Chapter Ten

spaceSamuel stood in the room, his back to the wall as he rolled his neck. The day was ticking by incredibly slow and he found himself eager to leave just for the sake of doing something other than what he was tasked with. His eyes drifted to the door as the thought struck him firmly. Perhaps he could convince Asteria to take over. . .

spaceThe door across the room buzzed and opened and the next viscling walked in. She was smaller than the others and seemed nervous, but she smiled at him anyway. Her pelt was a soft brown with darker patches and her paws were laced with longer, soft feathers. Her mane was like fire while her chest feathers were a softened pink. Her tail was almost invisible at a glance, being no more than a nub on her back, and her floppy ears were large, almost covering her eyes. She sat down on the small cushion and looked around anxiously, the smile never leaving her muzzle.

    space“Why are you smiling?”

spaceShe jumped a little and looked up to him. “If I keep smiling, then it will convince me that things are okay and I am safe.”

spaceSamuel’s expression did not change as he gazed down at the viscling in silence for several moment. “Name.”

    space“Haylee June Rei.”

    space“Age.”

    space“One year and one month.”

    space“Date of birth.”

    space“February Nineteenth.”

    space“Power.”

    space“I can heal things.”

spaceSamuel grunted and nodded. He extended his arm then slashed a cut open with his other paw. He knelt before her and held his arm out, the wound he made slowly bleeding. “Heal it.”

spaceHer smile fell and she shifted nervously. “I can’t heal that. . .”

spaceSamuel frowned. “You said that you can heal.”

spaceThe viscling looked up at him with apologetic eyes. “I do, but only small things. . . scraps and scratches, a few bruises. . . I can’t work with full cuts.”

spaceSlowly, Samuel’s brows drew together as he stared at her in confusion, though it was not directed to her.

spaceSamuel stood and backed away, his eyes still on her. His confused expression melted, but his thoughts remained. “Well then. Go on ahead to get food, you’re cleared.”

spaceShe nodded and ran ahead, then paused and looked back. “I’m sorry, mister. I hope that wound heals up soon. . . I’ll be more clear about what I can and cannot do in the future.”

spaceSamuel’s eyebrows drew together again as he watched her run out. She was a peculiar viscling, that was for sure. Despite being kidnapped, she held nothing but respect and honesty for him. He raised his eyebrows and shook his head while releasing air from his nose. The door buzzed and the next viscling rushed in, its body arched and its feathers raised in terror as it hissed at him. He continued his work, logging and questioning each viscling, though the cut on his arm kept his thought on the young viscling the whole time. Haylee June Rei.

spaceSamuel walked in silence, his head low and his tail hovering just an inch above the ground. He hesitated for a moment, his eyes on the ground that he and June had celebrated over when they had first reached the mountain base. His paw prints were still visible in the bent grass.

spaceHe stepped forward and entered the forest of the flat lands once more, the mountain now behind him, along with June.

spaceBirds sang overhead, flying and fluttering to and fro but growing quiet as he neared, their dark eyes wearily resting on his back as he passed. A rabbit sat in the middle of the path, gnawing on blades of grass while searching for a better blade with its paws. Its eyes rested on him and a moment later the small creature was gone, bounding off into the bushes and trees to escape. A fly buzzed past his ear and landed on his face, just behind his eye. Samuel shook his head and the small creature flew away. Where he walked, the land grew quiet.

spaceIn the sky, the moon was taking its throne. He imagined that Kas would be asleep now, as well, curled up with June like Asteria would do back when things were better. His stomach clenched and turned and he pinned his ears to the back of his skull. His mind drifted to the nagging thought which proclaimed itself as truth: he was nothing without Asteria. His failure to June seemed to prove that.

spaceIt was dawn when Samuel’s pace finally began to slow noticeably. He was not tired, at least not physically, but the cluster of thoughts in his head seemed to act as an anchor rooted to the ground behind him, dragging him and becoming heavier and heavier with each step. They were a vortex of shouts and whispers, spiraling down to one simple topic, one he had turned his back on: June.

spaceWas she okay? Did they reach the peak yet? Have they encountered more foes? Is her ability improving? Has she noticed he left? Does she care? Was his decision the right one to make?

spaceSamuel snarled and shook his head violently, trying to throw the thoughts from his head. He snarled at them, warning and threatening them viciously, and slowly they began to fade. However, they were only replaced by something firmer, something that seemed to come outside of him and from within all at once.

    space“So. That is it, huh?”

spaceSamuel’s ears pricked up and he looked around. It was a male voice, quite similar to his, though softer. He frowned deeply and pressed on, trying to ignore the crumbling of his mind.

space “You come this far, then just walk away. Why? Because you’re scared?”

space“I cannot protect her!” His voice was a loud, barking snarl. His tail whipped as he spoke and he lifted his head, shouting at the voice which came from everywhere and nowhere.

spaceHe paused a moment and slowly relaxed. His brows furrowed and he shook his head slowly as he continued to walk again.

space “Hah! Pathetic!" Samuel froze up and looked around, his feathers bristling as he searched for the source of that voice. "That’s all you are, isn’t it? Pathetic. Raised by a man who wants to squash the world with his thumb. You realize that, and you end up wanting to work closer to him until you pity a child. You then run away from this man who gave you everything! Shelter, food, warmth, family, care, a job, and a chance to get stronger! Only to turn away and tuck your tail between your legs because I’ve got you cornered!”

spaceSamuel snarled and shook his head violently, as if to shake the words from his skull.

space“Don’t be stupid, Samuel. Open your eyes, you coward! Is it truly better to turn away and hide with your tail tucked, or to die fighting for one you want to see succeed!?”

space“If I die then she would too!” His shout was desperate. He felt a crushing pressure in his chest and his muscles tensed and trembled.

space “You give her and yourself too little credit." The voice was suddenly soft, almost sad. Samuel slowly calmed at the sound of it, though the pressure in his chest remained. "I have seen you in battle, I have seen your spirit. Despite my weight you press on relentlessly until victory is achieved. You and I both know that you do it all for her. Your strongest moments, where I am straining against you, are when you feel she is in danger. She is your reason to fight, and you have just walked away.”

    spaceSamuel growled. “Who are you.”

space “Don’t use that tone with me, Samuel. You knew very well who I am, but you seem to have forgotten me over the years. At least, until I appeared on your sides.”

spaceSamuel flattened his ears. “What are you implying?”

space “You’ve looked at me several times on this journey, your companions too. Each time someone did, it was pity or fear that was in their eyes because they see me as you proclaim me. A curse. A seal. A restraint. But you know. Deep down, you remember what I actually am, don’t you?

spaceEven she didn’t know exactly what I was. She was rushed and panic when calling that spell, you know? She has this range and you were already at the edge, so she proclaimed the first one she could think of.”
He laughed bitterly and paused for a moment. “But you know why it seems to work, don’t you? You believed it.”

spaceThe voice was very clearly behind him now. Samuel turned sharply and stared with startled eyes at a large, rabbit-like figure. It’s body was lined with a flowing golden thread while the space within it was empty and vacant save for a soft and light mist. On its muzzle, two long whiskers flowed softly in an invisible breeze and a nose twitched. Where the eyes were, two vibrant, piercing red lights hovered, gazing at him.

spaceSamuel frowned and furrowed his brows. His mind tumbled as he strained to sort out what was happening. Though it felt impossible, everything he had said all seemed to point to one insane idea, one that his mouth strained to say while his mind held the words back. Slowly, his mind released it's iron grip on his jaw, gradually embracing the impossible idea which strained to the truth.

    space“You’re. . . my seal?”

space “No. Well, yes and no. Samuel, you cannot tell me that you don't remember now. You've seen me again, you've heard my voice. Doesn't any of this ring any bells?” When he spoke, the mist in his head swirled faster as though air were being pushed through it, even though he had no distinct mouth.

    space“I don't recognize you. . .”

spaceHe sighed, long and heavy, the red lights narrowing and flickering out for a moment before returning once more. “You remember the conditions of your hatching?” Samuel did not respond and the red lights narrowed. “Fine. I will explain everything to you, I guess. Your parents were normal, painfully and completely normal. No mutations, no magic, no nothing. They were at the bottom of the pot, the old burnt garbage no one wanted. So, they turned to Soma. The morons asked for her to give them a blessed and powerful child. She agreed and when the mother laid an egg, they brought it to Soma. The witch took it within her home. She sent them away, instructing them to return in a week. They obeyed. While they were gone, she sought out one of the ancients. A wingless, long bodied dragon with whiskers, much alike yours. She killed it, bottling its blood and ripping a fang from its jaw. She then punctured a hole on your shell and poured the blood within. Your body and powers were mutated and brought forth by my blood and fang." As he spoke, his tone became gradually more and more irritated and bitter. The mist which made up his body swirled a little faster and his eyes blazed, seeming to grow brighter. "You should be thankful for me, you know, instead of treating me like a disobedient child would to a nagging parent!”

spaceSamuel glared at the creature before him. “So. How do you know all of this, then? The conditions of my birth? If you were dead, how do you know what she did to your blood?”

spaceThe rabbit growled, deep and low, and rolled his eyes. “How do you think I am standing in front of you right now? When one of my kind is killed, we stick around who killed us. It’s kind of a grudge thing. My spirit followed Soma and watched what she did. At first I wanted to kill you, but I changed my mind as you were innocent in all this. So, in addition to the physical rarity my blood gave you, I merged my soul with you in a type of seal, granting you my powers as well.” It held up a paw swiftly and lifted its head, predicting his next question. “And yes, I know I appear as a rabbit. There were twelve of my kind, each being a zodiac. Lucky for you I just so happened to be the rabbit, so my soul takes the form of it.”

spaceSamuel frowned. “This still doesn’t make sense. Why did Soma’s seal make you appear on my side if you had been with me all this time?”

space “Now these are good questions! Remember, I am the reason you have any power at all. Soma placed a seal to lock away your power, which means she is locking away me. In order to do that, we would need to be separated. Me appearing on the outside of your body's a sign that it worked, though not fully. I managed to slip some magic to you before I was completely sealed.”

spaceSamuel took a moment to think, turning over the new information in his head. Slowly, he lifted his eyes back to the rabbit with a frown. “This still changes nothing. Your lecture may be great in your mind, but it does not change the fact that without you, I cannot protect her.”

spaceThe rabbit sighed and shook its head, its ears swaying. “Well now. You see, there is this huge difference between cannot and will not." He paused, gazing firmly at Samuel as if to drive the point in before continuing. "Samuel. The battle with Akela, that mercenary, and the battle with Asteria herself. You had no allies. June could not help you for you did not train her. You were alone with what little power you had, and yet you won. Perhaps you did gain wounds, but June cared for them. Now that she knows how to fight, you two can make it together.

space"But you let one foe break your spirit! Takaeo! The viscet cursed to become a giant wolf! Just because your foe towers over you, you turn tail and run?! Samuel! You carry my blood in your veins and my soul on your side! What you do is a representation of me as well, and we are no spitting, trembling coward!”
The rabbit had steadily grown in size and brightness as he spoke, as though his anger were taking a physical form in his body. He took a moment and breathed deeply, his size shrinking down again and growing softer once more as a wave of calm passed over him. “Samuel. You know who I am, now. Yet you do not seem to know yourself or your abilities. That female back there. She called you a father figure to June, yet you denied it because the only father figure you know is one you see once a week or one who looks down at you sternly. I do not often like to make accusations like this, but Samuel you are a moron for leaving that girl. Besides, do you really believe that Kas is someone to be trusted? Perhaps the girl trusted her quickly, but she is naive and young.” The rabbit leaned in, its eyes narrowed to him and its ears slowly raised. “You’re just going to trust her to someone you hardly know?”

spaceThe spirit vanished and Samuel’s paws drifted to his sides as he checked to ensure the marking was still there. His mind circled what the rabbit had said. Despite their conversation, he still felt inadequate in protecting June, but it was the last sentence which disturbed him and shook him to the core.

spaceSamuel looked up at the mountains. They were not too far, perhaps a thirty minute walk. He began walking back, then slowly his pace grew faster as his paws struck the ground with more force. Faster and faster until he was sprinting to the mountains, his ears high and his mouth open slightly. He had turned his back on June, but perhaps she would accept him again and complete the journey with him. He wanted to see her eyes light up, he wanted to see her happy in the East. This journey was for him as much as it was for her. It wasn’t one or the other, it was both. Both needed to be free, and to do it they needed to be together.

spaceHe reached the mountain base within five minutes and began moving up it, but stopped after a few moments. Kas and June’s scent was fresh, but it did not climb the mountain. Instead, their scent was stronger towards the West. Samuel furrowed his brows and jogged on the trail, beginning to follow it. “Why would they. . .”

spaceThe rabbits words shot to his mind with the force of a train and Samuel’s eyes widened. He broke into another sprint, following their trail with precision. He thundered along, his feathers rising as he did.

spaceIt did not take long for the two to come into sight.

spaceJune turned back and her eyes widened. Her mouth opened, but Samuel spoke first. It was a roar, one that started as a deep snarl and exploded into a loud bellow.

    space“Kas!”

spaceThe female glanced over her shoulder, watching him with an unamused eye.

