Bred in the late 1780's when Westport became its own city in the Republic of Ireland, a new breed of horses were founded

and finally created. Descendants of breeds such as the Irish cob, Belgain Warmblood, English Thoroughbred, and the

Connemara pony, came the Westport Cob. Their strong body's making them early work horses, but later bred to be show

horses and companions to lead into war at the time.
