A small town that was built in the 18's was now abandoned and
overgrown with vines of leafs and small animal life. Slowly, a path
started to come that lead to a small broken down building that had
a dome made out of glass that was broken down. Wild pups and
dogs started to run around and formed a pack called 'the overgrown'.

All shape and sizes, doesn't matter if you are small and weak or
big and strong, this pack will accept anyone. From the leader all
ways been the breed of a German Shepherd or even a Bernese
Mountain Dog. This year it's changing, It doesn't matter if the link
will change. Blood and bones have been around this pack but
making it rebuild is not easy.

A proud Bernese Mountain Dogwill over look this pack as it will
grown over and under his paws.

before
leo woke with a start, eyes blinking open to peer through the darkness. the alleyway was rank from recent rain, and his fur seemed to stick to his skin, but the shelter of the dumpster was the best he could find. he thought that he would be left alone, by both humans and dogs alike. after his owner was taken away in the white truck and other humans left leo on the side of the road, his life consisted of little more than dodging other dogs and trying to survive to the next day.
in the dark of the alley, he could just make out the frame of a bulky and muscled dog who sniffed at one of the bags. fear that he was being pursued by a stronger dog made leo slink out from his hiding place, catching the way the dog rose his head at the movement. before he could be attacked, leo flashed his teeth. "who are you and what do you want?"
surprisingly, the dog took a step back from the serbian hound. the protective shadows seemed to fall away, revealing the stranger as a muscle rottweiler, who bore the marks of fighting in his past. still, with his ears back and body lowered towards the ground, the stranger didn't appear as much of a menacing force. "my name's minnow," the rottweiler said without hesitation. "i didn't know anyone was here. i was just looking for a place to sleep." then, leo realized that the dog's ribs showed through his short fur. despite his muscles, it was clear that the dog was close to starving.
tipping his head to one side, leo flicked his eyes back to the damp trash bags, then back to minnow. "come on," he said at last, tossing his head back towards the dumpster. for a moment minnow looked confused, but he took a tentative step forward. "anything is better than sleeping on those wet bags, there's space by the dumpster," he added, then paused before continuing, "are you hungry?"
minnow's features twisted slightly before he nodded once, and leo returned the gesture. when the pair settled in, minnow eating the scraps leo offered him from his own meal earlier, the larger rottweiler paused, blinking at leo. "you're not like the other dogs around here," he commented, and leo couldn't help but lift his head from his paws to look at his companion.
"what do you mean?" he asked.
"no one else i've met seems like the type to help. but you - you didn't even hesitate," minnow answered after a moment's consideration, and leo glanced away from the evident compliment.
"i wouldn't say that i didn't hesitate. but i won't let another dog starve on my watch," leo replied casually, letting his head fall back to his paws.
minnow, meanwhile, returned to his meal, looking back only when leo turned once more. "you're not around here, are ya?" leo asked, unsurprised when minnow shook his head.
the small meal had disappeared, and minnow felt content for the first time since he could remember. "no, i came from a group of dogs far away from here," he answered, eyes glazed over as he recalled his former friends and family. with that, under the cover of night, he told leo about his former pack, and how the group disbanded. he told about the death of his brother, and his own anger, and his eventual sadness when the group broke apart. "i'm not sure what happened to the others," he continued, "i just kept walking, trying to put as much distance between myself and them as possible." his shoulders rose and fell in a heavy shrug, and minnow scuffed a paw against the cold pavement. "i guess i just miss the company. i don't like being alone," he finished.
at that, leo glanced minnow over again. though they only just met, there was something about minnow's dark eyes and sincerity in his voice that made him trust him. surely this dog was not like so many others he crossed paths with. this was a dog he could trust with his back, and he felt a sense of kinship with minnow. by the time dawn broke and leo told of his time as a house pet, the pair slowly fell closer and closer towards the edge of sleep, and leo spoke up one last time. "what do you think, minnow? should we stick together? you and me - we could make a good team."
