The scar over Astraea's right eye seared painfully, a sign that she was letting her anger get out of control. Biting her tongue so hard she tasted blood, Astraea forced herself to calm down, taking several deep breaths before finally muttering, "I'm sorry," despite her sister already having left the room. She trudged over to the window overlooking the city, resting her forehead against the cold glass. The cool feeling helped ease her nerves, and after a few minutes she was able to walk downstairs, her ears only angled slightly backward. Poking her head through her parents' door, she saw her mother and sister sitting together on the bed, staring sadly at a picture frame. Swallowing back her pride, Astraea stepped inside and said quietly, "I'm sorry I yelled at you, Emily. And I'm sorry I didn't try to help you, Mama." Her ears flattened against her long black hair in her guilt, and she stared at the floor with her heterochromic eyes.
"You said you have a family, Mr. Williams?" Dr. Stein asked curiously, staring intently at Eider where he sat awkwardly across from him. "Yes, sir," Eider replied, his hands clasped together on his lap in his nervousness. "I have a wife and two daughters." The doctor nodded, and continued, "And what about the brother of yours I've heard about? Er, Leo, is that right?" "Liam," Eider corrected him, mildly annoyed that the man who would hopefully become his boss couldn't even remember the name of his brother, whom he'd mentioned several times over the phone. "Yes, Liam is a football player. He is married to a Greek woman named Thalia, and they have one son and twins on the way." Dr. Stein stared at him with great interest. "But sir, I'm really not sure what this has to do with the job," Eider added, feeling very uncomfortable. His future boss just shrugged and smiled, unconcerned. "How about we move to a different topic?" Dr. Stein suggested, and Eider breathed a sigh of relief. "Tell me about some of your recent tasks at the Emory Hospital. Any particularly hard patients?" Eider nodded, remembering a woman with pancreatic cancer who had begged him to save her life. "Well, there was a patient a few months ago with pancreatic cancer who all my coworkers were sure wouldn't make it. But she reminded me of an old friend, so I wanted to at least do my best to help her. After hours of work, I was able to eliminate the tumor, and she's still alive and healthy now, despite the predicted number of days she had remaining having been 3." Dr. Stein appeared very impressed with this, a smile stretched wide across his face. "Well, Mr. Williams, this interview has helped me immensely. Before meeting you there were several other candidates I was considering, but you have confirmed my choice. You've got the job, young man." Eider grinned and shook Dr. Stein's hand, more pleased than he could say. "Thank you so much sir!" he said, and picked up his briefcase. After a few more quick words Eider was able to leave the office, desperate to get home to Mavis.
