❝ my joy was her happiness,
        my sadness her unbearable pain,
she gave me the light of a thousand
        stars
she loved me, and that would
        never change,

        she was my mother.❞
light. she could not see it yet, though she could feel it.

it bathed the meek kit in it's radiance, wrapping it's warmth around the child like a tight blanket as she inhaled her first breath, shielding them from the terror that laid beyond them in the ruthless world.

a smell wafted through their small, dark nose. it wasn't a particular flavour that she necessarily found in her first intake of breath, but rather it was emotion. A gentle tenderness, soft and reassuring. It immediately pulled the newborn closer, nose twitching as she followed blindly to reach the root of the comforting scent.

what the little kit had found, as she pressed her head against the silky body of another, was that the scent had brought her to the light. Unintentionally, a quiet mew escaped through the parted mouth of the kit as she pushed her head further into the soft fur of something.

A gentle purr returned the call.

The little kit meekly lifted their head, small ears flicking forwards, in the direction of the noise. Just like the light and the scent, the sound held a sensitive tone to it. Another similarity was that it also was near to her.

Seconds elapsed, soon dragging into minutes before the young cat began to open her eyes to the world.

Her eyelids fluttered upwards, almost silent like the beating of the owl's wings. They no longer masked the dazzling pair of eyes that the she-kit possessed; the kind that you could get lost in. Her eyes were a complimenting shade of blue, woven from the fabric of the ocean and sky, each strand of blue intertwined with another to form one priceless tapestry captured inside the round sockets of the small kit's eyes.

The eyes swelled with emotion, like a personal hurricane that was captured with the orbs of a living creature as the kit stared upwards. To the first thing that they would ever see in the entirety of their lives.

And she would never forget it.

It was the light. It was the warm light, the soothing scent, the comforting purr. The second the kit saw it she knew it, it wasn't something she just took on a whim, it was definite. There was no way to possibly provide proof following this claim, but every nerve inside her screamed that this was the light. It was like heaven had taken form in a rather small, female cat, who stared down at the kit with a small smile.

But god, she looked like pure hell.

Three long, jagged lines ran down the older cat's face, beginning at the base of her right ear and dragging down to her left cheek. Crimson red blood oozed from the wound, coating the fur that once appeared pearly-white in a deep red. One eye was slammed shut, swollen and inflamed with one of the deep slashes running directly through the eyelid. The scratches were quite distinctively of another creature; more specifically, a cat.

"My figlia cara, it is alright. You are safe, and that is all that matters." The soothing voice purred to her kit, who's doll-faced featured had been twisted with pain—something the cat speaking should have been doing— as she stared at the cat; the cat she then understood the be her madre.

Though incredibly young, the tiny kit was no fool to see that the injuries given to the cat were causing an alarming pain to exude from her. It caused a rumple in the warm fabric of light that she imagined wrapped around her, almost as though the fibres were ripping apart. It scared the young one, so she tucked her head closer to the bleeding cat's belly.

She listened quietly to the thrumming of her madre's heartbeat, feeling each rising and fall of her breathing, too young to know that it was slowly ebbing away into a stillness. Yet, it was rhythmic, hypnotic even. The kit wanted nothing more than the be at the side of her mother, to be embraced by the light and to forever be tucked away from the mercilessness known to be humanity.

A harsh cough halted the calming breathing, turning the small breathes into heavy, sporadic ones. "My child.." She said hoarsely, head dropping with a sudden exhaustion as her heartbeat fluttered for a moment. Her one eye that remained unshut looked at her small kit, her green eyes teaming with emotion, tears swimming in the stunning set of orbs. Her breathing slowed.

Confused and alarmed, the kit surged closer towards her bloodied face, blue eyes widened. "M-Mother!" She cried, small muzzle bumping the side of her madre's face gently.

Her mother's lips tugged back into a frail smile, letting a weak chuckle escape her maw. "It's okay, Aniella.."
She whispered as her head sank further to the ground, eyelids fluttering shut.

"No, No! Please Madre, don't leave.." The little kit pleaded, pressing her head against her mother's head and breathing in her sweet scent, trying to keep the warmth with her mother. Trying, desperately, for the light inside to say lit. In the pale glow of the moonlight, translucent tears streamed down her cheeks.

"I will always be with you, Aniella..." The queen whispered to her kit, muzzle gently brushing against her kit's head as her breathing continued to slow, the rythmic heartbeat beginning to ebb away in a heartbreaking silence, signalling her final act; her demise, her ending.

The warm light that the kit already so fondly loved was fading, and she pressed her head against her mother's. "Madre.." She only managed to choke out the single word before shoving her face in the cold fur of her parent.

      Her light was gone.

[ act ii. ] — "siblings".

