to color in bases, you first need to find the color layer. i'll use my own base as an example.



first of all, if a layer has a black dot next to it, that means that it is visible (you can see it). if it doesn't, that means it is invisible. you can see here that i have the "longer fur color" layer visible, and that would be the color for the body. so next you click "lock alpha." this button lets you draw whatever you want in that color without it going outside what's already drawn. does that make sense?