spaceSamuel lunged at her but was flung to the ground by the arrival of a barrier. He struck the ground on his shoulder first then rolled before getting his paws beneath him.

spaceKas turned to face him, her expression dark and unamused. “Samuel, what are you doing?”

spaceSamuel rose from the ground, his lips curling into a snarl. “Why are you taking her West?”

spaceKas studied him deeply, as though she were tossing her options in her head. Slowly, that ominous expression faded away, shifting into loose smile as she began to laugh.

space“Oh, what’s the point anymore? I’m not even going to bother making up lies to entertain you now.” Her expression shifted into one more stern, though the smile remained. “Samuel. You are both stupid and intelligent at the same time, and it’s fascinating. You see, He sent me to these mountains to kill you and take her by force, but then things worked out in a strange way and you just handed her on over. I guess I should thank Takaeo, then. If he hadn’t tried to kill you first, I wouldn’t have had such an easy job!”

spaceSamuel snarled, his mane bristling. His eyes darted to June for a moment and concern grew in his heart. He needed to win this fight and keep her safe, but he knew nothing of this foe, and June was too close to her for comfort.

space“Well, Samuel. I guess I should be happy that you changed your mind. This job would have so boring if you didn’t. Now, I get to kill you and eat your heart, as well.”

spaceSamuel lifted his head slightly and growled, his brows furrowed.

spaceKas laughed lightly at his expression. “See, that’s my payment. I bring Libra the kid, I get to eat your heart. It’s how I get stronger. I gain your power through that, and from what Libra told me, eating your heart might just be worth it.”

spaceShe crouched, but paused and glanced back at June. The viscling stared at Kas in horror. Kas turned her head back and smirked at June and Samuel’s hackles rose. “Well now, got to keep you from scampering off during this, don’t I? Besides, healers are such a pain in fights.”

spaceKas turned suddenly, smacking June with her tail and sending the viscling back several feet. When June caught herself and began to stand, a barrier of red appeared around her, keeping her crouched on the ground. June’s eyes darted to Samuel and the male bristled, anger causing his blood to rush in his ears.

space“Now that she’s out of the way, let’s have some f-”

spaceSamuel turned sharply, whipping his tail to her.

spaceKas ducked swiftly then rose again, glowering at him and still grinning.

space“Oh, and just one more thing, Sammie. The name is Kasdeya, not Kas.”

spaceSamuel snarled and rushed the female, but by his second step magic roared to life around them, radiating from Kasdeya. Pulsing flames rose from the ground, eating away at the life of the grass and reaching up with crooked fingers to seize the sky. Samuel took a step back to avoid the flames and growled, his ears pinned back.

spaceSamuel’s ear flicked and he moved swiftly to the side, narrowly dodging a projectile of silver magic which clung to a stone behind him and sizzled, burning away the rock.

spaceKasdeya laughed and Samuel’s body tensed as the ground beneath him trembled slightly. He looked down then quickly sprang back as a stone spire shot from the ground, knicking his nose and lip. He moved backwards for several steps as more spires rose following his trail, then he turned right and spun, smashing his tail against the standing spires and breaking them. A final spire rose, jutting out a meer two inches from Samuel, but he stood his ground, his eyes locked onto Kasdeya.

space“Looks like you’ll need more than just the basics. That’s good,” Her voice was calm and relaxed, almost even amused.

spaceThe flames around her roared as they stretched higher, rising far above Samuel’s head as they strained for the sky. Samuel had only a moment to raise his paws, the scales on them hardening and expanding, before Kasdeya burst from the flames and collided with him.

spaceHe slid back a few feet, his paws raised in an “X” fashion to protect his chest as Kasdeya pushed him back. Her eyes flashed and Samuel quickly maneuvered to the left, flinging her away from him as he did. She stumbled a few steps then turned sharply to face him.

spaceSamuel spun, swinging his tail up towards her head. As it moved through the air, Kasdeya raised a paw. An explosion burst from her palm, striking his tail a moment before it could hit her, and the momentum of the blast sent his tail the other way.

spaceSamuel clutched his teeth as he steadied himself. Behind him, his tail burned in agony and he could feel blood forming on it’s end.

spaceHe growled and rushed forward, swinging a paw to slash at her neck. She smirked and lifted a paw, striking the bottom of his and sending it back. As the arm which had been rushing towards her moved away, his other arm moved forward and up swiftly. His claws grazed her skin, cutting cleanly and shallowly and sending slivers of feathers into the air.

spaceKasdeya’s eyes widened, then narrowed. She moved her arm swiftly and struck him on his temple.

spaceSamuel’s head jerked to the side and he used the momentum from her punch to spin, striking his tail against her side. It roared in pain upon the collision, but he fought to ignore it as he completed the turn, facing her once more as she stumbled to regain balance.

spaceSamuel moved to attack her, planning to slash her neck with his claws, but she acted first. A powerful pulse of purple magic ripped from her paws, hitting him square in the chest and sending him back several feet. When he finally caught his balance, projectile of blue magic flashed towards him. He moved his head to the side and the magic passed him, slicing into the side of his neck and drawing forth blood.

spaceSamuel raised his paws in defence as Kasdeya slammed into him and released another pulse of purple magic. His guard broke and she seized the opportunity, laying hold of his arms and driving her claws into his skin and pressing down, forcing Samuel to slowly buckle to the ground. Samuel snarled and grabbed her arms, clawing at her in attempts to force her to release him.

spaceKasdeya smirked at Samuel, her breathing more forceful than before but her body mostly unharmed, save for the small scratch he had made. “Well now, I am honestly disappointed. I wasn’t even trying! No wonder why you wanted the girl to go with someone stronger! You wouldn’t make it three more steps up that mountain if this is all you can do!”

space“Sam!” Both viscets looked over to June, who crouched in her cage of red magic, staring at Samuel with fear in her eyes.

    spaceSlowly, Kasdeya grinned.

space“You know, I’ve been thinking. Libra doesn’t need a little healer, does he? The guys practically untouchable.” She paused and laughed shortly, her eyes gleaming with confidence and malice. “At least, not by this world. Maybe I’ll have her heart as well, an appetizer, you know?”

spaceWithin the barrier, a small spire of red magic began to rise from the ground, angled for June’s throat. The viscling squeaked and tried to move away, but the barrier kept her in place. Samuel’s eyes widened as he stared at her.

space“I guess I could use a small boost to healing magic. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure she dies, but only after watching you die first.”

spaceThe spire continued rising and slowly pressed against the visclings skin. June called for help and the sound rattled every nerve and muscle within Samuel’s body. His sides suddenly burned, but he cared little for it. Adrenaline was thrown into his bloodstream and coursed through his body like a raging wildfire. Everything within his body was now screaming. Calling, shouting, bellowing, echoing, screeching. All for her blood to spill on the ground.

spaceSamuel’s expression darkened and twisted, rage morphing it into one of a blazing desire for blood. Slowly, his head turned away from the viscling to face Kasdeya directly. The pain he felt before was gone, numbed by the screaming. His paws adjusted on her arms and his claws drove into her skin. Slowly, he rose from his forced crouched position. As he did, he slowly forced Kasdeya down.

spaceThe female’s grin fell and her expression turned serious.

spaceOnce Samuel’s feet were firmly beneath him, his paws moved swiftly, slipping from her grasp and moving under her arms before colliding with her chest and sending her back several feet. The rage within Samuel echoded and bounced off of every muscle and nerve, shrieking in every cavity and rushing through his trachea to rip from his mouth. Samuel let it and released a roar which seemed to come from the very depths of the world. His sides burned for a moment, then sudden relief and energy flooded his system, as though he had just escaped from countless chains.

spaceSamuel rushed the female, pulling his arm back to strike her. As he did, warmth flooded his paw. He swung his arm forward and made contact with her jaw, and the flames which had formed around his paw exploding upon contact. She stumbled to the side and her pupils condensed into sharpened, malicious, excited slits.

spaceKasdeya turned sharply, swinging her tail high in the air as flames began to course its feathers.

spaceSamuel snarled venomously as he leaned his head back and reached out with his other paw, tapping her tail as it moved towards him then ducking his head a moment later. The flames on her tail crystallized and froze and when her tail struck a nearby rock, the ice which had formed on it shattered off like glass.

spaceKasdeya snarled through her smile and moved forward sharply, slamming her shoulder into his chest. Water formed around her free paw and she moved it upward swiftly, striking Samuel’s muzzle with her pad. The moment she made contact, the water rushed forward and expanded, swarming Samuel’s head.

spaceThe male’s fangs bared as he glared at Kasdeya. He struck her across the neck and at the base of her throat at the same time, holding his breath as he did. Kasdeya remained firm as Samuel continued to strike her, his tail moving beneath him and coiling on the ground as he did. Once it was in position, Samuel kicked from the ground, putting his full weight temporarily on his tail, and kicked Kasdeya firmly in the throat with his hind paws.

spaceKasdeya staggered back and the bubble around his head popped. Samuel took a heavy breath, then released it as his hind legs rested on the ground again and his tail uncoiled behind him.

spaceKasdeya stared at him, then released a short, menacing chuckle. She slammed a hind paw on the ground and roared. As she did, the ground to her sides cracked and split while flames broke their way through the world's crust.

spaceSamuel slammed a hind paw on the ground and a large, arched wall of stone shot from the ground before him as Kasdeya sent her flames forward. To either side of the wall, massive flames shot past, ripping through the wild jungle behind him.

spaceAs the flames onslaught slowed, Samuel rushed forward, sprinting up the rock wall and jumping from it. In the air, he roared loudly and began to maneuver his body, angling his tail to strike her head. As he moved through the air, electric energy began to ripple to life, rushing down his whiskers and flinging off, sizzling, into the atmosphere around him. He moved his body sharply as he neared the ground and his tail made contact with the females head.

spaceKasdeya stumbled to the side for several steps and snarled, her smile now gone. She faced him, her feathers raised and her paws flexed.

spaceSamuel landed and immediately turned to face her. His paws moved swiftly as he charged the female, his magic sparking to life and the electricity on his whiskers still hissing and spitting in anger.

spaceKasdeya’s eyes narrowed and she moved her paw sharply through the air, cutting it and sending out a wide projectile of searing magic. Samuel ducked his head and swept upward, striking her on the bottom of her jaw and sending her head up and back.

spaceKasdeya clenched her teeth and struck Samuel’s shoulder, releasing a blast of magic as she did. Still, Samuel attacked.

spaceStriking with and without magic, rage powered his muscles as he struck her repeatedly, seeking only blood and death. He was blinded to her attacks, adrenaline pressing him forward like a train.

spaceSlowly, her defenses began to drop and Samuel saw an opening.

spaceHe pulled his paw back and flexed it, preparing to slash her throat. As his paw moved forward, however, he faltered.

spaceHer face was no longer her own. Before him, shocked and angry, was Asteria, staring at him as though he were a traitor.

spaceAs Samuel gazed at the vision, searing pain ripped across his own neck. He clenched his jaw and stumbled back, the vision gone and replaced with Kasdeya, her paw covered in blood and a cruel, determined gleam in her eyes.

spaceThe adrenaline and rage was gone from him, the magic faded from his exterior, and the toll of the battle rushed over him all at once, causing his legs to shake and bringing him down to one knee. His paw rested on his throat where he felt the warmth of blood seep between his fingers. His body trembled and screamed as every cut she had made and each blow she delivered cried out its agony to his mind.

spaceKasdeya released a heavy breath and adjusted her feathers with a paw, the gleam still in her eyes. “Well, you did put up a fight, but I am not surprised by the results. I’ve killed countless creatures, viscet and others alike. You were bound to fall eventually.”

spaceHer muscles tensed as she prepared to finish him off, but a sudden flash of odd light behind her caused her head to whip back and her attention to shift. Behind her, a viscet in odd armor stood boldly. His eyes drifted to Samuel for a moment before remaining locked on Kasdeya.

space“My King, you need to return at once. They are seeking your thrown in your absence.”

spaceKasdeya’s expression twisted into one of annoyance and blood lust. Her eyes rested on Samuel and she scowled. “Consider yourself lucky. No mission, no matter the heart, is worth losing my thrown to scum.” Her tail flicked sharply and she vanished with the messenger.

spaceWhen she was gone, her magic left with her, freeing June.

spaceThe viscling ran to Samuel, healing ball in paw, and she quickly pressed it against his throat. Samuel’s ear flicked as he felt the skin and muscle pull themselves together again.

spaceJune’s attention began to turn to his other wounds, but he placed a paw firmly on her shoulder to stop her.

    space“Sam?”

    space“No.”

spaceHe lifted himself from the ground, his wounds hissing as he did. Once upright, he turned to the viscling and beckoned Eastward.

space“Save your strength for the journey, I will make due.”

spaceJune hesitated, then walked East, Samuel trailing close behind.

spaceIt had been nearly two hours since they ventured out, climbing the mountain from its base once more. As they trekked through the grass and rocks, the two remained silent, Samuel listening intently for foes while June’s senses remained within as she thought deeply.

spaceAs they climbed higher, snow began to dapple the mountain and the temperature dropped. Their breaths were now visible and their paws carried small pieces of frost and snow, dropping some and picking up others with each step.

    spaceFinally, June broke the silence.

    space“Sam, can we talk now?”

