O W L C L A NNumber of Cats: 1 (1 M | 0 F | 0 NB)
Next Star Rock Visit: September 6, 2018
Archive Thread: boop
Serving Size: 2A mass of black fur that was a cat came bounding over a hill, a pair of luminous orange eyes narrowed in concentration. The longhaired black tom looked far ahead of him and, on seeing the moon's reflection on the lake ahead of him between a break in the trees, hurried toward the body of water. The black tom halted just at the water's edge as he gazed across the massive lake, jaws open wide with awe. The lake was wider than anything the loner had ever seen, and its dark waters were bathed in the unearthly silver glow of the moon overhead. Instinctively, the longhaired tom, whose name was Crow, backed away from the dream-like scenery expanding in front of his very eyes. He only jolted from his stance when a voice came from behind.
"Welcome."
Crow turned around and saw the shimmering form of a cat he had been seeing in his recent dreams-transparent, with every inch of his body bedecked with stars. The starry tom meowed again, his rich tenor voice carrying over the serene forest, "Greetings, Crow. I am Owl Moon, the first leader, and founder, of OwlClan, whose territory you are now standing on." Before the black loner could ask any questions, however, the one called Owl Moon continued, "As we explained earlier, you are a direct descendant of the cats who once lived here." Scores of star-speckled cats appeared at Owl Moon's side as the brown-and-white tom swallowed. He spoke four words next, ending chills down Crow's spine.
"We need your help."
"My help?" Crow echoed after a few moments, "What can long-dead cats from the past gain fro asking for help from a living one?" A ginger tom next to Owl Moon pleaded. "Rebuild our lost Clan. Make it strong again." A pale gray tabby she-cat added, "Restore OwlClan to its former glory." Crow narrowed his eyes as he asked, "What's in it for me?" "We will grant to you the nine lives of a proper Clan leader," Owl Moon promised, "and you will forever be praised by your future cats as the one who saved OwlClan." Crow's ears flattened as he nodded. 'Good for me,' the loner thought; he asked aloud, "How would this work?" "You are already in the real of spirits," the ginger tom informed Crow, whose eyes widened at the reply, "you are currently asleep at the edge of the lake." Owl Moon added, "we will now start your leadership ceremony, but there is a single catch." The pale gray tabby she-cat from before meowed, "As leader, you will bear the word 'Moon' in respect for our clan traditions, but you may choose the first part of your name." Crow thought for a moment before he meowed, "Dark Moon. I want to be called Dark Moon."
"All right then," Owl Moon meowed, he and his cats beginning to move away, "come, we will show you where you may contact us again." Crow followed, trying his best to wrap his head around the fact that dead cats had asked him to lead a Clan. He asked, as trees gave way to a shallow gorge hidden by a grove of pine trees, "Is this where you once lived?" "It was," the ginger tom from before meowed, "where all Clan cats lived, our camp." The tom gave a long, sad look before wordlessly falling back into step with the rest of the starry cats. Crow decided not to press any further, and walked silently.
Crow stopped. They had gone past the dens the starry cats had called 'Sharpclaws' den' and 'softpaw's den', and was left staring at a tall rock in the middle of camp. It was just high enough for a full-grown cat to jump onto, and its flat surface provided a place to sit or stand comfortably. Owl Moon meowed, "This is the Star Rock. Come at moonhigh to speak with us." "Otherwise," the ginger tom added, "this is where we conducted Clan meetings." Nodding, Crow asked, "Is this where-" "you will be given your lives," Owl Moon interrupted, "correct." The group of starry cats seemed to double -no, triple- in size right in front of Crow's eyes, as the three cats who had spoken to him until now moved to stand with the rest.
A few moments passed before a beautiful lilac tabby she-cat came to face the black loner. Her pale green eyes seemed to stare into Crow's very soul as the starry cat meowed, "Greetings. I am Brimstar, the last leader of NightClan, a predecessor to OwlClan. I give you the life of humility. Know when it is all right to accept help from others." The lilac tabby she-cat stretched to touch noses with Crow. The black loner flinched and recoiled back, reeling from the pain that shot up through the rest of his body. When the pain had faded away, Brimstar was replaced by a large black Maine Coon tom.
"I am Swooping Raven," the tom announced, "last Tribe-Healer of the Tribe of the Shining Lake. My Tribe was, too, a predecessor to OwlClan." The tom paused before he meowed, "NightClan and our Tribe lived in harmony with each other for many moons, and, after a terrible rogue attack, both were devastated. Under the truce of the full moon, my Tribemates and Brimstar's Clanmates agreed to become one as OwlClan." Taking a deep breath, the former Tribe-Healer meowed solemnly, "I give you the life of mercy. Never overlook any helpless cat, and show mercy to those who cannot defend themselves." Again, the acute sense of pain returned as Swooping Raven touched noses with Crow.
