For someone who hates being the center of attention, she makes an excellent leader—even if sometimes she goes a little overboard. She's never afraid to tell someone her mind or what she makes of them. She has more spunk than most people give her credit for, and she loves making mischief. Some see her as quite childish and don't think her worthy of holding such an important position. Despite her supposed immaturity, she's a skilled fighter, and her "rebellious" nature has kept her and the other Safe Zone inhabitants safe. Keeping the people inside the Safe Zone alive and well is her number one task, and nothing is going to sway her from it.history. Vala was born into a poor family on the northern edges of Tennessee. She always knew she would end up in the military; she'd known since she was old enough to learn that her mother had died serving in the Army. Her entire teenage years were driven towards attaining her goal—including ignoring the people who told her that she'd never get far in the ranks with her attitude. After she graduated high school, she enrolled in the Army; she had risen to the rank of lieutenant by the time the apocalypse had broken out. She was stationed in the Safe Zone as the deputy, but when the former leader died, she was given their position. With the rise in rank, she was promoted to a captain—to make the people of the Safe Zone better respect her, she was told. She commanded the zone with a strict hand; it went against ever fiber of her being to be so ruthless, but she knew it was the only way to keep the people alive.