spaceSamuel grunted, the paused and looked down at her. “Yes, June. We can talk now.”

space“You used magic in that fight, didn’t you? At first I thought it was Kas - er, Kasdeya’s but then that stone wall came up and-”

space“Yes, June. I used magic in that fight.”

spaceJune’s eyes sparkled and she stared up at him. “So the seal is broken?”

spaceSamuel’s eyes drifted to his side. Sure enough, the rabbit remained in mid leap, but now it was different. Segments of the golden markings which made up its frame were broken or missing, leaving open patches.

space“Well, I’d say it’s more fractured than broken.”

space”And unfortunately, it will stay like that. At least I can give you my power freely, now.”

spaceSamuel’s eyes flicked to June, but she did not seem to hear the rabbit’s voice. She was lost in thought, her eyes angled to the sky.

spaceSamuel nodded slowly and continued walking, June springing to life and following after him a moment later.

space“So, what does this mean? Like, does this change anything in our journey? Are you going to go back and fight Libra with your magic, or are you going to track down Kasdeya?”

space“I am doing neither of those. Our journey has not changed, we press on to the East.”

spaceJune frowned and tilted her head, stopping. “But, don’t you want to do something? Samuel, sure you lost to her that time but you know her powers now and her tactics! You can fight her again, and win! And you can go up against Libra and take him down! You can free hundreds- no. Thousands of lives, viscling and viscet included! Don’t you want to help? Don’t you want to do something for the West?”

spaceSamuel sighed, turning to face her. He knew the viscling wouldn’t understand, she was too young and saw the world like a comic book rather than the tragedy it truly was. Libra had dominated the West, there was no one there to stop him, and the Guardians were hiding away in the East, seeking for guidance and power after their past failure against him. He was raised beneath Libra, he knew his strengths well and knew of his weaknesses also, but even with that knowledge and the power of an ancient dragon coursing through his veins, he knew he was no match for Libra. No one was, as that wretched magic ripped apart everything it touched - stone and flesh alike. Going back to fight Libra would be a pointless suicide mission and his death would only dishearten others, not start a riot against him.

space“June, listen. I cannot fight Libra, especially not now. We go to the East, that is our primary concern at the moment.”

spaceJune hesitated and looked back at the raging storm of black sand which covered Libra’s castle. “Okay. . . But we will think of something when we get there? You’ll eventually go back and fight him, right? You won’t let him win the world, right?”

spaceShe turned her gaze to him and stared at him with pleading eyes. Samuel found it hard to meet her gaze.

space“We will see how things go.”

spaceJune hesitated, then nodded, accepting his words. She walked on and Samuel followed after her, relieved that the subject had been dropped.

space“So, did you find out why the seal is a rabbit?”

space“Yes, but it isn’t easy to explain.”

space“Well, we have time don’t we?” June’s eyes drifted to the mountain peak which seemed so far away.

spaceSamuel sighed and shrugged. “Not enough.”

spaceJune frowned at him then slowly looked to the ground and Samuel felt a pang in his chest.

space“Well, I guess we may have enough time.” June’s eyes darted up to him and she grinned in excitement. “So, I was born from two parents who had no mutations. They were bottom class and wanted a child that would help them change their condition and the way others view them, so they turned to Soma-” Samuel paused. Soma didn’t spend too much time around the visclings, they had only met her twice before Samuel and Asteria left with June. “You do remember Soma, right?”

    space“Yeah, I remember her.”

space“Good. Well, Soma told them she would help them if they lived with her and Libra so they could survey the child and ensure it was healthy. They agreed and, when an egg was laid, they took it to Soma.”

    space“How was the egg laid?”

    space“The rectum.”

spaceJune paused, pondering the word he had said and trying to determine what it meant. Slowly, the work clicked to the body part and her eyes widened slightly. “Oh.”

space“Soma took the egg and sent the parents to rooms in the facility where they would live. Before the egg was laid, she had tracked down an ancient creature. A dragon. She killed him and collected his blood and a single fang.”

spaceJune shuddered and stared at him in horror. “Why?”

space“Just listen. She took the dragon’s fang and made a hole in the egg, then poured the dragon’s blood into it.”

    space“That can’t be sanitary.”

space“It likely wasn’t. When the egg hatched, I happened. A viscet with dragon-like traits and magic.”

spaceJune frowned. “Wait, so how does this apply to the rabbit on your side?”

    space“June.”

    space“Yes?”

space“Just listen.” Samuel sighed, shaking off the small amount of frustration which had been growing, and continued with his story. “Now, the dragon she killed was affiliated with a zodiac animal; specifically the rabbit. When she poured his blood into the egg, he became fused with me. When we were running and Soma cast that seal, it was not on me specifically; after all, on my own I would have no powers or traits. I would just be a normal viscet. She sealed him. The seal pulled him from within and left him seared on my sides as a physical representation of the seal, and now, a mark of his power.”

    space”Poetic.”

    space“Woah. . .”

spaceSamuel’s ear flicked. “I can hear him from time to time now. He started talking to me after I had. . . After I left you with her. He talked sense into me and made me realize the mistake I had made.”

space“Right. Trusting strangers is too risky.”

space“No, June- well, yes but no. Trusting strangers is too risky, but my mistake was giving up and leaving you. We’ve made it this far, so we will cross that mountain. Together.”

spaceSlowly, June’s expression lit up and she grinned at him. “Yeah!” Her pace quickened, eagerness restoring her energy. A small, soft smile spread on Samuel’s mouth and he followed after her.

spaceThey trekked on up the mountain. Slowly, it became steeper and larger patches of snow painted the ground, white powder rising to June’s elbows. The viscling hopped with each step, trying to keep her belly from the snow but failing each time.

spaceSamuel watched her, partially amused, for a moment before scooping her up and setting her on his back. She curled up, snuggling against his mane and appreciating the warmth.

    space"Thank you, Sam!”

spaceSamuel nodded firmly and marched ahead, the crisp snow crunching beneath his paws. “So, June. What happened when I was gone? Why did you follow her down the mountain?”

space“Well, I woke up in the morning and she told me that you had left us. I was upset for a long time and didn’t want to go anywhere incase you changed your mind, so you could find us again. When I finally calmed down, she brought me up the mountain a little higher before stopping. She told me that the path we were taking was wrong and that we couldn’t cross the peak and we would have to go down to the base of the mountain to find another way. I followed her, mostly because I was too upset to oppose.”

spaceSamuel nodded slowly and his eyes turned to the peak. He knew Kasdeya was likely lying when she told June the peak could not be passed over, but a twinge of doubt and nervousness pricked his heart at the thought of her words being true.

space“Hey Sam, if you don’t mind me asking, what are your powers? You used fire and ice, and then the ground moved too.”

spaceSamuel shrugged. “Honestly, I was still learning all of them when we fled. The lightning at the end was new to me. Usually it is fire in one paw, ice in the other. The ground obeys my feet, the wind obeys my voice, and apparently I can generate electricity. Other than those, the only one I know of is the hardening, but you already knew about that one.”

spaceSamuel felt June’s weight shift to the side on his back. “Do you think I could learn more magic? More than just healing?”

space“It would not be unheard of.”

spaceSamuel pressed his paw down through the snow and stumbled as the ground he could not see dipped. He grunted and caught his balance then pressed on. June - who had dug her claws in to stay on his back - slowly relaxed, though her ears remained high.

space“Have you eaten anything since I was gone?”

space“Yeah, just a rabbit. Kasdeya had me hunt it before we left.”

    space“Good.”

space“How about you? Have you eaten anything at all?”

spaceSamuel paused, then shook his head. “I told you, I don’t need to.”

spaceJune frowned and leaned over, glancing down at the rabbit on his side. “Do you think that’s his fault?”

    space“Hm?”

space“Do you think the dragon is the reason you don’t need to eat or drink?”

spaceSamuel shrugged. He waited a moment, expecting the dragon to speak up in his mind, but nothing happened. “Well, it’s not impossible, I guess.”

spaceThey pressed on, exchanging small conversations about the snow, mountain, and the East. June shared her hopes and wishes about what life would be like and Samuel neither confirmed or rejected any of her suggestions.

spaceAs the hours passed, the mountains incline steepened and the snow became thicker. The sun sunk beneath the mountains, casting a long shadow over their heads. With the arrival of darkness, trouble came. Samuel could no longer the mountain properly or where the loose parts of snow and stone were. He moved slowly and silently, focusing strictly on climbing up the mountain and placing his paws properly, though he fell many times.

spaceSamuel growled as his foot slipped on an angled rock, slicing open his paw pad. He stumbled, then raised it, pressing the wound against the snow which surrounded them.

    space“Sam?”

    space“It’s okay, I’m fine.”

    space“No, Sam. . . There’s someone over there.”

spaceSamuel frowned deeply and looked to where June was pointing. In the distance, soft gold and red light flickered, illuminating the figure of a large viscet. Samuel’s hackles rose slowly. Now was perhaps the worst time for another challenger.

spaceHe thought for a moment to drop into the snow and hide, hoping the stranger would pass, but the plan crashed when the stranger called out to them.

space“Hey! Are you lost?” He paused a moment, then spoke up again. “If you’re heading to the fang peak, you won’t be able to scale that in the dark, plus a storms coming our way. Come over here, I’ve got a den you can take shelter in until the morning!”

spaceJune looked from the stranger to Samuel. “Sam, maybe he’s right. It is getting colder and this peak looks too steep to climb at night.”

space“Did you learn nothing about trusting strangers?”

space“Well, I did, but we don’t have any other choice at this moment, do we?”

spaceSamuel frowned. She was right. Their options were to either leave the stranger and remain out here, trying to climb a steep cliff in darkness with the risk of a storm coming, or to trust the stranger and follow them to a den to find shelter for the night. Samuel growled deeply and turned to face the stranger.

spaceThe viscet stood not too far off, the golden light still shining around them. Samuel took a moment, tossing the options in his head once more, then began walking over to the stranger. “We’ll take your offer. Stay there and I’ll be over soon.”

spaceSamuel maneuvered carefully through the snow, trying not to put too much pressure on his wounded paw.

spaceEventually he reached the stranger. He was a large male viscet with a brown coat of feathers and a mane which was made of fire. His paws were laced with long feathering, much like Junes, and his eyes gleamed with genuine concern. “Come, come. The den is up this way.”

spaceHe led them up the mountain and to a medium sized, cozy den. Within, a fire could be seen. Samuel slipped in and June sprang from his back, rushing to the fire and curling up quickly beside it to get warm. Samuel sat close by, his forepaws extended to the fire while he eyed the stranger.

spaceThe male viscet slipped into the den and sat across from them, his eyes resting on June for a particularly long time. Samuel bristled. “Alright, you two can get some sleep. I’ll wake you when the storm passes and dawn comes.”

spaceSamuel glanced down at June, who was already fast asleep by the fire. He frowned slightly. He hadn’t know just how exhausted she was. “I will not sleep. I will keep watch.”

spaceThe male shrugged. “Suit yourself.” He extended a paw to Samuel over the fire. “The name’s Shin r-” He paused for a moment. “Shin.”

spaceSamuel cautiously took his paw and shook it. “Samuel.”

spaceShin nodded and both dropped their paws. “So, you two are crossing the mountain?” Samuel nodded firmly. “Well, it must be quite the dangerous trek.” His eyes drifted to Samuel’s many wounds, the ones he had refused to let June heal.

    space“Indeed.”

space“Has she been safe? She didn’t get hurt, right?”

spaceSamuel frowned. “No, she has been safe.” His mind turned to his battle with Kasdeya and the red spire which threatened to pierce the visclings throat, but he mentally shook the thought away.

    space“That’s good.”

space“You seem quite relieved to hear that a stranger has been left unharmed.”

spaceShin paused, seeming startled by his question. Slowly, the tension he had faded and he released a soft breath. He looked to June once more, studying her face and breathing. As though on cue, the viscling released a soft snore. Shin’s mouth twitched into a smile, then fell back to a frown as he looked to Samuel.

space“I’ll be honest, I was shocked to see her. I never thought I would see her again.” He ran a paw through his burning mane and released a soft sigh. “I don’t know why I thought it was smart. . . All others before her had been taken as well, but for some reason I thought that. . . She might just be an exception of some sort.”

space“What are you implying.” Samuel glared at Shin from across the fire.

spaceShin sighed softly. “She’s my daughter. Haylee June Rei, right? My full name is Shin Rei. I raised her for almost a year before Soma found me and took her away.”

spaceSamuel frowned and studied the male. Though he did not believe him, or at least did not want to, his statement seemed accurate. The male knew her full name and their pelts were similar - warm chocolate feathers with large merle spots and soft feathering on their paws, and the pattern of their manes - though his was fire - appeared similar.

space“See, I’ve had three kids in total. The first was Akela, though she was adopted with Soma back when I first met her. When the witch took her and left, I realized what that meant and moved up here to hide from her. That’s where I met Pele and had Anahita. Things were great until. . . Well, until she wanted me to leave the mountain and go to her island to live with her. I wanted to, but I couldn’t. . . I had always hoped Akela would find her way out of that place and to me again. Pele grew furious and took Anahita away. Then, I met Aki and Haylee was born. . . She was wonderful, a perfect little ball of feathers and happiness. . . Then Soma found me again and she was taken away in the night.”

