily in the ebony-darkness. He was almost there.

iiindentKeep on. A voice echoed in the deep chambers of his mind, coaxing him on throughout this journey with an unknown end. You’ll know when you’re there. This voice came to Kronos naturally, or so he thought. He had never heard the voice before himself, but in his current state he believed it merely to be the inner-voice he had long forgotten of, a voice lost in the entanglement of thoughts within. Everyone was known to have this inner-voice themselves, correct? A voice that one hears but does not hear; a voice that carries within them the true emotion of their current state, a voice that speaks out the precise words they would want to say in that moment though they know they simply could not or should not. That voice was this one, the one he distinctly heard now on the wind.

iiindentAround him, towering pines with pale trunks and rigid bark swayed gently, their tops grazing those beside them into the east at the next powerful gust. The rustling of their needles created a soothing music of the night, a night that howled opportunity and excitement. As if to answer his thoughts, another gust, this one stronger than the last, nearly picked up the Dane and carried him along with it, somewhere he did not know of, somewhere into the east. When the earth beneath began to curve upward, and suddenly the trek became more difficult to make, Kronos realized that he was scaling a rather steep hill. Glyfs they had called them back at home, a rare sight to see where he came from. The pines had been so thick and clustered together atop the terrain that he had hardly noticed the change in elevation, until he was starting to pant harder and harder with the more effort it took. Where am I? He suddenly pondered, pausing briefly to glance around his dark surroundings. Nothing, there was only pitch-blackness and the ominous pines in every angle around him. They loomed above, as if taunting him, glaring down with malice.

iiindentThe drive and motive that had guided him before then suddenly disappeared, and the voice that he managed to conjure within vanished with it, almost causing him to feel lonely. The wind that blew the pines became less of a relaxing melody and rather a sinister silence that went on for longer than it needed to. Kronos felt a chill run through his spine. He wasn’t afraid, not particularly, but rather waiting for something terrible to happen in an unnerving anticipation. The further he went, the descent down the hill became far more of a task than anything, for he used twice as much effort to pick his way through the underbrush and avoid losing his hold, thus sending him tumbling down its slope. He mastered the technique of placing one paw on the surface he wanted to use, then resting a quarter of his weight on top of it. This saved him plenty of slips and slides as he went along, calming his initial worries and relaxing his tension. The wind, the rustling, the darkness; it all returned to play its soothing melody.

iiindentEverything seemed to smooth to a halt once more as Kronos neared his way down the glyf and onto the other side, a pulsating rhythm of his heart guiding him onward into the black-abyss. Tall grasses tickled his legs but merely grazed his stomach, not able to reach his looming height. Suddenly, he felt his paw give way, nearly slipping down a hole in the earth! The Dane jumped back, an annoyed snort pushing through his nostrils as he narrowed his gaze down the hole. A rather large hole it was, longer and wider than just a normal hole in the dirt. This hole stretched into a wide ravine, indents of various caves within, stone ledges that formed bridges between the two sides. What a strange sight in the middle of a forest… could it truly be real? That question plagued the dog’s mind for a few seconds or so as he continued to scan the magnificent formation, but that thought left him as well as all of the doubt he may have held onto before. This is where he belonged. A burst of recognition filtered through his veins, a weird sensation he didn’t happen to know the cause of. Something within his complicated-mind wanted him at the place and to stay there. The feeling of home and security washed over him as if he was actually back in his hometown, where he knew he was never welcomed again. And so, in that very spot in the grasses before the ravine, he laid in exhaustion from the endless travel, resting his sore paws.

iiindentWhen the crickets chirped their final song, and the birds began their own tune, a sliver or red peeked over the horizon. “Hello again.” Kronos murmured to the rising orb of fire in the sky. He perched atop a glyf adjacent to the ravines, glaring behind into the forest below, where now that it was light, he could recognize its beauty. “I’ve got a lot to do.” He grumbled in silent reply, then ducked back into the forest for his return.

iiindentHe did, in fact, have a lot to do.

It was almost time for the next gathering, and everyone in the clan was completely hyped. They wanted to meet some new dogs - they wanted fun and adventures! No one new had joined the pack in a while, most likely on account of the bitter cold weather, and the death of the only male pup in Pepper's litter had devastated everyone.

His fur had been just a bit shorter than that of his sisters, and he had been just a bit smaller. The pack was deep in mourning for almost the entire moon. Now they were just beginning to lift from the fog of depression as the two little sisters became big enough to move about and play, and my were they a handful!

