"Frigidstar!" Tawnyspark whispered frantically as she rushed into the leader's den. "Oh Frigidstar, they're planning something awful. You need to get out of here." The silver molly sighed, "Tawnyspark... no. I am so, so tired of hiding. I won't do it anymore." "But you can save yourself," the younger pleaded. "I'll help you! Please, Frigidstar. Doesn't the peaceful life of a loner sound nice?" Shaking her head, the leader mewed more firmly, "I'm not going anywhere because I'm not welcome anywhere - that's how it's always been and always will be." Tawnyspark couldn't find any words. Why wouldn't she just try? What harm was there in trying? "There has to be someplace," she insisted. "No. Trust me," Frigidstar muttered. "The only other home I ever had would never, not in a thousand moons, let me return." The ginger's ears perked up. "What other home?" A small smile appeared across the silver tabby's face now that she had distracted Tawnyspark from the events unfolding. "You didn't know? I was a part of a rogue group. Ah, how I miss it. My father was the one in charge, so I got special privileges and things. It was a nice life, really, despite what Clan cats typically make rogue groups out to be." "If it was so great, why did you leave?" Frigidstar allowed herself a small sigh as she explained, "I didn't want to leave - I was forced to. But I don't want to get into that...." "Sorry," Tawnyspark mewed, turning her gaze to the ground. "You're fine, sweetheart. It's just - " She stopped abruptly, her eyes intent on something outside the den, her muscles tensing. Tawnyspark turned around and found her Clan-mates gathering in the center of the camp. The fur along her spine rose and she turned to her former mentor with a hopeless glint in her eyes. "Frigidstar..." she whimpered. "You need to go. They can't find you in here." "But Frigidstar, I won't let you just die!" "Tawnyspark, listen to me," the silver tabby's pale green eyes stared into the amber ones across from her, pleading. "Just let it happen. This is StarClan's will, I know it. I have trained you to be a great leader one day, and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that that you will be. There's nothing left for me to do here. I've lived my life to its fullest, Tawny. Go live yours. Don't worry about me, alright?" She smiled, a tear sliding down her cheek. Tawnyspark's throat closed up and the tears brimming in her own eyes began to fall. A sob choked its way out of her as Frigidstar leaned forward to touch her nose to the younger molly's, just as she had done eight moons before when Tawnyspark was made her apprentice.
I just don't get it, Tawnyspark signed stiffly. There's nothing stopping us from leaving this place. Yeah, there's a few camp guards and stuff, but nothing we can't get past. There's nothing good here, it's all evil. Don't you see it, too? Blizzardstone didn't answer for a moment. They had been over this so many times now that she wondered how she still had the patience for it. The ginger could be so stubborn sometimes, and kept insisting that someway, somehow they could leave the rogues, but every time she brought it up, Blizzardstone reminded her of how vicious these rogues could be. StarClan, they slaughtered each other for entertainment. The Clan cats shouldn't put it past them to track down runaways. Tawny, stop it. You already know the answer. I'm not going to do this with you anymore. We're not going anywhere. We can't. Hurt evident in her amber eyes, Tawnyspark stared at her friend, searching for a retort to throw at her. I'm going to find a way, just you watch. If you don't want to come with me, then fine. I don't care. Flustered, she abruptly jumped to her paws and left the tree that they had been lying under. "There has to be some way..." she muttered under her breath. Silently she crept around to the other side of the mass of boulders that was Shadow's den, heading for the line of trees that marked the edge of the camp. She stopped and hid behind a bush when she noticed an approaching guard, making their rounds. She held her breath and cursed her heartbeat for being so loud as they passed, not taking notice of her, thank StarClan. The ginger remained there by the bush for a while longer, carefully studying the timing of when each of the four guards would pass by this spot. Should she make a mad dash for it now? Or would it be better to wait until it was dark? No, the guards would probably be on higher alert during the night.... As a guard once again passed, she had a bit more time to think. Now that the opportunity was actually right in front of her, she wasn't sure if she really wanted to do this on her own.... She had never been all alone before - and didn't want to admit it, but the idea was scary. Finally the guard was just out of sight - she needed to make up her mind now. Heart pounding violently against her ribcage, Tawnyspark took one deep breath, eyes glancing to her left and right to ensure that no one was coming, and then she ran. She breathed a curse when the bush rustled as she darted around it and when she stumbled on a loose stone. "StarClan, please," she begged in a whisper, hurrying to her paws. Her legs were so shaky, and she almost tripped again. She was so close, so close to the trees. Just a couple monster-lengths left. Almost