magnolia padded across the frozen lake, careful to avoid the delicate spots, however her lithe frame was not likely to cave in the ice. she could see the palm trees in the near distance, which made her heart beat faster. in truth, when the starry cats came to her in her sleep, she did not believe them when they told her of an island, in the middle of a lake. after all, what gods would decide that was a good place for a piece of land to be? setting her paws on the snow-covered shores of the island was one of the most comforting and rewarding feelings she had ever felt- perhaps because for the past sun-up to sundown she had been at risk of falling through the ice and drowning, never to reach her destination. she had to believe this was her destiny, after all, magnolia was all alone in the world. this, and her dreams, were all she had left. following directions provided to her by a small seed named jayseed, she padded west toward caverns. walking inside the pitch black cave, blue stars shown in the walls. magnolia was told of these glow-worms that would appear like stars if any cat was quiet enough. she settled near a pool of water, far beyond the glowing worm cave, where the only means of guidance were her nose, whiskers, and tail. she imagined this is what it must be like to be blind: suddenly, she felt suffocated. magnolia rose to her paws, ready to leap away in fear, only to awaken in a field where the moon shown brightly. she glanced around bewildered, wondering if she had fallen asleep.
“magnolia,” a familiar voice murmured, a soft breeze moving the fur along the gray she-cat’s spine. she whirled around, shock rippling through her, her eyes beset upon a cat she thought she would never see again. despite the stars in her pelt, the faded far away look in her once bright blue eyes, and the healthy layer of muscle and fur on her, magnolia recognized her once sickly mother. she only rushed to petaldance’s side, fearing that if she spoke it might make the vision go away.
“you are still as beautiful as the day i left you,” petaldance gushed, her silver fur shining like metal underneath the moon.
“where are we?” magnolia finally murmured.
“you’re in starclan, dear one.” her mother replied, beckoning to the flourishing trees, flowers, and wild-life. “there is no pain, no misfortune, and no boundaries here.”
“a cat visited me in my dreams...” she whispered, disbelieving that her mother stood in front of her. that a place like this existed.
“jayseed is your younger brother. he died the same day you breathed your first breath- and he has been watching over you ever since.” petaldance explained.
“and what of father? is he here, too?”
“your father made... mistakes. he is here, but not on this side of the border,” her mother said quietly.
“you said there were no borders. i want to see him.” magnolia insisted.
“in time. but first, you must know that i called you here for a reason.” the silver tabby paused, glancing around quickly; as if looking for support. “starclan is a faith i have always been loyal to. when i discovered i was pregnant with you and your brother, i knew that i had made a mistake. your father was not in the same clan as i, and both of us were cast away for breaking the sacred code we swore to protect. so we ran, like cowards. we decided never to tell our kits of the clans- and even after you were born, i never got the chance to.”
“so why are you telling me now?” magnolia suppressed her shock, and the million questions going through her brain.
“because you are going to mend our mistakes. create a clan loyal to each other- and to the warrior code. if you accept, i, along with others, will grant you nine lives.” petaldance paused, holding up her tail when magnolia tried to speak. “you are alone in this world, my darling. be alone no longer; allow starclan to guide you and others to follow you loyally. this island is where you will begin your clan; safe from harm, full of prey and herbs.”
magnolia wasn’t sure if this was a choice, if she could really say no. how could she, looking into the eyes of her mother, whom she thought lost forever?
“i will mend your mistakes, mother. i will begin a clan.”
“name it wiltedclan, for the flowers that wilt and lose their life only to come back again in rich-harvest.” petaldance instructed. “now come, we must give you your nine lives.”
“who?” she asked curiously, watching as her mother nodded toward the field. cats began to appear; some familiar, like little jayseed and his blue fur and others unfamiliar; like a large black cat with a torn ear. she counted nine in total, including her mother and brother. magnolia understood that each of them were here to gift her wisdom and a life.
“hello, sister,” the voice leaving jayseed’s muzzle was older, more grown than he looked. “you must leave your old name behind. i name you meadowlark, after the singing birds and the field we were born in.” he paused. “i give you the life of compassion to stand up for those who cannot fight for themselves.” he reached up as far as he could, meadowlark leaning down the rest of the way, as electricity surged through her. she quivered and flinched backwards, the intensity of the life shocking. a blue tom-cat, similar to jayseed except grown, approached her next.
“i am blueblaze, and i am your mother’s father. you never met me, but i have been guiding you since before you were born.” he reached closer to her. “i give you the life of strength, to fight for yourself and your clan; your family.” the next life made her claws unsheathe and dig into the soft grass under her paws. it was like a small flame writhing through her veins. the black tom she saw earlier approached her, flicking his torn ear apprehensively. his fur was faded more than the others.
“i am heathenshine, the first medicine cat of your mother’s clan, and i give you the life of wisdom. use it wisely, and remember, your medicine cat is your closest ally.” he dipped his head, only their ears touching, but the third life was the hardest so far. acid shot through her bones as she struggled to stand. her fourth life was given by a cat she had known well - a brown tabby with white paws - her adoptive mother kestrel. she rushed to greet her, trembling as she was reunited.
“you knew me before, as your foster mother. although at the time you had no idea i was your bestfriend’s mother- and sworn to look after you until you were grown. my name is kestrelflight and i give you loyalty.” she touched her tail tip to meadowlark’s shoulder, but this time she was braced for the pain. she stood tall, shaking, as she awaited the next life. her mother approached her next, pride and pain in her starry eyes.
“i am petaldance, and i give you the life of unconditional love.” the silver molly touched her nose to meadowlark’s, the severity of the life rocking her to her core. her legs caved in and she dropped to the ground. “it is the most painful of your lives, because it is the most meaningful.” her mother whispered in her ear, before allowing the next cat to take her place.
“i am sandstar, the leader that cast your mother out. i am here to help her amend her mistakes. accept this life of forgiveness, so that you may treat everyone with kindness.” the life was excruciating; but perhaps that was because forgiveness does not come easy. a tortoiseshell molly approached her next, admiration swelling in her gaze.
“i am frecklespots, and i was the medicine cat that helped your mother give birth. i give you hope. whatever you may encounter, you shall feel hopeful that you will overcome,” the medicine cat touched her ears to meadowlark, who lurched at the swarm of angry wasps inside her body. before she could hardly take a breath, the eighth cat, a ginger tabby with one ear, approached her.
“hello young meadowlark. i am one-ear, an elder who saw many moons. i give you the life of acceptance for the things you cannot change.” he touched his tail to her chest, and she gasped as ice spread through her like frostbite. finally, the ninth cat, a silver tom similar to her mother’s appearance, approached.
“hello meadowlark, i am flamespirit, your mother’s littermate. i give you kindness, my niece, for everyone you may encounter.” the ninth life was not the most painful, but it did knock her off her paws. by the time she had risen, all the cats of starclan were calling out her name: meadowstar.
by the time she woke up, her entire body ached with sores. she had been asleep for a long time; and she felt more renewed than ever. she carefully made her way out of the cave, using her whiskers and tail, glad to see daylight. she had slept through the sunset and the sunrise the next morning, a thought that made her chuckle. meadowstar hardly ever slept as a sprout, and especially not as a grown loner. she stretched at the mouth of the cave, her belly brushing the grass. she rolled over, exposing her stomach to the sky and sighing softly. she felt more lonely than before, knowing all of the cats in starclan, her family, were free to run forever as they pleased with company. she silently wished for a medicine cat, adhering to heathenshine's advice.