spaceSamuel’s expression did not change as Shin told his story. At the end, his eyes drifted to June.

space“Well, don’t get me wrong, though. Samuel, I would love nothing more than to have my daughter back again, to raise her and have one child grow up happily alongside me, for once, but. . . I’ve already failed her, you see? I’m not strong enough to protect her, and that was how she was stolen from me. You stole her from them, didn’t you? That’s why you’re wounded.” Slowly, he sighed and shook his head. “You know, even seeing you battered and bruised I can’t help but feel that you have already done so much better than I. You fight for her,” His eyes drifted to the faint wound on his neck. “Risking everything to keep her safe. . . Samuel. Please do this for me. Don’t tell her who I am, let her believe her father is somewhere in the West living his life, and that he wasn’t so cowardly as to give her up after finding her again. And, take care of her.”

spaceSamuel watched Shin in silence. He had no debt to this viscet, no reason to fulfill his request, yet he wanted to. He took a slow, deep breath and his eyes fell to the fire. “You know, Shin. I started this journey more for myself than anything else. She was the spark, yes, but I did not leave that place for her alone. All my time in there was spent wanting to achieve greatness in Libra’s eyes, to rise up the ranks and hold the position Soma did. To be honored by him. But, time after time he chose his blood over me and I was given responsibilities that, while honored by others, felt to be disgraces. I’ve lied to everyone I have met about this, time after time. I said that I left because that viscling helped me to realize how cruel Libra was, or I left because she deserved a better life, but it was truly frustration and pride that drove me away. I felt dishonored and aggravated by my constant busy work and wanted something more with my life.”

spaceShin frowned and watched Samuel, slowly beginning to rethink his decision.

space“My whole life, I have been something constant and predictable - a boulder being dropped into a river time after time. I was unchangeable, even by the one I cared for. After she died, though, that boulder cracked when it hit the water. My reasons changed, I no longer cared about my ranking in life or the honor I received, it was all worthless and meager. I no longer cared if I crossed that mountain to see the East or not. It all became about her. I was ready to die for her, I was ready to abandon everything for her, just to keep her safe. And I still am.” Samuel’s eyes rested on Shin. “I don’t know what I would have done if you said you wanted to keep her with you. But. . . I can say that I will keep your request. I’ll keep her safe, even after we reach the bottom of that mountain.”

spaceShin smiled slowly and his mouth opened, then closed as he nodded. “Thank you, Samuel. Now, what has my little girl done? What has she learned, what’s she like? I want to know everything about the viscet she is becoming.”

spaceSamuel nodded and began speaking of their journey and June’s growth and development along the way. He told fondly of her bravery and determination, even when he got tough to handle. He told how, when Asteria died, she was the one to lift him and help him press on though she was hurt as well. He told of her courage when Takaeo turned to strike her and about her skills and determination when hunting and fighting. As he told the stories, he became wrapped up within himself. It was as though Shin were not there anymore. All Samuel could see was June, curled up by the fire sleeping, and how big she had gotten.

spaceThe storm came at night and passed as the moon began to follow the sun behind its mountain shield to chase it out and begin dawn. Shin had fallen asleep and Samuel found where June got her snoring habits from.

spaceHe remained in the den, tending to the fire as it slowly fell into glowing embers. A soft breath escaped his lips and his eyes drifted to the outside. The sky was still dark, but the snow reflect more light, making the mountain side visible once more.

spaceSamuel stood and walked outside, careful to not disturb the others. Shin Rei’s den was on a small cliff, a flat of rock which rose up four feet from the snow covered mountain ground beneath it. The cliff jutted from the mountain like a toe nail, rooted to the massive stone behind it, and the den itself fed directly into the mountain. It was a good place to live, particularly when the snow would begin to melt.

spaceSlowly, he turned his eyes to the stars above. The sky was a mix of rich navy blues and vibrant pale silvery blues painted together like water color and dappled with countless of tiny stars. Though dark, it was light.

spaceHe stood in silence, watching the sky above, then slowly turned his gaze to the peaks. They stood against the sky like claws and fangs, reaching to pierce it. The thick snow upon them shimmered from the light of the descending moon, pulling them apart from the rest of the environment around them. They sang, echoing his name and calling him, promising that the journey was soon over.

spaceSlowly, his heart grew heavy and his eyes turned to the distant base of the mountain. He closed his eyes and felt the soft wind moving his feathers, while his mind circled thoughts of Asteria.

spaceA small sound pulled him from his trance and he looked back to watch June stretch and yawn dramatically before making her way to him.

space“He sure does snore a lot, doesn’t he?”

spaceSamuel’s lips twitched into a small smile. “Why are you awake so early?”

spaceShe shrugged and looked at him. “I couldn’t feel you near me anymore.”

spaceJune turned her head to where his was facing and frowned at the bottom of the mountain. “It’s still hurting you too, huh? Well, I guess it is insensitive of me to think that it wouldn’t be.”

spaceSamuel’s eyes trailed down to the base of the mountain once more. He stepped forward and crouched, then sat with his legs hanging over the edge of the small cliff. He patted the ground beside him and June padded over and sat beside him.

space“June, when I started this with you and her, I promised that all three of us would make it to the other side.” He sighed softly. Somehow, talking about this removed some of the weight from his chest. “Well, that promise isn’t entirely broken now. Though she does not stand with us physically, her memory is strong in our hearts, and through that we can carry her to the East. I know it’s easy to be sad about it, but you need to stay strong and press on. For her.”

spaceSamuel turned his gaze from the mountain base to June, who stared at him with a look of shock and confusion. He frowned at her and she tilted her head.

space“I’m sorry, but it’s just. . . you’re not exactly a poetic guy, but that was. . . almost poetic.”

spaceSamuel snorted and turned his head away and June laughed. She placed a paw on his arm and grinned up at him.

space“Don’t worry. I know. When I’m sad about it again, I will think of what you told me. We will carry her over the mountain together.”

spaceSamuel nodded slowly, his eyes gazing straight ahead. The two sat in silence, listening as the mountain birds began to wake from their slumber and sing. In the distance, a lithe creature stirred in the snow. June strained her neck to view the snow leopard as it emerged from its den and gazed over the West before looking down and moving swiftly down the steep mountain side to hunt and find water. Behind it, a squirrel scurried halfway down a tree. It saw the leopard, then Samuel and June, and quickly scurried back up the tree. As the moon fell and came to a rest behind the peaks and the sun arose in the distance, life arose with it and the mountain stirred and gleamed.

space“Good morning.” Shin Rei yawned as he spoke the first word, holding it out dramatically before releasing the second word with the sharp and rapid exhale that followed the yawn. June looked back and greeted him and Samuel nodded, his gaze still on the mountain side. “So, you two are going to be heading out, are you?”

space“Yep! We still have a whole half mountain to cover!”

spaceThe male laughed softly. “Well now, the East is actually at a slightly higher elevation than the West, and the Eastern side of the mountain is smoother than this, so I have no doubt that your trek will go well.”

spaceJune paused, glancing at Samuel, then turned back to Shin Rei and spoke. “Well, the problem with that is that fights are easier, for us and others, on smoother, sturdier land, so we will probably have some strong challengers, but we can take them!”

spaceEven as she said the last line, Samuel sensed the doubt in her words. Though the bleeding had stopped, his wounds were still present and restricting him. Fights would be made more difficult for him, yet he felt no fear or concern at the thought of it.

space“A-Are you sure you don’t want to stay here? It’s safe up here, and I am sure that Libra’s gang will just assume you’ve passed or something.”

spaceSamuel’s gaze drifted to Shin Rei and he frowned softly. He knew what the male was thinking and going through. He was scared for June, too. There was always a chance Samuel could fail or face a foe like Kasdeya. The female could have killed June with ease if she wasn’t preoccupied with fighting him.

space“Thank you for the offer, but Sam and I made a promise. We need to see the East, we need to live there and finally be free! We can’t do that if we hide on the mountain top.”

spaceShin Rei frowned softly and nodded. “Yes, I suppose you are right. Just stay safe, though. I’d hate to hear that anything happened to either of you.”

space“Don’t worry, we will be careful!”

spaceJune’s tail wagged eagerly and she turned to face Samuel. He nodded and stood, dusting off his feathers before turning to Shin Rei. “Thank you, Shin. For everything.”

spaceShin Rei nodded slowly, his eyes locked firmly on Samuel’s. “Of course. Anytime that you may be crossing these mountains, just look for me again, okay?”

spaceSamuel nodded and leaned down. “June, let’s go.”

space“Aw, do I have to ride on your shoulders again?”

space“Unless you want to slide all the way down the mountain.”

spaceJune promptly climbed his shoulder and sat on his scruff. Samuel stood and looked up at the peak. “Is this one safe to climb?”

space“Yes, but only in daylight. Just watch your footing and you will be fine.”

spaceSamuel nodded and hopped from the edge of Shin Rei’s cliff. His paws plunged into the snow and he flinched from both the cold and the scabbed wound on his paw pad. He trekked on through the snow, heading towards the peak, and glanced back. Shin Rei stood at the edge, watching them as they traveled on, his gaze filled with concern as he watched June. Slowly, Samuel turned his head away and focused on his climb. He had a bad habit of making promises, but he knew within his heart and soul that he could and would keep his promise made to Shin Rei.

spaceThe peak was steeper than it had appeared. The rocks inclined to what felt like a vertical climb. Samuel climbed with all limbs, tail included, and June clung to his neck, resting on his shoulders as he carried her up.

spaceAs he climbed, June took a look at the world behind them.

spaceLibra’s magic swarmed like angry bees, enveloping his castle in dark magic. Across the land, trees coated the ground, leaving only patches of land here and there, some larger and some smaller, of where civilizations had formed and had removed the trees to make way for their homes. The world she had known, the one she had lived many months within, was now far behind her, shrunken to the size of a doll house.

spaceShe turned her head away and rested it on Samuel’s shoulder, watching the snow pass by and slide as he climbed.

spaceSamuel focused on his ascent, scratching snow to the side and striking the stone with his paw to ensure he would have a firm grip. As focused as he was on the outside, his mind was waging a war.

spaceThe land he grew up in stared hard at his back, burning him with its eyes. Titles such as traitor, liar, coward, and hypocrite came to him like arrows, piercing his hide and tearing into his spine. The expression of Libra, enraged at his betrayal, and Soma, her fury masked by a wicked coolness as her spells came to mind, seared the back of his eyelids. However, the face which stung him the most was his own brothers.

spacePerun, the male viscet he grew up beside. He was back behind him, in that raging storm of dark magic and wrath, confused. He and Samuel were close, even up until he met Asteria. They shared everything together, even that which they were too scared to tell Soma and Libra of. He likely wondered why Samuel had left, why he didn’t take his own brother with him.

spaceSamuel clenched his jaw and grabbed firmly onto the peak with a paw. Why thoughts of his brother were coming to him now, after so long of traveling, he did not know. He pulled himself up, grabbing the peak with his other paw as he drew closer. Then, slowly, he lifted his whole body up and over. As his legs moved over the ledge and hit the ground, his grip was lost and he slid. June sucked in a sharp breath and tightened her grip on him as Samuel drove his claws into the ground and wrapped his tail end around the peak, stopping them. Both sat for a moment, breathing heavily for different and similar reasons. Slowly, Samuel lifted his eyes and gazed out over the East.

spaceThe land was exactly as the legends told: barren and dry. For nearly as far as he could see, dusty patches of cracked earth stretched, scattered with the occasional dead tree and bush, and with very few patches of grass freckled along the dead earth. He frowned, but pressed on.

space“So, this is it, huh? That’s the East. . .”

spaceSamuel nodded and glanced back at June, expecting to see disappointment and preparing to give her a lesson of not raising her hopes too high, but he froze up. Rather than sad or upset, her expression was filled with joy and relief, tears even forming in her eyes.

space“It’s. . . It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Look at that land. . .” Samuel frowned as June spoke, looking over the dry land. Perhaps they saw different things. “That is freedom, Sam. Pure, physical freedom.”

spaceSlowly, Sam felt his body relax as he realized why she was so happy. The land, though ugly and threatening, was more than just a place to live. It was the physical tool to break away from Libra. Within it rested the Guardians, the ones to fight Libra, and other powerful creatures which sought sanctuary and called this place home. The East was not a barren wasteland, but a sanctuary to all living things from evil.

spaceSamuel nodded softly and began to carefully make his decent. Just a few feet below he could see the ground level out to a nicer angle and he aimed to slowly get closer until he could jump with confidence. Step by step he moved, rocks sliding with each movement, until he finally felt close enough. He jumped from the peak and landed on the mountain a few feet below. He stumbled for a moment, then caught his balance and released a soft breath. He looked back at the peak which towered over them once more and released a sigh. The sun was on the other side now, casting long shadows upon them.

spaceSamuel turned from the peak and continued his decent. June shifted on his back, eyeing the ground.

space“Can I walk now? It’s not steep anymore.”

spaceSamuel nodded and the viscling jumped down from his back. He watched her for a moment as she stretched her legs. “Hey, June.”

space“Yeah?” She looked back at him and tilted her head curiously.

spaceSamuel knelt down and sat, facing the East, and gesture for her to come over. She obeyed and sat beside him. “I haven’t talked to you about everything yet. Are you doing okay?”

