I've sold mine for around 300-500 gems depending on the tert colors.

It also depends on the double colour - for something more desirable, like Obsidian, you can get tens of thousands of gems. But for colours that are under appreciated, like Spring or something, you'll find that there's not as much demand.
I would look on the AH to see if there are any doubles the same colour as yours, and go from there? You can also post in the FR forums and ask the Gen1 Hoarders group?

What's this X and Y business I keep seeing and how can I tell which my dragon is? I'm really curious about it and guess it's to do with their traits and colours..?

Those are the colors for the dragon we're talking about! For example an XXX dragon would have a white primary, a white secondary, and a white tertiary color. This dragon here is a good example!



Y designates a secondary color, so a XYY dragon would have a steel primary, a sky secondary, and a sky tertiary. This dragon here is a good example!



An XYZ dragon would be one with three different colors, like this one:
