While Malia waited for the water to boil, she killed the few walkers who had been creeping up on her. She his them in other houses so that if anyone were to come by, they wouldn't notice that someone had been here.
Then she went back to her fire and killed it, taking the newly purified water and pouring it into her bottle. Malia went back inside the house and made sure that it was properly fortified.

Troy was honestly hurt that his dad couldn't care less about Malia. After all the work she had done on the ranch, he still hated her. "I think you made a big mistake kicking her out." Troy said, as soon as he had built up the nerve to say it.
"Troy, I'm doing this for the good of the ranch! Don't you see that?" Jeremiah asked, slamming his hands down on the table and glaring at his son.

Malia lied down on the bed, staring at the ceiling. She missed the ranch. The food, safety, animals---everything. And she also missed Troy. Malia pulled out the walkie-talkie Troy had given her. She already missed his voice and his company. She turned it on and clicked the talking button. She released it, unsure of what to say. He could be busy right down. She didn't want to disturb him.

Troy sighed, defeated, and left. He was going to go out fora walk or something, anything to get away from him moronic father. As he was heading outside, he heard the sound of the walkie-talkie button being used but no talking. What if Malia was in trouble and she couldn't talk? He quickly pulled out the walkie-talkie and, paranoid, pressed the button. "Malia? Everything alright?"

Malia was lying on the bed, lost in thought when she heard Troy's voice on the walkie-talkie. She bolted upright and grabbed the walkie-talkie, and pressed the talk button. "Troy!" she exclaimed, overjoyed to hear his voice. "Yeah, everything's alright. I was going to test it to see if it worked, but I couldn't think of anything to say, so I didn't. Is everything alright? Did you talk to your dad? I didn't interrupt something, did I? How are you?" Malia spoke quickly, wanting to ask so many questions but also wanting to hear Troy talk again right away.

"Everything's alright, don't worry, you didn't interupt anything. I just finished talking to him." Troy said, taking a seat below one of the trees. "I'm...I'm as good as I can be, I guess. I still miss you though." He said that last part softly. "What about you? How are you? You're safe, right? Any troubles?"
