oops -Here 'ya go!! (My dad literally gave me an hour to do this in preparation for a writing prompt test I'm doing next weekend which hopefully excuses the fact that this is so rushed XD)

"And the British Colony first came in..." Melanie couldn't hear the rest.Or maybe she chose not to. It wasn't like they needed to know all this stuff. She sat at her desk, doodling in her workbook as usual in history class. No wonder she always got a D on her report for it. "Alright now, class, close your files and listen up! I'm the first teacher to be able to announce this to you guys, after all!" The teacher clapped his hands wildly, knowing that some of the students weren't paying attention. Melanie looked up to see Mr Watts staring right at her, his half-moon glasses lowered down to the bridge of his nose.

She gritted her teeth and sat up straight. Oops.
"Willowton High has been given the privilege of offering three different part-time jobs for you all - fourteen and up." The crowd o students started whispering and cheering all around. "The businesses have had many young workers fired for stealing their ideas," he muttered, narrowing his eyes at everyone. "Although they knew they could trust some, quote-unquote, 'innocent young minds'. So, now, the part you've all been - silently waiting for..." Mr Watts grouched. "The three jobs are these - early newspaper runs on a bicycle, particularly to the elderly couples down the street, running multiple errands at a bread factory such as bread slicing, and being an assistant for the principals and teachers for the staff room. Now, the pay is varied between which job you choose, but they are around the same, except the job working at the staff office obviously brings a higher pay." he grinned. Melanie scowled. Not enough teacher's pets, huh? she thought, although she quite liked the idea of the school offering jobs to the students.

A few moments later, the bell rung for lunch-break and it was total chaos. Kids screaming and running around everywhere, talking about the new job offerings. Melanie finally got to her locker through the swarm of people and met her friends Martin and Sarah there. Martin was a brainiac who loved conspiracy theories and chocolate. They'd known each other since kindergarten and luckily they had got into the same high school. He had dark scraggly hair and bright orange shoes. he always wore a brown jacket, for some reason.

Melanie had only met Sarah that year since she was new - she had come all the way from England. They sat next to each other in class and did their homework together. She was quite shy, but good at writing and even debating for some reason. It was the only time she liked to talk in front of the class. Melanie liked her, but she was sometimes kind of corny. She had beautiful glossy blonde hair and wore long-sleeved tops and short skirts.

"So... did you hear about the job application thing?" Melanie asked them, stuffing her file into her locker and bringing out her lunch. "Oh my gosh, yes!" Sarah beamed. "I love the idea of helping the teachers out in the staff room! And getting paid for it!"
Martin slapped his palm over his face. "Really? I wanna work at an office! Like a secret agent! Wouldn't that be cool?"
Melanie frowned."Oh. I wanted to work at the bread factory."
"The bread factory?!" Sarah and Martin screeched. "Why?"
"Um, well... it's a factory! And it has those bread slicing things! You know!"
"Wait, it does? Ms Claron made it sound so boring!" Sarah seemed intrigued. "She lied."
"Maybe she's worked at one before," Martin chimed in.
"Well, I want to try it anyway," Melanie answered, "whatever you think."

There was a sign-up list in the hallway with a pen attached to it with a string. Melanie took it and signed her name in the box where it said, 'Bread Factory Assistant'. And sure enough, there were only one or two other names there, whereas lots of other students had applied for the other jobs.
Melanie sighed, then stopped herself. No, Mel. You do what you think is right. You want to work there, right?

In Hass class, the last period of the school day, an announcement over the loudspeaker came through - "All students who signed up for Office assistant - please come to Mrs Hendrige's room immediately."
About half the class disappeared, leaving the teacher pretty infuriated, seeing as they were doing a test.

Half an hour later, the students who offered for the bread factory job were called out. Melanie slowly pulled in her chair as she walked out as the only one in the class to sign up for it.
In Mrs Hendrge's office, there were three students waiting for her. "Okay, so sign here and list two reasons why you believe that you should have the job," she handed them each a sheet of paper. "Although whatever you write I'm quite sure you'll get in any way, seeing as there are so few of you," she winked. "So I'll just say this now. The job starts next Thursday at 10 am sharp, and the address is 127 Applesmith Court, Willowton."

After a weekend and a half of waiting, it was Thursday morning. It was also cool because she would miss an hour of school.
Her mother drove her there, and she realised she was a minute late. "Good enough," she giggled nervously.
The rest of the new recruits had just arrived, and they were all now talking to the managers of the bread factory. It was a huge metal block on the outside, but on the inside, it was more complex than the inside of, say, the human body. Stack Harwood, who called himself the 'President of Willowton Bread-and-Dough Factory', showed them everything they needed to know about the factory, although surprisingly most of it was just 'don't touch this because this is what it can do,' kind of thing, which bored Melanie. "Then what do we do?" Melanie asked as politely as she could. "I'd like to get to work as soon as possible'.

Apparently, all they were allowed to do was slice bread. At least it's with a bread-slicing machine thing, Melanie thought, pressing buttons. Stack and most of the other staff members had left the four of them to slice the bread and gone off to a meeting. Melanie continued to press random buttons on the machine with boredom. "Why did I sign up for thi-"
"Hey! Stop that! You'll damage the interior of the dough-slicer, little miss!" A voice shouted, which made Melanie jump. "George? Did you hear that?" She turned to one of the other kids. "Hear what?" he replied.

"ME!" The voice shouted again, and this time Melanie knew where the voice was coming from - right behind her. "What are you doing now, lil' miss, 'ya trying to ignore me? Turn 'round!"
So she did. And there was a tiny little... humanoid standing there, giving her orders. "I'm in charge 'ere, you know! That Stacko-brain thinks he is but does he know anythin' 'bout making bread? NO! We're from the Doughammies tribe! We invented bread!"

Melanie stood there, shocked. "There are more...of you?" She whispered.
Now the little man - the Doughammie - looked insulted. "Yes! And they work for me, too!" Suddenly there were little people everywhere as he pointed to them. How could she not see them before? They were like miniature gnomes, working their miniature butts off as he gave them orders. Now, this was weird. "So." He continued. "I haven't introduced myself. I am Breadnought, the leader of the Doughammies. Stacko-brain doesn't even know I exist! Only humans who really know and appreciate bread can see and hear us Doughammies. And I believe they know how everything in this factory works! That's why you looked so bored. Oh well then. Cook up a storm! You're Melanie, right? Doughammie Melanie!"