In a similar fashion, Crow received a life of courage from a 'softpaw', or young cat training to be a sharpclaw, called Dusty Morning; a life of endurance from a former Clan elder called Crashing Thunder; a life of forethought from a former deputy called Fiery Sky; a life of compassion from a former queen called Soft Feathers; and a life of mentorship from a former NightClan warrior called Longwhisker. The lives had rushed into Crow like a flood would into a dry gorge, but Crow had endured all the pain without complain. Each cat had their own story to tell, and each cat also had different traditions and rules OwlClan had. It humbled Crow immensely, their history and story of their downfall, and he now truly wished to continue their legacy.
"Just two lives remain," a voice jolted Crow from his thoughts; looking up, the black tom saw it was the ginger tom from before. The starry cat dipped his head and meowed, "I am Blaze Moon, last leader of OwlClan before badgers scattered my Clan far and wide." He hung his head low in shame as he continued, "I was too proud to accept help from a passing group of rogues who offered to help in exchange for safe passage. We were massacred," he concluded brokenly. Crow swallowed, "I will do my best to rebuild your Clan." "Our Clan," Blaze Moon corrected him, "and we are eternally grateful for your help. I give you the life of tireless energy. Use it to defend your Clan tirelessly; may your energy never run out when trouble arises." This life did not hurt as much as the others, but it did fill Crow with the sense of duty. Crow meowed firmly, "I won't let you down." "Thank you," Blaze Moon murmured, before he, too, took his place among the other starry-pelted cats.
Owl Moon stepped forward and purred, "Again, we must thank you for undertaking this journey to the grounds of your ancestors, and for promising to make OwlClan great again." He took a deep breath and meowed solemnly, "I give you the life of faith in your Clan and in StarClan. You are never alone. Put your faith in us StarClan to give you guidance, and put your faith in the cats of your Clan, for they will not fail to answer your call at the Clan's darkest hour." The life that flowed into Crow came at him like a rockslide - sharp, jagged pain seared through the black tom as he struggled to remain on his paws. When the pain enventually went away, Crow was face to face with hundreds of StarClan cats as they sighed contentedly. Owl Moon dipped his head before declaring, "I hail you by your new name, Dark Moon. Your old life is no more. You have now received the nine lives of a leader, and StarClan grants you the guardianship of OwlClan. Defend it well; care for the young and old; honor your ancestors, the traditions of the Clan, and the Warrior Code; live each life with pride and dignity." The cats of StarClan then threw back each of their heads and shouted into the night sky:
"Dark Moon! Dark Moon! Dark Moon!"
Once the shouts died down, most StarClan cats faded away; however, Blaze Moon stayed behind. The ginger tom meowed, "The night is waning, and we must return - you to the world of the waking, and I to the stars. You must never mention what you experienced tonight to anyone." "I would like to request a cat," Dark Moon burst out; realizing what he had done, the newly-established leader of OwlClan continued sheepishly, "There can't be a Clan unless there's more cats, right?" Blaze Moon dipped his head in acknowledgement before he, too, faded away.
Waking in the real world, Dark Moon forced his paws over the grassy terrain as he rushed toward where he remembered the OwlClan camp had been. 'We will rise once more!' the black tom promised himself silently as he ran.
OwlClan will live again.

"Mama!" A small voice mewled pitifully, catching the attention of a pale gray tabby she-cat, "it's so cold!" The gray tabby queen glanced at the kit who'd spoken, a beautiful blue lynx point she-cat, and meowed sadly, "I'm so sorry, love, we have to move on!" Glancing behind her, the mother heard movement from the left. Terrified, she yowled, "Run, kittens!" and nosed her three kits forward. The kittens squeaked with terror as they forced their tiny legs to fly over the snow-covered ground. Behind, a voice, belonging to that of a tomcat, called, "Wait, hold on!" Another, that of a she-cat, added pleadingly, "Please! Stop!" The gray-furred mother and her kittens came to a skidding halt as the snow-covered ground gave way to the gray pebble-littered shores of the lake. The gray tabby she-cat instinctively wrapped her tail protectively over her kittens and arched her back as she attempted to intimidate her pursuers.
Two black cats, one a tom and the other a she-cat, appeared from the pine forest, their dark fur a stark contrast against the pristine white of the ground. The short-furred one, a tom, meowed, worried, "Are you all right?" The long-furred she-cat added, "And the kits?" The gray-furred queen mewed, taking in air in gulps as she was left breathless from all the running, "We're fine, thank you." When she had calmed down somewhat, the mother asked, "Who are you, and why were you following us?" Before the black she-cat could speak, presumably to explain their situation, the black tom spoke first. He meowed formally, hiding his paws under his tail in a sign of peace, "My name is Dark Moon, leader of OwlClan. I was wondering if you needed help, but you were running to danger." He nodded toward the long-furred black she-cat as he added, "Long Shadow here tracked you from the northern end of our territory, and reported back to me." The one called Long Shadow explained, "I once had two kits, and while I had them taken away from me by my then-housefo- I mean Twolegs," she corrected herself hastily, "I didn't want to have the same thing happen to you too." Dark Moon meowed quietly, "My Clan is but three members big. Please, join us, and help rebuild my ancestors' Clan to its former glory." The mother sighed and meowed, "My name is Arnicastream, of RavenClan. My Clan was dying, and I had to leave. I didn't want my kits to have to die in that forsaken place..." She trembled as she murmured, "StarClan had abandoned us."
