Most people say cosplay whoever you want and who cares about skin tone.

I agree, cosplay is for anyone, regardless of colour and gender. But I do understand, I have a vauge idea of wanting to cosplay Shuri from Black Panther one dag but I am very white

This is one time I really understand the meaning of “same”.

Shuri is SO FREAKIN AMAZING and I wanna be her so bad—but given my skin tone it’d just look... weird. (Think “vampire” and you’ve got me, basically.) Doing the makeup thing doesn’t really seem... okay?? I don’t quite understand why, but people seem to get mad about it, so there’s probably some social implication or cue that’s flying right over my head.

And wearing the costume anyway doesn’t seem right either? First off, it wouldn’t look right, and... I think... that might not be okay either...? I know people get angry about “cultural appropriation”, which I get, I really do, I know that’s bad—but does cosplaying Shuri count as that? I know she’s really important because of onscreen representation and stuff... does that mean it’d seem like I was trying to steal her/the idea of her away?

Shuri is brave, and snarky, and crazy smart, and she makes vine references for cryin’ out loud! She’s this really, REALLY cool character, and I want to show I admire her, but am I even allowed to do it that way? Is cosplaying Black Panther characters off-limits for me?

I get wanting to cosplay her, but I'm just gonna have her funko pop on my desk instead, I want to cosplay her, but I'm white as anything and that would be ethically a bit ???? at least to me (I'm starting to sound like Chidi from the good place)
I think the only one that could get away with is the black panther suit itself with the mask and everything.

Here is my take on cosplaying characters that don’t match your skin type, the cosplay community is actually pretty encouraging of people who want to be their favorite characters. The only time there is backlash is when someone tries to actually change their skin tone whether it is to lighten or darken. That is definitely something that should not be done. Cosplaying is about showing love for the characters and if done respectfully it will be just fine.


I got my Scarlet Witch cosplay in yesterday! I tried it on and I feel amazing in it! Super excited to style the wig and figure out the makeup!

I just got my Wicked Lady cosplay together! It's not her traditional outfit but I think it represents her pretty well and I feel AMAZING in it! All I'm missing is a Luna P bag and she's exactly what I pictured! I'm working on her original dress but it won't be done for a bit.

This is the first widely known anime character I've cosplayed and I think a lot more people will know who I am than usual lol

I plan on cosplaying a character with numerous intricate tattoos. My original plan was to just paint them on myself using henna, but after giving the official concept art a glance I realized that that's... Not gonna happen, just because I wouldn't be able to reach properly to paint it. Do you guys think a tattoo artist would be willing to do a temp tattoo with henna or should I start prepping my family members for the job? Link to the concept art, because dang that's a big image
I mean I plan on actually getting those tattoos at some point in life but that's not exactly relevant to my cosplay plan for a year or two from now

you could also draw them on some arm stockings with a sharpie marker. put them on someone else and draw it on, then you can just wear it.
