Their desert home, close as it was to the single wide river which nourished the nearby land, did little for the sand and scrub which made up their territory. Most of the cacti had lost their flowers as well, so the landscape was an almost unbroken vista of tan with the occasional brown or dusky green feature.
Lionstar was used to this weather and it didn't bother him the way it did the others. His family had lived on these lands long before his little group banded together, and the newcomers needed time to adapt. Mostly the kind-hearted leader felt bad for Snowfoot, a long-coated Persian-type who was one of the most recent additions to the clan. Some days she merely lay beneath a rocky outcropping, lying on her side and panting, the weather's effects were so intense.
The youngest clan members, Owlpaw and Flamepaw, were doing comparatively well. They spent much of the day playing together, practicing wrestling and stalking like most apprentices tend to do. Flamepaw was much older and nearly always bested her companion, but she knew the wisdom of letting Owlpaw win occasionally in order to build up his confidence.
The new apprentices proved to be especially helpful because Owlpaw had joined the clan by tagging along behind his older sister, Foxtail. As a warrior, naturally she volunteered to complete his training, beginning with hunting. At first Lionstar was hesitant, feeling that a mentor from within the clan would help secure a sense of loyalty, but he found that he had nothing to worry about: the two had starved and scavenged for so long that they treated their new home as if it were the clan of their birth, so loyal were they to Lionstar's smallest instruction.
Flamepaw and Snowfoot had also arrived together, and after basic testing by Raccoonmask, it was determined that Flamepaw was fully trained and merely on need of the ritual which would secure her status as an official warrior.
Lionstar's big decision last season - breaking the warrior code and clan tradition to allow medicine cats the right to have families - had already taken effect. Feathercurl was now expecting kittens, though the time of their arrival would be moons away.
Sometimes his mind wandered again to family matters, but his heart was not in it as it had been when he himself had fallen in love with Feathercurl. Nevertheless, he was a male and couldn't help noticing the various pleasing qualities of the females in his charge.
For what it was worth, Flamepaw looked very much like him although with striking blue eyes, but she was far too young for him to seriously consider making their relationship romantic. What could a mere apprentice have in common with a cat old enough to have seen the disbanding of one clan and begun the creation of his own?
Raccoonmask was so serious and business-like that he found the idea of being her mate to be more of a political move than a personal one, and so he continued to ignore that option despite knowing she would very likely accept his proposal out of professional courtesy and a sense of mutual obligation.
In reality, he felt his affection for Snowfoot to be growing, albeit slowly. She had acted calm and quiet since appearing at his borders, and her difficulty adapting to desert life made him feel protective of her. Maybe a relationship would bee just the thing to make her feel at home.
He decided to ask her after the day's work was done. With the clan growing so large, there was much to do.

aura. wrote:curlew followed the patrol, his shoulders caved in as he slunk along, careful not to trod over any tails. conch kept sending him bewildered gazes, though he wondered why she was so shocked: after all, it may have taken a moon, but he pledged to follow her wherever she went, so long as he had a chance to wish his foster son farewell. gash, as he was called, was not too fond of the idea of curlew leaving to join clan cats and follow his mistress who had formerly had kits of her own. but he made a promise, and after all, he was vivaciously in love with the doll. as conch shot another glance at him, he straightened, winked, and purred throatily.
"hush up back there, you're our prisoner." hemlockbud, one of conch's daughters, grunted stiffly. her clanmate, a white-cream colored cat with a silver face, rolled her eyes.
"but, oh wow, you should probably not talk to him that way." she purred, never breaking the steady roll of her vocals. the flowers crowned over her ears fell in front of her eyes. "wow." she said again.
"quil, hush now." a furless cat murmured, protectively brushing her side, casting uneasy glances at curlew. the second to last cat in the patrol, a brown-black-spotted tom like curlew, rolled his eyes at the exchanged between his clanmates. he dropped back, so he was standing next to curlew. he was smaller, less bulky and more wiry, but muscles still rolled under his sleek pelage.
"ignore them, they put all the inexperienced cats in one patrol. we're never sure what to do with new cats. chase them off, invite them in." then the cat glanced at curlew and sighed softly. "i'm dragon, i'm sure frecklestar will take you in. plus, it seems you know conch." with that, he returned to his position by a siamese cat's side, leading the patrol further across the scorched forest.

