Silky was out. She wasn’t sure why she was out, but she was. She limped along the hallways with an air of importance, looking down her nose at all the other pets she saw. After all, she was a purebred show-cat and they weren’t. Of course, cats are naturally above all other animals, plus she was out of her cage and they weren’t. She padded through an enormous maze of corridors. She began to see more dogs in their cages than she was used to, as where she was from there were mostly cats in cages. Then she smelt the outside. Smelt fresh air, heard the birds in the trees, saw fresh green grass. She sped up her limping pace, towards the door that led to this strange half-freedom. Then she was outside.
Oh, the glorious outdoors! There was a fence around the area, but Silky didn’t really care. She was outside. Outside. Then she realised where she was. Somehow, she’d managed to find her way to the dog garden. Upon realising this, she puffed up all of her fur and held her tail higher than normal. Silky was not afraid of dogs. She just hated them. Her face was contorted with rage that you might think was impossible to contain in such a small, shy little cat. Despite the fact that her posture and body language were meant to scare off her enemy, the sight was not particularly intimidating. She began hissing and spitting, sending out her challenge to all of the dogs, even though some were three or four times her size.

Speaking of distractions. . . Ruby saw a cat, standing in the yard. She bounded over happily. "Hi! I'm Ruby! What's your name?" she asked excitedly. She had never made friends with a cat before, and she was hoping this one would be friendly.

Silky stopped her torrent of hissing at the other dogs, lowering her tail slightly and swishing it suspiciously. She was used to dogs barking at her, chasing her, trying to kill her; that was why she learned to hate dogs. Learned to take care of herself. But here was a dog, called Ruby, who wasn’t trying to kill her. Ruby was trying to
make friends with her. This defied all of Silky’s knowledge of dogs, and she didn’t like it. “I’m Silky,” she replied, her voice soft and sweet like honey, but with an underlying hint of suspicion. “I’ve never met a dog that’s not going to chase me or anything. What makes you more trustworthy than the others?” Silky unsheathed her claws slightly, ready to attack at the slightest hint of aggression. But Ruby just seemed excitable, and Silky was fairly sure she wouldn’t have to go on the offensive.

Ruby tilted her head. "Do you want me to chase you?" she asked, slightly confused. Although she'd never met a cat before, she was pretty sure that they didn't like being chased. "I've never met a cat before. My owner said she was allergic to them. And I only chase things I'm supposed to chase. So no squirrels or cars, or cats." Ruby said.

Silky relaxed, completely laying down her fur and sheathing her claws. She sat down, sighing. “You’re not like any dog I’ve ever met,” Silky said, “and I’m glad of it. Most dogs that I’ve met have been horrible to me. That’s why I don’t generally like them, but you’re different. You’re nice.” Silky then began to purr, a deep, rumbling sound, not dissimilar to he rumbling of an engine. She then laughed a little. “What sort of things
do you chase?” Silky asked.

"Well, mainly my ball. My owner liked to throw it down a long hallway, and I'd chase it, and I'd bring it back. Sometimes I chase my tail. . . I know it's stupid, but it's so distracting." Ruby looked behind herself at her tail, which was wagging happily.

Silky’s purring intensified. “I used to play with my tail sometimes,” she replied. “It was one of the best toys I ever had. I could never catch it, though, and it’s probably best that I couldn’t!” Silky laughed. She then stood up and walked over to Ruby, rubbing her head on Ruby’s chest and curling her tail around the dog. She’d never done that to anything before, not even her previous owners, as none of them had wanted her. But Ruby wanted her. Ruby was the best friend Silky had ever had, even though they’d only been talking for five minutes or so. Silky mentioned that to Ruby, worried if Ruby would judge her for not having many friends.

Ruby's tail began wagging harder. "Yay! I've never had a really good friend before. All the dogs in my neighborhood thought I was too nice for not chasing the mailman." She was glad that Silky liked her, and she didn't mind that she didn't have many friends. After all, it was hard to find real friends in this world.

Silky was glad that Ruby was alright with her not having many friends, and she laughed very hard at Ruby’s story about the mailman. “You seem like you had a really nice life before you came here,” Silky commented. “Why did your owner take you here, if life was so good before?” Silky sat next to Ruby, happy with the friendship and good conversation that she offered.
