Heronstar was born into a clan with non-traditional naming as Heronkit, alongside her sister. She became Heronstone for her (normally) carefully controlled emotions and calm decision making. Or because it seemed poetic and a reflection of the nature of a heron depending on the exact level of non-traditional-ness - which I actually prefer as the reasoning because Heronstone would hate that more, but she'd definitely try the first explanation out on anyone who asked.
The fact that it's "carefully controlled emotions" as opposed to "weak emotions"/etc, is because Heronstone really dislikes non-traditional names, and she had simmering loathing for them. I haven't planned it out fully (can you tell that my knowledge of my cats' backgrounds is somewhat limited?) but I'm thinking she made friends with a cat from another clan who explained differences between naming systems, traditional made a lot more sense to her, and the loathing slowly built up.
Her old clan got destroyed (I'm not 100% decided how, but I'm leaning towards something in human redevelopment, particularly as that would suit the placement in the Lake District), and her family died during the destruction. Or rather, her parents died during, and Heron- managed to get her sister and her young nieces and nephew out before they died too shortly after.

you definitely don't have to use them, but since kittens start off with blue eyes i figured it wasn't too much of a stretch for ashkit and elmkit's eyes to have changed colors as they aged !!