There was a newcomer in their pack - a male German Shepherd by the name of Felix. He had belonged to a pack that was now disbanded and while he did not speak much of his past, he did maintain a very stoic and serious demeanor that convinced the others he had likely seen a lot. He was taking quite the liking to Linette, although they didn't get to spend much time together. He just found her so elegant and sleek. One day he decided to ask her to be his, and she delightedly accepted. It turns out she was enamored of her gold-and-black suitor just as much as he was with her! A little romance was just the thing to cheer everyone up and the entire pack joined in singing songs to the two lovebirds, hoping that energetic Linette would perk up her often-sad partner.

Zuli was finally ready to have her pups as well, although a bit later would have been more convenient. Nevertheless, they are going to have to face whatever happens next. They just hope her litter will fare better. Unlike Pepper, she has been a part of the pack this entire time and as the leader's mate, she was getting exceptional care. Trance was going into her den and checking on her almost hourly, it seemed. Couldn't be too careful...

Paws raked through cold snow, kicking up the icy substance as the canine desperately sprinted through the thick pine forest. His ears were pinned to his skull as though trying to block out the horrific wailing of a dog in pain. They yowled with agony, their terrorizing screams howling in his ears. He could not escape the sound, nor the memories of the frightened face of the shiba inu Acca as he sunk his fangs into her throat, feeling her terrified heartbeat stop as he shook her in his jaws.

“Octavius.” A soft voice called, surrending the wolf-like husky to a abrupt halt. His yellow eyes widened in frenzied terror as he felt skin brush against his legs, colder than the icy snow that had begun to pelt down onto him. He turned his head to see Acca. Her eyes possessed no familiar amber glow of joy, nor did her tail wag violently as she studied him with her focused eyes. Her eyes, oh gods, her eyes. They were emotionless pools of inky black darkness, with black tears dripping down her cheeks, staining her cheeks. Her throat was bleeding the same black substance, the deep puncture wounds that he had inflicted upon her visible as she craned her head up to look at him.

“This is the afterlife that I will endure for eternity, because the gods did not approve of me.” Her voice, once light and friendly, was emotionless and dead. “This is what you did to me, you killed me, only to have me die again in the eyes of my gods and all who loved me.”

He felt a instinctual yearning to apologize, though as he opened his maw he spoke nothing of this guilt. “No! You did that to yourself, you weak pup!” He snarled back, viciously lunging forth to strike his paws into her side, leaning down, his muzzle centimetres from her throat. “You deserved it.”

Hee towered over her, ready to make the killing bite, before his vision faded out, replaced by a pool of darkness. The cries of terror from Acca echoed in his ears, ringing within them as his vision suddenly returned. He swiftly lifted his head up from his paws, his breaths quick and eyes frantic as he looked around, trying to make sense of what had happened. It wasn’t real. It wasn’t. The husky assured himself worriedly, recounting the horrible words he had snapped at Acca. Why did I do that? I didn’t want to… or maybe I did in the moment, but I don’t now. Oh gods, help me.

Around him where the sleeping bodies of a few fellow packmates, and beyond that, at the doors of the castle room, where two guards standing watch, Stheno and Pheme. Stheno kept her intent gaze focused as she stood, but Pheme appeared acutely focused on the kangal next to her rather than her assignment.

Octavius felt an instinctual pull to share his supposed dream —or rather, nightmare— with Stheno, as he felt as though the high-ranking fea was wise and controlled, although the thought of Pheme possibly eavesdropping and spilling his confidential information worried him immensely. He gave a quick glance in Stheno’s direction, then slumping down with a silent whine.

He was being chased. Chased not by Acca, but his own demons, and what he feared the most, was that he wasn’t trying to run away. He was embracing them.

“What have I become?”

“You know, I think you’re my most frequently injured patient, Kronos.” The ibizan hound, Daedalus, chuckled lightly as he watched the mixed-breed gingerly rise to his paws. “You really need to be more careful.”

“Yes, Socium.” He replied courteously, dipping his head in a respectful manner as he tested his weight on each of his paws.

Daedalus shook his head slowly, slapping his tail on the larger canine’s muzzle. “Enough with calling me Socium, I’ve told you before I much prefer Daedalus. You needn’t remind me of my rank everytime you address me.” He scolded gently, continuing to bear a friendly smile.

Kronos, flashing a sharp grin, nodded his head. “Sorry, Daedalus. It’s kind of instinctual to call you that.”

