vivere! wrote:although the ebony pinions have identified under many names in the past, they have been flourishing for thousands of years and may be one of the oldest packs around. they’ve swelled to the size of hundreds in times of blessing; they’ve dwindled under sickness and cruel reign to half a dozen. but through every high and low, the pinions have always looked to their gods, devotedly worshipping them and never once straying from their paths. these gods and goddesses were the driving forces in their lives, judging their futures and past alike watchfully and with an unbiased eye. however, one day not so long ago, a new leader came to power— a great, hulking brute of a bullmastiff— who did not believe in the deities who had been there for them through everything. he was arrogant, and began plans to shake the religion of the pinions to its very core and reform their firm beliefs. he wanted to be their god. he wanted to be all-powerful in their eyes… then his new position would be secure. and for awhile, it worked. over time, he managed to convince the pinions that he was the high goddess incarnate, and life was good for him as the pack slowly lost its good morals and family heritage that ran deep to turn and submit to his iron paw. the gods had had enough before long, and sent a mighty storm to strike the unbelieving filth with lightning so powerful it felled trees for half a mile around— because he did not believe, he needed only to be killed once. he was not worthy of a leader’s nine lives. but once they had taken care of the root of the problem, their rage spread to the other members of the pack, and they were destroyed for their unfaithfulness. only one dog was blessed with life. one dog was to rebuild the pack, tearing out the ugly black roots and planting new, green ones. the gods gave him a purpose, and he set off to once more bring the ebony pinions to power. their wings would spread once again.
the ebony pinions keep to themselves. it’s less of a rule and more of a fact of life. they don’t like to share any information that could be used against their kennel— not the number of candids within it, not in what places they reside, not who they hold dear and who they seek to destroy. all of it is kept under lock and key. as such, the pinions are known to be generally quiet and polite yet unsociable at meetings, speaking only when spoken to and even then saying little. however, they do take pride in their heritage and will happily relay stories to those younger than them or to any other dogs willing to listen with flawless accuracy, passed down through the years via eloquent words repeated over and over again. they are curious about the world and definitively well-meaning behind their might— just protective and somewhat gruff on the surface. it’s rare to find a candid from the pinions who has no interest in becoming a better dog. nevertheless, the pack is not a force to be reckoned with, and it doesn’t need any reputations to prove that. mastiffs bristling with muscle, dogs with heads as thick and square as their bodies, exotic young candids with husky accents and bloodlust in their eyes, sleek hounds with dark, brooding eyes… they stick together and murmur among themselves, prepared for any fight that may be hurled their way. they are not a tightly knit family, nor are they a vicious military unit. they are somewhere in between, caring for each other when needed but unafraid to exile and kill to keep order in the pack. however, due to being extremely religious, unbelievers will often be slaughtered as soon as they are discovered. no one within their pack seeks to identify with such filth. all in all, the ebony pinions are merely benevolent giants with firm roots in their past and gods, prepared to fight need be it but preferring to stand together on their own with independence.
THE WEATHER
top notch wrote:nature/reputationthe nature of the eldritch society is a rather peculiar one; these dogs are, in a word, strange. they are mysterious and known for keeping to themselves, and oftentimes tend to avoid conflict with other kennels altogether. they're not very talkative - in fact, most are selectively mute around strangers. they are a peaceful society with odd behaviors being the norm...
at least, that's how it is to outsiders.
beliefsthe eldritch society worships a multitude of deities - these are gods and goddesses they themselves have found. they belong to no specific religion, but the natures of these deities are enough to send chills down the spines of even the strongest fighters.
alterra, otherwise known as the all-mother, is the high goddess of creation, protection, health, and destruction. she comes in the form of a mastiff with plantlife sprouting from her eyes and mouth. everything she touches is blessed with life - however, she is a goddess who is to be feared, as while she can grant life, she can easily take it away. the all-mother is temperamental, and has been known to send natural disasters if she is displeased even for a split second.
dytholisus is the god of the plague. he takes on the form of a severely malnourished terrier with ticks and fleas all over his pelt; he is able to take on the secondary form of thousands of fleas and ticks, and can use these to curse those who have displeased the all-mother or to travel quickly.
gartena is the goddess of the hunt. she takes the form of a gluttonous greyhound with an enlarged jaw, similar to that of a snake, and dozens of rows of sharp teeth. she is ever-hungry, and will devour those who have displeased the all-mother.
etheria is the goddess of fire and the underworld, and takes on the form of a wolf with a fiery mane. she is a wrathful goddess, and can banish those who displease the all-mother to a life of torment and suffering.
holidays/ceremoniesfestival: held once a year (12 moons); is usually to celebrate the graduations of no names. held to honor the gods and give thanks for strong pack members, as well as pray for safety for years to come.
moonfaire: a bi-monthly celebration in which the kennel sacrifices prey to the gods in hopes to appease them.
carnival: a bi-yearly celebration in which dogs fight for the gods' amusement. one of the more disturbing celebrations, since sometimes dogs from the society will go in "tourney packs" to find loners to partake in their games. (note: dogs who've not dedicated their lives to the society, if they partake in carnival, are normally killed to please the gods.)
ranksthe ranks are different than that of an ordinary kennel:
godfather- the leader of the kennel. despite what the name might imply, this rank can be filled by either a fae or a brute, though they will always be referred to as the godfather. they are the head of the kennel, and are in charge of maintaining a good disposition with neighboring kennels. tends to be 20+ moons.
council- a group of five dogs that act as the godfather's personal advisors. they also are the godfather's personal bodyguards, and are in charge of maintaining the peace within the kennel. tend to be 25+ moons.
grand priest- the omen-seer, this dog is chosen by the all-mother to relay her teachings to the kennel. this dog is highly respected, and is the only rank who may veto the votes of those above it. tends to be 35+ moons.
shamans- three dogs that act as the healers of the kennel. they are experienced in herbology and treating diseases. tend to be 25+ moons.
bloodrunners- dogs that act as the scouts of the kennel. they typically are the fastest runners and are trained in recon. tend to be 12+ moons.
general- the leader of the combatants, this dog is in charge of the military aspect of the kennel. is in frequent contact with the godfather and the council. tends to be 25+ moons.
combatants- the warriors; they are on the front lines, dogs who are battle-ready and hardened for war. tend to be 12+ moons.
hunters- these dogs are in charge of hunting and maintaining the prey supply for the kennel, as well as handling the ever-increasing predator threat. tend to be 12+ moons.
no names- the tenderpaws of the kennel; they are trained to either be shamans, bloodrunners, combatants, or hunters. tend to be 6-12 moons.
lesser mothers- while the name may imply something rude, this rank is highly respected. they are the mothers and mothers-to-be; those who bring the future of the kennel. tend to be 20+ moons.
pups- the future of the kennel, the pups are kept by their mothers' side until they are six moons; then they become no names.
elders- retired combatants/dogs who've served their time in the kennel. they are the teachers of the kennel. tend to be 100+ moons.
territorythe kennel's territory rests in the very heart of graveshire hollows - a thick, winding forest with ominous warnings and scents all over it. they tend to keep their territory by an old, abandoned factory found deep in the hollows. the prey typically found here are: vole, rabbit, hare, small/large birds, deer/elk, and hogs/wild boar.
personalities/breedsthe society tends to have larger dogs, but there are no set breeds. most dogs taken in are loners or those who've been rejected by other kennels. of course, occasionally dogs seek out the society in hopes of joining their ranks, but this is uncommon.
if it's possible, i'd love to request nightwolf950 as my mod? qwq
