xxxA young she-cat slipped under the prickly branches of a hedge, scrabbling at the cool, damp earth out to the other side. Jumping to her paws, she continued towards the barn, the grass soft beneath her paws. But out of the bushes, came a shadowy figure, his malignant amber eyes glittering coldly in the darkness. Her lip curled at the sight of him, and her claws sank deep into the ground below. "What? Not happy to see me, Buttercup?" The stranger cooed, drawing himself up to meet the she-cat's brilliant leaf-green eyes, which blazed with hatred and distrust. The smoky gray tom continued, "Did you think you would get away without telling me?" He questioned, his voice suddenly sharp, staring pointedly at the kittypet. "I didn't need to tell you," she snapped, "you may be their father by blood, but I have a new mate now." She spoke loudly and defiantly, puffing out her chest fur. He stepped forward until he towered over her. She met his gaze steadily, only to get a sharp blow across her cheek. Buttercup hissed, feeling blood ooze from the scratch on her cheek. He bent down until his hot, sticky breath touched her ear fur. "I will take my kits when they're old enough. You can hand them over willingly, or I will take them by force." Without another word, the tom whirled around and plunged back into the undergrowth, leaving the queen standing in the darkness, frozen with shock and disbelief.

xxxFour young kits sleep softly in the nook of their mother's belly, their tiny paws clutching her soft brown fur. The warm New-leaf breeze swirled around the barn, carrying the sweet scents of blooming flowers fresh grass. The peaceful sound of birds chirping and the wind blowing was interrupted by the patter of paws. A ginger tom quickly pushed his way into the barn, the feel of anxiety seemed to come off him in waves as he made his way over to the new mother. He gazed down at the little bundles of joy, yellow eyes wide as he looked at his kits, then at his mate. Her warm, sunny smile made him feel light and bubbly, while her gorgeous green eyes sent shivers down his spine. "Well..?" Asked Buttercup, moving her tail just out of the way. "They're beautiful." As her mate erupted into a loud, uncontrollable purr, he bent down and nuzzled his kits. Looking just over his shoulder, she thought she could see a pair of eyes glinting in the shadow of some bushes, malice glittering within their deep amber depths. Drawing in a sharp breath, she pried her gaze away from the woodland, but she couldn't shake the feeling of overwhelming loneliness. For a split second, she thought about giving them up and have another litter. But at the thought of that, she pressed closer to her kits. They are my kits, I will not back down. Come and get me. She thought as she lifted her chin defiantly, staring deep into the forest. "Is something wrong, dear?" Rumbled her mate, his voice edged with concern."No, Ace." She replied.

"Everything is just fine."

Chapter 1

xxxThree kits scampered past leaving one kit to sit back on the hay, lying beside a ginger tom; her father. She pressed up against him, breathing in his familiar scent. "Mocha, don't you wanna go play outside with your brothers?" He asked quietly, his voice soft and soothing. Mocha sat for a moment, kneading the ground with her paws. "I don't know..I wanna wait for mama." Replied the kit sweetly, looking up at her father with her bright yellow eyes. Her father got a troubled look on his face before getting to his paws, leaping off the hay bale. "Kits! Come here!" He called the four kits towards him and brought them close with a sweep of his tail. He seemed more happy than earlier, but there was an odd scent that she had never smelled before coming off of him."I'm going to go find your mother, you all stay in the barn, alright?" Meteor leaped to his paws, his almost identical dark ginger pelt bushed up. "I wanna come with you!" Protested the tom, lashing his tail furiously. Mocha eyed the two. Her father always was patient, even with her brother, who in her opinion, was really loud and obnoxious."You can when you're older, but for now, you stay here." He said sternly, and without another word, whirled around and bounded out of the barn. One of her brothers quickly snatched Meteor by the tail and heaved them back until he fell to his paws. "What was that for?" He demanded, his voice a hoarse hiss as he got to his paws, examining his fluffy tail for any sign of damage. Mocha let out an amused snort. Her brother, Tundra, stepped towards him, his pale green eyes glinting with mischief. "I couldn't just let our baby brother go out and get himself in trouble." He mewed, talking down to the smaller tom. "Come here, you rabbit-brain!" He snarled, pouncing on the gray tom.

