so, two days ago i bought two female rats, about 2 months old, i'd guess.
today i tried to lure them out of the cage with various treats (they started taking treats from my hand on the first day), but they just stop at the door, take the treat and go back to the cage, hiding in the igloo. i tried giving them baby food on the spoon, but they just can't get out of the cage, no matter what i do.
does anybody have any good tips on how to get them out? i thought of picking them up and getting them out like that, but i'm scared that they might get too frightened and bite me.

It sounds like you're doing pretty good so far - but these things take time. It can take days or even weeks before a timid rat will be comfortable enough to voluntarily leave their cage. Patience and perseverance are key. They'll get there eventually, just let them go at their own pace. Forcing them could possibly make things worse.
When I got my very first rats, Hugo and Humphrey, they were practically feral. It took several days of spending time and feeding them treats through the cage before they'd approach me, and then another couple weeks before I could even touch them. All in all it took me about a month before they happily let me pick them up for cuddles and scritches.

What are peoples opinions on the Omlet Qute hamster cage?
Just seen an ad for one secondhand, and I'm wondering if it'd be better for Lola. She's currently in a Living Word Eco, but I don't entirely trust her not to find a way out of it. Or destroy it, I have caught her chewing a couple of times.
The Omlet looks more escape proof, and has the height, which I think she'd enjoy. I can't find sized for it though?
She's so hard to eeep occupied, I've never known a hamster be so...intense.
*EDIT* And if it's not suitable for Syrians, what about for mice?

It's not suitable
hamsters do better with floorspace than that, and it's more designed for fitting in a stylish home than for meeting welfare needs. For the price, you could buy two alaskas! The barred floor is bad for little feet, and I'm not sure a suitable wheel would fit. I'd also be worried about the vertical tunnel, and wouldn't buy it for any rodent.

Yeah, I've found measurements for it now, didn't realize it was
that much under standard, I always though those things were supposed to be huge. The picture on the ad is pretty deceptive too.
I was planning on making modifications to the shelf/tunnel (I don't like the vertical tunnel either), and ripping out that wheel. Lola's a big ham, so she needs a 12".
Oh well, I'll just have to keep coming up with other ideas to keep her occupied

I've never owned a hamster, but good luck love ^w^
I'm in the process of making Meatball's instagram; but I'll happily update that she's comfortable and doing fantastic.
I'll post a photo of the new cage I built a little later this week when my schedule isn't so hectic.
And I've got a new breeding buck coming in for my rattery here soon. He's odd-eyed and so sweet <3

vist wrote:hey there ,
so monday i am getting a few rats , but they have been living in a mouse cage , sigh ,, i've been trying to look for a better cage , i have a few here that can be temporary , but , i could use a bigger one ,, c:
what do you all have as a cage , and could i have some suggestions ? links ? it has to be able to house three , please ,, < 3
thank you all so much ,, < 3
a single rat should typically live in the minimum of a two-rat cage, so 72 x 36 x 44. i haven't found a minimum for three rats, yet i've found a minimum of 70 x 70 x 44 cage that is specifically designed for three rats (terenzani michaelangelo).
here's a list of some appropriately sized cage, some bigger, some of 3 rat minimum:
i hope this gives you some kind of idea. i haven't done a lot of research into all of these cages, but i definitely recommend the critter nations/ferret nations with chicken/any form of wire.