minnow's eyes opened at the words, and he perked up immediately. "do you mean it?" he asked, suddenly wide awake, and he turned to leo, who continue to lie with his eyes closed. he took a flick of leo's ear as agreement, and laughed softly, in awe by his new friend. "well - yeah - alright. that could work." together, the pair slept, sealing the deal of their friendship.
together, for the next weeks, they progressed as a pair, scavenging the alleys together and staying under the radar, not drawing any attention to themselves and decidedly keeping to their duo. that is, until leo woke up one morning and told minnow about a dream he had, calling him into the woods to find a group of strange dogs who would become, as he'd been told, their new family. thought minnow was reluctant at first, hesitant after watching his past group fall apart and completely content with leo, he assented when it seemed leo would go on his own in time.
thus, the pair headed out to find the dogs named alcides and perseus, who led the group of dogs.

now
andromache crept forward on the ground, carefully placing her paws one in front of the other. the scent of duck filled her senses, mixed with the damp grass from an early morning rain and the dew that graced the land each morning. the duck remained in her sight, and she held her last strands of self-control from jumping at it too early. lately, the pack had remained well-fed thanks to andromache and her fellow hunters under proteus. together, they had become something of a unit, filling in for one another's downfalls with their individual strengthens. hermes was faster than the rest of them, and had high endurance for sprints after hares and deer, though he lacked the wits to plan a careful hunt. proteus, meanwhile, would plan their hunts, though he was slower than andromache and hermes alike. and, andromache herself thought that she fell in the middle - she was faster than proteus, though not as smart, but smarter than hermes, though not as fast.
through the grass, andromache could just make out proteus beginning to poke through in case the duck spotted andromache and tried to escape. hermes was at andromache's heels, ready to run if andromache missed her mark.
at last, andromache watched when proteus nodded his head once in a signal, and she bunched her muscles to dart forward and sink her teeth into the duck. however, at the last minute, a twig snapped and the duck fluttered, making andromache hesitate a minute too long. proteus disappeared from her sight and hermes rushed forward, ending in a scattering of feathers until he held the catch between his jaws.
though the prey had been caught, andromache stepped forward from the grass, ears pushed back in frustration. instead, she found herself facing a serbian hound, who eyed her in turn.
"andromache, who's this you found?" proteus asked, his legs and belly wet from crossing the narrow stream, and several stray strands of grass caught in his fur.
andromache leaned forward to sniff at the hound. "hermes caught the duck. looks like i found a city-dweller," she answered, noting the way his fur smelt of dirt with undertones of trash and alleyways from athens. proteus huffed out a laugh, and andromache leveled her eyes at the stranger. "you're a long way from home, stranger," she said, then tipped her head back to where hermes stood with his catch. "you nearly scared off our prey, too. good thing hermes' fast, or else he would have pouted about it all the way back home." from the side, she heard hermes' huff of complaint, though she didn't take her gaze from the hound.
"my apologies," the hound replied with a dip of his head. "but i was told to come find the dogs living in the woods. are any of you perseus?" he asked, and andromache caught proteus' frame stiffen at her side.
with hermes boasting a mouthful of prey, and gauging proteus' expression, andromache took it upon herself to shake her head. ever since she found proteus and hermes while she was with cadmus and perseus, it seemed clear that the high priest and head hunter were smitten for one another, though they each acted strangely as of late. "no. who are you and who sent you?" she asked, tipping her head to assess the hound further. his lean muscles suggested that he was quick, and would probably be a decent hunter if he watched his step.
"my name is leo, and i was sent by the goddess artemis to find perseus and alcides," the hound, leo, stated. it was only when he looked off into the distance that proteus whipped around and nodded to leo.
"who's out there?" proteus demanded, and the hair on the back of andromache's neck rose in anticipation when leo sniffed the air. "is this an ambush?"