xxx"Kits!" Cried their father, bringing the playfighting to a halt. Something was wrong. Squeezing out from under her brother Birch, she heaved herself onto her paws and trotted towards him, her curly-furred tail twitching with unease. The closer she got, the more she could smell a gross, rancid stench and see the visible dismay on her father's face. The tension seemed so thick you could cut it with one claw. As the four gathered around him, he finally took his own seat in front of them, inhaling slowly. "We have to move." The group broke out into quick, frantic whispers. "But why?" Mocha spoke up, finally asking the question that seemed to be on all their minds. The ginger tom shifted his weight, looking as if he were searching for something. "It's not safe here." He said at last, his voice slow and steady. "What about mama? Where's she?" Questioned Tundra, jumping to his paws, followed by Meteor. "Your mother isn't coming back," his voice shook with effort, but he went on, "an evil cat killed her, she was trying to protect you." The group was gripped by a shocked silence at the news and Mocha could feel her head begin to spin. This is too much! She shook her head in disbelief."You'll see her again someday." Rumbled their father, trying his best to comfort his kits. Mocha managed to pry her gaze from the barn floor to look at her siblings. Nodding slowly, Ace got to his paws and lead the kits out of the barn and towards a mound of freshly dug up dirt, rocks and flowers lie on top of it. Each kit said their goodbyes and when it was Mocha's turn, she cast her gaze up at the darkening sky, just above, the first star was appearing in the night sky. Pressing her nose against her mother's final resting place, she shuffled away and towards her father, looking up at him, her yellow eyes brimming with sorrow. "Come here little one." He mewed, pulling her close. Burying her muzzle into his ginger pelt, she let out a soft, muffled wail of grief. Dark clouds formed in the sky and heavy droplets of rain began to fall, as if even their ancestors were mourning and the she-kit's quiet sobs were drowned out by the thrumming of the rain as it hit the ground.

Chapter 2

Postby HibiscusBlossom » Fri Mar 16, 2018 7:46 am

xxxThey had been travelling for about a moon. Mocha's paws ached and her sides heaved with effort. "Dad, can we stop yet?" Whined her brother Birch, who looked especially tired. He was dragging his paws and she could see that his small legs were trembling. The ginger tom glanced around at the surroundings. They were right in the middle of a large moorland, swathes of heather and long grass dappled the seemingly endless slopes and hills. With one last look around, he let out a grumble before begrudgingly sitting down. "Alright, but the strongest have to go hunt." He shifted his gaze from her exhausted little brother to her and Meteor. "You two go out and hunt, yowl if you need anything." Meowed her father, before finally lying down next to birch, who let out a soft sigh of relief as he rested in the cool grass. With a nod, Mocha set off with Meteor, eventually splitting up.

Mocha slipped silently through the long grass, the following the warm scent of rabbit. As she came upon the creature, she crouched down, ready to pounce, only to have the flattened grass beneath her paws let out a quiet crunch! The rabbit's head shot up immediately and it scampered into the grass, the she-kit quickly following suit, only to hear a squeal quickly get cut off. She pushed through the long grass, her pelt prickling with unease. Blinking in confusion, she saw a grey tabby standing there, the rabbit clamped firmly in his jaws, his amber eyes scorching her curly pelt, which looked suspiciously like her own. He padded towards her, dropping the creature at her paws. "Was this yours?" Questioned the tom, his voice smooth and sweet as he spoke to the young she-kit. "Yeah, thank you for catching it." She murmured, bending down to pick it up, only to be stopped as the tom placed one paw on it. "So what are you doing out here, hunting such a large rabbit, do you have a family?" He questioned, eyeing her like a piece of prey being dangled just out of reach. She shifted her weight uneasily, but his cool voice seemed to draw her closer. She nodded quickly. "I gotta take it to them, we're really tired."The tom nodded. "Surely you don't live out here, rabbits are very hard to catch." Mocha nodded once more. "I don't like it, it's always either really hot because of the sun or really cold because of the rain. I mean, I got a rabbit before." The tom got a look of awe on his face. "Really? Gosh,I'm so terrible at it, you must be very swift." He cooed, voice warm like honey. Each time she looked at the tom, he felt oddly familiar, he looked very similar with his distinct curly pelt, not only that, he was a grey tabby, just like Tundra. He pulled his paw away and let her pick it up. "Well, I best be off." As he turned away, Mocha's head shot up. "Oh, I'm Mocha by the way, who are you?" The tom looked over his shoulder, his piercing amber eyes glinting. "My name is Spider." He rumbled, before turning away and padding through the long grass without a sound. She stood there for a second, half in confusion, half in shock, before picking up the rabbit and making her way back to her family.

