She ran a hand down the photo. It was dated to eight years ago, almost to the day. The Jasper branch of Old Pack had just claimed independence and become Crimson Sky. She remembered it. But she didn't remember this picture being taken. The Alphaess, Blair's mother and her mom, all arm in arm and laughing at some joke that time had long since hidden. She'd cried all of her tears long ago, but she felt a pang as she marked the page carefully and moved on to the next photo. One of the Alphaess' other kids and Blair. Despite the language barrier, they seemed pretty happy playing monopoly in the sun.
As hard as she tried, Emmelene wasn't much of a fighter. Come to speak of it, she wasn't much of a hunter, either. But the one thing lying in her favour was her instincts. Obviously, they weren't perfect - the dull ache in her abdomen was enough to remind her of thathe - but they were good.
So when she felt it, she froze, still holding the photo album she'd been distractedly perusing, then placed the album to one side and knelt, placed one ear to the floorboards.
The words were very, very muffled. She couldn't quite make them out.
Grabbing the clothes and the album, she crept downstairs as quietly as she could - for once, her scrawny build was coming into use - and moved towards the infirmary, narrowing her eyes when she picked out "Alpha Hale", and ducking out of sight as soon as Jason emerged, backing into a hallway closet and crouching among the weapons.
Well, that was interesting.

"Alright, I get the idea. Yessir. Yessir. No, sir. Got it."
He almost tore the earpiece out as he hurried owards his pickup, arms full of groceries and apologising profusely to people he had to slide past as he jogged.
So much for not drawing attention to yourself.
He'd managed to escape the female he'd ended up chatting up and pay for his groceries in under two minutes, thanks to the now empty store, and had been heading back when the orders had been barked over his headpiece. It was good to hear the old grump was more or less okay. It was less good to hear the final fate of his immediate superior. It hurt.
Two down. Three left.
"I'm on my way now." He murmured into Kat's wavelength as he crossed the lat street and unlocked his pickup. "Look, Kat, I'm more than capable of... cleaning up myself. Maybe you two should stay at HQ?"
