Ungulate of Ashes

The Ungulate of Ashes, a group of rather odd hoofed creatures. They are temperamental to outsiders, sometimes aggressive, and aren't fond of change. They defend their own and find pride in strength. They reside in the forests around mountains, the cold fall and winter inviting more strength to be built.

Abraham gazed proudly at his foals. His daughter was beautiful, just like her mother. His son was a bit skinny, but Abraham would be sure to fix that! After all, the small bull was destined to be the next ruler of the ungulate. And Abraham was not going to have a scrap of fur and horn lead his precious group. He could see it now; his son, perched proudly on the overhang used to address the group, ears pricked and antlers scrapping the sky, a picture of pure leadership. The thought made his insides warm and a smile grow on his face. Montana smiled at the two foals nursing at her belly. “Have you thought of names yet?” Abraham asked, moving closer and settling net to his mate. Montana tilted her head. “I figured that the cow could be named Illa and the bull Hayes.” She suggested. Abraham nuzzled his beloved mate. “Perfect names for perfect foals.” He looked down at his offspring, resting his eyes on his son for a heartbeat longer. ‘Rest up, little Hayes.’ He thought ‘You’ve got a long road ahead of you.’

Nyke bounced happily up and down. She had just gotten apprenticed to Eric! She was going to be a soldier! Excitement and anticipation coursed through her, making her heart beat extra fast. Not only was she an apprentice, she was reunited with Zach! The 3 moons without her friend had been extremely boring, but now that they were the same rank again, she could train beside him! A huge smile was plastered on the small foal’s face, making her eyes squinty. Zach approached her with a smile almost as big. “Congrats!” He said cheerfully “It’ll be great sharing a den with you again! Plus, I’m pretty sure Aaron and Wric get along so we might get to train together!” Nyke bounces around him, joy spilling out in the form of endless energy. “I know!” She squealed “I cant wait!” Zach huffed in amusement. “Well come on, let’s go pick it your sleeping spot!” The zebra rushed. With that, the two bounded off towards the nook where the apprentices slept, racing eachother and thinking of what was to come.

There was excitement among the gathered Warriors. A new member had joined them, this time a pregnant dame. Pearl was a very feisty llama who Antoli was slightly scared of. She had an aggressive personality that seemed heightened because of the pregnancy. That moon at camp, Olympus was grazing (guarding) near the entrance to camp and Lottie had finally left Pearl alone to worry over herbs. Antoli trotted quickly over to the nursery and poked his head inside. Pearl was settled in one of the grass beds, her legs tucked neatly under her. She had her ears pinned back, but they snapped foreward once she caught sight of Antoli. On reflex, Antoli's ears went back and he cleared his throat. "I'm sorry to bother you." He apologized, dipping his head to her, "But I just wanted to make sure you had settled in all right."

Pearl's beady black eyes narrowed slightly, like she didn't know if it was safe to awnser. "Yes." She said finally, nodding her head, "It's taken a little time, but I am doing all right." Her voice was tired but he could tell that she was trying to hide it. She wasn't comfortable being weak in front of strangers. Antoli understood that.

"I'm glad." Antoli said and then looked down at his hooves. "Is there anything else I can do?"

"You could find my mate, Algernon. He was near the South border when we were separated."

"Of course. I'll do my best, Pearl." Antoli promised and ducked out of the nursery. He had a determined spring in his step as he exited camp, ready to find the lost mate.

weather. fall has arrived! leaves drift languidly from the treetops while a crisp chill permeates the air. a strong wind blows through ungulate territories, hinting at the upcoming snow that winter will bring. grass is shriveling, though there is still enough to feed off of. predators and new members are less likely to be spotted. birthings will be more difficult with a larger risk of harm to the mother or the foals.

It was a happy day. Rose, Apple and Pond played, Rose and Apple helping the blind fawn when she stumbled. Peach chatted excitedly with Lavender, while Sunny and Stream raced around camp. Ram held a little contest, the Guardianes fighting against each other to practice. Lettuce was complaining about something with Mud, the two relaxing in the sunshine.

Alone. That's how everything starts to Itoa. He is a lone soul, traveling without a home and without a family. He prefers this life but... it always sat weird in him. He wanted to try the family life now to see if that feeling fixed. Here in the mountain forests he would find his new home... and make a new ungulate.

"Warriors of the stars! Gather round!"

Antoli's booming voice echoed through the camp. He didn't need to be so loud and overdramatic since there were only six of them in the camp. Olympus and Sahara stood on the outskirts of the clearing to his left while Algernon, Pearl's newly found mate, shifted to his right. The llama was clearly nervous, which Antoli couldn't blame him for. He would be running for the hills by now if he was in his shoes, mate or not. Pearl and Lottie poked their heads eagerly out of the nursery.

"Welcome to the very first Orion Trials. A right of passage that determines whether or not you are a Spartan, an elite warrior of Orion--or a Seraph, one who was not up to the task." Antoli trotted into the center, ears pricked forwards. He made a show of turning to face Algernon. "Algernon," the llama perked up at his name. "Come and face me."

"What?" Algernon and Pearl both said at the same time.

Sahara arched her neck and Olympus shook his head, chuckling. His second had been told of the Trials when he became Second. "You have to fight, not only proving yourself to us but to Pegasus," He explained gesturing to the sky with his massive horns. Sahara was still frowning and Algernon looked terrified.

"Will I have to fight him too?" Sahara asked and Olympus shook his head. "I'm afraid that honor goes to me, hon. Ouch!" Olympus snorted and stumbled to the side as Sahara kicked him in the leg, not enough to cripple him but enough to make it hurt.

Algernon stared at them and then back at Antoli. He swallowed and stepped into the clearing. His footfalls were slow and heavy but he made it to Antoli. His black eyes were fearful yet held a hint of excitement. "I'm ready." He said.

"Great. Let's begin."

Nyke bounded up the hill. Her training so far had been so exciting! She got to push a huge rock into the sea to prove how strong she was and to get stronger. She wanted to be a member of the battalion, so she was training as hard as she could to get her skills up for Battle. Of course, she wasn’t going to fight anytime soon, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t train! But probably the best part of all, Zach complimented her on her strength! He was watching her and saw how far she pushed the stone. He pushed it farther than her, but that was only because he was older and had been an apprentice for longer! But it didn’t matter! Nyke and Zach had been friends since the moment she could walk. The two were hardly inseparable, and Nyke liked it. Not only that, but she liked him! Sure, she was young, but there was no denying her whopping crush on this stallion. Now, she trotted through the trees of the island. The warm sun was shining on her back, making it a bit lighter brown than usual. She walked on the patrol path with her mentor and the rest. She looked at Heath. She admired his bravery and the way he walked. It seemed so proud and royal. For a moment, longing struck her. She wished he was her mentor. But, horrified at herself, she quickly shook it away. Eric was a great mentor! He was brave and proud too! Just a little bit shy. He was super nice though and would definitely teach her everything she needed to know. Sighing, she closed her eyes. So many thoughts. Couldn’t she just for once enjoy the birdsong that filled the tropical air?
