◘General information◘
Quetzotalus are a large species of raptor, or bird of prey. They grow up to 6 feet tall, but can be stunted to half that. They are specialized, and appear to be a hybrid with a large breed of cat as well, mainly cheetah. They have large, strong wings that are more than capable of flight. Their bones are hollow, but despite this, are rather sturdy and strong. Their wings are specialized as well. They can be used as forelimbs, much like arms. They even have small hands on them and are able to grip with them. They use these for climbing, running along the forest floors to chase prey, holding prey, and even holding objects.
These creatures are found in forests and jungles, mostly. They don't try to blend in to their surroundings either. Their bodies are covered in a silken, plush fur and feathers. Both are most often vividly and brightly colored. They don't seem to come in any specific colors or patterns, and can sometimes even have colors that seem to clash a little bit.
Quetzotalus have long legs, built heavily with strong muscles. These are used for perching on branches, running at high speeds, kicking, and catching prey. They have three toes per foot. One in the back, and two in the front. The outer toes on both feet are shorter, and sport a massive, razor sharp talons. This is used for delivering devastating kicks.
Their eyes are large and forward facing. They are cat-like, able to see just as well in low to no light as they can in normal lighting. These eyes are very keen and can spot prey moving through the trees and leaves, even the most subtle of movements. Their ears are sensitive as well, able to hear everything within a mile around them.
◘Behavior◘
Quetzotalus are rather social creatures. They rarely fight with one another, and often even look out for one another. Most often than not, they live in flocks and form strong bonds with them. They can spend hours a say preening and grooming one another to keep these bonds strong.
They have a wide variety of calls and sounds they make towards one another. They make small chirps and chitters when roosting with their flock. They can roar and screech to communicate in longer distances, much like a wolf's howl. Growls and hisses are often warnings and used towards strangers almost every time.
Quetzotalus are docile, curious, and playful. Though each personality is unique. It's not unheard of to have a grumpy loner that hates being around others. Though, it is relatively rare.
◘Breeding and young◘
Quetzotalus aren't monogamous, though they can be from time to time. They will seek out a mate several times per year. Once a mate is found, the female, or queen, will lay up to 4 eggs at a time. However, it is possible that each egg could contain a twin. This is a very -very- rare occurrence, and the twin will be very similar to it's sibling. On average, a queen will only lay 1-2 eggs at a time. Both parents will tend to the eggs until they hatch. Once the kits emerge, the father often times leaves. The only time he stays with her and the kits is when they are part of the same flock, or are life-mates.
The kits are relatively helpless for the first few weeks. Much like both feline and birds, they are born with their eyes sealed. However, their mothers do not produce milk. They feed their young much like other birds will. For the first couple months, this require regurgitated meals. Afterwards, the mother will tear small bits of meat for her kits. Once the kits are around 6 months old, they are learning to fly and hunt on their own. Even without the ability to fly, they can climb and will explore around their nest site.
It takes two years for the kits to reach full adulthood. Though the mother stops caring for them after they learn to fly. The kits either roam to find, or form, a new flock. Or will join the mother's flock.