"no, of course not," leo answered, eyes suddenly round. "my friend and i have been traveling together for some time, and now we've come to find the dogs in the woods - you." he bowed his head once more before calling out to his friend. "minnow! i found them!"
a moment later, a muscled rottweiler emerged from the trees, eyes round and ears back. on either side of andromache, hermes and proteus took up defensive stances at the sight of the second stranger, and proteus narrowed his eyes. "any other friends we should know about?" he asked, letting out a huff of air when the strangers shook their heads. he then looked to andromache and hermes, tipping his head towards the thicket of the woods. "andromache, go find perseus. he should be around here somewhere - he likes to look for herbs this way. bring him here and we'll see if their story checks out."
andromache raised her eyes in surprise, not expecting the head hunter's tone, but quickly assented, turning and racing off in the pointed direction to find the high priest. in the past, the group had been accepting of strangers, and proteus was rarely so on edge and irritable. whatever it was, andromache decided to get to the bottom of it to return the entire group to their peace. surely alcides would not want his friend to make them into an inclusive group when the premise was that the gods accepted them all. especially after watching proteus bring dogs back in the past.
soon enough, andromache found perseus' scent and followed it to where he picked berries from a bush, his eyes wide with surprise when she came to a halt in front of him, panting from her run. "andromache?" he questioned, and she ducked her head to take in long gulps of air.
"our patrol found a pair of dogs and one of them said he was sent by the gods to find you. proteus told me to find you," she explained in a rush, not missing the way perseus' shoulders tensed at proteus' name.
she, however, had no time to question the movement before perseus shook out his long white fur and nodded to her. "lead the way," he directed before picking up his berries to follow her.
the run back was slower, because andromache was tired from a day of hunting and the initial sprint, and because perseus had a mouthful of berries and was not as fast as the hunter, but they reached the stream soon enough. there, proteus was speaking to the hound, leo, and minnow sat in the sand by the bank, watching hermes pace, likely looking for any fish.
proteus didn't immediately turn at the arrival, even when andromache called out to him, but he offered a glance when leo looked to perseus, who strode forward. andromache watched from a distance, eyeing the way proteus and perseus both stiffened in one another's company while they spoke to leo. at last, the trio seemed to come to some conclusion, and andromache and minnow alike stood when perseus turned to them and walked forward to minnow. a cursory glance showed proteus speaking to leo, this time more relaxed, and leo nodded at whatever proteus said - andromache assumed it to be an apology.
"the gods are good to send you here," perseus said to minnow when andromache looked back to them.
minnow, however, ducked his head. "the gods sent leo, not me -" he began, but didn't argue when perseus broke in.
"you were with leo, minnow. they sent you both." his smile seemed to ease minnow, and the rottweiler offered a small smile of his own. "the gods told me to expect you, though i didn't think you would be back so soon. however, they did tell me your new names," he continued when proteus brought leo forward and hermes returned from the water, paws and muzzle wet.
"new names?" minnow asked, looking at perseus with a mixture of interest and skepticism. leo, on the other hand, appeared only intrigued.
"indeed," perseus answered with a nod, "the gods rename us when we join the group. that way we are better connected to them and their will." minnow still appeared skeptical, though leo took a hakf-step forward, obviously excited at the prospect. before the hound could comment, however, perseus fixed him with a look. "you have seen the gods and they sent you to us as a hunter," he stated, and leo dipped his head, and andromache felt a renewed stab of interest. she wondered what it would be like to be in the presence of the gods, even if only in a dream. "you walked with the gods and they brought you here for your skills. for that, they call you techne," perseus continued, and hermes leaned forward with a broad grin.
"a new hunter," hermes echoed, and andromache shot her friend a gentle smile, though she nudged him back from perseus, allowing the high priest to turn from the newly named techne to minnow.
"minnow, you came to us by what you think is chance, but i call it fate. for your strength, the gods have decided to call you brontes, for your thunderous strength," perseus said, and brontes seemed to stand up straight, his chest puffed out. then, with a smile, the high priest looked between the gathered group, his eyes lingering on proteus a moment too long in which his smile wavered. "we welcome you, and the gods are good."

