the monarchy's will is sovereign. there is great power in the idea of a lineage sustained for so long. b
ut power makes one a target. there are three ruling powers: the kingom of aurelia, the kingdom of m
orland, and the kingdom of roan. an uprising in roan threatens to start a war and overtake the throne
of aurelia, the largest of three. with their armies scattered, aurelia looks to the heir to protect them.
the best choice is a union with the kingdom of morland. an alliance. a marriage. morland's king has fa
llen deathly ill, and with no male heir and very deep debts, they are inclined to accept aurelia's prop
osal, and use a marriage between aurelia's heir and morland's lone princess to fight a common enemy.
but there is danger around every corner─spies in their midst and a war looming on the horizon, gossip
ing tongues and noble families more than eager to take a chance to grab the crown. love, betrayal, a
nd passions run rampant during these trying times. one must be careful where one's trust is placed.

THE PLOT

the eldest daughter and only child of morland has traveled across the country to be united in marriag
e to the heir of aurelia. the two kingdoms have age old bad blood, but now they must set aside their
past in order to protect both of their thrones. morland needs aurelia's financial support and a male h
eir before the king dies. aurelia requires morland's armies. but fate was never kind─the morland prin
cess is deeply in love with one of her family's knights, and the aurelia heir has a terrible reputation a
s being irresponsible and a reckless heartbreaker with three other failed engagements under his belt.

this rp will mainly be about all the court drama that ensues as a result of the arrival of the morland p
rincess and her ladies, as well as the two knights that accompany them.

      the habits of my heart
FEELING sorry for himself ━ TAGGED elyana ━ CURRENTLY whining to his sister
      ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The stars were twinkling brilliant, bright in the clear black of the sky. There wasn't a cloud to be seen - and the moon showed her full, gleaming face unobscured. She was shining for them - of course she was; shining a blessing or an omen, though, Cassius couldn't say. The pungent scent of the wine at his feet was curling up to his nose, and what he'd already had to drink was beginning to warm him up and make this whole ordeal a bit easier. Still, he felt like the guillotine was about to drop, and he wasn't sure who was going to lose their head.

"If I didn't know better I would accuse our mother of witchcraft." Cassius's words were muffled and slurred, partly from the wine that had stained his lips and partly from burying his face in the fabric of his sister's shoulder. A warm Spring breeze wafted in through the open balcony doors of Elyana's chamber, disturbing the thin curtains and the chimes hanging above her vanity. With it came the joyful sounds of the celebration below - laughter, music (the rambunctious kind that could be heard in the villages), a throng of chattering voices, and a distinct bellowing laugh much louder than the others that Cas instantly picked out as his father's. Somehow, their mother (who insisted on having fireworks over the pond as the final send-off for the night) had rearranged nature's patterns and turned a gloomy grey day full of threatening thunderheads to the kind of crystalline night Romeo would have wooed Juliet on her balcony under.

As most things went with the Queen Mother, no expense was spared (a trait his sister had stylishly inherited). The palace gardens were a thing of envy. Mother nature herself could not have arranged the rows of fig trees in such pleasing lines, or grown elegant weeping willows along the edge of the lily covered pond, or so meticulously trailed the ivy over the marble statues of Greek heroes in a way that was just haphazard enough to make the whole thing appear romantic. At the heart of the garden was the maze - complicated twists and turns of rosebush trellises for lovers to get lost in and kiss until they were blushing as deep as the blooms. Candles floated in tiny glass bowls out on the water, and the tables were laden over with mountains of rich foods and delicate desserts. There was enough wine and drink to keep every courtier in a drunken stupor for the next week. Cassius had only sneaked a glance on his way to his sister's chamber, but it was true his mother had crafted their own dreamy Eden for the night.