spaceShe nodded. “Yeah, I’m doing fine. I’m not hurt and I have a lot of energy, and I’m not hungry yet either.”

    space“That’s not what I mean.”

spaceSlowly, she frowned and gazed at him.

space“June, you learned that I was raised by those that imprisoned you. You watched me nearly kill a stranger, and you watched me kill a dear friend. You were almost killed by Takaeo, and you were almost taken back to Libra by Kasdeya.”

spaceShe nodded slowly and her gaze dropped to the floor. “Well, I mean. . . Mentally, I certainly have been better. You being raised by Libra and Soma didn’t really bother me, I already knew you worked for them since we first met so that fact didn’t change too much because you still gave them up. When you almost killed Fenris. . . I didn’t like that. It’s why I stopped you. We didn’t know him, he didn’t work with Libra, and he could have had a family or someone to go home to.

spaceThen. . . Asteria. . .” She fell silent and shifted her weight. Samuel was about to give her encouragement when she continued speaking. “I feel like you did what you needed to. Asteria was blinded by the fact that you had lied to her and she couldn’t overcome it. If you didn’t win that fight, then worse things might have happened. But. . . if you didn't kill her, then she would never stop. She would follow us, even to the East, and may have continued trying to steal your life until she won. . .

spaceWith Takaeo, I wasn’t all that scared. I was more scared for you than anything else, and his attack toward me happened so fast that I could barely process what had happened. Then, Kasdyea. . . We were both tricked by her. . . but it showed me a lesson about strangers and how some can act.

spaceI have been shaken, Sam. A lot of this stuff has scared me, terrified me even, but. . . I see you no different. Through it all you have been fighting endlessly, risking life and limb just so we can press on and find freedom. Seeing how you fight, Sam. Seeing your determination. . . It makes this journey easier to do.”

spaceSamuel studied her for a moment, then nodded slowly, his mind circling her words. Slowly, he knew what he ought to do. “June, Asteria betrayed us because I was too scared to tell her the truth. I always seem to be avoiding that. . . I just-”

space“I know, don’t worry. It can be hard sometimes.”

space“Well, yes. But June, I don’t want to hide anything from you.” He took a deep breath and met her eyes firmly. “I will tell you everything. Everything in the full truth of how it happened.”

spaceJune gazed at him, then smirked. “Well, sure! But, can we walk while you do?” Samuel blinked and pulled his head back, a little perplexed. “Sam, I think you are thinking that if I find out about everything then I will ask you to not come along because I’ll hate or fear you or something. But Samuel, the past does not always define us. Who you are is already shown to me, so whatever happened in your past won’t change any of that, I promise. So, let’s walk and talk. After all, the East awaits.”

spaceSamuel slowly smiled and nodded his head, rising. “Well, if you say so.” He gestured to the East with a paw and June trotted along, Samuel following after her.

space“So! Your egg was mutated with dragon blood by Soma and that’s how you got to look like that and how you have your powers, right?”

spaceSamuel nodded. “After I hatched, I was raised by Libra and Soma, only seeing my birth parents on weekends. They were nice viscets, but I will admit that I did not see them quite as family. I called them mom and dad, but that was because it was everyone’s request.”

space“Wow. . . So, that ended up being their deal? They practically gave you up just to have a strong child?”

space“Not exactly. They only agreed to me being raised down there, they never knew that I would be kept from them so often.” June frowned and Samuel paused for a moment, watching her. “This is how Soma is, it’s how she plays. They were fools to have approached her in the first place.” June nodded slowly, and Samuel continued. “Well, I was not raised alone by those two. Perun, the blood son of Libra and Soma and one who I consider my brother, was there as well. We spent much of our early lives together, training and learning, but as we grew bigger they separated us every other day to focus on training us in specifics. Libra taught us physical combat and Soma taught us to use and strengthen our magical abilities. Things were good up until one morning when I was training under Libra’s watch.

spaceHe took me to the training room with a new dummy which was able to strike back and left me to train. As I was training, I heard a voice shouting outside and paused. The voice came again, then someone spoke the rune to open my door. It was my mother. She moved towards me, her eyes filled with fear, and that is when Libra killed her.”

spaceJune stared at him with wide eyes. “Right in front of you?! Why?”

space“My mother had been the most upset about the conditions of how often I saw them. She told Libra that she was going to take me away and leave, then broke out while he was with me. Libra has no mercy for traitors.”

spaceJune frowned as she gazed at Samuel, but he gazed calmly at her and continued his story.

space“When he killed my mother, he asked me something. ‘What do you think the world is.’ I didn’t understand what he was talking about back then, and couldn’t answer.

spaceAfter my mother’s death I continued training. When I was able to stand on my own hindlegs, I trained directly with Perun and we learned how to fight together, boosting each other’s skills. They began to give us trials. Two that I particularly remember was one machine in a rhombus-like shape with a flat part on its front that would morph when activated, and a large dummy.

spaceThe dummy, Libra had me attack alone. He told me to strike it down as though it had made an attempt on Perun’s life. I did as asked, each blow being a fatal one, but stopped when blood began to pour from it.” June tilted her head and Samuel frowned, wondering for a moment if he ought to tell her this. He decided that the full truth was better than hiding some, and after the things she had witnessed on this journey this likely would hardly leave a mark on her mind. “My father had struck Soma after hearing of my mother’s death. As punishment, he was placed into a magic dummy. When the dummy was hit, the blow would transfer to him. Those killing blows, though they may have been to a dummy, were all sent through straight to my father.

spaceLibra told me the truth of it and I did not respond. I didn’t know how, and I didn’t have much of a bond with my father, either. We continued on with our training as normal again, but something began to change in me.” Samuel smirked at June who tilted her head. “You can’t tell me you thought I was always so gruff and short my entire life, can you? Before the death of my parents, I was a lot like you.”

spaceSlowly, June frowned and Samuel’s smile fell with it. She looked down at her paws, then back at him and nodded for him to continue, though it seemed as though something were on her mind.

space“Soon after that, Libra moved Perun and I to his main facility and gave us jobs. We started at the same position: simple soldiers, but rose up the ranks quickly together, gaining more favor from Libra and gaining more power with it. Then, Asteria arrived. I met her and we did anything but hit it off right away. In fact, I met her and she fought me instantly for no reason at all. I defeated her and grew angry, but almost instantly her attitude towards me changed to one of fascination and I found myself having a semi-stalker. Everywhere I went, she always seemed to be right behind me.

spaceEventually, I began to try and get to know her, and we grew to become close friends. Unfortunately, this friendship pushed Perun and I further apart. As he continued to rise in favor and power, I rose slowly, distracted by Asteria. We hardly saw each other anymore, but each time we did Perun treated me as a close brother. He shared everything with me, he was always honest.”

    space“And you?”

spaceSamuel frowned. “I shared many things with him, but not everything. Perun. . . he had the same thoughts as Asteria and I. He felt that the kidnapping of visclings with weak magic went too far and he had doubts planted in his mind about Soma and Libra. He told me that the things they sent him outside to do were cruel and merciless, and he felt as though he were simply a dog of war. When I met you and Asteria and I made our plan, I told Perun nothing of it.”

spaceSlowly, June’s mane bristled. “Why? He’s your brother! Don’t you want to see him free again?!”

space“Of course I do! You just don’t understand.”

space“Then explain it to me. Why did you leave him behind? He could have come with us, he could have been safe!”

space“If Perun had come with us then there would be no safe place!” Samuel shouted, his own feather’s rising. June was stabbing at a very sensitive wound, and his nerves were on high end as anger spiked and jerked about in his chest. He took several deep breaths, calming himself forcefully. “If Perun had joined us, Libra himself would have come for us. He is their son by birth, he carries their magic and has the potential to even surpass them. If Perun came along, Libra would enter the East with his armies to get him back.”

spaceJune scowled. “Why are you so afraid of Libra?! I bet you and Perun could have killed him with ease! Perun carries his magic, as you said, so he’d know it’s weakness, and you have so many powers that I can’t list them on a single paw! Besides, you’re powerful! And I am willing to bet that he is too, so why do you get so scared at the mention of fighting Libra?!”

spaceSamuel growled. “That is not your business, June.”

spaceJune released an exasperated groan and Samuel’s eyes snapped to her. She rolled her eyes, moving her head dramatically with the gesture, and marched ahead. “When we met the guardians, maybe they can talk some sense into you and bring you to the fight. Maybe then they can actually win.”

    spaceSamuel snorted and marched along.

spaceJune was silent for some time as they walked, then she began speaking again. “I just don’t get it. You were raised by him, so you know his skills and powers and strategies. You would be able to overpower him, surpass the master and stop his reign of terror. Yet you run from a fight with him and brush off any topic about it.”

space“I do not wish to speak of this any longer.”

space“No! I want to hear it. Why are you so afraid?!”

    space“June,”

space“Why are you always running from him?!”

    space“June.”

space“Why are you too terrified to even think about fighting?! If Libra came after us, would you even try to protect me?!”

space“June!” Samuel shot to her, his voice in a roar as his rage pulsed. June cowered back in shock and stared at him with wide eyes. “I said I am done with this topic. We speak of it no more, do you understand?”

spaceJune nodded slowly and Samuel snorted and moved away, walking down the mountain in silence with June walking behind him. A pang of guilt struck his heart, but his anger kept his mouth shut.

spaceSilence hung heavy between them as they made their way down the mountain. The snow thinned out, then faded to grass as they grew closer to the mountain base. The trees began to dry and thin and the ground grew harder beneath their paws.

spaceAbove them, the birds grew quiet as the morning left. The sky was bright and few clouds floated within it. The sun hovered above them, casting their shadows towards the West.

spaceJune watched her shadow as she walked, observing how the blob moved to mimic her steps. She frowned and opened her mouth to speak, taking in a breath first, but paused and held it for a moment as she noticed that Samuel had stopped.

spaceHe stood stiffly, his feathers slowly raising and his muscles tense, his eyes locked onto something ahead of them. June felt a pit in her stomach as she looked up slowly to see what had him so rattled. Before them stood a mostly white viscet with a dark muzzle, chest, and belly. His face bore a red-orange and yellow-orange mask dappled with soft yellow, a marking of similar color resting on his shoulders and back and fading to life on his tail. On his elbows, legs, and cheeks long feathers moved slightly in the soft wind. On his shoulders, a large black feather marking stood out against the orange like a bat on gold.

spaceJune frowned and looked to Samuel. She did not recognize this viscet, but he certainly did.

space“Brother.” The stranger spoke first and Samuel’s feathers ticked upward ever so slightly. The male smiled softly, his expression mostly sad. “So, this is what you’ve been up to, huh?”

spaceSamuel frowned and his body slowly relaxed. “Perun, I. . .” His voice dropped.

space“You don’t need to apologize, you know.” Perun turned his gaze to June. “Ah, so she’s the one you wanted to rescue? You did good, brother. I remember seeing her here and there, she had no place under Libra’s thumb.” His eyes returned to Samuel and he released a long, soft breath. “Why do you look at me like that?”

spaceSamuel hesitated, unsure of what to say.

space“Ah, you think I am going to fight you?” Perun laughed softly and shrugged. “I mean, it is why I was sent here, but. . .” Slowly he looked back over at the East and smiled. “I just don’t feel like a fight right now. Especially not one with my brother.”

space“Come with us!” June spoke up and sprang forward. Perun’s head snapped towards her and he gazed at the viscling with an expression that was hard to read. “Come with us to the East! You can live in peace there, without Libra and Soma.”

spaceSlowly, a smile grew on Perun’s face once more. “Well, then. You sure are a sweetheart, but. . .” His eyes flickered to Samuel, then back to June. “Judging by his expression, he told you what he thinks would happen if I did. Libra growing furious and going to the East with his armies to drag me back home. It’s more likely than you’d think. So, to protect you, and all others in the East, I’m going to have to decline your offer.”

spaceJune frowned slowly and gazed at him with heartbroken eyes. Perun smiled crookedly, forcing the gesture, then turned to Samuel and began walking to his brother.

space“You’ve been beaten pretty badly, huh? They all look to be healing well though, and it looks like you finally cracked that seal. That’s good, you’re nothing without your magic.” Perun joked at him and smirked. Slowly, Samuel began to loosen up. “So, listen. You and I know Libra won’t really stop. He won’t come here himself, but he will keep sending soldiers. . . so long as he thinks that you are alive.”

spaceSamuel frowned as Perun reached out and touched the mostly healed wound on his neck. Carefully, he drove a claw into it until blood leaked out. June gasped and began to run over, but Samuel held a paw to stop her.

spacePerun lifted his other paw and focused. A moment later, dark red sandy magic sparked to life in his paw. He moved it close to Samuel and it soaked up the exposed blood quickly before he dispelled it. Perun stepped back and watched Samuel in silence. “Alright. This should be enough to convince him.” He patted Samuel on the shoulder and began to walk Westward. “You take care of yourself, alright? Her too.”

space“Wait, where are you going?!” June spoke up, panic in her voice.

space“Leave him, June.” Samuel’s voice was heavy and he turned his head back to watch his brother as he left. “Perun,” Perun turned back and looked at Samuel. “You stay safe, too.”

