iv. "I just went for a run." (423 words)
The girl in front of him started shouting almost before he fully re-materialized.
"We have been looking all over for you! You were supposed to be at orientation an hour ago! You-"
He raised a hand to cut her off. "It cannot be that late. I was there for all of thirty minutes!"
"It has been three hours since you were reported missing. Where were you? We have talked about this!"
"I just went for a run. In Seyvis. You don't have to freak out so much, Kenia!" He waved his hand at the shimmering portal behind him, and it disappeared with a pop.
"Just a run? In Seyvis? You better not have left the portal open the whole time again, Ayulin."
"Well, I thought I would be back soon! I did not want to waste so much energy doing that!"
"You are such an idiot. Such an idiot." Kenia began pacing around the old warehouse, frowning and occasionally shooting a glare at him. "We have been over this! You have no idea what may have come through! Seyvin look almost exactly like us. How will we ever find them and return them? No one from the other dimensions should know the secrets of the Kozui. You need to stop visiting other dimensions all the time. What if you get stranded? What if you get killed?"
"What is the point of having this power if we are not supposed to use it?"
"We were given it to use it responsibly! Because of one trip to Seyvis, you may have put thousands of dimensions in danger!"
Ayulin snorted. "I hid the portal well. No one would have found it. If you're so concerned about this, why don't you go look for some Seyvin?"
Kenia's frown intensified and she glowered at him. "Alright, then. I suppose we will not punish you too harshly this time. This is your last warning. If you do it again, I can get them to take it away from you indefinitely. You must ask for permission every time you want to go. There is more at stake here than you realize." She paused for a minute, and then added, "You have missed a lot. We will send you the rule book tomorrow. We will be less lenient if you break a rule, because you could not bother to come to orientation. I suggest that you read it in its entirety. I have matters to attend to." She closed the door on her way out, leaving Ayulin in complete darkness.