xxxAs she approached, she noticed that Meteor had caught at least three mice and she'd place her large rabbit into the pile with them. "That's huge! How'd you catch it?" Questioned Birch, already starting to dig into it with Tundra."Oh, I didn't, some nice tom named Spider caught it for me after I lost it." Her father immediately jumped to his paws, the fur along his spine bristling, claws unsheathed, eyes wide. "Did you just say Spider? What did he look like?" He demanded, now only a whisker length away from Mocha's face. "I-I--Well I mean he was a grey tabby with am-" Immediately, he whipped around and started padding away. "We gotta keep moving." He snapped, not even waiting for the kits to come-to. Mocha had to trot to keep up with him, the others close behind. "He's a terrible, terrible cat and must not be trusted." He snarled.

Chapter 3

Postby HibiscusBlossom » Fri Mar 16, 2018 2:15 pm

xxxTheir paws pounded against the ground as they ran, their each breath quicker than the last, the roar of their blood in their ears drowning out all other sounds. She didn't even know why she was running, but they did,as far as they could, quick as can be, as if something were chasing them down. She couldn't get answers out of her father, though she could tell from the look in his eyes it was something awful. They were wild with terror, hatred, regret. Long grass slapped relentlessly at her muzzle as they charged through it and she could barely see, but followed the thick, heavy scent of fear coming off of her father. Seemingly out of nowhere, Spider leaped from the tall grass and tackled Ace, disappearing back within the shelter of the tall golden stalks. The siblings all skidded to a halt, looking around frantically for any sign of either of them, all they could hear were distant spits and yowls. The four stood in complete silence as they listened for any signs of their father. "...did you think I wouldn't find you?" Demanded one voice, only to get a hiss in response. Mocha could hear a thud, then the patter of paws as her father burst out of the grass, blood trickling from a wound on his forehead, limping. He started pushing them forward. "Keep running!" He ordered.

xxxThe family pressed close together as they ran, looking every which-way as they ran. Oddly, they could hear the sound of water and slowed down, they found themselves peering over the edge of a gorge, a raging river at the bottom."I think we can make it, we'll loose him if we do." Meteor was already backing up, crouching down for a moment before propelling himself forward, pounding towards it. Just as he was about to go off the edge, he leaped, clearing the majority of the gorge, but landed short and scrabbled at the edge a moment before heaving himself up. "Alright, so the cat on the other side has to catch or help up the other. Tundra, you go next." Tundra made it over too with the help of Meteor, and so did Birch. As Mocha backed up, her heart nearly skipped a beat. Swallowing hard, she hurtled towards the edge, feeling the ground hard beneath her feet as she raced forward. The roar of the raging river below seeming to push her forward. Bunching up her muscles, she sprang across, feeling weightless for a split second, before landing heavily on the edge. She scrabbled at the earth, eyes wide as she stared at her brothers, her legs dangling under her, the water's hungry growls making her feel helpless. "Help me!" She cried."Calm down!" Snapped Tundra as he and Meteor heaved her up and onto solid ground. She heaved a sigh of relief, lying there for a moment before turning to help her father. Just behind him, she saw a flash of grey, then saw Spider racing towards him. Oh no.. The kits began urging their father to jump as their attacker grew closer and finally, he jumped. Mocha reached out for him, Birch at her side, but felt her heart drop as his paw just skimmed hers and he started falling down, his echoing cry sending a shiver down her spine. Spider jumped neatly across, landing beside the shaken cats, peering over the edge as a splash was heard. His head bobbed up and down a moment, before disappearing under the raging waters.