spacePerun nodded and smiled. “Always. It was nice to meet you, June. Make sure my brother takes care of himself, alright? I’ll see you guys again. One day.” Magic stirred to life at his paws and exploded around him, engulfing him then vanishing into hundreds of sparks. Perun was gone.

spaceSamuel gazed at where he stood for a moment, then turned back and began walking. “Come.”

space“So, that was Perun?” Samuel nodded. “What did he do?”

space“He took evidence of my death to give to Libra.”

spaceJune frowned and tilted her head. “Wait, that’s enough to convince him?”

space“Perun is quite skilled with magic, and Soma taught him many skill and tricks to do with blood. He will be able to deceive Libra with ease.”

spaceJune frowned and looked down as she walked, thinking about what had happened.

spaceAhead of her, Samuel walked in silence. His heart felt lighter, oddly, and a new type of energy drove his steps. Though it felt like a goodbye, seeing and speaking to Perun seemed to restore him again and give him his energy back. While the guilt of having to leave his brother behind was ever present, he felt that frog in his throat slowly begin to make its way out and allow him to breath deeply again.

spaceAs each step was taken, the mind of Samuel kept turning and cycling, driven to thought by the arrival and leaving of his brother. Perun had grown up with him, the two were nearly inseparable in childhood. With age, the roots of trees sowed by new relationships and different paths slowly split them apart and made a great divide between the two brothers. Deep down, Samuel knew he would have fought Perun. If his brother had decided to attack, Samuel would have struck back to defend June. However, to kill Perun. . . it was a thought that could not touch his mind or be considered.

spaceA dart struck Samuel's heart as he pondered over that and it's sting pierced him to his core. He was ready to fight Perun from the instant he sighted him, yet Perun. . . Though he was ordered to by Libra, their father, and though victory over Samuel in his current state would have been easy, his brother refused, stating that he simply didn't feel like fighting his brother. Samuel's lips curled into a frown as doubt seethed into his heart and he suddenly longed for Perun to be with them on the journey, finally free from Libra's iron reign.

spaceSamuel's mind slowly stepped from its trance and observed the world around then, noting that the environment had changed. The trees had grown thin and their leaves were absent, leaving long, crooked branches to reach for the skies like a witches fingers. The ground was firm, though a very soft powder rested atop that hard ground, their paws leaving faint tracks as they walked on. No birds sang and no squirrels scurried to and fro. The land was quiet now, and slightly warmer than before.

space Samuel gazed past them and felt the tension and nervousness that had sat on his shoulders the entire journey slowly begin to slide off. The ground leveled out twenty feet ahead of them into a dry, cracked, barren land of sanctuary, marking the end of the mountain. His heart skipped a beat and he suddenly felt the very abnormal feeling to run, like a child, into the East and celebrate their victory. He swallowed the urge and turned his attention to June with a slight smile. The viscling was walking in silence, her eyes on the ground just below her, watching her paws move along the land.

spaceSamuel forced his smile to vanish and cleared his throat to catch her attention. “Hey June,”

    space“Hm?”

    space“Look up.”

spaceJune lifted her head and inhaled a long, steady gasp. He watched as she sprinted ahead of him, shouting in joy and triumph. He let that smile out again, her exuberance at their new freedom bringing a soft and bubbly feeling to his heart, but the feeling was quickly gone.

spaceBehind a tree she was quickly approaching, something moved.

spaceSamuel felt a sharp pang of fear and panic shriek in his chest. “June!”

spaceShe glanced back as she passed the tree, confused, then stared in shock as a large viscet sprang out, reaching to strike her.

spaceSamuel bolted through over the dry ground, his lips curling into a snarl and his heart pounding in his chest. Electricity began to ripple along his whiskers and he felt his magic beginning to awaken on his paw pads.

spaceHe braced himself to slam into June’s attacker, but the viscet saw him first and stopped themselves, pulling their head back.

spaceSamuel slid to a stop between the viscet and June and snarled venomously, ready for a fight.

spaceThe viscet - a female - snarled back, her fangs gleaming and her whiskers moving through the air behind her.

spaceSamuel froze and stared at her in shock. She was like him in body type and mutation, though nothing alike him in color. Six horns rested on her head and her chest feathers were wispy and flowing like clouds. Scales lined her paws and her tail was easily twice the length of a normal viscets. He couldn't help but wonder if her conditions of birth were the same, if Soma had committed that heinous act against other eggs, but he shoved the thought away and focused on the mater at hand.

space“Who are you?!” She spoke sharply, her words like daggers pressed against a throat.

spaceSamuel snarled at her, anger pushing his heart harder. Then, small paws rested on his leg and a quiet voice reached him. “Sam, we are the invader’s here. If she were with Libra, she wouldn’t have stopped to ask us who we were.”

spaceSamuel frowned deeply. He did not trust this viscet, and he still had his suspicions, but June was right about one thing: they were the invaders. He spoke again, calmly this time, though his body was still tense. “Samuel. And you?”

spaceThe female narrowed her eyes, her fangs still barred. “Keristrasza. What are you doing in the East?” Her feathers slowly raised as she snarled again.

    space“That-”

spaceJune cut Samuel off just before the sharp words could leave his mouth, slipping past him to speak to the female instead. “We are seeking sanctuary. See, we lived with Libra - I was kidnapped and he used to work for him - but then he and another took me and fled to the East with me. There were a lot of complications, but we finally made it. We mean no harm to you or anyone, we just want a place to live freely.” She spoke quickly, nervousness driving the words out frantically, and smiled at the end, pleading internally that the female would not try to fight Samuel.

spaceShe watched June with a stoic expression, though her snarl remained. “I did not ask for your life story.”

space“That wasn’t my life story.” June's smile remained as she watched the female and answered calmly.

spaceSlowly, she calmed and lifted her head, her eyes locked onto Samuel. He slowly forced himself to relax, his magic fading away again, though his scales remained hard in case he should need to fight.

space“Come. My grandfather will be the judge of if you stay or must leave.” She gestured for them to move ahead with a paw. June nodded and walked along, but Samuel hesitated. He eyed the female for a moment before walking past her, his ears turned back to pay attention to her.

spaceShe walked after them, driving them deeper into the East. Samuel remained tense, but took a moment to look around. It was as it had appeared from the mountain top, yet it seemed somehow better. Though the land was empty and miserable looking, its cracked and dead ground seemed to sing in hope and triumph. Samuel looked down to June who grinned up at him, tears in her eyes. She turned back and walked backwards and started small talk with Keristrasza. The female spoke shortly in return, still not trusting them as she led them along the land.

spaceSlowly, Samuel relaxed. His scales softened as the feeling of needing to fight left him and the peace of the land finally reached his core.

spaceAfter several hours of walking, Keristrasza stopped them. “Stay here, I will get him.” She moved ahead and entered into a den. Samuel watched where she had gone for a moment, then knelt to speak to June.

    space“So, what do you think?”

spaceJune laughed a little. “They have quite the welcoming party, don’t they?”

spaceSamuel smiled a little and nodded.

space“It’s weird, I’ve never seen a viscet with your mutations before. I mean, she doesn’t have the stuff on your elbows, but still.”

spaceSamuel nodded and shrugged. He began to stand and face the den again as he heard movement within. Voices spoke, one being the female and the other being a males - deep and smooth with a friendly chime to it, though it all held something a little solemn.

space“Sam?” His eyes turned to June as she spoke. “Can you promise me something?”

    space“What is it?”

space“Promise me that you hid nothing from me on this journey. Nothing at all.”

spaceSamuel watched her. His mind instantly moved to her father, resting in the den atop the great mountain. His mind circled and rushed as he locked eyes with her. Finally, he rested up on a decision. He opened his mouth and spoke to her.

space“I promise. Nothing was hidden from you. Nothing at all.”

At the beginning of their journey, June was scared of Samuel. She could
sense his good intentions and his determination, so she trusted him,
but the way he looked at and spoke to her made her feel anxious
and small. It was Asteria who truly helped her to open her eyes to
him and what he was truly doing through that cold and harsh attitude.
After Asteria's passing, June began to see the truly softer side of
Samuel. He mourned with her and carried her, caring for her though
he was broken as well. He talked with her more openly, though he
did have his moments when she tugged at sensitive strings. June
forgave him for leaving her with Kasdeya because she understood
why, and neither of them knew Kasdeya would be who she was. She
is proud of Samuel and happy to walk by his side. She has learned
the true meaning of his anger and coldness towards her and has
put his past behind him, embracing who he is today. Though she is
hesitant to admit it to him, June sees Samuel as a father and looks
to him for guidance in all things.

When Samuel and Asteria first met, things did not go quite as well
intentionally believed. He was dead set and dedicated to Libra,
Soma, and his brother Perun, and Asteria was little more than a
co-worker or a pawn. However, she did not just step back and let
him continue thinking that and brushing her off. Asteria was the
first viscet - other than family - to approach him directly and
speak to him firmly, despite his attitude or dismissive words,
and that intrigued him. Slowly, their relationship grew and
became stronger until it overpowered part of his desire to press
on and rise in the ranks alone. He trusted Asteria, and she trusted
him. They told each other everything, though Samuel kept much
of his past muddied by lies. When he suggested to Asteria that
they leave, she instantly supported him. Through their journey
she was there for him, watching over him like a worried lover,
and helping June through the difficult travel as well. However,
when his lies were unveiled in that underground place, the anger
and broken trust towards him blinded her and led her to seek
his life, believing he was not up to what he claimed to be. In the
end, Asteria saw Samuel as a challenger and a foe, though he
always saw her as a dear, close friend, even as he stole away
her life.

Samuel and Perun grew up together as brothers. They were close
and shared their triumphs and failures together, growing off of
each other and helping one another become stronger and more
capable. As they grew, that bond only strengthened. They were
tight-knit, two peas in a pod, the perfect team. However, when
Samuel met Asteria his mind found a new track. While Perun
continued to climb in the ranks, seeking the praise from his father
that he had thought Samuel wanted as well, he found Samuel
was being left behind. He tried to convince him to go forward
with him, but stopped after some time, seeing that his brother
had become content with his slow accent. They began to see
each other less and less, but Perun's opinion of his brother never
once changed. When Samuel left with Asteria and June without
telling him, he was more hurt than enraged. He was happy for
his brother and held hopes that he would find his way to safety,
but was also broken-hearted for he knew he would never be
able to catch up with him or join him on his journey. His
encounter with Samuel at the base of the mountain was his final
farewell, as he knew his home would remain with Libra until
the male met his downfall.

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

In his youth, Samuel looked up to Libra as a father and a role model.
He saw the male as a powerful source of knowledge and skill and
sought to reach his level of power and make him proud. When Libra
killed his mother and tricked him into killing his father, Samuel's
faith in him faltered for only a second. The young viscling hardly
knew his blood parents, and upon their death his mind simply
rested on the statement that they never were his parents. His only
parents were Libra and Soma. As he grew older, he grew more
devoted and determined. He worked with his brother to please
their father. When he was brought to Libra's new home, he worked
even harder to please him. His opinion of Libra never chipped or
bent, at least not until he met June. When he heard the male was
taking visclings he supported him as always. He watched as visclings
with potentially threatening magic entered and were sorted through,
but when he met June and found how weak her magic is, the first
chip broke from his pillar of trust. Samuel now sees Libra as a looming
threat. He fears him and makes nearly any excuse he can find to not
fight the male. He views him for what he truly is, though a hint of
a fatherly figure still remains in his memory.

Samuel had very few interactions with Soma throughout his life. The times
he saw her, she was sweet and gentle to him, acting motherly and loving,
and it was this behavior that set him to view her as his mother. Despite
this position he had placed her in, she had very little mental influence
on him as a viscling. He rarely looked to her for guidance or examples,
as he hardly knew her, and she was hardly mentioned in his conversations
with others. As he grew older, Soma became more and more distant,
though her magic was ever present. Samuel could feel its influence over his
shoulder at all times, like an ominous hand ready to seize his throat if he
made a mistake. When his view of Libra changed, it was this ominous
presence that stirred him to viewing her as wicked and evil. He now despises
Soma and views her as a coward. He is not afraid to fight her, and actually
is itching to get the chance, but he knows that so long as she hides behind
Libra, he will never get the chance.

To put it simply, Samuel and Keristrasza did not have a great first impression.
Despite June's advise to him and the fact that she had taken them to the
guardians, which allowed them to live in the East, his trust for her was still
a frail blade of grass. After entering the East and finding a home, Samuel
found her to be a constant annoyance. He was forced to meet with the
guardians on a constant basis, and she seemed to be there four out of
seven times, eyeing him with distrust. Every time he declined their request
for him to join them and help fight Libra, he could feel her eyes burning
into him. It was not until three months in the East that things finally began
to change, after he had started sharing everything he knew about Libra.
She slowly stopped glaring at him and would speak to him more openly.
While Samuel would not quite consider her a friend, as her lawful good
morals and her harsh loyalty often counter his more selfish causes and
actions, he would accept the term acquaintance.

