Name: River
Gender: Female
Prompt (2,000 words):
War. Genocide of her people. A fallen kingdom.
River sat with her guests, about ready to eat a dinner of the highest quality, as she was a queen afterall. Being served the finest turkey prepared by the best chefs. Suddenly, sirens. Horns blared in alarm, and guards rushed to the queen to inform her of what was happening. Cloaked viscets: attackers. They were barging open the gates, then flowing through. Some scaling the brick walls, some simply blowing up the stone that protected the city.

The attackers didn’t care what they had to destroy, who they had to kill. “River has to pay” was their only thought. They would do anything to make her hurt.

The greatest and most wealthy, most friendly kingdom there ever was, but it wasn’t originally hers. She overthrew the kind king and made herself queen. The people were hesitant, but she proved herself worthy- a great queen. She did not use the kingdom’s money for a grand palace, but instead put the money into her kingdom to improve it for everyone. She was selfish at heart, but so much so that she had to be generous to keep the luxury of being a loved queen and to make it appear as if she didn’t also have a grand wardrobe and expensive, private, party dinners. However, when the attackers struck, she was too selfish to help her army. She valued her life above everyone elses, and since she hadn’t fought in so long, she feared her rustyness would get her killed- and though she knew if she died she would die noble and loved, she didn’t want to risk dying at all, so she didn't defend her people at all. Instead she ran- retreating the kingdom, bringing some of her best soldiers to protect her as she fled. Thus, she wasn’t there to lead her people to safety, and the swarm of attackers got to the people before her own army could protect them. Everything burned- it was all in ruins

Prompt: my life was chaos before I moved to the white mountains, before I opened my monastery. Before I dedicated my life to peace and helping others. I sat on death row, charged with murder, theft and arson, I admit I did all this in my past, I was a bad person and I deserved what I was going to get. I deserved the death sentence.

But sometimes fate can lead you down a better path, the judge took pitty on me, and gave me a choice between helping others or death. I chose to help, but first I had to find myself and who I really was. So I began hiking i turned my back on city's, towns I chose to live a solitary life to understand the world and myself. In the end I found what I was meant to be, the monk of the mountains, the friend in the shadows. I am Conji The Wise the founder of This Moastary

Name: Yinmi
Gender: Male
Prompt: 2,000 Words
Featuring: Bernie

▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁
Yinmi's Past

Empathy was a word so far from Yinmi's vocabulary that it might as well have been nonexistent. He was a simple viscet in many respects, concerned with simple pleasures and simple dreams. His perspective was simple as well. Yinmi did not care for anything except his own feelings. In fact, he cared so little about others' lives that the thought they may have their own takes on things never occurred to him even once in his whole life. If anyone ever did something he did not like, it was because they wanted to inconvenience him. If anything happened that Yinmi did not approve of, it was someone else's fault.
Strength was Yinmi's core value. He was determined to stand taller than anyone else. It was an affront to his very nature to consider bowing before another. At the first hint of a challenge, Yinmi was quick to put anyone and everyone in their place. Which, in his opinion, was always firmly below himself. Then, everything changed.

While he was once a wild viscet, Yinmi was captured and sold as a racevisct to a popular race track in Tennessee, but the stubborn, feral viscet proved extremely challenging to tame. Every day, caretakers would visit him, attempting to gain his trust, but Yinmi refused to let any of the humans near him. He spent most of his days locked in his stall, alone. Every day, he was allowed some time in the pasture with the other viscets, but it always took hours to catch him and take him back to his stall at the end of the day. Most of the other viscets avoided Yinmi. They quickly learned that he would not hesitate to bully them if they did anything he disapproved of. Yinmi refused to let anyone control him, even now, yet he had never felt more powerless in his life.

It was on one of his particularly moody days that Yinmi found himself standing by the fence, staring out at the great arena and wondering what might happen to him if he refused to ever race.
    "Um... Hi, there..."
A voice from behind broke his concentration. Yinmi turned his head just enough to glare at the intruder out of the corner of one eye. That was usually enough to get other viscets to leave him alone. Instead, the golden-pelted viscet that addressed him took a step closer and continued.
"Everyone says I should stay away from you, you know."
Yinmi narrowed his eyes threateningly. This idiot should have listened to "everyone".
"But... It's just... Well, I noticed you don't have anybody, do you?"
"I don't need anybody.", Yinmi growled.
Seemingly unintimidated by Yinmi's menacing mannerisms, the stranger continued.
"Doesn't it get lonely? I thought you might feel like that sometimes..."
He extended a friendly paw to Yinmi.
"I'm Bernie! Nice to meet ya!"
Yinmi scoffed. He slapped Bernie's paw away with his tail and turned his snarling face to confront the pest head-on.
"Get lost pipsqueak. Even if I wanted friends, you'd be the last one I'd pick. If you have even the tiniest bit of sense in that pea brain of yours, you'll stay out of my way."
Those harsh words seemed to have an effect on Bernie, whose smile fell as he gently rubbed his paw. As he turned away, Bernie sadly uttered one last remark.
    "Careful. That hurt me..."