"no! that isn't how you do it, corykit! why do you have to be such a clutz? you could never be founder." ebonykit snapped at the tiny tortoiseshell kit, irritation rolling off him in waves.
"i'm not!" she sniffed, glaring at him with indignation the size of a full grown lion. "i'd be the best founder. don't you think so, maplestep?" corykit's mother looked up from her nap, her head swaying back and forth.
"of course, but that's not how the clan works. only kits related to the leader get to be founder. you can be the warlock, if you wish." the calico queen fell back asleep, exhaustion of motherhood creeping back in. the folded ear kit sighed, then looked back at ebonykit, who was looking at her with rage.
"see, you can't be founder! the closest kit related to frecklestar is... me! i'm splitpaw's favorite, so i will be the leader. ebonystar sounds nice. you-" he prodded at corykit, "-can be a stinky, old elder! and iriskit can be my mate, named... irisbloom because she's so pretty!" he purred, looking at iriskit.
"i want to be a warlock." she said stiffly, ignoring ebonykit entirely. "and flamekit can be my recruit, since he's knew to the clan."
"fine, but i get to tell you ALL what to do!" the black kit bellowed.
"wait, i don't want to be a stinky elder!" corykit protested, looking at iriskit for help.
"elders are important." she mewed, awkwardly shifting on her paws.
fine, i'll be an elder today. but tomorrow, i'll knock you off your throne, ebonykit.

splitpaw looked at her reflection in a pool, disgusted by her torn ear and scarred nose bridge. she let out a quiet wail, slumping down onto the ground next to the training hollow. she had snuck out to be alone, but could sense she wasn't; she glanced up, just to see acciapaw gazing at her. "why are you here, did frecklestar send you?" she snapped, quickly swiping underneath her eyelids to keep the tears from spilling over. "if she did, you can go ahead and leave. i can fight now, another fox won't get me."
"your mother didn't send me, and i-i didn't mean to intrude... but, i was worried about you." he admitted sheepishly. splitpaw's eyes softened slightly, but she wasn't going to let him see that. she straightened up and met his gaze with fierceness.
"well, i'm fine, and my safety is none of your concern." she sniffed, lifting her muzzle and puffing out her chest.
"it is, i'm your warlock." he reasoned, coaxing her gently. but splitpaw was furious by now.
"warlock apprentice, and i don't need you looking after me all the time! i'm not a frightened kit anymore." she bared her teeth, and whipped around to face the puddle again. she slapped the water with her forepaw aggressively, dropping onto her stomach once more. several moments of silence passed, before she felt a gentle brush along her back up to her shoulders. acciapaw's scent wreathed her with a homie comfort, soothing her.
"i still think you're beautiful." he whispered, crouching down so that he lay next to her. "and i will always think that." he placed his paw on hers, and she touched her nose to his cheek.
"you promise?"
"i promise, buntingpaw."

amethyst14 wrote:A long and quiet sigh escaped me as I looked around the now crowded medicine den. My mentor didn't even say anything to me as he slowly trotted towards the sick. Even I noticed that all the cats have the same symptoms that Resinmoon had, in the same order as well. First came the coughing, only to get worse. Next was a runny nose and infections, weather it be eyes, lunges, anything for now. I sat down as Archpool made the rounds of the sick cats he had ordered that the cats stay out of the other dens and completely avoid the nursery. He even ordered me to keep my distance from the sick, I would need to help the new queens and check the kits health.
"Owlpaw!" My mentor Archpool snapped at me, a good thing as I had much on my mind. This would be the first time I would help deliver kits on my own and there was much to think about and go over.
"Y-yes Archpool?" I said in the usual quiet voice, I was always so scared. That itself was an illness I could never conquer, I am a pathetic medicine cat.
"I told you I don't want you around here. Go prepare the herbs for the kittings and make a nest for yourself in the nursery. On your free time I want you to search for herbs. What ever you do, stay out of this den, it's full of sickness and we haven't figured out if it's contagious or anything for that matter." Archpool ordered me like usual. I wanted to argue, I wanted to ask him why. He is more experienced than I but, even he could not figure this out, only mutter some phrase that Starclan gave him.