Despite his best efforts to get out of it, his parents had managed to wrangle him into a few history lessons in preparation for this...engagement. The political history of Morland and Aurelia was apparently much more colorful than Cassius ever realized, and much bloodier for that matter. The quarrels over the forests and hunting grounds between the two kingdoms, as well as the trade route, had been the cause of more betrayal and indiscretion on both sides than he doubted he would have ever learned were the circumstances not as dire. Cassius had been sprawled out over a chair, half listening while his father, once again, emphasized the importance that this exchange go off without a hitch. He'd heard it hundreds of times before, and about three other girls. This was a trade deal, a necessary political move to ensure the protection of both kingdoms. Cassius had merely yawned. It gave him a headache just thinking about it.

The tales of war and bloodshed had left a strange visual in Cassius's mind. He pictured the Morland princess on horseback, half naked and bloodied, brandishing a sword and yelling out across a field of fallen soldiers. Instead, when the princess arrived accompanied by her ladies and her knights, he was face-to-face not with a Valkyrie but a girl. In a word, she was stunning. Fine and soft, with a curious, gentle expression and the strangest way of moving Cassius had ever seen. Her movements were fluid━almost like she slid or glided rather than walked, and there was something airy about her, too delicate, too careful. He had bowed and kissed her knuckles as he had bowed and kissed the knuckles of countless nobles before her. His golden ringlets had brushed the back of her hand. In a show of good will, garlands were brought out on velvet pillows, held by little girls, daughters of court ladies in fairy dresses. It was a pretty display as the Morland ladies bowed deeply to allow the girls to place the garlands, decorated with white flowers and ribbons, upon their heads. When Ellamore bowed, the youngest girl, who couldn't have been more than four or five, set the crown of flowers upon the princess's pale tresses with such care, and when she was done she gave Ellamore the tiniest peck on her cheek, made a clumsy curtsy, and scampered off in giggles to return to her mother.

Cassius's head was still swimming, two days later. He thought, maybe, he would have preferred a Valkyrie. Few things had ever kept Cas from a party. He was a reveler. He lived for the dancing and the music and the love making and the stories. By now, he should have been halfway to making a fool of himself with Rowen. Instead, he was here, with his little sister, hiding from a girl that looked like a porcelain doll.

Cas sat up, slouching back against the trunk at the foot of Elyana's bed. His shirt would wrinkle. He didn't care. His doublet was unbuttoned and his curls a fine tousled mess. He was pitiful.

"I don't think I can face them. There's not enough wine in the world to get me drunk enough to deal with this." He shook his head, taking up the glass on the floor and throwing back the rest of the drink.

      xELYANA
      ───────────── princess of aurelia! ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
      xxxxxxx[ female ] - [ twenty three ] - [ tagged: cassius ]
      ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

xxxxxxxBathed in the soft light of candles, Ely could almost imagine that she was getting ready for a grand ball in her honour, or perhaps she was a queen and was getting ready for a feast. Her maids had long since left her after helping her getting dressed into her gown after a long soak in a bath infused with rose oil. As always, she had insisted on doing her makeup herself, sat in front of her vanity with the cool breeze drifting through, pulling at strands of her golden hair.

xxxxxxxIt was all terribly romantic. She paused, placing her powder puff down and reaching for the glass of wine. The cool rim was just reaching her lips when a voice broke through the silence behind her.

xxxxxxxHer brother had joined her maybe ten, fifteen minutes prior, already looking like he'd drunk half a bottle of wine. Distinctly dishevelled, he had knocked on her door and she had let him in, ignoring the giggling of her maids. It seemed everyone was enamoured with him, not matter what he did. But she alone knew his secrets, knew the pressure he put on himself, like he carried the entire world on his shoulders. Every time he came to her, it broke her heart in two. Tonight was no different, even with the music of the party below floating up towards them.

xxxxxxxEly rolled her eyes, sipping her wine delicately. She didn't know what Cassius had brought with him, but she favoured a light, refreshing rosé - and she likely would stick to it for the rest of the night. Unlike her dear eldest brother, she preferred to stay somewhat lucid and sensible. Tonight, that was even more important.

xxxxxxxThe relationship between Aurelia and Morland was... tempestuous at best, and violent at worst. Centuries of war and bloodshed had painted a sorry picture, and hatred ran through the veins of each kingdom's citizens, the royalty included. But the joint threat of Roan had forced a rushed treaty. With luck, there would be no sleight of hand from Morland. This deal was in everyone's best interests, especially their people. They had the means to protect the defenceless, and it had to be taken.

