There were soft murmurs around me when I stirred awake.
Three kits-one of them significantly younger- were murmuring to each other in front on the bush I was sleeping under. Unwrapping myself from my wings, I stretched, shaking off the lose feathers. The three instantly jumped up as they noticed I was no longer asleep. One of them walked up to me keeping his brothers behind him.
His voice was deep, and there was certainly a low rumbling mixed in, from a hint of a snarl.
“Who are you? And more importantly, why are you
here?”
He eyed me, warily.
“I am Meraki. Mel for short. And I’m just looking for a way home.”
He continued eyeing me, a frown forming as he was probably measuring things through his head.
“Whoah! What are you? Are you a Kalon just like us? What’s up with your front legs? Er..um..I mean..um.. They just aren’t legs…?"
The youngest one blurted out, sticking his head out from behind his brother, earning a poke and an eye-roll from the other.
“Carson! Shhhhh!”
“Uh.. I
am a Kalon, Just like you guys. And honestly, I am not sure…”
I gave my wings a small shake, conscious of the kits watching me.
“But my Mom has similar wings like mine! So I guess that’s where I got the wings”
It was difficult stopping myself from bursting into laughter as Carson’s eyes grew in awe and curiosity.
“Whoah! That is SO COOL!” Carson exclaimed, jumping up and down excitedly
“Come on Orion! She seems friendly enough! I don’t think she’d be any kind of threat!”
The other kit walked up next to Orion and eyeing me once, spoke to him.
“Yeah, I’m going to have to go with Carson this time. She’s no threat to us.
There’s a lot for us to get through today, and we’ve spent enough time..uh..
assessing.”
The eldest sighed and turned away from me.
“Fine, I guess I might have overreacted. But it is true we can never be too careful.
Come on guys.”
And with that he led the other two away, on to their own paths.
“W-wait!”
I heard myself stutter
“I-I introduced myself, who are
you?”
He gave another sigh, as if I am being a bother.
“Well, I am
Orion. The oldest among us. This, is
Fallic”
He said pointing his tail towards a red kit with horns
“and this is
Carson. The youngest among us. We live in these woods, and know it by heart. We depend on each other for survival each day, and we lost our parents at a young age. And now if you’ll excuse us, we have work to do.”
My mother’s Temple had a forest near it! If these kits know these woods and if the forest is part of these woods…“Wait! D-do you think you can help me find my way back home..?”