As always I only nodded, it wasn't worth arguing. Not me anyways, I could never speak loud enough, or even over anyone. I was forever obedient, even when Sagestorm, no, he's Sagestar now. He was my mentor once, a cruel mentor who taught me cruelly. Sagestar did so many terrible things, why would Starclan give him the lives of leaders? Why are they bringing destruction upon Briarclan? I shook my head and grabbed some kitting herbs I thought I might need, at least there was new life coming to the clan. That means that there is hope for Briarclan after all.
After I checked on the soon to be queens before heading out to look for some herbs. I ran through some herbs that might be useful for the sickness and checked a few patches that the herbs grew in. With no luck I decided to head across the dangerous river and into the unknown. I paused after a while and noticed that it was already to dark to head back to camp so I found a nice burrow to sleep in and when morning came again I continued my search. My paws dragged me through other clan's borders but I didn't care because I was going to find the cure.
It was a patch with a promising smell that intrigued me and made me unaware of my surrounds, another cat had spotted me and claimed that I was on his territory. I never got the cat's name and he was so helpful, but I do know that he is from Echoclan and he must be a medicine cat because he knows about herbs. He was even nice enough to offer help again! Even gave me some Chickweed to try, though I don't know much about this particular herb. Maybe this tom would be willing to come to Briarclan camp and help out? It would definitely help us with the extra mind involved. I shook my head, that was a kit-brained idea! Not only would Archpool refuse but so would Sagestar, he would even harm the tom for helping. Gasp! What if he harms me for accepting herbs from another clan?! I can't take this to camp, it smells of other clan's territory. I struggled with the thought and stopped moving, I didn't know what to do but I do know I want to help!
"Maybe I can say I stole it from another clan's territory?" I whispered to myself, the chickweed laid next to me seemed to have laughed at the very idea.
"Steal what?" Archpool's familiar voice meowed. I jumped at the sound and knew I was caught now, nothing to do but beg for forgiveness. Before I could Archpool looked at the herb, "Chickweed? It has been moons since I saw this. Where did you get it?" My mentor still remained calm, it helped me answer him.
"Eh- Echoclan-n, please don't b-be mad!" His tail flickered before he sat down, his eyes piercing and judging. I looked down, knowing he wanted further details. "I - uh - there was thi- I.." I couldn't decided if I wanted to lie or not.
Archpool sighed, "You better spit it out Owlpaw if I am going to cover you butt. I want to know the truth though, why were you gone for three whole days? You know that there are queens that are almost due! And I have my paws full with this sickness. It has worsened you know? A kit had caught it and that puts so many in danger."
My eyes widened with shock, "I thought y-you kept all the sick cats in y-your den? I wanted to find something to help. I ended up on Echoclan's territory and a nice tom cat helped me. He even said he would continue to help me, b-but I don't want him to get hurt. H-he was so k-kind.." I trailed off.
Archpool narrowed his eyes, "If I suspect you to be expecting kits, you should know I will be the one to end your life. It is forbidden to have a mate or kits as a medicine cat!"
Shock! I shook my head and stuttered over my own words, nothing intelligible seemed to come out so I just shut my mouth. Of course I wouldn't think of that, there was no way I could attract a male like that.
Archpool huffed, "I will say that I stole this, there was no way you would even think about stealing and Sagestar knows that. I forbid you to see this tom again Owlpaw. Lets go, you have queens to help and a ceremony to go through. Your training is done and if you are brave enough to go out and search for herbs on your own then it seems like you can learn the rest on your own. There is nothing more I can teach you, Owlseed. I know you are not one for ceremonies, but this should be done in front of the clan to make it official."
I shook out of excitement and nervousness, I was scared too. Was I ready? What was going to happen now?

his ears perked when he heard rustling behind him, and he turned around slowly.
"hey pretty fella, what's a nice tom like you doin' in a place like this?"
ghost stiffened as the molly sat down, her fluffy tail waving in the air. he knew not to relax, he could see the cool intelligence gleaming from her eyes.
he hummed and dipped his head. "i'm a leader of a clan. mintclan." he replied, and a hint of shock colored her gaze. he wasn't foolish enough to deny the fact that she let him see it.