Chapter 4

Postby HibiscusBlossom » Sat Mar 17, 2018 1:50 am

xxx"Everybody is gone.." Murmured birch, his eyes wide as he stared down into the gorge. Spider's expression darkened into a look of concern. "Now now, it's not like he was your real father anyways." Suddenly, the broken group became aware of Spider's presence, and were looking him up and down. The rogue let out a groan. "Really? Do you not see it?" He padded over to Tundra, pacing around him before standing at his side, resting his tail along his shoulders."Ace was not your father." Mewed the tom, who's curly grey pelt was almost identical to Tundra's. It all came crashing down. She saw it now, the curly pelt, the build. Neither of her parents had curly fur like they did. Birch blinked his warm amber eyes at the newcomer, before jumping to his paws. "Why didn't you stay with our mother?" Spider rolled his eyes, making his way towards him, he had an odd air around him. "She was a foolish cat. I tried to come visit, truly I did, but a moon ago she attacked me and well.." He almost looked genuinely sad. Almost. Mocha backed away from the edge, her eyes wide with horror. "You killed her!" She spat, curling her lip, hatred bubbled up inside her, threatening to boil over. Spider looked shocked. "Really? Accusing me of murder? It was only an accident, maybe more so than letting that poor soul fall to his death." Suddenly, all eyes were on her. Spider took a pace forward, his muscles rippled with each powerful step he took. An overwhelming sense of dread washed over her. "Who told him about me and freaked him out? Who's job was it to catch him when he jumped?" She staggered backwards, her sibling's watchful eyes scorching through her like fire. "He was injured..He.." She sputtered, suddenly unable to speak. Someone help me! She begged, but Spider pressed on. "She's trying to cover it up by saying he was injured! Shameful." He snarled. Meteor jumped to her side, staring pointedly at the tom. "Leave her alone! She did nothing wrong, right guys?" As Meteor looked to Birch, he backed up behind the rogue, then to Tundra, who avoided his gaze and said nothing. "There's no one to help you now." Spider's low hiss seemed to echo in her ears, but Meteor looked the most affected. "You are not my kits." He growled as he glared at her ginger-pelted brother. He started pushing forward, causing the two to start backing up, right towards the edge of the gorge. Meteor shrieked as he reared up and lashed out at the rogue's muzzle, who let out a loud yowl. "You were never my son, you were always that..that rat's!"Then, he did it. Spider rammed his head into her brother's belly and sent him flying down into the gorge. "Tundra, Birch, help me!" She wailed, causing Birch to look utterly conflicted, but he knew that he may share the same fate if he helped. Tundra spoke up. "He's all we have left, and he's nothing like Ace, he doesn't run from his problems," he stepped forward until he stood just a tail length away from her, "he faces them." Then, Spider clamped his jaws around her scruff and held her over the edge, she shut her eyes. "You always reminded me of your mother, your tabby pelt, your smile.." He loosened his grip and she swung in the air, trembling, she let out a feeble cry. "..Pathetic." He growled. Then, she couldn't feel his grip on her scruff anymore and air began to swirl around her as she plummeted towards the raging white waters.

Chapter 5

Postby HibiscusBlossom » Sun Mar 18, 2018 7:55 am

xxxShe landed with a splash, her back stinging from the impact. The water swirled and churned around her furiously as she struggled to the surface. Managing to push her head in the water, she drew in a sharp breath before being dragged back under the water by the current. Her lungs stung and as she was thrashed around like prey, she slammed against a rock, opening her mouth to let out a cry, only to suck in water. She resurfaced, coughing and sputtering, gulping up the air greedily. She propelled herself forward until she could cling onto a rock, which was wet and slippery and she struggled to get a pawhold as she climbed her way up. All she could see was the wide, raging river around her and the steep sides of the gorge, a vertical, muddy wall. Mocha slowly looked up to where Spider peered over the edge, Birch looking utterly disturbed and horrified by what had just happened and Tundra looking just as cold as his father, but even he seemed shocked. Spider walked downriver until he was on the ledge just above her, he barked something at Tundra, who trotted away and came back with a large stick. The grey tabby flung it towards her and it came hurtling towards the she-cat. Luckily it landed short and smacked her on the shoulder, but she slipped on the rock and tumbled back into the turbulent white waters. She clung to the branch, looking over her shoulder as wild screeches broke out behind her. Birch was latched onto Spider's back, his claws curled deep into his pelt as he bit down on the back of his neck.He was flung off and was about to be pushed into the water when he nimbly leaped to the side and pelted away. Mocha let out a yowl of triumph as her brother sprinted away. She continued to float down the river through the day, cold, wet and scared.