Arnicastream
"No," Dark Moon corrected her firmly, "StarClan did not abandon you. They knew what was happening to your old Clan, but were powerless to stop its demise. They are guiding spirits," the raven-black tom explained, his orange eyes narrowing somewhat, "not all-powerful gods." He sighed and continued, "Same with my Clan, OwlClan. Until a few sunrises ago, it was but a dream, dreamt by my ancestors and shared with myself. I came here, to these grounds, and they told me to lead a Clan, OwlClan, just as they -the ancestors- had, countless moons ago." Dark Moon closed his eyes and meowed, his shoulder sagging slightly, "I would love to make that a reality, but leaf-bare came so quickly, and we only have three cats." Arnicastream took a deep breath and meowed, "If you promise shelter and a bright future for my kits, they and I will join your Clan, Dark Moon."
Dark Moon
The black tom was taken aback by the queen's response. He hadn't expected her to come to this sort of conclusion. Dark Moon swallowed and meowed, "We can get through this leafbare together. We will keep you safe, if not absolutely warm, and come newleaf, we can start training your kits in the way of the sharpclaw." "....Sharpclaw?" echoed Arnicastream, "what do you mean?" Dark Moon swallowed again before replying, "Other Clans call them 'warriors'. We follow the ways of the Ancient Ones, the ones who had gone by long before the Clans as you know now. We also follow the ways of the Tribes, as my ancestors were from both Clan and Tribe once." Nodding slowly, Arnicastream meowed, "All right, I think I understand. I also am thinking," she added, a small smile creeping into her lips, "that my kits and I need new names to fit your Clan." Dark Moon nodded, relieved that Arnicastream would join with her kits, "Yes, yes you do. If you wish," he added hastily, "of course." The gray tabby she-cat nodded, "It would mean a fresh start for myself and my kits. I would very much like this to happen." Long Shadows purred, "Welcome to OwlClan!" She meowed happily, "I'll run ahead and tell Pinecone of your coming!" Without another word, the older sharpclaw was gone in a flash. Dark Moon grimaced and apologized, "She's never still, that Shadow. She may be older than even myself, but she has more energy than the rest of the Clan combined!" Chuckling, Arnicastream remarked, "Oh, boy, my kits would beg to differ." Glancing at them, she murmured, "we'd better get to your camp, Dark Moon. They look like they're about to fall asleep on their paws." "Right," Dark Moon nodded briskly; he coaxed the kittens forward, meowing, "I promise that when we get to our camp, you'll love it!" The kits yawned, but did as told, stumbling through the snow between Dark Moon and Arnicastream.
<Sometime later>
Dark Moon
The OwlClan leader yowled, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey meet here, beneath the Star Rock, for a Clan meeting!" Arnicastream, followed by her three well-groomed kittens, came from the nursery den, the gray tabby she-cat's blue eyes shining with curiosity. Smiling in relief at how fast the four had seemed to have settled into the camp, Dark Moon saw Fallen Pinecone, a brown tabby tom, and Long Shadow coming from the sharpclaw's den. Knowing all members of his Clan had assembled, the raven-black tom intoned, "Today, we celebrate the joining of Arnicastream, a queen fleeing from the devastation of her disbanded clan, and her three beautiful kittens!" Shadow and Pinecone whooped with delight as Arnicastream smiled softly. Dark Moon cleared his throat and meowed, "I, Dark Moon, leader of OwlClan, call upon our ancestors to look down on Arnicastream. She has fled the horrors of her disbanded Clan of RavenClan, and hopes to start anew within our Clan." Looking toward the queen, Dark Moon asked calmly, "Do you promise to uphold the warrior code and our traditions, and to defend and protect the Clan, even at the cost of your life?" Arnicastream nodded firmly, meowing, "I do." "Then," Dark Moon called, "by the powers that are vested in me by StarClan and the Tribe of Endless Hunting, I give you your new name. From this day forth, you shall be known as Misty Lake. Our ancestors honor your unwavering loyalty to the code and your strong will to survive, and we welcome you as a full member of OwlClan." He stepped down and touched noses with the gray tabby she-cat, who obviously had gone through a similar ceremony beforehand. Pinecone and Shadow yowled, "Misty Lake! Misty Lake! Misty Lake!" Dark Moon murmured into Misty Lake's ear, "You can fashion yourself a single-word nickname, like Pinecone and Shadow, if you'd like." "Call me Misty then," the newly-named Misty Lake mewed, chuckling softly.