as with the past arrivals, techne and brontes were welcome in the group, who carried on their lives as normal. alcides took to watching his growing family from the entrance from the den. across the clearing, tyche observed her pups playing, and hyperion trailed nearby - already, it seemed that the detached and grumpy commander had taken a liking to the group's only venus. perseus hustled from his den, past the pups, to exit the camp, likely in search of another herb. proteus had gathered the hunters together, though only techne appeared to be listening while andromache and hermes nudged one another, the larger greyhound mix nearly bowling andromache over, though the pair straightened up when proteus shot them a look.
proteus, over the past several weeks, appeared to alcides to be irritable and unlike himself. mentally, he noted to find a moment to speak to him alone to find the root of the problem, though he had a feeling it pertained to perseus. though alcides himself found a fondness in his best friend, he wasn't blind - he noticed how proteus spent most of his spare time with perseus. internally, alcides felt a twinge of hurt, but hoped that it would be for the best in the end, particularly when he noticed perseus beginning to reciprocate. truthfully, he wished the best for his friends, and hated to think that they might be experiencing a fight that had lasted so long already. as a leader, however, he knew that it would need to be fixed for the betterment of the group. if they could not reach an agreement of affection, then the relationship would be an interference in the group and another solution would be needed, seeing how crucial they both were.
when proteus dismissed his hunters, alcides rose to his paws and determined that the present was for the best. "proteus," he called out, tipping his head towards his den. the head hunter stood immediately, and joined alcides in his den.
"everything alright, alcides?" proteus questioned, and alcides paused. there was more than the spat between perseus and proteus on his mind.
at last, he offered a curt nod. "for the moment," he answered after the pause. "though i think we need to talk about a few things..." alcides trailed off to gather his thoughts, considering how to word his musings clearly. "i think that the group is growing too big for me to control on my own," he said, catching the uncertainty on proteus' face. "tyche's pups will be pupils before we know it. and there are more dogs coming with each day. i can't make all of the decisions on my own," he clarified, though the confusion didn't disappear from proteus' features.
"i can speak to hyperion," proteus said when alcides paused, head tipped to one side, words slow and measuring. "if there's more we can do. but i thought we both managed the hunters and fighters well."
"you are, of course," alcides cut in, ears perked. "you are both handling your duties well. but -" he paused again, letting out a soft sigh. "i suppose i worry that i'm not good enough as a leader. i need counsel by someone who can see the big picture. i need an adviser." at that, proteus' face shifted again, this time with interest instead of concern.
the head hunter leaned forward slightly, paws scraping the floor of the den. "alcides, you're a good demi-god. the gods chose you."
"and they chose you as well," alcides countered, eyes meeting proteus'. "they said that you would be important to our group. they chose you for a reason."
proteus froze before shaking his head. "you can't mean - i'm not - i can barely handle the hunters," he argued, but alcides slid one paw forward.
"you don't have to say yes, not yet. but, please, consider it, at least for the future. you're my best friend, proteus, and i want your counsel - always," alcides said, eyes shining with truth. perseus offered his position as a liaison between the group and the gods, but it seemed that the time was nearing when the demi-god would need a liaison between the group and himself, especially if the group continued to grow.
proteus nodded, eyes not leaving the ground, and alcides sighed again. "do we need to talk about perseus?" alcides asked when the silence stretched between them.
immediately, the den felt infinitely smaller, and proteus rose to his paws, eyes burning with hurt. "alcides - please - don't ask me about him."
for a moment, alcides thought that it would be best to handle the situation as the demi-god, but he stood as well, nuzzling proteus, and switched directly into a friend. "i'm sorry. is there anything i can do?" he asked.
proteus lowered his head, and his shoulders trembled with emotion. "he says the group needs him now, that he can't love me yet," proteus whispered, letting out a shuddering breath. "i'm sorry, it's still hard to be near him, but i'm trying."
