Elena whistled as she flitted around her cauldron, which was frozen to the touch. She would continue looking for medicinal herbs, but in that moment, she needed to be able to ensure that they wouldn't rot.

"We're going off to hunt," said Caroline from behind her.

Elena twisted around in midair, shocked for a moment before calming as she saw her friend. "I'll tell Tobias when he comes back."

Caroline nodded. "Thanks." She shifted into her wolf form, a lithe brown wolf with striking yellow eyes, and sprinted outside the boundaries of the coven proper.

"How do you even know where gryphons live?" Tobias asked Leon.

"Practice," responded Leon absently. "Lots of practice."

"And some magic," added Niklas, eying Tobias.

Tobias rolled his eyes. "I'm not responding to that."

"Just by saying that," Fritz muttered from his shoulder, "you did."

"Oh, shut up," replied Tobias quietly with poorly-concealed smile. Niklas's face turned to one of mild confusion before he saw the salamander, at which he widened his eyes dramatically and nodded slowly.

Tobias gasped as he saw the gryphons. And they had eggs! He could feel Fritz quivering on his shoulder and when he looked down, wasn't surprised to see his hands shaking too. Leon and Niklas hadn't lied and had delivered on far more than their initial promise. Now if they could just tame the gryphons, all would be well.

"How should we go about it?" Tobias muttered.

"Carefully," replied Leon.

Juliana hummed as she trotted through the forest. Tobias had been extremely accepting of her into the coven, and she believed that she had found her forever home. While it was traditional for centaurs to seek out new herds to form their own families, it had still stung when her parents had effectively thrown her out. But now... This was a fresh start.

Adonia and Silas, the names that Tobias had given to the two gryphons, had settled in well. The egg was always cared for, both by Adonia and by one of the coven members. Silas was occasionally taken out to hunt with Caroline and James, and he seemed to enjoy the attention and freedom.

"Alright," said Tobias, glancing over at his coven. He was proud of how far they had come in so short a time. Had it really only been five years? Well, five years was a long time, he supposed. "Caroline and James, you'll be taking Silas out to hunt today. He's been getting restless and needs a break."

The two werewolves nodded with grim seriousness. While hunting with Silas could be fun--and Tobias knew from first-hand experience--it was dangerous, as the gryphon needed to avoid crashing into the trees or wandering off on his own.

"Julie," Tobias continued, using the nickname that the centaur had requested, "you'll be gathering. It's never a bad thing to have too much food, especially during the fall and winter." Juilie said nothing but her tail flicked in acknowledgement. "Leon, Niklas..." Tobias looked to the two elves. "Do whatever. Either look for new companions or stay with Adonia and help Elena protect the egg."

Leon dipped his head. "I think we'll be going out on an excursion today," he said. "If we can, we might do some hunting."

"Great," replied Tobias. "Now everyone get to it!"

"You know," said Caroline softly, "we haven't had children yet while all our friends and family have had several each." She and her mate, James, were currently relaxing by a river with Silas lying down close by.

"I know," replied James curtly. "And?"

Caroline smiled shyly. "Well, shouldn't we 'get on it' then?" Comprehension dawned in James's eyes and his mate grinned. "Mhmm," she said. "If you want to have kids, it's really now or never."

James looked Caroline in the eyes. "Well, in that case, now. But maybe not today. We are hunting."

Caroline snorted. "Obviously," she said.

"This is a rather small coven," commented Alyssa, the new witch mage. She grinned. "But smaller is better for defense."

"Let's hope we don't face anything too soon," muttered Tobias.

Alyssa gave the coven leader a glance. "Why so twitchy?"

Tobias shuddered as he let out a breath. "Never been good around people. Honestly don't know how this coven started or how it will go with me as it's head."

Alyssa put a sympathetic hand on his shoulder. "I'm sure it will be okay," she said. "After all, there are eight people and you've managed to tame two gryphons! Two! Do you know how hard it is for people to survive, let alone tame a gryphon?" Alyssa's black cat, Nightshade, nudged her leg. "Watsit now, girl?"

Tobias watched as Alyssa and Nightshade talked, even though he couldn't understand a word. But that was how things went; a witch or wizard could only understand their familiar due to some unknown limitation of the magic that gave them the ability to communicate in the first place. "Think she'll be a good fit?" he muttered to Fritz who was on his shoulder as always.

Fritz's tail twitched. "Perhaps," he replied, eyes tracking Nightshade. "She seems like she'll be able to take on any troubles we run into. And she seems loyal," he added. "Always a good thing. You can never go wrong with loyal."

"It just depends on who she's loyal to," Tobias reminded his salamander familiar.

Fritz's body bobbed up and down in his imitation of a shrug. "We'll find out, won't we?"

Leon knelt down, stroking the jackalope in an attempt to calm it. "What got it so worried?" he wondered aloud.

Niklas shrugged. "Dunno, but jackalopes are usually calm. Unflappable. Whatever scared it must be much more powerful than it."

Leon sighed. "Yes. And you know just as well as I do that they're scared of unicorns, one of the most gentle and benevolent magical creatures. Not so unflappable there, huh?"

Niklas scowled. "Regardless. We need to look for it because it's probably more powerful than this little guy here."

"True enough."