Another few days went by, and Yinmi was satisfied that the annoying maned viscet who had pestered him that day would no longer pose a problem. Every time he spent time in the open pasture, all the other viscets left him to his own devices. Mostly, Yinmi sulked. He grew grouchier and more frustrated by the hour, and as the stress built up within him, he started to suffer. While he was much too proud to admit it, or even truly notice it, he was losing weight. This was easy to do when one's appetite was nearly nonexistent. Besides, eating would require Yinmi to join the crowd of the other viscets as they enjoyed meal time, and that was the last thing he wanted.
Around dinner time, Yinmi found himself sprawled on his side in the grass, idly watching the other viscets eagerly rush to their feeding troughs when the track staff arrived with the latest delivery of premium fresh meat. By now, Yinmi had noticed that Bernie was almost always the first one to eat. He ran like the devil himself was after him each time. Why Bernie was so interested in being first was something Yinmi neither knew nor cared about. It was simply an observation. However, today was a little different. Instead of eagerly digging into his meal as he always did, Bernie picked up his side of beef between his paws and turned towards Yinmi.
    "Oh, no...", Yinmi groaned.
    Bernie started approaching.
    "Don't you dare..."
He was not stopping. Yinmi lashed his tail in frustration.
    "Aw, for the love of..."
    "Hey! You're Yinmi, right?"
Reluctantly, he rolled onto his stomach, raised his head, and answered Bernie's question.
    "What's it to ya?"
Again, Yinmi's rough words rolled off of Bernie like water off a duck's back.
"I noticed you haven't been eating lately... Are you getting sick?"
"None of your business!", Yinmi snapped, pressing a forepaw into the grass to push himself to his feet.
Bernie interpreted that response as a "yes", and hurredly got to the point to prevent Yinmi from straining himself.
"Don't get up! Here, I brought you something to eat. Please take it."
Before Yinmi could react, Bernie placed the meat nearby and trotted off. At first, Yinmi intended to leave the side of beef to rot in the grass rather than accept the gift, but he changed his mind when he overheard a conversation between two other racers as they walked by. It was just bits and pieces, but they seemed to think Yinmi had started controlling Bernie and was using him for favors like a personal servant. Yinmi quite liked that idea, and decided on the spot to take back control by starting with Bernie. His appetite started to return, and he ate.

Life was still miserable for Yinmi, but while he had Bernie to boss around, it was considerably less so. Bernie was now fetching all of Yinmi's meals for him, and often entertained him by performing whatever actions Yinmi requested. This involved anything from prancing about like a lunatic to catching flies or picking grass one blade at a time. Bernie displayed great patience, and often seemed to interpret all of this as some form of play. Bernie had always attracted some negative attention for his uncanny interest in winning races, but while he was acting as Yinmi's crony, the teasing increased tenfold. Yinmi ignored this at first, or even egged Bernie's antagonists on, but it just kept getting worse, until it eventually got out of hand.

Yinmi was not quite sure what started it, or even how it had escalated so quickly, but things did not look good for Bernie. As usual, Yinmi was lounging about in the shade, idly watching his surroundings and enjoying his status as the "biggest kid on the playground", when his eyes became fixed on a spot at the other side of the pasture. Bernie was backing away slowly as a crowd consisting of most of the other raceviscets surrounded him. Yinmi could hear angry shouting, but he was too far away to make out what was said. Then, the crowd closed around Bernie and the shouting grew louder, more desperate. Was that Bernie's voice? Yinmi listened most closely as the golden viscet's disembodied voice created panicked shrieks amidst the dull roar of what was becoming a mob right before Yinmi's eyes. He felt his heart flutter, and startled at the unexpected sensation. After all this time, he had treated Bernie as exactly what he was: nothing. Yet, Yinmi now found himself feeling something. The feeling swelled within him until he could stand it no longer.
Within seconds, Yinmi had crossed the pasture and he did not stop even for the crowd. Instead, he plowed straight through, shoving several viscets into the dirt as he collided with their bodies. Yinmi was so focused that he hardly noticed the throbbing pain in his chest and ribcage from running straight into the living wall that had surrounded Bernie, who he found curled into a ball in the center of the crowd, protecting himself from kicks and scratches. There were so many bodies, all focused on doing harm, and now their wrath was focused on Yinmi instead. The pain and claustrophobic conditions enraged him. As Yinmi began to lash out at all within reach, he blacked out.

When Yinmi came to his senses again, the first thing he knew was the sensation of a taught rope around his neck, tugging him to the side. All around him, viscets cowered or scurried away. A team of caretakers had arrived to break up the fight, and several were working to get everyone under control. Then, Yinmi remembered. He glanced left, and then right, but saw no sign of Bernie. The rope around his neck pulled harder. Yinmi stumbled backwards, still disoriented from losing control during what must have been a fight. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his left haunch, and turned just in time to see a dart sticking out of his fur. It reminded him of that cursed dart all those months ago that had been the start of his descent into madness, when he was stolen from his home. He only had a few minutes of wakefulness left.
"Bernie!", he shouted. "Bernie, where are you?!"
Several feet away, a golden viscet straightened and spun around at the sound of his name. Yinmi only caught a glimpse of him before he was hidden from view again by fleeing viscets and urgent humans.
    "Bernie!", he shouted again.
The tranquilizer was already making him feel light-headed, but Yinmi stumbled towards Bernie anyways. The rope around his neck went slack, no doubt in the interest that he not injure himself while he was uncoordinated and woozy. He felt himself sinking into the earth. His body was so very heavy. Again, everything went dark.