there. Then she heard a pounding besides her own heartbeat - paws on the ground behind her, chasing. Only a few seconds later, the noise stopped and she felt claws sinking into her shoulders. With a yowl she fell, her pursuer pinning her to the ground. She couldn't move at all, they were far too strong for her. "That was pretty foolish of you," Shadow chuckled. "You won't want to do that again. I'm letting you off this time, but please, for your sake, trust me when I say that next time there will most certainly be consequences." "Just kill me now," the young molly sputtered, on the verge of sobbing. "I don't want anything to do with you rogues. I've had enough - I can't live like this. Please. Just do it." Then Shadow outright laughed. "Oh, you're a funny one. What makes you think I would kill you? - and just do away with everything I've planned? Didn't your parents explain things to you?" Tawnyspark's voice grew hoarser, "I don't want any part of your fox-hearted plan, you hear me? I'm not going to -" She let out a shrill yelp as the tom sank his long claws deeper into her flesh. "Can I ask you something?" his voice became grave now, a stark contrast to what it was before, as he leaned down so that his hot breath fanned Tawnyspark's ear, making her shiver. "You don't happen to know anyone by the name of Frigid, do you?" Tawnyspark's eyes had been squeezed shut but now they were wide open. Her heartbeat practically stopped. "Wh-what..?" How in StarClan's name did he know about Frigidstar? Shadow sheathed his claws and took a couple steps back to allow her to sit up. "I asked if you know a molly named Frigid. Silver tabby, pale green eyes, quite the temper -" "Yes," the ginger croaked, "y-yes, I knew her. But... I-I don't understand - why are you asking me this..?" Shadow gave a little smile. "When we found you and your family and the fighting ensued - remember? - I couldn't help but notice the certain techniques you employed when you fought. They were practically the same as Frigid's - and that can't be just coincidence because, you see, she was awfully stubborn - as you probably know - and didn't like being told how to do things, so she invented her own unique way of fighting. There was no doubt in my mind that she had trained you -" "B-But why is that so significant? How do you know her?" Tawnyspark cut in. "I'm her father." The ginger choked on her own air in shock, earning a chuckle from Shadow. "Well, there's certainly lots of things I should explain to you - why she left, for one. But -" he smiled, "- only if you swear to me you won't attempt to leave again." Tawnyspark was at a loss for words. Curiosity was eating her up, she was just itching to know more about Frigidstar before she became a Clan cat, more about this rogue group she had called her own, the life that she said she missed so much. But how could she miss something like this? Was it that things were better before she left? "Tawnyspark?" Shadow pressed. The molly gulped, frantically trying to decide what to do. Maybe her family was right. Maybe she should just give in. Maybe this was StarClan's will.... She took a deep breath. "Tell me everything."
"Hey," Coalstorm mewed, padding toward where Tawnystar was lying at the edge of the camp, "you alright?" "Yeah, yeah," the young leader was quick to answer. "Just... thinking." The deputy lay down beside her, gazing out the camp entrance and taking in the beauty of the new-leaf colors. "About what?" "Eh, nothing really. Oh, the trees really are beautiful aren't they? I love new-leaf," she sighed quietly, fidgeting with her paws. Coalstorm eyed the movement before turning toward the molly. "What? Something wrong?" "I could ask you the same thing. You seem troubled.... You can tell me anything, you know." Tawnystar laughed lightly, "I would hope so, you're my deputy." She hesitated before giving in, "Alright, alright.... Yeah, I'm, uh... I just can't help but think about when we lived with the rogues, everything we went through.... It plagues me - i-it's in my dreams every night, and sometimes out of the blue I can just hear his voice, and -" she shuddered, closing her eyes. She took a couple breaths before continuing, "I just can't seem to escape it. I don't know what to do...." Tawnystar trailed off as her throat began to tighten up. No, no, no, she can't cry right now, no way, she needs to be a strong leader, her Clan-mates can't see her like this - "Hey - hey," Coalstorm nudged her gently. "It's just me. Don't be afraid to cry. Everyone needs to get it out every now and then. It's not healthy to keep things inside all the time. You tend to do that, you know." The molly took a deep breath and quickly wiped the wetness from her cheeks. "Thanks, Coalstorm," she mewed, briefly touching her nose to his cheek. "Uh, hey, Tawny -" Lightfrost cut in suddenly, padding toward them from the warriors' den, but abruptly stopping in his tracks, "- oh, um, am I, uh, interrupting something..?" He glanced between the two, a small smile growing on his face. "Oh, n-no, no, no! You're fine! What do you need?" Tawnystar jumped to her paws and hurried toward her brother, her ears turning red. By now, Lightfrost had a huge grin on his face. "Are you sure? That looked like something to me - hey!" he exclaimed when she cuffed him on the ear.
