Honestly, for me, it's all about the creating. Planning a family out, giving them a story, building their house, creating another family with the intention of interweaving, repeat... I'm constantly starting projects and never finishing them due to getting distracted by a new idea. I have a woman who I was gonna make a super villian. She was a young adult and now she's the eldery agency clerk XD
But my favourite project has been the Johnny Depp/Marilyn Manson bromance plotline I had going. Accidentally made Johnny Depp and went with it. Basically, I made them live together with their matching tattoos. Manson, the musical genius, and Depp, the comedian (closest to actor you can get). Worked pretty well. Well then one day, I accidentally made A Pimp Named Slickback from The Boondocks and decided to make a brothel. One "entertainer" did it because it made her feel empowered, the other had daddy issues. Then I made them a bar to do their business at with some bedrooms. Well, Depp decides in his AI to become a regular of the bar, and of course he has to fall in love with the hot blonde with daddy issues, right? Well they end up getting married and she moves in with him and Manson. Has triplets. All boys. All ginger. Don't know why Sims genetics thought the guy with dark brown hair and the woman with platinum blonde hair would have ginger kids, but it did. They're toddlers and she gets pregnant again. During Depp's birthday party, she decides to give birth. Twins (at this point, I reached max household limit). Both girls. Both freaking gingers. Changed all of their hair colour. All five of my demon ginger toddlers. No "On Ley Line" lot attribute either, by the way, this was all crazy random happenstance. Long story short, she cheated on Depp, they got divorced, and now Depp and Manson are married with a big ole saint bernard living in The Marilyn Mansion™.
I also have done the Kim Possible gang, complete with Wade and a well painted cat naked mole rat named Rufus, all outfits inspired by the show, and matching voices! I also tried doing that with the Organization VIII from Kingdom Hearts, but after only being six members through with over two hours of effort, I gave up XD
I do create stories a lot with the sims... (This is why I like the options Get Together gives to make the sims hang out with other easily: it is a way for them to meet the sims I want them to meet, not random people!)
Though I don't use real people to base my sims on. I don't why, but it makes me feel weird when I am doing that. But I have to admit that your Johnny Depp story is hilarious!
In real life someone who is blond can have a red child with someone who is dark haired, if they all have a hidden red hair gene (but 5 red haired children would be defying the odds... Maybe the woman was red-haired but dyed her hair?)
I build really complicated worlds... When I start a new game, I modify all the existing world so it looks like what I want, and the sims look like how I want them to look like... And I imagine backgrounds story for all of them.
If you knew what the genealogic trees of the current families I am using looked like...
I couldn't even describe my current game in detail as it would be too long. as every think started with this quite crazy girl scientist who married a famous writer and had 9 children with him (all named with complicated names of historical characters x). All of my sims have very unusual names :p), and her brother who has a more simple life, a wife and three children. Now I'm playing with all of them, their family, their friends, and the family of their friends XD.
One of my favorite among them is the fourth child of the scientist, a girl with a lot of imagination who convinced a more than 2000 years old vampire to transform her in order to gain immortality. Now she owns a vet clinic (as she likes nature and animals more than human), and owns a dog that she keeps eternally young with her knowledge of veterinary medecine and her powers. After experiencing her sexual orientation, she married one her best friend's brother, a handsome young man who loves nature and adventure. He accepted the fact that she was a vampire, and asked her to transform him too. She died once, to try to save one of her brother, but he resurected her. They have four children together, still toddlers. She would like to become a Vampire Queen, and hopes that all her sibling will accept to become vampire, because they have a strong bond in the family and she does not want to watch them growing old and die.

I sometimes make the characters from my favorite books in the Sims (but in separate games), and recreate the story. I really miss the features of the Sims 2 that allowed us to build entire neighborhood! At this time, I could recreate the cities and the places from the books too... With the sims 3 it was really long to do this because it meant you had to demolish a world first, but now in the Sims 4 it has become impossible... *sight*
I also create the characters from my original stories with the Sims, it helps me to visualize them, and sometimes it even gives me some Ideas for the books I'm writing (Ideas that I usually forget because they are weird, but it's still fun)