"i know, proteus," alcides whispered in return, hating to see his best friend in such a state. "if you need me to do anything, or think of any way i can help, please tell me. i'd do anything for you." and it was the truth.

erato stood before her siblings, chest puffed out when she walked past her sisters and brother. "mom says we can play, so i think we should play like we were the fights and hunters," erato proposed, earning eager agreement from the other pups.
"i want to be andromache," galene piped up.
"can i be polyxena?" ersa chimed in, and the pair let out excited yips when erato, the usual ringleader of the siblings nodded.
"i'll be another fighter, like mom," erato stated, and the trio glanced at nestor when he spoke up, voice quiet but excite nonetheless.
nestor appeared smaller than his sisters, and, as the days passed, was rarely invited to play with them as much. instead, he looked forward to when perseus came to play, because perseus was always encouraging and came up with fun games for nestor. "can i be hyperion?" he asked, thinking of the strong golden retriever who also visited them often.
however, the young pups ears lowered when his sisters laughed at him, tossing their heads. ersa turned up her nose, shooting him a look from the corner of her eye, "you're not strong like hyperion," she pointed out, and nerstor lowered his head.
"you can be perseus," galene suggested, her voice neutral - not unkind like ersa's, but not gentle like their mother's, either. of his three sisters, nestor thought her the kindest, even if she did join in when ersa and erato teased him. "perseus is gentle, and so are you," she added, and nestor nodded without another word, deciding to agree, lest he was mocked again.
it was when his sisters began to play that he moved away from them, and he was unsurprised when they didn't comment on his absence. from afar, he watched the trio, his head resting on his forelegs.
he looked up only when a shadow fell across him, and he looked up to see hermes standing there, his long legs taking up most of nestor's sight until the hunter lowered himself with a smile. "hey, nestor. you feeling alright?" he asked. the hunter's tongue lolled from the side of his mouth.
"yeah, just didn't feel like playing," nestor mumbled as an excuse. like most of the others, hermes was often too busy to play with the pups, but nestor liked hermes from their past interactions. once, he heard hyperion telling his mother than hermes had bees for brains, but nestor didn't know what that meant, and hermes had always been kind.
"oh," hermes said, and nestor heard his thin tail beat the ground. "okay. well, if you change your mind, i'm sure i could think of a game to play with you," he said, and nestor rose his head in surprise. but, before he could speak up, hermes got to his paws and began to bound across the clearing.
thankfully, though, hermes paused when nestor called out to him. with another bright grin, he came back and nestor scraped the ground with a forepaw. "i think i changed my mind. i would like to play."

head held high, a sleek red-brown and white, slim body weaves through the trees, liver colored nose twitching and obsidian eyes narrowed and wary. the canine pauses to re mark the border that separates the outside world from the territory of the solemn silent brothers. a scent reaches the nose of their leader brother bucephalus, whose long legs stiffen, muscles standing prominent now at the tightening of limbs. it’s not an unpleasant scent, the scent of blackberries, but it sets him on edge as it wasn’t there before. ears pricked, he pads forward a few steps before the sound of scratching reaches his ears, growls rumble in his throat as he stalks toward the cluster of bushes where the sound had been coming from. he halts, lips pulling back from his teeth, in front of the bushes. “who’s there? this is silent brother territory.” the scratching stops, and a female canine backs out from the bushes, raising her head and studying brother bucephalus with dark brown eyes.
her fur is long, thick, a mixture of light grey, beige, and a reddish brown lighter than his own, her face, muzzle, and lips black. she’s well built and slender, with well sprung ribs. and her eyes are intelligent, though teasing a little. “really? i had no idea. my name is clover. what’s yours?”

her head high and proud, sister imogen decended down the cobblestone steps which led down into the vast floors and rooms which made up the underground silent city where the silent brothers reside, a plump squirrel swinging from her jaws and tail wagging with pride. the silent brothers and sisters would not go hungry as long as she was there to hunt.