Samuel's relationship with Kasdeya is perhaps his most simple and clear
relationship of them all. He simply despises her and her entire being.
He had trusted her, albeit foolishly, with June in a time of weakness
and fear, and she had nearly undone all the work he had accomplished.
Not only that, but she was one of the only foes - save for the ten second
battle with Takaeo - who directly sought June's life. Samuel is impressed
by her power and her strength, and he is well aware that she had nearly
killed him in that battle. He is not desirous to fight her again, but if he
should encounter her, he would - depending on the circumstances - spring
into a rage-induced battle.

Samuel's relationship with Shin Rei is a highly neutral, uncertain one.
He holds a sliver of respect towards the male for admitting what
he believed would be best for his daughter and for giving her a
chance to see true freedom, and he pities the male for his past
and his anchor and desperate hope which keeps him planted on
that mountain. Samuel has not seen Shin Rei since their original
encounter, but he often thinks of the male. He has not mentioned
him to any others, as he knows that no amount of talking or asking
could pull that male from his roost atop the mountain, for it is the
love of a father which keeps him rooted there. Before his journey,
Samuel would have thought him foolish and ignorant, but now. . .
He views Shin's reasoning in a more favorable and understanding
way.

Samuel knew very little of Akela. He knew she was severely loyal to
Soma, and that she had a merciless sense of attacking when ordered
to. She had little stamina and attacked quickly and relentlessly to
attempt to end the battle soon, but it wore her out and made her slow.
However, her worst flaw in combat was her natural sense to question.
She tried to hold conversations in battle, which lowered her senses and
made her vulnerable. Samuel held regrets when he let her flee, knowing
that the decision would bite him in the tail later on as Libra and Soma
would send stronger foes, but after meeting Shin Rei and hearing his story,
his regrets faltered and he felt a little more at ease for letting her live.

To Samuel, Fenris is neither friend nor foe. He is something in between,
a neutral party which got swept up in Samuel's life and problems by
Libra and Soma. After June convinced him to spare the males life,
Samuel no longer saw him as a threat. It was clear to both males who the
winner was and that the battle was over, and Fenris made it clear to
Samuel that he was no longer a threat to the male or his companions. They
went their separate ways and Samuel thinks of him very little, most often
recalling their battle in remembrance of June's actions. He knows that
if he were to encounter Fenris again, he would fight if needed, but would
prefer a peaceful interaction, and perhaps the chance to get to know the
male June saved from his fangs a little better.

The Rabbit Dragon

-

The Rabbit Dragon and Samuel do not have much of a relationship, at least,
not anymore. During childhood, the Rabbit Dragon spoke to Samuel often as
an imaginary friend. However, as Samuel grew and that cover faded away,
the Rabbit Dragon grew silent and speaks only in important situations.
Samuel views the Rabbit Dragon in neither a poor, nor uplifted state. He
sees him more as a guide, one which can be listened to but is not required
to. He takes his words with a grain of salt and isn't afraid to question or
challenge him, but he has also found that much of what this beasts says is
true. He has found the dragon to be highly observant and intelligent, and this
puts Samuel in a state of uneasy weariness.

About Samuel

Postby Hail. » Fri May 04, 2018 2:35 am

--------
Personality

Samuel is a cold, tough-hearted viscet with a strong sense for survival. Many of his actions are done for his benefit, or for the benefit of someone he cares deeply for. He can be unruly at times, trusting in himself and his own capabilities and following no one but himself. This often leads to him making poor decisions or acting upon impulse, and though he rarely shows outward remorse, he often feels regret for foolish actions taken in these times.
Samuel comes off as a rather cruel viscet. He speaks hard and briefly, his words cold and his eyes piercing. He is stern and strict, keeping everything he has control over on the right path. He is as unmovable as a boulder in a river, standing strong against the current, only sliding or moving once in a year or two. However, despite this there is something to him that is almost caring, as though he does all of this to protect.
Samuel's greatest flaw is his anger-management issues. Anger is a constant companion to him, it has been since he was a child and it seems as though it will remain beside him until the end of time. This anger drives his actions more often than he'd like to admit, and though at times he can seize hold of it and restrain himself, there are times where the anger takes hold and morphs into hideous rage. It is at these times that Samuel is his most dangerous.
Samuel is a force to be reckoned with and does not seem to make a good friend or companion. He struggles with honesty and often weaves white lies to cover secret truths from the eyes of friends and, despite his intelligence and observance, he often makes mistakes that he becomes furious over in the near future. Despite all this, however, there is a softer side, one that must be worked for and reached for endlessly, and continuously worked for in order for it to stay. This is Samuel's fatherly, loyal, selfless side. Deep down, all of Samuel's actions are for the survival of himself, or of a loved one. Even his anger is not immune to this law, morphing into rage when his life or the life of one he loves is at risk. Samuel would sacrifice life and limb for the one he cares for, giving up everything to see them happy. The work required to see this side of Samuel and to earn it is unwritten and unknown, one could live alongside him his whole life and be a loyal and caring brother but never earn it, while another could travel for a few months with him and earn it in half the time. It is a side that many do not know of, and many may never know of in their life time.

The Rabbit Dragon

spaceThe dragon whose life was stolen to give power to Samuel lives within the
viscet, it's soul sealed to his side and it's powers and might flowing through his veins. Originally, the dragon
was quite bitter. However, in time he accepted the fact that the lad had nothing to do with his slaughter,
and his hatred turned pointedly to Libra and Soma.

spaceWhen Samuel was young, the Rabbit Dragon acted as an imaginary friend,
giving him a conscience and talking to him often. Samuel told others of a friend he could hear, but his
statements were all dismissed. As Samuel grew, the Rabbit Dragon became less and less vocal, sensing
Samuel's devoted loyalty to the two he hated and fearing that the male might inform Soma of the voice
and he would be snuffed out to nothing more than a power supply.

spaceThe Rabbit Dragon was perfectly content with being quiet, particularly
when Samuel left with Asteria and June. He did not want the male to experience any further strain that
may push him back to Libra. However, when he left June and began to return, the Rabbit Dragon could
not sit in silence any longer and spoke up to Samuel for the first time in years.

spaceNow, the Rabbit Dragon does not talk very often. He responds when
called upon, and will speak when he thinks Samuel is making a gravely wrong choice, but for the most
part he lays silently on Samuel's sides, observing the male's life and helping him to access his powers,
anxiously awaiting the day Samuel and Soma will battle so he may get his revenge.

spaceThe influence of the Rabbit Dragon on Samuel is far grater than Samuel
knows or the dragon will admit. Being a piece of his soul, the Rabbit Dragon knows all of his thoughts,
feelings, hopes, desires, and fears. At times, he is able to shove a memory to the forefront of Samuel's
mind and influence his actions, or he can toy with one of his thoughts or feelings to nudge him in the
right direction. The Rabbit Dragon does not confess this to Samuel or any other, and he does not do it
often or abuse his power, but only when he deems it needed.

Powers

-
-------
-
-
-
-
-

- HeatImage
Samuel can increase the heat of the atmosphere
around him, particularly in his left paw. This can
cause fire to burst forth, it can boil the water in
the air, or simply warm it. This is limited,
however, by his own body temperature and
energy. He feels the heat of the things he crafts,
so the larger the fire he makes then the higher
risk he has of overheating himself.
- ColdImage
In his right paw, the atmosphere can be chilled
and even solidified into ice. This power brings
forth frost, ice, hail, and can even turn rain to
snow as it falls from the sky. However, he does
not use it very often. As with the heat, he feels
the cold he crafts. Samuel grows sluggish and
irritable in the cold and so using this power is
rarely a long-term thing. He prefers to use it
in short spurts, taking intervals between cold
and heat to keep his temperature under control.
- EarthImage
When Samuel stomps the ground, the world
feels it and responds accordingly. This power
has incredible range and diversity, but it is
limited by his energy and strength. While he can
cause large structures to rise from the ground,
his energy limit keeps him from creating
anything larger than 50 feet tall. If he should
create something as tall as his limit, he would
collapse a moment later by exhaustion.

- WindImage
When Samuel calls, the wind twists to his voice.
He often will mix this with one of his other
powers to craft a tornado of fire or ice, or to
lift large stones to throw. This power is one of
his least used as, while it can boost many other
powers, on it's own it is not very strong or useful.
- PlasmaImage
This power is the rarest to see as it is the hardest
to control. The plasma starts as electricity in his
whiskers. He is able to use it to strike and harm
foes, though it has a 'time limit' before it will
turn on him and harm him as well as the foe,
and anyone in a twenty-foot radius. Samuel is
curious about this power, but it comes so rarely
that he hardly has time to learn more of it, as
at the times it does arrive he is deep in a
dangerous battle.
- RageImage
Samuel's strongest power is simply his rage. In
battle, he is level headed and focuses, though
it often can hold him from his full potential,
as though consciousness was handcuffs. However,
when his rage is sparked and takes hold, there is
no hesitance. He feels no wounds received during
points of rage and does not feel hesitance or fear.
The rage is only broken when the foe is dead or
when an outside force pulls him from it. This rage
is not self-sparked. The most common cause is a
threat made towards the life of another he cares for.

spaceAgain by Caleb Hyles is the "theme song" I chose for Samuel. I chose this song because it goes along well with his backstory and his life, while also sounding as though the words could come from his own mouth. Each line is precise and the meaning is spoken firmly and is spoken in more of pessimistic aspect, which is what Samuel seems to have most of the time.

spaceThe song reflects aspects that are shown in Samuel through out his story. Pride and anger are two common themes in this song. The need to do everything and have control of everything. "And I will carry everything that's within my reach, though I know that, it's killing me." The song tells of someone who wants to break free, to reach their goal while also protecting those around them from any harm. Samuel leads his group through the wilderness, fighting every battle on his own and risking his own life in the process.

spaceThe song also reflect what happens within the story, be it a flash back or a present event. "A crowded maze of apathy and rage," much like his life under Libra, bored with nearly everything and angry at being "stuck" in lower rankings than he wants. "If we are to have dreams, then there is no such thing as safe and sound." Samuel's dream of being in a higher position brought him many foes, his later dream of getting away brought him many battles, and his eventual dream to help June reach the East led to him nearly giving up and almost dying.

spaceThis song also reflect his relationships. "Be friend or foe I welcome anyone who challenge me." From Asteria, his close and trusted friend, to Kasdeya, a viscet he hardly knew, many viscets have and will try for his life. The fight with Asteria helped to pull him free from discrimination as he accepted the reality that anyone, even June, could turn upon him and seek for his life. "And I thank you for trying to understand this mess I've made of me." The entire story, even when she grew angry with him, June sought to help Samuel and always stood by his side. She is his support and the reason that he even left or made it to the East.

spaceThose are just a few reasons why I chose this song for Samuel. Of course, there are a few lines that are a little harder to fit in with him, as the song is not tailored to him and he is not tailored to the song, but with deep thought and adjusting I found that about 95% of all lines fit in with his story and even helped to tell things a little better from his perspective.

spaceOriginally, I was against going for several songs. Then, I ran into this one. I chose this song to come into play after Samuel kills Asteria for several reasons: the mood, the lyrics, and how they applied to his situation.

spaceSo the first reason, the mood, is pretty clear. It is a slow, solemn song that brings the mind to think and reflect, something that Samuel has begun to do at this point. It is a song that pulls the heart to sadness without telling directly why or what has happened to the singer. It is very metaphorical and its melody and harmony are both honest and seem to echo throughout the entire song, like each note is having a hard time leaving the listener.

spaceThe lyrics of this song, as stated before, are very metaphorical. The singer is not actually running into a fire, losing a war, or drowning in an island, but that is how they feel. Asteria had been Samuel's support. She was the one who stirred him to leaving and the one who motivated him to treat June better than he had. Killing her after she had turned on him and called him a liar and traitor broke him. He could not "cut these wires" of doubt that suddenly arose and he found himself "running into the fire" of doubt and fear in himself. He nearly lost the fight, and he nearly lost June. He lost Asteria. He had already held doubts of his own abilities, it is why he was so angry with Asteria for not helping against Fenris. Though he was strong enough to kill Asteria, it was only by surprising her and through his own rage that he could.

spaceThis song had two very close contenders, both of which were about embracing freedom and finding happiness in helping another, or fighting for freedom, but in the end I felt that neither truly fit the end of the story. Just because they are physically free, does not mean they are mentally free or that their troubles are over. The end of the story itself alludes to trouble in the future as Samuel slips back to the old, wretched habit of lying to those he cares for.

spaceMidnight Dove talks often about pressing on, leaving the past behind and never looking back. This is something that kept the two going. In their hardships, if they had thought back to their life beneath Libra's thumb where food was bountiful, company was often pleasant, and their purpose and safety was almost always assured, they would likely have wanted to returned. Traveling through the woods and over the mountain led to many injuries, mentally and physically, and they were often exhausted, scared, and hungry. Looking back to the past would have likely pulled their hearts to the pleasant side of life there and would have caused them to turn away from the East and surrender their goal.

spaceAnother major point of the song is in the second verse. "I found myself amongst the thorns and weeds, you found yourself amongst the beautiful trees." Samuel was raised among wicked, tainted things and raised to be alike them himself. He was taught twisted ways of the world and of life, and these teachings shine through in his actions. He is not against killing, particularly when the foe has made him angry enough, and he views the loss of life to another as a factor of nature. The stronger one's overcoming the weak in a never ending cycle. This thought process is dangerously close to that of Libra, and if it were not for June, it is possible that Samuel would have become just like Libra. June was raised differently and not as directly as Samuel. She lived some time with her birth father and learned the kindness of the world and how hope is in every leaf on the world's many trees. She has a far different perspective than Samuel and views all life to be vital, to the point that she is unwilling to kill in order to sustain her own life. Their morals counter each other very often, and the only reason Samuel hasn't killed every foe which approached them after Akela was because of June, who stopped him each time. Each time, that is, except for Asteria.