xxxxxxxDeciding not to answer, Ely used a brush to apply rouge to her cheeks, and then a delicate finger to her lips. Tonight was a statement, and a welcoming to Princess Ellamore. While not officially announced, everyone knew that this was a celebration of a union. God forbid Cas show himself up, or embarrass his bride to be. Ely rather had a feeling that it would be up to her to keep him on the straight and narrow. Sometimes, she felt like his mother, not his little sister.

xxxxxxxIt was when her makeup was finally applied and her brother spoke again that the princess turned around, fixing her sights on the Aurelian heir as he downed the rest of his drink. She tutted, standing up gracefully and shaking her head.

xxxxxxx"You know that you must, Cas." She said, making her way over. The skirt of her dress barely skimmed across the mosaic tiled floor, her heels clicking as she moved closer.

xxxxxxxHer hands curled loosely together as she sat on her trunk, blue gaze soft. She was silent for a moment more, and then slid her fingers into his lion's mane of ringlets. It was as soft as it looked, shining in the low light. Any woman would be looking to have the interests of him - it was just a shame he could never seem to stick to his engagements. Her brother was such a melodramatic libertine.

xxxxxxx"The princess is a fine match," she said kindly, rubbing the pads of her fingers on his scalp in what she hoped was a soothing gesture, "she is beautiful, and will make a splendid queen and wife. Besides, you know this is political, and you must go through with it. For your people and your family." She herself was expecting their parents to tell them she was betrothed to a Roan prince. Hopefully, it would not come to that. This union should make them stronger than their enemy, and stop the war before it truly began.

⊱ Ander liked to think that being the prince of Aurelia, he was no stranger to expectation. And when it came to the political workings and the day-to-day court life he did well━better than most, he thought. Give him a battle strategy to work out, or a dispute of honor between two noblemen to put to rest. Give him a sword, give him books, give him rules. But don't ask him to drink the night away being chummy with the Lord of Whatsit and the Lady of Wherever. These large gatherings and lavish parties always made him uneasy.Too many faces to remember, too many introductions and niceties to be made. And too many people. If he had it his way, he wouldn't be bothered. He would hole up in his study or the library with his telescope and his books. Still, he accepted his━admittedly privileged━lot in life with the smile and grace that was expected of him.

Which, in all fairness, was more than Cassius could say.

The fair-haired child had yet to make an appearance. And, Lysander noted with a frown, neither had their sister. He sighed, rolling his shoulders, which were getting sore from standing upright in one place. Cassius wasn't quite late enough for it to be improper, but he was pushing it. Ander prayed he was with Elyana, who was probably the one person who could twist Cas's arm, and that she would try to sober him up a bit before escorting him to the garden. When Lysander had seen him last, Cassius had been lounging on one of the couches with a bottle of something, staring despondently at the ceiling, humming to himself.

Lysander was standing at the right hand of his father's seat, at the ready to greet the noble men and women with a bow or a gentle kiss to the knuckles. He always played nice, and really he complained twice as much as it actually bothered him, but on this particular evening his actions were of the utmost importance, even though it was no question that everyone would be looking at the Morland princess and her soon-to-be betrothed rather than him. He had to hand it to his mother, the three kingdoms had never seen the likes of such an opulent party. The sheer excess with which the king and queen displayed their gratitude toward the heir of Morland was bordering on embarrassing. The princess was here to secure the finances to ease her kingdom's debts, and to ensure her crown would not be stolen from her by a male cousin should her father pass. Something about the grandeur seemed in poor taste, but Lysander bit his tongue, regardless of how much he wished his parents had dealt with the situation a little more tactfully.

One at a time, the ladies of the Morland court descended the stone garden stairs, two of them, each flanked by a nobleman. His eye was observing, but not critical. It wasn't in his nature to judge. He had met them, briefly, the day they arrived, but hadn't seen them at all since. Travelling so far, he assumed, must have made them tired. Tonight would be his opportunity to make a good impression.

