How Snowball Got her Groove Back
Snowball sighed softly, her nose tucked into her pure white paws. It grew lonely living in the shelter for as long as she did, but there was no use in feeling too upset. She wasn’t an exactly remarkable dog, her fur being a plain white and all. Her most defining physical feature was her piercing red eyes. Some found them pretty, some found them a bit off putting. Either way, no one ever adopted her over the other dogs, who possessed far more magnificent pelts. It seemed these days being cheerful and loving wasn’t enough to be chosen by a family. All Holly wanted was anyone to care about or to have a sense of togetherness with.
It was mid-December and Christmas was just around the corner. The staff of the animal shelter set up the place with many cute holiday decorations. The lonely dog loved to watch as the halls were decked with boughs of holly. Later in the evening when everything seemed to quiet down, one of the decorations slipped off of the wall and onto the ground: a small bunch of holly. Intrigued, Snowball pawed at it and pulled it in, as it was quite close to her vicinity. She plucked a berry with her teeth and swallowed it. It tasted odd- somewhat bitter. A bad taste now in her mouth, Snowball rested once more.
In the morning, some of the staff began to suspect Snowball was the one who ate the berries off of the holly. They feared she would get sick. As she was transported to the healthcare specialist, she began to feel some nausea creeping in. What even was that...? The dog patiently waited for the vet to return, until her back started to feel a bit uncomfortable. With a low yelp, Snowball fainted. Seemingly moments later, the puzzled dog found that two wings made of holly stretched out of her back. Surprisingly, she wasn’t alarmed- only anxious what the staff would say. It’s like Spider-Man, except with holly instead of a spider! Chuckling internally, Snowball tested her wings and hovered a couple feet up, then scratched on the door. After her tests confirming she was in good health and the wings were safe, the holly dog was returned to her place at the shelter.
Suddenly, everyone seemed to be interested in adopting her. She frowned, knowing they only cared about how she looked. They don’t really want me for me... This helped her realize she didn’t need these families to be happy. As long as she was happy with herself and her new wings, Snowball didn’t need a family to care for her. Leaping out the window that would have normally been too high for her, Snowball flew away into the snow-coated outdoors, ready to live her life her own way.
The end! Thank you so much for the opportunity, I had a lot of fun writing this story!
