Gull hissed in a short spark of frustration and hopped angrily down onto the sand once more. Her paws stung slightly from the blazing stones and she walked down toward the shore so she could stand in the cool, wet sand to soothe them. She watched the white bubbles on the waves as they rushed up to pause a few inches from her before receding back to where they came from. The sun was beginning to sink and she worried that she would return empty-pawed. Soon, a rock jutting out into the water several fox-lengths down shore from her gave her an idea. She trotted down and jumped up onto it, careful not to slip as water splashed up around her. She crept out and peered over the edge. Her eyes lit up as she saw flickering dark shapes below the surface. They were fish. She watched, very still, and then shot out a sandy white paw. It splashed into the water with a promising crack, but came up empty. Flicking it with disappointment, she sat back and waited for the startled fish to return. A flash of movement caught in her peripheral vision and she snapped her head around. A pale gray and white cat with darker stripes along its back was meandering up the shoreline. Gull was suddenly very nervous. She had always felt that she would be ready to defend her territory with tooth and claw, but now that the opportunity was arising, she felt she was not prepared for confrontation. Instead, she sat stock still, puffing up her small chest at the bigger cat, until it came near enough that they could speak. The cat was a female, her left ear sporting a tough looking scar.
"Who are you?" Gull asked, her voice coming out steady and strong.
The cat didn't even bat an eye.
"Looks like you're having a bit of trouble there," she said, dismissing Gull's question.
Gull flicked an ear and squinted at her. What game was she trying to play?
"I have a good amount of experience catching fish," the cat continued. "I could help you if you want."
Gull hesitated a moment. "First tell me who you are."
"My name's Silver. I used to live with humans when I was young, but they dumped me by the shore and I made my own life."
Gull was fairly satisfied with her answer, but needed to let her know where she was. "You do know this territory belongs to the Tribe of Breaking Waves, right?" She felt a surge of pride speaking the words.
This seemed to get Silver's attention. "A tribe huh? How many of you are there?"
Gull paled slightly. "A whole lot of us," she lied, not knowing if this cat would try anything if she knew there were only two members so far.
Silver seemed unconvinced. She nodded her head though. "Well, I can help you catch something for your tribe. I just ate anyway."
She hopped up onto the rock beside Gull and peered into the water. Gull glanced at Silver's rippling muscles and was a bit amazed at her size. Gull had always been a small cat, but this she-cat was still somewhat larger than the average female.
"You see that big one?" she asked, lifting her paw in its direction.
Gull nodded, watching its dark shadow shift beneath the rippling water. Silver showed her how to hook her paw with claws all the way extended, and then counted down from five. They both struck out at the same time. Gull snatched the fishes face and Silver its tail, and they hauled it ashore where Gull slashed at its neck until it stopped wriggling. She was ecstatic with their teamwork.
"That was great!" she smiled. "You would be a great asset to the tribe."
Silver thought for a moment, as if she were weighing her options. "I suppose I could come see what its all about.. Your tribe-mates won't mind that?"
Gull shook her head, hoping Silver would understand why she had lied. Silver agreed to come back with her and they hauled the fish back up the shore together and into the copse of trees. Soon they reached the camp. Inside the thick brambly walls, Gull saw Tideteller standing with a black and white tom. They both looked up as the two she-cats entered.
"Hello Gull," Tideteller meowed. "Wow what a feast you've brought! And who is your friend?"
Gull dropped the fish onto the stony area by the pool, that was the designated area for fresh-kill.
"This is Silver. She is wondering if she could join us."
Tideteller smiled. "Of course. Gull, Silver, this is Stone. He will be joining us as well as a guard."
Stone smiled politely at the two she-cats. He seemed to be about Tideteller's age and had a few scars on his nose, but Gull felt immediately comforted knowing he would be here to help protect them. Tideteller decided on official names for the two newcomers; Silver Feather on the Sand, and Stone of Jagged Cliff. Silver would be a prey hunter, as her fishing skills were a great addition to the tribe. Gull saw her shoot her a look as she realized she had been lied to about the tribe's size, but she seemed more amused than annoyed.
Tideteller smiled to them all. "Our family is growing. I will be sure to contact the ancestor's again soon so that we may continue to build our home."
Gull led Silver to the prey-hunter's den, a bramble cave in the camp wall that had been padded over with peat moss to create a thick lining. They settled down for the night, and Gull's hopes soared, thinking about her growing tribe and pride in it.