"a clan, here?" she asked, the blank expression back on her face. he nodded again, giving her a soft smile. "ah- yes. a home for cats who wish to stop traveling."
the molly tipped her head to the side and watched him, her expression gaining intrigue. "and...what does a cat have to do, to join your clan?" the words were purred out, a suggestion layered in her tone.
ghost stiffened and gave her a sharp look, his eyes cool. "just ask." the molly gave him another look, and abruptly sheathed her claws.
"you'd allow a total stranger to go to the place where you sleep, just because they asked nicely." she said, amusement and danger lurking in her words. ghost thought about it for a moment, then nodded once. "well, yes." he admitted, and the molly huffed.
"can't lead a clan if you're dead." she pointed out, and ghost gave her a small smile.
"somehow, i get the impression that if you wanted me dead, i would be dead." the molly gave him a smirk, her eyes shining.

lame loser. wrote:Rosepaw smiled at Splatterpaw's passionate love for his foster siblings. "They've really been preparing for this, Rosepaw! I've seen it recently, Tigerkit keep asking for some lessons from me and Silverpaw has been putting himself out there- He's been talking a little more and he even talked to Bearpaw and Vanillapaw!" He rambled. "It's just so great, I can't wait for them to be allowed to sleep over with me, we can be a cuddled up family again!" Splatterpaw added, his muzzle stretching with his large grin.
"You're not going to stay an apprentice long, you and Vanillapaw are doing your last training session." Rosepaw added, thinking of the up-coming warrior ceremony. "Who do you suppose we'll get paired up with for the Long Hunt?" She questioned.
"Probably you and Vanillapaw then me and Bearpaw." Splatterpaw thought. "Ya know, toms with toms and she-cats with she-cats. Seems like fewer issues." He shrugged, not really minding that.
'I'd rather go with Splatterpaw than Vanillapaw...' Rosepaw thought, sighing. However, she was feeling like she was getting close to Vanillapaw again.
Splatterpaw opened his mouth to reassure Rosepaw, but Blazestar called through the clan.
"Every cat old enough to fish, gather to hear my word!" Blazestar called, the cats coming together to make a semi-circle around him in the clearing. Rosepaw took her seat, hoping Splatterpaw would stay with her. However, he pushed his way to the front. 'It's his family, after all.' She shrugged, yet Vanillapaw took a seat next to her, Bearpaw following. 'More like Foxpaw with his betrayal to me...' She scorned.
"Tigerkit and Silverkit. You've become 6 moons, so we must present you to Starclan for your apprentice ceremony!" He called, getting yowls of happiness from Waveclan.
"Tigerkit, from now on until you have gone for your Long Hunt, you will be known as Tigerpaw. Your mentor will be Smallstorm, I hope he can teach you patience and discipline." He decided, Tigerpaw going over to touch noses with his new mentor. Rosepaw couldn't help noticing that, even though he's a new apprentice, Tigerpaw stood shoulder to shoulder with the small tom.
"Silverkit, you will be known as Silverpaw. For a mentor, you'll have Panthersnap, a confident and intelligent she-cat. Learn all you can from her." Silverpaw, just as his sister did, touched noses with Panthersnap.
'Splatterpaw's right, he is nervous. I can see him shaking from here!' Rosepaw thought, almost laughing at how cute that is. However, her mood was ruined as she glanced over to see Vanillapaw leaning on Bearpaw and whispering to him. "Be quiet!" She hissed to the two, rolling her eyes.
"Clan dismissed!" Blazestar called.
"Tigerpaw! Silverpaw! Tigerpaw! Silverpaw!" The clan shouted, Rosepaw couldn't help to join. However, she noticed Vanillapaw refused to chant the new apprentice's names. 'At least Bearpaw will do that.' The apprentice took a deep breath, going over to Tigerpaw and Silverpaw. "Have fun training with Splatterpaw, he'll make sure nothing goes wrong!" She said to them, smiling at the slightly smaller cats. 'I already feel like a warrior! Roseclaw, the strongest warrior in history!' She thought, grinning.
"C'mon, we're going training now!" Vanillapaw said to the two apprentices, Patchfur over her shoulder. Rosepaw watched the group leave, going over to her own patrol for now.
