The Imperium was busy with the upcoming tiro evaluation, new members, and most notably, the new royal progeny. It was a great event in the kennel when the young of the leader was born, yet some thought it was wrong to take in the orphan pups, that only those royal by blood could claim such a high rank in the kennel.
xxxAlthough, no dog would dare say that to Erebus’ face. It was the talk that would only be spoken in hushed whispers and pointed glares. Just as now, where Pheme, Pallas and Remus sat huddled together in the castle courtyard, glaring at the five pups as they played with their fathers.
xxxDaedalus was lying down, sprawled out on a few skinned animal pelts, grinning with delight as Anaideia and Alastor infront of him, squeakily growling as they play-fought. Angelos slept between his forepaws, resting her head on his paw as she dozed off. The other two, Keres and Hecate, were hanging on to Erebus’ every word as he spoke with Diomedes.
xxx“Are the three tiros washed up and prepared for their battle?” The bully kutta asked, his voice deep and commanding as he spoke. It was without a doubt that he was leader to any dog who watched him. Massive, imposing stature, gleaming muscles and a presence that could send some dogs cowering with fear.
xxx“Yes, I spoke to each individually and—” Diomedes paused as the sharp pain nipped at his tail, turning his head to look at Hecate, who held the tip of his tail in her paws.
xxxErebus chuckled with delight, eyes warm as he looked at the little pup. Diomedes didn’t share the same feelings towards the pesky child, though tried not to make it apparent.
xxxCoughing and jerking his tail away from Hecate, the great dane continued. “And they’re ready to begin their evaluations.”
xxx“Good, good. Tell them to go the front of the castle, on the steps of the tile stairs. The pack will be there to watch them.”
xxxNodding his head obediently, the harlequin male walked away in pursuit of the three tiros.
xxxErebus turned to Hecate and Keres, who were now playing with Daedalus. The Imperator padded towards them, letting out a soft bark to the pups to welcome them forwards. The pups seemed to make it a challenge of who could get to him faster, for quickly all five had suddenly started to sprint towards him as fast as their short legs could take them.
xxxAngelos quickly took the lead, bursting ahead of the other four into Erebus’ paws. She tumbled over her head, landing on her back and staring up at the Bully Kutta. He lowered his head, gently nosing her up to her feet and pressing his muzzle against her head with a smile. He looked up at the rest of the little pups, who sat with tongues lolling happily infront of him. “Go over and see Stheno, she’s going to be watching over you five for awhile.”
xxxAnaideia shoved her way past her littermates to press her body against the imperator’s leg, whining. “Why can’t I come? I’m the oldest!”
xxx“You’re still very young.” Another voice chimed in smoothly. It was Stheno, the tall kangal fae. “Besides, who said Erebus was doing anything fun? Euryale, Regulus and I are going to be hunting some mice in the castle.”
xxx“I’m going with Stheno because I’m the best hunter here!” Hecate announced proudly, trotting over to the kangal.
xxxHecate’s words started a volley of yipping as the littermates began to bound over to Stheno, all claiming to be the better hunt. Erebus watched with a smile before turning around to trot over to Daedalus, who laid down on his back. He lowered his head, nuzzling the hound on the cheek before speaking.
xxx“The kennel is waiting for us to begin the evaluation; we ought to start heading there soon.”
xxxDaedalus nodded, rolling over and rising to his paws, pressing against his mate as they began to walk out the castle courtyard.

Octavius paced on the icy stone steps of the entrance to the castle, trying to calm his nerves. The tiro evaluation would define him as a dog, and if he even made so little as a misstep in his fight he could be sent from becoming apart of the canes imperators to a servus.
xxxA deep bark jolted him out of his thoughts, and his heartbeat faltered for a moment in panic. Erebus. There he was, beginning to recite the age old words that called upon the gods to watch the evaluation. He was no longer just in the eyes of his packmates, he was in the eyes of the gods. He looked around at his friends—no, his enemies. Acca and Alerio.
xxxAlerio was a well built dog, muscles rippling beneath mottled grey fur. He was smaller than Octavius, but tall for a heeler. Acca was, well, hopeless. She was spunky, sure, but she was tiny in comparison to the two brutes she would face. She’d get through it though, she was a good dog and the gods would see that.
xxx“Octavius, Acca and Alerio, step forth. You all will begin the age old tradition that commences your journey from becoming a full fledged member of the Imperium. The rules are simple, you will be loose by either being pushed out the boundaries of the ring, or...” He paused, cracking a devilish smile. “being killed by another dog. And remember, no move is too harsh and no words are too brutal. Use everything you have learnt, the manipulation, the anger, the terror. Use it all. These dogs are not your friends now, they are threats, obstacles you must surpass to achieve your goal.” He began to trot down the stairs of the castle porch, taking his spot next to Daedalus. “Let the fight begin.”
xxxOctavius pinned his ears to his head as Erebus’ words rang through his ears, slowly turning his head to look at his opponents.
xxxAlerio was bounding towards him with bared fangs, his blue eyes flashing with anger. The dog looked just mad as he lunged forwards, slamming his forepaws onto Octavius’ shoulders and snapping his teeth at the husky mix.
xxx“Alerio!” He cried, stumbling back as the dog began to bite his ears. Alerio used the opportunity to leap onto Octavius, scratching his face with his back paws as he dug his claws into his skin.
xxx“Oh shut up you blundering idiot. I’ve been waiting to sink my fangs into your pathetic flesh for some time. You have no place in this pack, you are weak, you ar—”
xxxOctavius grabbed onto Alerio’s hind leg, dragging him off his back as he yanked his leg. Alerio let out a pitiful whine as he fell onto the stone. The husky slowly walked towards him, slamming a paw to his throat before letting him tumble down the stairs. Octavius watching with a merciless stare. So this was how they were going play.
xxxHe turned his head, yellow eyes narrowed and consumed with hunger for blood. The howls of approval from the Imperium had risen in volume as they began to chant his name, only fueling him as he strode towards Acca, who was already out of the ring. “Acca, Acca, why don’t you come here? The game is over, you don’t need to fear me.” He purred, watching as the much smaller shiba inu trembled with fear.
xxx“Please, Octavius, leave me. I’m already dead to this pack, they’re going to k—”
xxxHer words were cut short as the brute locked his jaws around her throat, killing her. He turned around to face the Imperium, carrying her limp body as if it were a prize and taking in their cheers with his chest swelling with pride.