Pulling back from the she-cat, Dark Moon leapt up back to the Star Rock and meowed, looking down on the three kittens, who looked awestruck, "From this day forth, these kittens will be named Falling Feather, Silver Snow, and Quiet Rain, respectfully. We welcome them as new members of OwlClan." Again, Pinecone and Shadow yowled, which Misty joined in as well, "Falling Feather! Silver Snow! Quiet Rain!"
(This moon)
Misty
Misty looked at her three kits, who were busy playing with each other, and stifled a chuckle. The nursery den was quite spacious, really, but it did feel a little lonely sometimes, being the only queen. At least, she mused silently, as she watched the three play-fighting with each other, I have my kits with me, and a new Clan to call home. Dark Moon's black face poked in through the brambles as the OwlClan leader called in a swaggering voice, "Avast, me mateys!" Whooping with delight, Misty's three kits -Feather, Snow, and Rain- scurried over to the leader. Misty rolled her eyes (if cats could, at least) and watched as Rain declared, "I'm Quiet Moon of KitClan! I'm going to win!" He nimbly dodged Dark Moon's gentle pats and went straight for the bigger tom's long tail. Dark Moon let out a fake scream of horror and tumbled forward. Giggling uncontrollably, the three kittens pounced on Dark Moon, with Snow shouting, "I caught him!" Misty bit her lips from trying not to laugh at the four cats as she mewed in her most severe voice possible, "You lot are terrible!" "Mum," Feather protested, "it's fun, I promise! Come join us!" Shaking her head in resignation, Misty joined in the "onslaught" against Dark Moon, and the nursery became full of laughter for the rest of the afternoon.

Dark Moon
Dark Moon let out a hearty laughter as the three kits clambered all over his body. Misty Lake let out a slight huff of disapproval, but did not say anything else. The black-furred leader of OwlClan turned to the kits' mother and meowed, chuckling, "They sure are energetic, Misty." The young queen rolled her eyes and replied, "You let them clamber all over you, Dark Moon." Chuckling, the OwlClan leader turned to the silver-furred queen and mewed, "I'm inviting you and your kits to the sharpclaws' den today, to explain all of our traditions and perhaps swap stories from our pasts." Misty blinked thoughtfully, meowing, "I'm not so sure about swapping stories, but it would be much easier if I could hear of our traditions, especially for the kits." Nodding sagely, Dark Moon meowed, "Come, I'll escort you four there now." Giggling, Feather, Snow, and Rain jumped off of the black-furred tom and marched behind him, with Misty bringing up the rear.
The small group left the nursery and moved toward the sharpclaws' den, where Long Shadow, Fallen Pinecone, and newest member Rising Dawn were standing at the entrance, waiting for Dark Moon's arrival. Dipping their heads in respect, the three sharpclaws disappeared into the den first. Smiling softly, Dark Moon allowed Misty and her three kits to enter the large den. Looking up to the stars, Dark Moon whispered, "StarClan, Tribe of Endless Hunting, ancestors of OwlClan, I turn to you for guidance today - allow my tongue to speak of your sacred traditions and teachings, so that the Clan I remade will not die out without bearing fruit."
<In the sharpclaws' den>
Dark Moon
The black-furred leader of OwlClan cleared his throat and began, "Today we are gathered here to hear of OwlClan's origins, traditions, and unique belief system." Taking a deep breath, Dark Moon cast his orange gaze across the large den before continuing, "OwlClan, the original one, owes its existence to two pre-existing groups of cats - NightClan and Tribe of the Shining Lake. NightClan was known for its caring, kind nature, as no cat within the Clan turned away any well-meaning travelers passing through their territory. The Tribe was too, known for its gentle demeanor. The two groups became steadfast allies throughout their countless moons of coexisting, and each group benefited from the other's help." Silver Snow's small voice piped up from one corner, where the three kits were sitting next to their mother, "Then why make OwlClan?" Misty shushed the small tom as Dark Moon continued, stifling a chuckle, "Well, they did, indeed, have a reason to band together as one and create OwlClan." The black tom's expression grew dark as he meowed, "A ruthless band of rogues numbering more than twenty attacked both NightClan and Tribe of the Shining Lake. Neither group had time to communicate with the other, and they were massacred." Dark Moon's head hung low as he murmured, "Let us pause for a moment of silence, to honor those who went before us." A small moment of silence passed; Dark Moon cleared his throat again, meowing, "Thank you."
The black tom continued, "Although Brimstar, leader of NightClan, had lost her last life at the paws of the rogues' leader, and although Swooping Raven, Tribe-Healer of the Tribe of the Shining Lake, had died, there still remained some hope in the defeated groups. The deputy of NightClan, Owlmoon, suggested to combine the two groups into one, and preserve the history, traditions, and memories of both. The Tribe-Healer-To-Be of the Tribe, Soaring Heron, agreed, and the deal was made. Owlmoon became Owl Moon, first leader of OwlClan, with Soaring Heron becoming OwlClan's first Healer." Taking a deep breath, Dark Moon concluded, "The original OwlClan survived through thick and thin for countless moons too, before it met its terrible demise."
