Hello, I'm Jabberwocky, and I'm a Christian who thinks evolution is a bunch of unproved balogna. (NO OFFENSE! XD sorry I had to start out with that sentence...) I'm going into high school *feels inferior* and have a love for science and learning more about the world God created for us. I love hearing why other people believe what they do and have a desire to share my opinions with others, and hope to learn more by reading and posting on this thread :] I will admit I have no scientific skills to speak of besides being able to write, but hey, maybe my purpose here is to make the rest of you guys feel smart. :D
and I don't think I could ever pick a favorite scientist or discovery; this intricate, beautiful, mysterious world of ours never ceases to amaze me.

P.S. Tom Servo, I love your username! <3 I thought I was the only Mystery Science Theater 3000 geekazoid on here! :D

Hey Jabberwocky! I am Catholic, and I have made up my own theory on how the world came to be (a cross between God & the Big Bang Theory/Evolution). I think I a much like you in many ways. :]

Almost. I like to think that God put all the "ingredients" for the world in a box and then accidentally-on-purpose knocked it over, spilling it's contents. Many things exploded and created the world. Humans came about by God being bored, and decided to sculpt some self portraits. Animals and plants all started from little balls of mud, which God then used his all mighty-ness to make living. They soon evolved into what we know today.

So that's my theory. I understand if you don't get it, most people don't understand me. :]

RE: Women in science. I've actually noticed that in physics there's disproportionally more men. I'd heard of this bias but I've been fortunate enough not to experience it, yet. In my department both the solid state group and the department itself are run by women. But I know there aren't that many female physicists. Many girls are put off even before taking options because they see it as a boys subject without much relevance to their lives, and attempts I've seen to make it more interesting are a little patronising? Talking about "hair straighteners" and all that. Maybe that's not patronising at all and I'm just odd xD. Like I said I was fortunate enough not to experience bias at my PhD interviews - there were more men there for Astro but I wasn't the only one by a long shot - and I got three offers and two statements of interest (oddly enough I got no response from my own Uni, thanks guys) so at least the people I've encountered haven't discriminated against me (maybe it was positive discrimination). But that could all change as I move up (hopefully move up anyway). There's definitely some trepidation on my behalf. Are there any guys here who have some experience?

Hi Jabberwocky! Welcome to the thread :D glad you're interested in learning!

I'd like to clarify something for everyone before the discussion continues and I hope there's understanding on everyone's behalf. In the code of conduct for the thread I've specifically included a rule about "Fact vs Opinion" that if you haven't read, I really would like you to now before reading on. Read? Cool :). This thread is for anyone interested in science and learning more regardless of their background, regardless of their political, religious or musical opinions. However, if you do bring any of these opinions into the thread they may end up being discussed and treated like a scientific hypothesis. That is, if they fly in the face of objective evidence and current scientific understanding then there is a possibility that the person holding the opinion will be corrected on their understanding of known real-world observations and their opinion considered invalid. Please do not take this as a personal attack. This isn't bigotedness against opinion, it's just that science is not an opinion (like political theory can be) nor a framework of supernatural belief (like religion) but is a collection of true observations explained by accepted scientific theories that can explain past events and correctly predict future events within its scope. Therefore scientific endeavour and discovery supersedes unfounded opinion. If, as an individual you cannot accept that science transcends opinion in a lot of cases, then the debate/discussion aspect of thread may not be for you and could cause some distress. By all means present opinion, as science does not know everything in every field, but be prepared to defend it as a scientific hypothesis.

I hope I won't have to 'be OP' much in the thread as it would be nice to have the thread self-regulated by its members, like science is, but I realise that there's no precedence yet on how unfounded opinion should be treated as it's often an extremely delicate matter. I hope the above paragraph gives confidence to thread members in how to approach this in that thread members can be critical regardless of the nature of the opinion, which is a little different to how other threads on the forum may approach it (note: critical, not blatant mocking and ad hominem attacks, of course).

If someone wants to discuss for example religious belief and discuss it without worrying about contradicting science, there's a thread here for that where things are treated a little more delicately :).

Also in my infinite wisdom of knowing how these things turn out, before anything starts I'll add that the process of evolution, as explained by evolutionary theory, is a fact of this world and evolutionary theory has been used throughout biology to create many things including modern medicine. Evolution as a physical process is real. If for some reason you don't agree, there's a thread here where a large portion of CSSC thread members are discussing evolution and creationism and this would be the best place for that discussion to take place :).

In that note would anyone like me to explain current cosmological understanding on how the Universe began and changed over time? It'll be mostly a repost from a really long post I made a few weeks ago though, for people who have already see it? My own personal opinion is that no God was needed to instigate any part of the Universe, but God is outside the realms of physical understanding and therefore I can't directly prove my stance, only demonstrate that we as beings didn't need a helping hand to get where we are and that it could happen naturally.

@Seraphwolf: Since I don't feel like quoting you post, I will reply here. Yes, I know. I read the Fact Vs. Opinion, and I do realize that anyone believing in a God, or God-Like-Beings will more than likely be replied to with an air of hostility. Now that being said, I am not trying to shove my religion down anyone's throat.

Anyways...
I might go post my theory on the religion-related thread. :]

A summary on how the Universe began and changed over time, would be nice. Since I am in middle school, you may have to "dumb it down" for me if you use terminology that I may not know.

Hey now, if anyone blindly attacks theists for being theists in here I'll be the first to object. The point is about denial of scientific fact when there is no scientifically viable (supported by reams of peer-reviewed papers) alternative. Any alternative to the majority accepted view presented here will be subject to the level of scrutiny that all scientific hypotheses are subject to (namely, a hell of a lot).