Under the twinkling stars, the first young woman stepped out onto the grass. Lady Florence Hunt. She was a petite little thing with bony wrists and dark curls pulled into an intricate sort of updo. She was graceful, moving in a way that Ander pinned as the trained steps of a dancer. His expression soften as she moved into a pool of moonlight. She was smiling. A small, confident smile. He couldn't help but match it.

The second lady he knew to be Celestia Ronaldi. She, too, was a slender creature, with fairer features than Florence. To his knowledge, the Lady Celestia had earned herself something of a reputation. The words spoken of her in hushed tones were not kind ones, but Ander intended to know her for himself before he made any decisions.

Lastly, swept into the evening accompanied by her two knights, was the princess and future queen, Ellamore. Lysander raised his chin and shifted his weight. If she was nervous, it was impossible to tell. He hoped that wherever he was, Cassius was shaking in his boots.

As the princess and her ladies, flanked by their company, approached the royal family, Ander gave a low, respectful bow, which the ladies mimicked. The Queen then stood up from her seat, opened her arms and embraced Ellamore with a warm smile. The King remained where he sat, but he gave a gracious nod of the head, and a small, stoic smile. Ander's gaze drifted from the women to the knights behind them. His eyes lingered for a moment on the man with the dark curls and a serious face, but quickly blinked away.

The music had struck up again. It would be wholly improper for any of the honored guests to sit out the first dance. With Cassius still no where to be seen, the King himself stood and offered his hand to Ellamore. The nobleman that accompanied her led Celestia out into the dancing crowd. Ander took the two steps down off of the platform until he was standing in the grass in front of Lady Florence.

With a sweeping bow, he scooped her hand up in his and kissed it delicately. "I would be honored if you would join me in this first dance, Lady Florence."

Shoulders back, friendly gaze, proper pace….. Repeating the words over and over in her head Ella made her way down the stairs her two trusted knights following closely. Eyes from everywear landed on her, and she could feel every single one, judging and watching her every move. Finally making it to the finally step she eased up a little, Gliding over to where the queen and king were waiting she watched as her ladies properly introduced themselves, they were both incredibly beautiful and she couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of happiness seeing her two best friends thriving. Her attention was brought back to the king who offered his own hand since it was clear his son was not to be seen, Happily placing her small hand into his she let him guide her into a dance. Please god don’t step on his toes clearing her throat she thought it best to start up a conversation rather than dance in silence. “ The gardens are so beautiful, you must tell me if the roses are imported or grown locally, i promise i won’t tell anyone” she smiled, and listened carefully as he explained where the roses were grown and how expensive they were.

Ella was an expert at listening but not really listening, so while the king was going on about roses she found herself thinking about, morland. It was beautifiul , poorer but beautiful. She recalled many times when celestia and herself would get lost just running through the fields of flowers before soon collapsing and staring up into the magnificent sky.

The king had stopped talking and Ella instantly brought herself back to the real world. “ Sounds amazing i’ll be sure to go enjoy the rosebush maze” she stated as he released her at the pause of the song, Ella curtsied and made her way over to a decorated chair cushioned by extravagant pillows. Taking a seat she watched as another song started to play and the dance floor was once more filled with people.

Music filled her ears as the fair maiden looked up to the sky, a full moon smiling back at her. Her mother used to tell her whenever you look up into sky and see the moon, someone somewhere was looking at that same moon….thinking about you. Whoever they may be were your soulmate. Ella always believed that, and even now when she is engaged to a prince who didn’t even bother to show up, she still believes someone somewhere is thinking about her.

Moving her gaze back to the dancing crowd, ella smiled as long as this marriage worked she would be happy. Because if her people were safe and protected then she would be happy, even if that meant her husband had a mistress. As long as they were legally married her kingdom would be safe. Proceeding to smooth out the wrinkles in her dress Ella crossed her legs and waited, she wasn’t exactly sure what she was waiting for but it probably had something to do
With a certain prince.