Epilouge

spaceThe East, though dry, barren, and hot, was a place that Samuel would have only been able to dream of. The cracked ground which stretched on and on for miles, and the distant clear ocean which turned that empty dirt to slick, clay-like mud all seemed to whisper softly to his heart and soul every day. Sure, it was a strange place to live in. The squirrels, foxes, and birds he had become so used to seeing were gone, replaced by strange and exotic mammals and very few unique avian species which roamed the healing land. Homes were dens dug into the ground, sitting in the cooler, softer earth below the broken and cracked surface, providing relief from the heat of the outside world.

spaceIt was nearly fall when they had taken their first true steps onto that ground and finally touched freedom for the first time, and now it was summer again, the seasons cycling through in a calm and constant rhythm.

spaceSamuel lived in a den which faced away from the great mountains marking the border. When he arrived in the East, Keristrasza took him and June to the guardians of the land for questioning. There was some tension between them, particularly due to Samuel’s childhood, but in the end Allaster - the leader and first of the guardians - stepped up and granted him access to live in the East and he was given a small part of land to make his home.

spaceHe and June had dug their den, working on it for a full week as they struggled with the new ground. It was not perfect, by any means. The interior was lumpy and oddly formed and the exterior was small, forcing Samuel to carefully maneuver his chest and hind legs through whenever he chose to enter or exit, but it was a good den and it served its purpose.

spaceOnce they had settled in, June was invited to attend a school in the East and learn the social practices of this part of the land. Samuel was against it, discomfort and distrust causing him to want to hold her back, but her excitement towards the offer caused him to calm himself and let her go. Since then she had been doing wonderfully. Her teacher reported her progress daily to him, and each time he saw her grades and behavior - though he didn’t always know exactly what those letters and numbers meant - he felt a little more proud.

spaceIn winter, he finally taught her to stand and walk properly. It was a challenge, for both of them. Samuel struggled to be patient with her as June fought to understand his very brief instructions and keep her balance. Each day she would try, and each day she would fall, but no matter what happened she always stood again. It was after four weeks, when Samuel changed his teaching method and took a new approach to helping her stand, that she finally took steps on her hind legs alone. Even if those steps were not perfect, they gave the pair great cause to celebrate together.

spaceWith spring came new factors to Samuel’s life. He had finally become social, learning to trust strangers again - though never fully - and even making what might be considered a friend or two. His den was distant from the small town nearby, but each day when he walked June to her school he would always take a moment to talk to a viscet or two on the way there and back. He did not quite feel comfortable, but he felt safe near them, as though he were young and naive again.

spaceSpring brought more than just friendships, however. It had been one of Samuel’s inner fears when he first met the guardians, and it had only partially gone away after they allowed him to live in the land. In late spring, he was approached by the three and asked that question he never wanted to hear.

space"Will you fight with us against Libra to stop him before it is too late?"

spaceIn the time since Samuel’s arrival, Libra’s forces had grown and stretched out, climbing the mountain and nearing the peak. The guardians wanted to face him and end it before he reached the East. However, their numbers and strengths were limited, so they invited him to stand with them, but he rejected their offer and made a new one.

spaceHis information, everything he knew of Libra and his armies, in exchange for Perun’s complete forgiveness if they should find him.

spaceHis offer was promptly rejected by Pele, the more fiery of the bunch, and declined by Apep, the youngest guardian. Allaster agreed with his team and the trio left him.

spaceSince that time, peace had come once more to Samuel’s home. June was away at school for most of the mornings and he spent most of his day hunting or carving - a craft which he was actually terrible at to begin with, but had slowly improved upon by practice.

spaceSamuel sat outside of his den, turning a sliver of dead wood in his paw as he peered at it. He wanted to make something for June this time, as he had not yet told her of his hobby, but what he wanted it to be always seemed to evade him.

spaceHe took a moment to look out over the landscape, searching the dry ground beyond for something which might inspire him, then turned his eyes to the drifting clouds and frowned. The world, though beautiful in its own unique way, seemed to restrain all inspiration from him and hold his paws still.

spaceWith a sigh, he set the wood down to work on later.

spaceHe sat back and shifted his weight, watching two creatures emerge from a distant den and begin rushing about, playing and squeaking energetically. As they did, a third head slowly peaked out from the den and looked around before the creature emerged fully. It was smaller and thinner than the others, and when it joined their game the original two seemed to calm and play gently. They played for a minute or two before scampering off together, likely to hunt.

spaceSamuel yawned and stretched his forepaws outward, popping the joints in his shoulders and rolling his neck as he did so. Life here was calm and relaxing, though only partly so. Though June and the guardians constantly reassured him that the land was safe, Samuel could never bring himself to sleep at night and instead kept a watch over June. Every so often he would practice combat moves on a nearby dead tree, and he would work with his magic often, keeping his skills sharp. Despite everything he had said and learned, he still felt that clutching anxiety in his chest which kept him from experiencing full rest as it screeched loudly in his mind, proclaiming everything that could go wrong or could happen.

spaceA shadow cast over Samuel’s tail and his eyes drifted towards it. He knew who it was before they spoke, the three tails of the shadow making it clear to him.

space“Hey, Samuel. Mind if I join you for a bit?”

spaceSamuel frowned slightly and shrugged, gesturing to the ground beside him.

spaceAllaster shuffled and sat beside him and sighed softly, watching the sky above. “How are you doing?”

space“I am well. Not much has changed since we last spoke.” Samuel gazed ahead stoically, though he watched Allaster from the corner of his eye. The male was only slightly smaller than Samuel and bore a calm demeanor to him at all times as he worked hard to keep his head level. It made sense that he was the leader of the trio, he was the most rational one, afterall.

space“Yes, the lands are quite calm lately.”

spaceNeither male spoke for a moment, both sitting in odd silence and watching the land which rolled out endlessly. An occasional long breath escaped from them, vocalizing the strain of the silence upon both males. It was clear that Allaster wanted to say something, but he fought to keep his muzzle shut as though he were hesitant to share the news.

spaceSamuel sighed heavily and spoke up, breaking the awkward cycle. “Allaster, what do you want?”

spaceAllaster smiled slightly and chuckled. “Why do I need to want something to visit?”

spaceSamuel glared at him and Allaster’s smile faltered. “Just tell me why you’re here.”

spaceAllaster sighed and nodded his head slightly. “Alright, alright. Samuel, Libra has reached the peak.” Samuel felt his feathers bristle, though he fought himself to not show an outward reaction. “His magic is beginning to expand over the peak and spill into the East. We need to act against him now, or these lands will be in danger.”

space“I told you my answer before, and it has not changed.”

space“I know, I know. But, you see. . . I talked with the others, reasoned with them, and the severity of our case helped us to find a decision. Now, Perun. . . He’s done a lot of things, Samuel. Things that have made the people cry out in hatred for his blood, and to just forgive him for everything is a great task to ask, a nearly impossible one.” He paused for a moment, glancing at Samuel’s stoic face, then continued. “But, for information against our greatest foe, the one who threatens the lives of all. . . We decided that the price of forgiving Perun is far worth the information.”

spaceSamuel nodded slowly. He did his best not to show it, but relief rushed over his body and he slowly released the breath he did not know he was holding. “I’m glad that you have taken my offer.”

spaceAllaster nodded. “So, tomorrow, please meet at the town. Keristrasza will be there - she’s visiting for the week again - and will take you to meet us. I think the other two should be present for the information, don’t you agree?”

space“I’ll be at the town tomorrow, then.”

spaceAllaster smiled brightly and stood, patting Samuels shoulder with a paw. “Thank you, Samuel. I’m glad that you’re able to help us.” He turned and walked away and Samuel sighed softly after he had gone.

spaceSamuel’s paws drifted to the wood and he lifted it and began chipping away at it and working it with his claws. June would be home in four hours or so.

spaceIt was beginning to grow dark out, the sun sinking down lazily for it’s slumber as the moon rose to take its place. Samuel sat outside of the den, still working the wood to pull out the finer details of his piece. He knew June would be home soon, and he wanted to finish before she arrived.

spaceAs he worked in the final detail, he heard her paws patting against the ground.

spaceHe looked back over his shoulder and watched as she quickly made her way towards him on her hind legs. Her steps were still wobbly and unstable every now and then, but she had improved greatly since their first time working on it.

    space“Sam!”

spaceSamuel’s ears flicked at her tone and he peered at her with a frown as she marched over and stood before him with an upset expression. “Is everything okay?”

spaceHer frown deepened and she folded her forepaws, glaring at him. “No!”

spaceSamuel waited for her to continue, but when she did not he spoke up. “What’s wrong, then?”

space“Do you know what I heard today?” This time, she did not give him time to answer. “Libra is coming to the East!”

spaceSamuel frowned. He opened his mouth slightly to say something, but once more she spoke before he could.

space“And you aren’t going to help fight him!” Samuel suddenly felt heavy and his eyes drifted down and to the right as June raged on. “Why not, Sam?! The guardians need you, you know Libra better than anyone! He raised you and trained you! You know his fighting methods and his tricks, don’t you?! You would be able to best him in a fight any day! So why won’t you?!”

spaceSamuel could not meet her eyes. She didn’t understand. She wouldn’t.

space“While Libra’s up there extending his reach and making plans, you’re leaving the fate of the land - the fate of our lives - to three viscets! Don’t you want to do something?! Don’t you want to stand up and fight?! We made it this far, so why not fight a little further? I’ve seen you practice, Sam. I know you are still ready for a fight, so why back down now?! Look at me, Sam!”

spaceSamuel’s eyes drifted to her and his frown deepened. Her expression was more confused and frustrated than angry now, and a glint of fear for what was to come gleamed in her eyes.

space“Sam. . . Why won’t you fight anymore? I don’t want you to get hurt, but I know you can win against him. You fought so many others and came out on top each time. Your magic makes you almost untouchable, and you always seem to know just when to kick the fight up a gear to win, so why won’t you fight him? Do you not want to fight him? Is it a family thing?” Slowly, her expression grew angrier as she talked. Samuel felt a pressure in his chest which squeezed and strained upon him, demanding that he tell her the truth. “Is it because of Perun? Do you not want to risk fighting him? Or is it because of something else, like memories? Sam. . .” Her eyes darkened and she almost seemed to glare at him. “If Libra were to come here, were to come into the East to take me back. . . would you even fight him?”

spaceSamuel snapped. His paws shot forward and he latched onto her shoulders tightly. June’s eyes widened and her mouth opened as she stared at him in shock. His eyes moved forward and locked onto hers, gazing firmly though the action was a struggle to maintain. His grip tightened on her and he opened his mouth, the pressure in his chest rushing through his trachea and bursting from him in the form of words. “I’m scared, June!”

spaceThe two took a moment, staring at each other and breathing unevenly. Slowly, Samuel’s grip on her loosened, though his paws did not leave her shoulder. Her expression slowly melted into one of shock and concern and Samuel’s eyes drifted away from her.

space“I’m scared of him, June. I’ve seen what he can do, I’ve seen his power and just how far he will go to win. If I fight him, I will die. I may have magic of a wide variety, and I may be able to face many powerful foes, but Libra is not just powerful. He is a whole new level, a monster in a viscets skin. His magic rips through anything - Asteria’s was only able to make a barrier strong enough to pause it for just a few moments. Fighting him is a death wish, and those guardians would be no help to me. They would be dead long before they could even think about attacking him, June. I can’t fight Libra.”

spaceJune’s eyes slowly drifted to the ground, her expression still shocked. “So, that’s it then, huh? Libra’s just going to win because we can’t fight him.”

spaceSamuel tightened his grip on her for a moment before sighing. “No, I don’t think so. . .”

spaceJune frowned at him and tilted her head.

space“June, I didn’t just leave the guardians on their own. I am going to be telling them everything I know tomorrow, all in exchange for Perun - if they should find him.”

    space“Why does that change anything?”

space“Because. I may not be able to fight them, but Perun. . . Perun holds the magic of Libra and Soma in his veins. He is a terrifying force to be reckoned with when he wants to. If the guardians can get him, tell him I got him his freedom and forgiveness and convince him to help them, then they will have a fighting chance.”

space“But you’re not going to fight?”

spaceSamuel reached back and grabbed the piece of carved wood. He glanced at it, turning it in his paw for a moment, then lifted his head to face June. He held it out and June took it, examining the wooden dream catcher with curiosity in her eyes.

space“Sometimes, fighting isn’t always the answer, June. This is just one of those cases. . .”

spaceThough he said it firmly, his heart flinched at the line. Deep down, he knew that a war would be needed to stop the reach of Libra. War, and death, for Libra would not stop until he was nothing more than a cold corpse on the ground. Still, somehow telling himself it over and over again, saying that he wouldn’t have to fight Libra, seemed to calm him.

spaceEven though he knew, it wasn’t true.
