Dipperdust woke early in the morning, stretching lazily in the medicine cats den. He looked over to his left, surprised to see Skystem still sleeping. She was usually up way before he was. Maybe he went to sleep early last night, could only be it.
He carefully picked his way over her, deciding to sit near the dens entrance. At first glance he thought he had seen the camp wrong, but there was no mistaking what he saw.
Snow had piled up everywhere.
It was an unusual sight, for him at least. Snow was something he had always known to come once in Leafbare, and never until then. Here however, snow was always prominent. It took a lot of getting used to, and he envied the other cats thick fur sometimes. His thin fur was better when it was always hot..
Dipperdust set one foot in the powdery coldness and instantly yanked it back. How could anyone walk around in this?
“You're up early,” Skystem purred from behind him. She sniffed at his leg. “And your leg is getting better!”
“I'm glad, as much as I love this place I love to stretch my legs more! Even in this uh..snow.” he waved his tail to indicate the outside.
Skystem chuckled, “You'll get used to it, even the kits have to, and they're so young. You'll be fine.”
“Hope so, I wanted to see Morninghope today. We had this wonderful conversation yesterday, and I think we're friends now!” he smiled, the thought gave him happy butterflies.
“Are you and Patchpelt not friends? You two seemed pretty close.”
“Well,” Dipperdust hesitated, trying to pick his words carefully. “We are. But it's a very complicated friendship, so I don't count it as a full one.” he shook his head.
“I see, I feel where you are coming from. With the whole complicated friends thing.” Skystem rolled a loose pebble around feebly, trying to hide her growing discomfort.
Dipperdust noticed anyway, and scooted an inch away from her. “Sorry, I know how you like your space.” he smiled.
“Oh no it's not you! I enjoy little conversations, they're easier to handle than with a big group of cats.” She flattened her ears. “It’s just one of my friends. Do you know Maplespirit?”
“I believe so, she was talking with you and a little apprentice just the other day wasn't she?” he asked.
“Yup, that's her. She's always expecting me to come out and socialize, when that's very hard for me. She means no harm, I understand that. I just...wish she would understand. I’m not as outgoing as her, I can't flirt with any cat I desire to. I can't make pleasant conversation at any point in time, I'm shy and it's painful.” Skystem averted her eyes to the ground, embarrassed. She hadn't meant to say all of that.
“I'm sorry…” she mumbled.
Dipperdust draped his tail over her side, “It's fine, I don't mind hearing out other's problems. And I think Maplespirit just wants you to get better at talking to other cats. She's just going about this in the wrong way, and you have to tell her that or she'll keep persisting.”
“What if it hurts her feelings?” Skystem mumbled, looking up at him bleakly.
“I'm sure she'll understand if she goes through all this trouble.” Dipperdust stood, sucking in a fresh crisp breath of cold air and carefully trotted out into the snow. “I'll be back later!” Skystem watched him go up the cliff face and into the warriors den, most likely to find Morninghope.
If only she could muster up the courage to do that and talk to Maplespirit.
The she-cat shook her head, heading to the back to go check up on her catmint. As if there was ever a chance of that happening.

“Hey Vinetail?”
Vinetail halted her grooming of Jayflight and glanced up at Spiderheart. Eveningkit and Nettlekit were following her, the latter of the two trying to pin down their mother's tail.
“Have you seen Dawnkit anywhere? I've looked in all the dens and couldn't find her. I'm worried she might have wandered out of camp.” Despite her calm stance Spiderheart’s tone was laced with worry.
Jayflight shifted, slowly coming to a sitting position, “I saw Mixedkit and Harvestkit go with Ferretpaw and Quailpaw out to the river. Maybe Dawnkit went too.” She yawned.
Vinetail’s ear twitched, “Why were they going to the river?”
“Those boys wanted to show the kits how fishing was done, I told them to be back by sunhigh. Hopefully they'll listen.” She nudged Vinetail with her nose and walked off to speak with Ashengaze, their conversation muddled.
“Can we go to the river too mama?” Nettlekit asked, now bouncing on his little paws.
“I wanna see the apprentices fish, it sounds like fun!” Eveningkit smiled.
Spiderheart huffed, gathering the two kits up with her tail. “I don't know, Eveningkit can barely handle snow as it is, and there's a lot out beyond camp…”
Vinetail hummed, “I think they'll be fine Spiderheart, you can always go with and watch them you know. If you're that scared, I mean.”
“I can't, I'm cleaning the snow in camp today. I don't want to neglect my duty, even as a queen.” she took one quick glance around at all the snow piling up.
There was certainly a lot to do, and if it was weighing down Spiderheart this much..
“I can clean in your place Spiderheart.” she mewled. “I don't mind, I wasn't doing anything particularly exciting today anyway."
Spiderheart frowned, “Are you sure Vinetail-"
Nettlekit and Eveningkit whined, trying to pull their mother along by her tail.
“Come on mama! Let Vinetail clean! I wanna see the river!” Nettlekit yowled.
The she-cat sighed, while Vinetail chuckled quietly. “Those kits of yours are a pawful.”
“Tell me about it,” Spiderheart rolled her eyes. “But if you're sure you want to do this, I suppose I can go watch everyone by the river..”
“Yay!” Nettlekit beamed and made a beeline for the entrance, Eveningkit hot on his heels. Spiderheart had to say a quick goodbye to Vinetail and caught up to her kits, scolding them for running ahead of her.
Vinetail stayed in that position for a few more moments, thinking of the possibility that she may become a mother one day. Just the thought of having kits made her head spin, she was much too stock to take care of them herself. She didn't even have a mate yet.
“Maybe for another time, Starclan willing.” she thought, smiling.