“Just as you call me sweetness all the time?” Another voice suddenly chimed in. The caller was Veradis, a fierce pitbull mix that so happened to also be the mate of the cane corso before her. She brushed against him briefly before tilting her head to Daedalus. “So, is Kronos ready to go back to his regular duties?”

“Yes, but I would caution he sits out on intense hunting or patrolling missions for now. ” He paused, watching Kronos and Veradis share a look of concern. “And if it is Erebus you’re worried about snapping, I wouldn’t.” His eyes twinkled as he scooped up a few leaves from his herb pile. “We already discussed it, so long as you’re doing something to contribute to pack work then it’s all good to rest for now.”

Kronos smiled with relief, grateful that the hound went to speak with Erebus. He had a track record to get injured, and now Erebus’ anger was steadily rising. He recalled how the bully kutta knocked him into the frozen lake after he had sprained a paw, threatening to drown him if he didn’t pull his wait around pack. The corso wasn’t one to be easily frightened, but the wrath of Erebus was something that even the most valiant would cower at. “Thank you.” He murmured gratefully to Daedalus, who simply wagged his tail and pranced away, presumably to the royal quarters to visit his pups.

“Now that Daedalus is gone...” Veradis began hesitantly, “I wanted to speak to you about something.”

Tilting his creamy-furred head, the brute blinked quickly. “What’s wrong?” He inquired, a look of concern worn upon his face.

Veradis shook her head abruptly. “No, no. It’s nothing bad—I hope— uh, well, it’s about us. I’ve, well… I’ve been wondering.” She inhaled slowly, closing her eyes as she did so. “Well, I’ve been thinking about, um…” The pitbull seemed nervous to explain just exactly what she seemed to be attempting to tell him, but after firmly planting her rump onto the floor and exhaling, her eyes flashed with determination. “I’ve been thinking about starting a family, Kronos. We’ve been mates since we joined the kennel, but we never really thought about it. I’ve loved pups, and I have always wanted a family, but I never felt ready. Now, now I do.”

Kronos studied her expression in silence, his brows furrowed in intent thought. He opened his maw to speak, waiting momentarily as he searched for words. “Veradis. The second I met you, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you. To spend the rest of my life with my own pups and my mate, that would be a life well lived.”

Veradis crashed into him, eyes warm with loving affection as she pressed her nose against his muzzle, embracing him. “A life well lived indeed.”

“And then, the great doberman leapt down from the ledge, sinking his massive fangs into the old kangal. His powerful jaws clamped around his throat, crushing all life out the weak elder.” Bellona grinned viciously as she saw the expressions on the three pups that cowered infront of her. Progeny of the great Diablo and horrid Mira, the trio that sat at her paws seemed to possess the spirit of their weak mother, earning the doberman to curl her lips into a disdainful snarl.

“And that was our dad who did that?” Leto asked with a squeak.

“As I said about fifty times before, yes.” Bellona snapped back to the young pup.

“What was he like?” Diabol asked curiously, brown eyes wide as he awaited a answer.

Bellona smiled bitterly as she remembered him, lifeless in the jaws of Erebus. That bastard dog, he ruined my life, and now I work under his command. She looked down at the pups, stretching out a forepaw to tuck Diabol closer to her. “Like a nightmare. He was cruel, unforgiving and harsh. He was the kind of dog everyone respected, until your mother came along. She was a brat,” Her claws raked across the stone tile, and Leto & her sister uneasily stepped away from Bellona. As she began to speak again, she slowly began to put a paw on Diabol’s head, putting increasingly more pressure as she spoke. “She was a house dog with no respect for anything, but somehow he wanted her. Not any other dog, her. She infected his mind, made him go soft.”

“Bellona! Please stop, you’re hurting me.” Diabol began to whine in pain as she shoved him into the stone.

“Hurting you? How funny. How do you think I felt, huh? When he picked her over me. How do you think I felt?”

“Bell-Bellona please!” Styx and Leto began to cry out miserably as blood began to pour down Diabol’s head. They began to nip at her paws, though she battered them with her other paws, causing them to tumble into the approaching wolf, Valerik.

“Let the little one go, Bell.” Valerik commanded with a low growl of warning. “Now.”

Bellona sneered, narrowing her eyes at Valerik as she pushed away Diabol, who came tumbling into the wolf’s paws. “Oh come on Valerik, we were just playing a little game.”

“Was the game called try to hurt your old leader’s pups?” Valerik snapped, giving her a scolding look before ushering the three pups away.

Bellona growled before striding away past the four canines angrily.