Fallen Pinecone, a lean brown tabby tom, asked carefully, his eyes gleaming from the corner he was sitting in, "What happened, to make OwlClan fall the first time?" Dark Moon replied simply:
"Badgers."
The entire Clan flinched at the mention of the large, lumbering black-and-white creatures. Dark Moon swallowed before meowing firmly, "We will not allow them to destroy this Clan again. No," his voice rose in intensity as he squared his shoulders and flexed his claws, "I will defend each and every one of you with my nine lives." A short moment of silence followed his remarks before Pinecone dipped his head gratefully, meowing, "I'm sure I speak for the whole of OwlClan - we are honored to call ourselves a member of this Clan, and we are honored to call you leader." Pride welled up in Dark Moon's chest as the black tom promised, half to himself and half to his ancestors, "OwlClan will not die. No, not anymore."
Dark Moon swallowed before meowing, "Now that our origins have been explained, I will explain our traditions. As a Tribe-Clan hybrid, OwlClan does not use the 'traditional' way of naming things. For instance, I am Dark Moon. Not Darkstar, not Moonstar, but Dark Moon. Moon is the part of the name all leaders of OwlClan bear, both in honor of Owl Moon, our first leader, and in honor of our ancestors, who come to guide us as the moon rises in the sky. We have two separate parts to our names, in honor of the Tribe that came before us. We call ourselves a Clan, in honor of the Clan that came before us. We live in a system most similar to a Clan, but the way we call the different ranks is more reminiscent of the ancients that came before us, as well as the Tribe of the Shining Lake. Other Clans call the cats who heal 'medicine cats', we call them 'healers'. The ones who hunt, patrol, and fight - which includes the bulk of any Clan - most Clans call them 'warriors'. We OwlClan call them 'sharpclaws'. The ones who train to become sharpclaws, we call them 'softpaws', while other Clans call them 'apprentices'. The rest - leader, deputy, queen, kits, elders - they remain the same." Dark Moon concluded grimly, "Although we are a Clan, we have a distinct identity, one no Clan nor Tribe these days can ever think to copy." Many a cat nodded their heads in understanding, as Dark Moon swallowed nervously.
The Casting of the Stones is next.
Dark Moon meowed solemnly, "The one ceremony that we will continue to honor in our time will be the Casting of the Stones. We use this ceremony when we must make important decisions." He stopped and turned around to leave, calling over his shoulder, "I'll be right back." Before anyone could reply to that, the dark-furred OwlClan leader dashed out, back to the open terrain of their camp. Dark Moon willed his paws to propel him forward, knowing time was of the essence.
<At the lake shore>
Dark Moon
Dark Moon breathlessly thanked his ancestors for lending him speed as he reached the shore. Many pebbles, some large, some small, lay scattered on the water's edge, and the black tom took care in collecting round, smooth pebbles, as much as he could carry -which was to say, not many. He made a mental note to come back with the entirety of his Clan later to bring more pebbles to camp. Turning around again, the black tom headed back, three pebbles clenched tightly in his jaws.
<At the Sharpclaw's den>
Dark Moon
Dark Moon nodded toward his Clanmates in greeting before dropping the three pebble onto the ground. The black tom explained, "I know there's only three pebbles right now, but one day it'll be much more. Anyway," he indicated toward the pebbles with a paw, continuing, "when an important decision must be made, most of the Clan - even kits who are three moons old or older - can participate, if they wish." Taking a pebble, Dark Moon meowed solemnly, "When it is time to cast stones, I will draw a circle on the ground, and split it into two, representing the two different sides." He drew a circle on the ground with his paws and drew a line in the middle to demonstrate, before meowing, "Once that is done, the casting will start." Dark Moon took a pebble and set it on one side, meowing, "Cats will line up in a single line, waiting for their turn. When it is time for a cat to vote, he or she will take a pebble and simply lay it down on the side they believe to be the right decision."
Dark Moon concluded, "Any questions?"
No cat spoke, their eyes trained on the circle and the pebbles. It wasn't until Dark Moon opened his mouth to dismiss the Clan that Quiet Rain, one of Misty's kits, piped up, "We don't have any questions, Dark Moon!" The Clan broke into laughter at the little seal-point she-kit's remark, and Dark Moon called, "Dismissed!"