Yinmi was back in his stall when he awoke. It took some time for the tranquilizer to wear off, but when it did, his mind went on overdrive. Try as he might, Yinmi simply could not remember what happened after he had leaped into that crowd for the sake of Bernie. Why had he risked himself for that idiot? Was Bernie even alright? What was going to happen to Yinmi, himself? Had he hurt anyone? Would the human punish him? As his head swam with anxious questions, Yinmi shuffled to the back of the stall and sat with his head between his paws. There was nothing to do but think, so he thought and thought for hours on end until a human came for him. Yinmi was so distracted by his worries that he hardly noticed what the human was doing, and he likely would not have understood it if he had. She cautiously entered his stall to observe him, occasionally reached out to gently touch him in various places, and then wrote down scribbles on her clipboard. This was probably all for the better, since Yinmi miraculously passed his behavioral assessment and was deemed safe to keep around the other viscets. It was not until he was placed in the pasture again for the first time that he finally realized what had tamed him, but when he saw Bernie again, Yinmi knew. Seeing that golden idiot in the distance smile his goofy grin and rush to greet him made Yinmi's heart swell with this new emotion.

Empathy and the bonds it brings with it had finally penetrated Yinmi's impermeable wall. For what might have been the first time in his life, he opened his arms, offering his embrace to his only friend.

Prompt (2,000 words):

I was born in the past. Long before any of this. So about a few thousand years ago. I lived in a tribe. A very chaotic tribe. There was always war. Most Viscets would be lucky if they survived childhood. No peace, always death. I was one of the lucky ones. I grew up just fine. Though food was scarce we could survive.

Name: Okami (Means hostess in Japanese)
Gender: Female
Prompt (2,000 words):
Okami was not her original name. She didn't really have a name before she was found. In the village she lived in, no one knew who she was or where she had come from. Just one day Okami was left in the village center as a young viscet. Now some of the other viscets took care of her, but no one claimed her. She just moved around within the village, learning who would give her food and blankets and who would shoo her away. It was a lonely life and Okami learned that people could be cruel. Especially in times of disaster.

A massive storm came through the village, tearing buildings apart and causing mayhem through the whole area. Okami ended up trapped under a piece of slab, crying out for help. Villagers walked by, but all were too concerned with their own safety to even give her a second look. She was trapped there for days, in pain, starving and covered in mud. She didn't know how long she could continue for. That's when a viscet moved through the village. He seemed to be searching for something and Okami tried to call out to him but her throat was raw from crying for help. He spotted her however and moved beside her. He tried to lift the slab but couldn't.

"Don't worry. I will not abandon you. I will be back with someone who can help." His voice was comforting but Okami still felt panic rising in her chest as he ran back into the woods. She waited what seemed like hours before the viscet returned with a large dark male following behind. The pair stood on either side of the slab and lifted it up off Okami enough that she could pull herself out. The thud of the slab hitting the ground behind her caused a deep chill to fill her and the dark viscet knelt besides her.

"I am Hades. Are you alright? You must be starving. Go fetch some water and food for her." He waved for the other viscet to go and he rushed off obediently.

"I think so.... I cannot move my legs however." Okami confided in him, tears forming in her eyes.

"Oh child. Be still." Hades was watching her with blue eyes and frowned at her suffering, "I am not a cruel viscet. I cannot save you but I can offer you a deal. Join me, become one of my angels and you will have your legs back. That is all I can offer you. I apologize I cannot do more."

Okami couldn't understand what he was talking about with angels but she figured the deal sounded too good, "What do I have to give in return for my legs."

Hades frowned, "Your life. By becoming an angel, you leave the mortal world and live with us in the underworld."

Okami looked at him, "So I would leave this place and join you?"

Hades nodded and she stuck out her paw, "Deal."

He seemed shocked at her response, "You do not want to think on it?"

She shook her head, "no. This place is cruel and has no place for me anyways. I will take your deal."

Hades smiled at her, "I never caught your name my dear."

She froze, how was she going to explain to him that she had no one that cared enough until now to give her a name. She didn't have to say a word as her expression told Hades all he needed to know.

"Ah. Orphaned?" She nodded and he continued, "Well how about Okami. It means hostess. Which in the underworld, I can imagine you would do well at."

Okami could hardly believe it. She had a name. She had a purpose. And she had people who cared.

From that day, Okami lived in the underworld working as a hostess to the recently departed spirits, guiding them to the proper locations to be judged and comforting them. She excelled at this position, her own trauma's and experiences leading for her ability to be more compassionate than some of the other angels who were uncertain how to handle spirits at times. And even though the angels were allowed to visit the mortal world with Hades permission, Okami refused, preferring to stay in the fields with the souls, moving through the crowds and listening to all their stories.
