NocturneClan Prompt Writing:
"I don't like this."
The words that were so often repeated in the clan were repeated again. Edgewalker sat, listening again to what Sugarcane had overheard earlier. The two toms conversation had been awfully suspicious, and Edgewalker flexed his claws as he thought of the leader who dared to think she could take his land.
"No one does, my friend, but what can be done?" Sugarcane said. He let out a long puff of air, looking more tired and old than he ever had. Sugarcane was the eldest of the clan, but he was still strong for his age. Earlier that morning, Edgewalker had sent him out- or, rather, Sugarcane had asked to go- to the territory to snoop around. He overheard all the supposed 'Oracle' and that other fellow had said.
"They want us to go with them." Edgewalker muttered in reply, glancing outside the den. He could see the two were waiting by the camp entrance, far away enough to be seen. and not heard. Edgewalker had gone aside for a conference with Sugarcane, Tempestcloud and Crimsonsparrow. "What do you think?"
"We'll have to oblige..." Tempestcloud said with a sighed, rubbing his face with a paw as he tended to do when he was stressed. "... It's dangerous... but I don't see a way out of this. Either way it's bad... we could ignore them and they'll continue as the are... if we go-"
"They can take us captive." Crimsonsparrow said forlornly.
"-Yes. And, if we take a large patrol, they can come back and capture our weaker members... No, it's a bleak thing. However, it's a step we must take. We need to meet this leader. Then, maybe we can convince her to leave as alone."
"If I have to I'll fight her." Edgewalker meowed with finality. "One on one."
Tempestcloud's eyes widened- this had been the same tactic Fishsong, their uncle, had taken up against the rebel cats in his clan. It ended with Fishsong's death and Heronwhisker executing and exiling anyone who opposed him, and thinking about it made the deputy feel sick.
"Hey, don't give me that look!" Edgewalker mumbled, standing up. "... That won't happen again. We want peace, ultimately, I know, but if she's so stubborn as they seem to think... it may just come to blows."
The meeting was over. The four toms padded out of the den, getting cautious looks from Snowsight and Snowberry, who had waited just outside, to make sure the enemy didn't listen in.
"We're going, then?" Snowsight said, falling in step with her brothers.
"Yes. We want this to be over with already, I think this meeting will either end this problem or worsen it, but we need some conference with her, whoever she is." Edgewalker growled bluntly. "Your not coming this time either, sis. I'm leaving you in charge of camp, while Tempestcloud, Crimsonsparrow, Stick and Blizzardstripe come with me..."
He added afterwards, in a lower voice. "If anything happens to us... I want you here, you'll take care of our cats as leader, I know you will."