(This moon)
Pinecone, Dawn
Rising Dawn, who had joined just a moon ago, looked back toward Fallen Pinecone, a more experienced sharpclaw, and meowed, "You know, I never really thought there was more to being a member of OwlClan than being together, til Dark Moon told us otherwise sometime back." Pinecone chuckled, "Yeah, me neither. But ever since that talk, I've been thinking..." The brown tabby tom hesitated, "that maybe he's right. Maybe there are such things as spiritual cats who appear to living cats in times of danger, or when we need guidance." Dawn nodded solemnly, "Yeah. That's what I thought too." Looking ahead toward where OwlClan territory ended, the calico she-cat meowed, turning the conversation over to something else, "Hey, I wonder if there's any other Clans beyond our territory?" Pinecone shrugged, replying, "I mean, Dark Moon says so, but I'm not sure if anyone's close to us?" Shrugging, Dawn remarked, "Those pine trees sure don't seem too welcoming." Pinecone laughed nervously, "I heard from Shadow that in some pine forest not too far from here, there used to live some nasty crows who killed cats who trespassed on their land!" Dawn shuddered, "Please, stop scaring me like that!" The two sharpclaws made good progress through their patrol, marking the boundaries as Dark Moon had instructed, eyes and ears alert for any sign of trouble nearby.

Dark Moon
Dark Moon signaled for his patrol to stop with his tail. He came across the scent of an unfamiliar cat; the black-furred leader of OwlClan challenged loudly, so that any cat in the vicinity could hear him, "Who goes there? This is OwlClan territory - show yourself!" A moment passed before the intruder, a silver torbie, came into view, shivering slightly with fear. Dark Moon's eyes softened at the (assumed) she-cat's ragged appearance, and meowed, "Are you lost?" 'She' replied, nodding, "I was traveling through the area, getting away from the destruction of my old Clan, LambClan, when I came upon your territory, sir. I... I'm sorry, I'll leave..." Glancing at his companions, who nodded, Dark Moon faced the shivering former Clan cat and addressed 'her', "It's okay, I promise. We are but a small Clan who started being a Clan a few moons ago. Would you like to at least stay with us for the day?" The silver torbie nodded vigorously and meowed, "Thank you so much, I would gladly stay with you, if you were willing." Glancing at the two cats beside Dark Moon, 'she' added, "I... forgot to introduce myself, haven't I? My name is Onyxlight, formerly of LambClan." The black-furred OwlClan leader mewed warmly, dipping his head, "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Onyxlight. My name is Dark Moon, leader of OwlClan." Turning to Pinecone, he added, "This is Fallen Pinecone, one of my sharpclaws." The brown tabby tom dipped his head and added, "Nice to meet you, Onyxlight. Please feel free to call me Pinecone." Dark Moon indicated Butterfly with his tail and meowed, "And this is Butterfly's Flight, our first and only softpaw at the moment." The tortoiseshell she-cat dipped her head and replied, "Pleased to meet you. Please call me Butterfly." Dark Moon saw confusion in Onyxlight's eyes at the mention of terms that were obviously foreign to 'her', and suggested, "Follow us and we'll perhaps have time to explain our system later today?" The silver torbie nodded gratefully, meowing, "That would be great, Dark Moon, thank you." The trip back home to camp was filled with Pinecone and Butterfly explaining to the 'she-cat' about OwlClan's territory.
<Back in camp>
Song
Song, a pretty calico she-cat, was busy sorting through herbs when she thought she smelled Onyxlight, one of her old Clanmates back in LambClan. She thought back to her days in LambClan, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. "Get over it," the former LambClan medicine cat told herself angrily, "LambClan is done and over with, you're a healer for OwlClan now." Shaking her head to clear her mind, the calico she-cat decided to take a stroll to calm herself, and stepped out, only to almost run into a longhaired cat. Mumbling, "Sorry," Song made room for the cat in question, only to double-take on a second glance.
"Onyxlight!" Faded Song cried, "it is you!"
Onyxlight, the silver torbie who called himself a tom, was standing in front of her, in the flesh. The former LambClan tom's eyes were wide with shock as he gasped, "Fadedsong!" The two cats embraced each other, as they knew that they were no longer the only survivors of LambClan. The two only separated when Dark Moon, who had been standing behind Onyxlight, coughed politely. Startled, Song and her former Clanmate stood apart awkwardly, before the former apologized, "Sorry, Dark Moon, this is Onyxlight, and he's a former Clanmate of mine." Surprise glimmered in Dark Moon's eyes as Song mentioned Onyxlight's preferred pronouns, but the black tom nodded understandingly as he replied, "Ah... that's why LambClan sounded familiar." A smile on her lips, the calico healer of OwlClan nodded, meowing, "Yes, Dark Moon." Turning to the silver torbie tom, Song explained, "I came upon this Clan myself a moon ago, and look at me, I'm their medicine ca- uhhh healer," she corrected herself hastily, forcing herself to utter the still-unfamiliar word, "now. You can call me Song," she added with a soft chuckle. Onyxlight turned to Dark Moon and pleaded, "Can I... can I stay here forever? As in, can I join as a warrior of your Clan?" The black tom blinked, "Uhhh you mean, as a sharpclaw?" Song explained, as her friend looked at her with confusion, "Sharpclaws are warriors, it's what they call them here." The silver torbie tom nodded and faced Dark Moon again. Once more, he repeated, "May I join OwlClan as a war- sharpclaw?" Dark Moon thought for a moment before replying, nodding, "We are always in need of more members." A wide smile appeared on the OwlClan leader's face as he added, "Welcome to OwlClan."
