MADDOX [five] [wizard] [male] [tags: open]

Maddox awoke, although to nothing in particular. He raised his old head, his tired eyes taking in his surroundings. The space beside him was empty, as it had always been, and always will be. He grumbled under his breath, and lay his head down between his paws. He often woke up like this, in the early hours of the morning. He wasn't sure why though, but it had been happening for as long as he could remember. A slight breeze blew through the den's entrance, causing the old wolf to shiver. He repositioned himself, his back facing the entrance, to hopefully keep the cold wind from reaching his face and stomach. He had noticed the clumps of fur that came out of his stomach, leaving bald spots. As a wizard, he knew it to be a symptom of his old age. His father had also begun to lose fur when he was Maddox's age. At first, he had feared his time was coming, that he would soon be reduced to nothing, that the pack would be left without a wizard to heal the wounded, the ill.
When the not-yet-royal-wizard, Lillith, arrived, Maddox hadn't thought much of her. Because of her young age, he had always tried to avoid her when he could. He was surprised when the announcement came to declare her the royal wizard. Full of jealousy and envy, Maddox turned hostile around her. He had been working his whole life to become to royal wizard, and all that hard work had been taken away from him by some pup. He refused to take orders from her, and his anger affected the way he worked. He was picking out the wrong herbs, healing cuts wrong, treating illnesses with the wrong plants. Eventually, the anger subsided. He learned her history, why she worked so hard, and his negative emotions towards her were immediately replaced with respect and a tremendous amount of guilt. He appreciated how hard Lillith worked, especially considering her age, and his worries were put to rest. The pack would be taken care of after he was gone.
Another cool breeze snapped Maddox out of his flashback. He shivered once more, and lay his head down onto the ground. He figured he should try to rest a bit before the sun rose and duty called.
