Prompt Answer: Mother was surely a soft character, and hearing about the containment of some innocent creatures definitely got his heart thumping a little faster. He wasn't sure what he was doing, or what cause he was contributing towards, all he knew was that he felt horrible knowing that there were other creatures trapped in a cold, hard place somewhere. Sure, this whole lab had been offered to him by the forms of a membership; the 'red' containment? He hadn't thought about the creatures they had been trapping. They must be lonely. Mother felt his own heart shift just thinking that; he would definitely have to figure something out.
The plan that Mother came up with was something so out of his character that he almost questioned his own idea.
With a shuffling of his paws and some nervous glances around with his functioning set of eyes, he gave a soft sigh to himself as he slowly started to stand up. Some of his ever shifting matter dribbled down his leg, softly spilling across the floor before disintegrating like it had never been there in the first place. Mother was anxious, worried and stressed but, nonetheless, he was making his way towards the section of the lab that had been reserved for certain members; one member that had been him in specific. He had gotten a code jotted down for him and placed in a lanyard around his neck. His gushy figure hadn't like the intruding item, although, it hadn't even tried to pull it into him to get dissolved like water. Mother twitched the tops of his slimy ears, tail dragging carelessly along the floor and leaving a temporary white stain before disappearing; as usual.
Inserting the code into the door, he listened for a soft click before pushing open the door. The room he stepped into didn't feel homely at all; the only light source came from some dim hanging lights and the glowing liquid inside tall, cylinder containers that were lined up from wall to wall. It smelled like chemicals. The floor was hard and cold. Mother felt his own heart sink at the idea of anyone being forced to live in this place; it was absolutely horrible. The male sniffled a little, flinching when he stepped over a loose cord on the floor. There were a lot of chords; this felt more like a chamber than anything else and, frankly, he didn’t like it. He didn’t understand why they were putting such soft, innocent creatures into this room. It truly disturbed the white canid, making his body shake like a leaf in the wind. Anxiety was setting in; until his eyes landed on a teal container that wasn’t empty. There was a floating, black body in it. Bubbles were floating around the creature, and it seemed to be in a feint state.
Trotting forward at a greater speed than before, Mother tripped over some wires and got his white goop in some areas before he was in front of the container. It wasn’t that large; not as large as himself, at least. He ended up having to bend down to look into the container, dark eyes scanning the creature for any movement. It was breathing, it seemed, but it wasn’t moving. Mother was bothered, ears flickering and twitching more with every passing second. It took the male a moment before he was circling the container, looking for some kind of possible outlet to trigger the container. He ended up locating a cord that led away from the cylinder, leading to some power board designated for the containment unit. He couldn’t have been happier to run his paws along the board, pressing at each button. There were multiple clicks; some louder and longer than the others.
Regardless, the container made a whooshing sound and the teal liquid started to drain out of the unit. It fizzled down a tube that he hadn’t noticed before, pumping away to some unknown pool that he couldn’t see. The teal drained quickly, lowering the creature inside with every passing second. Once the container was empty, he quickly left the board aside and moved to the container of the small creature, bending down to look at it lying lifelessly at the bottom of the cylinder. He felt his heart strings begin to snap after the creature didn’t move; it didn’t seem to be breathing anymore.
Or so he had thought.
In his own silent mourning, he missed the creature’s tail twitching to life, its eyelids peeling back to reveal glowing, seemingly curious eyes. It shifted slowly, tentatively, bringing itself to sit up. Its ears flattened back after it noticed Mother near its container, a snarl playing on its thin lips as vicious teeth were displayed. Raising its hackles, it got up with a minor wince and glared at Mother with a passion that it had obtained for anyone in the laboratory. It had been through enough in this place to the point it was tired and scared and hurting. Mother shifted slightly and decided to bring his hanging head up to look at the container and yelp; jumping back in surprise and tripping over an extra large cord, once again. His dark eyes were wide and he was dripping goop everywhere, coating the ground around him in temporary liquid before it all vanished. The creature in the container leaped at him without remorse, slamming into the side of the unit only to get thrown back against the other side.
Mother whined, dragging himself backwards as the creature began to repeatedly lunge at him inside the container. The glass was beginning to break; without the liquid, the glass had to deal with a full-force impact from the creature. It was chipping, thin lines visibly breaking across the surface of the glass. Mother was worried, instantly reconsidering the idea that he had created; reconsidering the actions he had committed. It wasn’t like he had thought about security cameras or anything. He didn’t blend in with the other members of the community, there wasn’t any mistaking him for someone else. Heart racing, the white canid decided to scramble to get up, hopping up onto his hind legs just to pivot around and start his own escape. He heard the glass shattering around him, followed by an animalistic growl.
Steps that were heavier than his own started mimicking his own steps offhandedly, making his anxiety rise more as he started to near the door to the room. There was heavy panting, a hot breathing sound that made Mother’s hackles inch up in fear. He looked out the corner of his eyes to see the black figure running next to his heels; despite this, the growl had vanished from its lips and it was running straight forward, its gaze on nothing but the door in front of them. Mother was almost confused, until he watched the door to the room automatically slide open to release him- and the creature. A choked cry escaped Mother’s throat too late as he slid through the door, the creature gracefully sprinting out from next to him and navigating to the left.
Mother could only silently stare after the dark figure making it’s escape.
He felt his soul sink in his body as he let his stiff shoulders go limp, a wave of confusion passing through him.
What had he done?