"I suppose I'd need a new name," the silver torbie tom mused, a bittersweet look in his eyes. Before Song could say something, Dark Moon meowed, "I'm afraid so, Onyxlight, according to OwlClan tradition." "Very well," the tom nodded, "I trust you to give me a new name, Dark Moon." The black tom stared at the former LambClan warrior wide-eyed for a few moments before he seemed to find his voice again. The OwlClan leader nodded and meowed, "Uhhhh... thank you. If you would follow me," he added hastily, "I'll show you to the sharpclaw dens. I'm sure you'll meet everyone in the Clan by the time we welcome you as a sharpclaw properly." Dark Moon disappeared back out of the den, his long tail flicking in farewell. Onyxlight turned and meowed softly, "I'm so glad we both found the same place to call home." "Yes," Song whispered, her tail gently resting on the tom's shoulder, "I missed you." "As I missed you," Onyxlight replied, voice equally soft.
<Sometime later>
Dark Moon
Dark Moon called, leaping up onto the Star Rock, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey meet here, underneath the Star Rock, for a Clan meeting!" The clearing soon was filled with seven curious faces; even Misty Lake was found sitting at the entrance of the nursery. Word seemed to have traveled fast (But then again, Dark Moon mused silently, we only have a total of twelve cats), as everyone was smiling as the silver torbie tom who called himself Onyxlight came to sit near the front of the clearing. Dark Moon smiled down at him before clearing his throat. He then announced, "Today, we celebrate the joining of another member of our Clan!" Cheers came from the cats -Dark Moon swore he could hear Misty's three kits whoop with delight from the nursery-, and the black tom waited patiently for them to quiet down. When the noise did die down, the OwlClan leader meowed, "Step forward please, Onyxlight." The silver torbie tom did as told, and waited anxiously for his new name as the black-furred leader continued, "I, Dark Moon, leader of OwlClan, call upon my ancestors to look down on this cat. He has fled from his old, scattered Clan, and seeks to shelter within ours, as a sign of a new start, and wishes to learn of your noble traditions and code." He looked at the former LambClan warrior as he asked solemnly, "Onyxlight, do you promise to uphold our code and traditions, and to defend and protect the Clan, even at the cost of your life?" A slight shiver went through the tom as Onyxlight answered, "I do." "Then," Dark Moon concluded, "by the power that StarClan and the Tribe of Endless Hunting have vested in me, I hereby give you your new name. From this day forth, you shall be known as Minnow Leap. Our ancestors honor your resilient personality and your willingness to give the Clans a second try, and we welcome you as a full member of OwlClan." A long moment of silence passed as Dark Moon leapt down from the Star Rock to lay his muzzle on the new sharpclaw's shoulder; almost instinctively, Minnow Leap licked his shoulder in return; the small ritual of sorts completed, the cats of OwlClan howled cheerfully, welcoming their newest member with gusto, "Minnow Leap! Minnow Leap! Minnow Leap!"
(This moon)
Dark Moon, Falling Feather, Silver Snow, Quiet Rain, Misty Lake
"Dark Moon, please!" Misty's exasperated voice came from the entrance to the nursery, "I was gone just a few moments to take some much-needed gulps of fresh air, and you're doing what?" Dark Moon chuckled and whispered at Misty's kits, "Quick, your mum's here! Run!" Misty sighed and rolled her eyes (if cats could do that, that is) as Feather, Snow, and Rain let out squeals of excitement as they ran from their pale-furred mother in an attempt to get away from their mother. Misty then meowed, "They are almost ready to become appr- softpaws," she corrected herself, "and you're just playing games with them, Dark Moon." The black tom put his paws up into the air in defeat, but meowed defensively, "They need to enjoy their kithood until the day they do become softpaws though." He frowned, "Becoming a softpaw might be a huge change for them, but I believe they should still have their fun when they can." "But with you?" Misty asked, sighing, "sometimes I wonder if I'm also your mother." Dark Moon gave the light gray queen a lopsided grin as he replied, "Come on, we may have to grow older every day, but that doesn't mean we have to be always grumpy." A merry twinkle in his orange eyes, the OwlClan leader continued, "And besides, your kits are naturals - they'll do fine." "Dark Moon....." Misty began; Dark Moon shook his head and assured her, "They'll be fine. They may not have their father here with the, but I've tried my best to make them feel at home. They will be fine," he emphasized firmly. "And I'm grateful," Misty replied, her blue eyes trailing downward, "but I still worry..." "I know," Dark Moon sighed, "I grew up without my father myself," he added surprising the gray queen, "and mum and her brother -my uncle- raised me so well that I never felt his absence." After a short, awkward pause, the black tom concluded with a small, forced smile, "The Clan is here to make them welcome. Remember that OwlClan is like a huge family," he insisted. Misty nodded, a small smile creeping up on her face, "That's true. A growing family," she added. Dark Moon nodded, watching as Feather, Snow, and Rain played with his tail, "Yes, and I promise to keep them safe. All of them," he added defiantly.