xxx"Get her out before she freezes to death!" Said one voice, it sounded oddly far away. As she began to wake up, she began to shiver. Her pelt was soaked, lungs and throat stinging, body trembling. She opened one eye, her vision was foggy and for a split second, she saw a starry outline standing beside two cats on the riverbank, but when she blinked, it was gone. A seal point tom leaped into the river, wading towards her stick, snatching the end of it and dragging her to shore.A ginger she-cat quickly snatched her off the branch. "She's frozen, start licking her fur backwards." Ordered the she-cat. She was placed gently on the ground and shut her eyes as the strangers began lapping at her pelt. "That should be good, grab her and run as fast as you can to camp, I'll be close behind." She felt the hot breath of whom she assumed was the tom against her scruff as she was picked up off the ground. She was too dazed and confused to feel much.

xxxMocha's eyes slowly flickered open and for a moment, she felt like she was at home, lying curled up against her mother's stomach, only to be bombarded by strange sounds and scents. She could hear many cats outside and she didn't know whoever was lying next to her. She looked up, it was a pale ginger she-cat, her copper eyes round with concern, only to flood with relief at the sight of her awake. "Don't panic, little one, you're safe now." Now she recognized it. It was one of the cats from earlier, who pulled her out of the river. "Where am I? Who are you?" The she-cat looked at her, smiling softly. "I'm Eveningflame and this," She flicked her tail towards the entrance to the den, where she could hear hushed, concerned voices outside, a waterfall could be seen at the far corner, "is Valleyclan."

Epilogue

Postby HibiscusBlossom » Fri Apr 06, 2018 12:40 pm

xxx A massive tabby she-cat crept through the undergrowth, bushing her way through a swathe of brambles, her pawsteps light and quiet as she trotted through the forest, towards the sound of the rushing river. Her dark, curly pelt barely visible among the dark shadows of the forest. The branches of the trees above reached out, light only shining through the bright green leaves. Despite this, the forest was still warm and full of life. The tabby swerved around a bush, ears pricked, there was the faintest of scuffling underneath the shelter of some ferns. She took the long way around, making sure her scent would not blow down and frighten the prey. The moment she saw a flash of movement, she launched herself forward, landing square on what she now knew was a squirrel, nipping at its spine. Picking up the fresh-kill, she stood up, making her way towards camp when she heard a soft voice speak behind her. "Nice catch!" A pale ginger tabby trotted up to meet her, the thick, overwhelming stench of herbs clinging to her pelt, different leaves and flowers clamped in her jaws. "Oh, good morning, Eveningflame!" Mewed the warrior, flicking her curly tail. "Gorgeous day, isn't it?" Eveningflame nodded her agreement, looking around at the forest that teemed with new life. "Do you ever think of your family, Furledstem?" Questioned the medicine cat, fixing her copper eyes on the warrior. Furledstem heaved a sigh, gently placing her prey on the forest floor, sitting down next to her. She shut her eyes, thinking back.

xxxHer apprentice years had been tough, it took her awhile to even trust the cats there and her fear of water didn't help. Flintstar himself mentored her, saying that there was no tricky apprentice he could not smooth out. In a way, she guessed he was right. She had managed to find her place in the clan as an apprentice. Her mentor was like a father to her. Soon enough she became a warrior, but the horrid nightmares of plummeting down the gorge and floundering helplessly in the raging waters still haunt her. She never saw her father again, nor Meteor, but she hoped that at least on of them got away.

xxxFurledstem shrugged. "Sometimes, but my place is here, in the clan." Eveningflame looked content, nodding. She got to her paws, resting her tail along her shoulders for a moment. Then, the two she-cats walked back to camp, a comfortable silence between them.