Minnow, Song
Minnow poked his head through the vines covering the entrance of the healer's den, and, upon seeing Song sorting the herbs in her store, the silver tortoiseshell tom purred, "Hey there, Song, good evening!" The tortoiseshell healer turned her gaze to the trans tom and purred back, putting down the fennel she'd been meaning to store away, "Hey there, Minnow, how are you this evening?" Minnow chuckled and admitted, "Still getting used to being called 'Minnow' instead of Onyxlight, I suppose. But I'm getting the hang of being an OwlClan warr- sharpclaw!" he corrected himself hastily, causing Song to laugh. She admitted, "True, still trying to wrap my head around being in OwlClan, and not... you know..." "Shhh," Minnow murmured, gently laying his tail onto the healer's shoulder, "what happened is in the past. We're now members of OwlClan. We should stay positive and make sure this Clan survives for a very long time, long after we are gone." The tortoiseshell healer nodded, determination setting in on her face, "You are absolutely right, Minnow. We should do that, yes." She then glanced at the silver tortoiseshell sharpclaw and asked, frowning slightly, "Aren't you supposed to be on the border patrol?" Minnow blinked blankly at the healer for a moment before realization dawned on him. The trans tom cried, a horrified expression on his face, "Oh no! I completely forgot!" He glanced behind his shoulder as he dashed out, promising, "I'll be back!" Song stared after her old friend, even after he'd disappeared completely out of her view, and sighed. 'Sometimes that cat needs to try his best to remember things," she thought, shaking her head and smiling softly.
(This moon)
Dark Moon
'This is the day,' Dark Moon thought as he leapt up to the Star Rock, 'the three kits of our Clan finally can become softpaws!' Hiding his excitement, the black-furred leader of OwlClan called loudly, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey meet here, under the Star Rock, for a Clan meeting!" The camp became a hub of activity as the members hurried out from their respective dens, eager to hear what news their leader had to share with them. Grinning from ear to ear, no longer able to contain his happiness, Dark Moon announced, "Cats of OwlClan! Today marks a new journey for our three kits, who have reached the age of six moons!" Cats who had been once members of other Clans beamed at the news and glanced over at the three kits sitting next to their mother, all groomed to shining perfection, while those who had not been part of a Clan before cheered simply out of courtesy, their eyes bright with curiosity at this celebration. "Come forward please," the dark-furred leader called; the three kits did as told, staring wide-eyed at the OwlClan leader. Dark Moon smiled warmly at the kits before meowing solemnly, "Until you have proved yourself as a worthy sharpclaw of OwlClan, you shall be known as softpaws." Turning to his trusty deputy, Dark Moon meowed, "Darkened Bark, you are a gift from our ancestors, and you have, ever since your arrival, done everything in your power to do nothing but good for our Clan. You shall mentor young Falling Feather." To the young she-cat, the black tom continued, "Falling Feather, your mentor will be Darkened Bark." Turning back to the shocked deputy, Dark Moon concluded, whiskers twitching with amusement at his expression, "I hope that you pass everything you know down to her." Bark meowed, still in shock, "I will do my best, Dark Moon." Feather purred, eagerly touching noses with her new mentor, "And I'll do my best to follow your instructions!" Smiling from ear to ear, the mentor and softpaw went to sit together. When Dark Moon expectantly turned to Silver Snow, the young gray tabby tom meowed quickly, "Dark Moon, I'd like to become Faded Song's assistant." As everyone in the camp stared at Snow as the tom explained, "I've watched her do her duties in the healer's den, and I want to help. I want to save lives," he emphasized. Dark Moon nodded appreciatively, meowing, "Once upon a time, the healer was the highest authority, Tribe-Healer of the Tribe of the Shining Lake. You have made an extreme difficult decision in your life, but I am sure that you will make a great healer." Turning to Song, who was smiling knowingly, Dark Moon asked, "Faded Song, will you accept Silver Snow as your softpaw?" The calico she-cat smiled and meowed, "I do." To the gray tabby tom she assured him, "I'll be with you every pawstep of the way, until you become a full-fledged healer." Snow gave his new mentor a grin before the two cats went to sit where Song had been, right in front of the entrance to her den. Once the crowd settled down, Dark Moon smiled down at the last kit, Quiet Rain, and meowed, "Long Shadow will be your mentor." Turning to the longhaired black she-cat, who looked shocked, the dark-furred OwlClan leader continued, "Long Shadow, you will mentor young Quiet Rain. I know that you are an excellent sharpclaw; I hope that you pass all you know down to her." Shadow nodded firmly and meowed, determination in her eyes, "I will do my hardest." When all the softpaws had been named, the crowd went wild, calling out their names loudly, "Feather, Snow, Rain! Feather, Snow, Rain!"