        ❝ isn't it sad
        that some people
        aren't waiting for
        their happily ever
        after,

        they're just waiting
        for
        the end. ❞
she wouldn't forget that day. she couldn't even if she tried.

the images of her mother's limp figure being pried away from her small, hopeless grasp as the large hands of what she was informed were 'humans' flashed through her head, slamming them into her vision even when she squeezed her eyes shut. A whimper escaped her small maw, though it came quickly to a halt as the heavy body of another slammed into her side.

"Ani-ellla!" A loud, squeaky voice called. "Come play with us, stupid pipsqueak sister!"

Aniella opened her blue eyes and stared at the large tabby kit who was pressed against her side, muzzle shoved into her shoulder as the kit attempted to move Aniella. Aniella tried to swallow the hurt that formed in her tongue as her so-called 'sibling' teased her with a snide remark.

When the human's had taken her away from her mother, they seemed to have tried to put her with another mother. Her name was Peony, but the molly had continuously tried to make Aniella call her mother. Of course, the small little kit's madre would always be her light, the beautiful fluffy-white pelted molly that would forever be remembered as her madre.

And, what Aniella was originally excited about had turned into what she despised; her siblings.

The four plump brown tabbies with the names poppy, oliver, sammy and prince. They were almost identical in appearances, only small differences like flecks of gold on their muzzles or a splash of white on their fur that separated one from another. But, their personalities differed; yet all carried the same loathing for Aniella.

It was a constant battle with them, Aniella always ending up with one or more of the dreaded kits screaming rude comments in her ear as they pinned her to ground. She'd always be the last to nurse, and now, as they begun to switch to small pellets of dry food, last to eat.

Her ears flattened to her head as the thought trickled through her mind, and she looked up at Poppy. "N-No thank you." She replied, trying to be polite.

"I'm not taking no for an answer, nor is Oli or Sam or Prince." She snapped back, getting annoyed. "Get up, we're all waiting for you to race with us so we can beat your dumb slow-poke butt."

Aniella bit back a small whimper, squeezing her eyes shut for a moment before lifting herself to her legs.. her short, tiny legs. She had the shortest legs out of her group by-far, the rest of them have tall sets of legs that could send them off running with ease. The little munchkin had far more difficulty, so she was naturally teased for it.

After a few quick pushes from the larger kitten, Aniella made her way over to the three others kits. She could already see Sammy trying to pin Prince to the ground, though it ended up that both of them tumbling and tussled around.

"Guys! C'mon, we can race now with slowpoke here." Poppy mewed, catching all of their attention.

The trio bounded forwards, then lining up next to eachother on an imaginary line. Aniella could hear a lot of, 'i'm gonna win' and 'no, I'm the fastest' floating around in conversation before Oli cried out.

"Okay! Let's go in three, two.. see you in the dust suckers!" Oli screamed behind their shoulder excitedly as they burst forwards, everyone charging forwards. Aniella desperately tried to catch up, her feet skidding across the floor as she began to move her way up the ranks. Her surprise mounted as she became neck-to-neck with the slowest of the group, Poppy. She stared back in disbelief and then growled, darting ahead of her and kicking her smack in the neck as she did so.

Black spots dotted Aniella's vision as pain coursed down her body, a groan escaping her lips, which curved downwards as she tried to surpress her pain. The ringing in her ears didn't mute the laughter from ahead of her, though it soon was swallowed up in silence..

Though Aniella had regained her sight in her grand blue eyes, she was still in awe of what was around her. it certainly wasn't the animal-place that she was recently housed in, as this house held a sense of grandeur that the other never held. it was always just plain whitish-gray that surrounded her and her so-claimed siblings, along with one long strip of glass that people would constantly look into.

What surrounding her held a much more lavish theme, however. The floor beneath her short legs was a smooth marble that was laminated, also slippery underneath her paws. As she took a few hesitant steps forwards, her claws clicked against the floor quite loudly, earning her attention to be focused upon that and not keeping her balance— which ended in a quick spout of awkward flailing before she slipped and fell down, rump sticking into the sky while her muzzle touched the flooring.

Somewhere across the spacious room a deep chuckle arose, along with a deep meow as the owner of the voice stifled back more laughter. "Having trouble keeping yourself on four paws?" A masculine voice asked humorously.

Surprised, Aniella threw her head up and stared at the person who owned the voice. Her jaw practically dropped as her blue eyes caught sight of the cat across the room. They were beautiful; putting even the most divine cats she had ever seen to shame. The tom had long, nimble legs and a sleek, muscly body that held a gorgeous spotted pelt. They looked like a small leopard.

"I'd close your mouth, it's dropped so low you could catch flies!" He shouted, laughing at his own joke while Aniella merely scrambled about, trying to not be so flustered. "I'm Marvolo, Miss Tia's Ashera cat."

Even the most oblivious of cats could hear the pride that resonated off of his voice. Aniella barely even said anything in response. "I-I'm Aniel-Aniella." Her voice shook with each word.

The tall leopard-like cat stared at her with curiousity. "Aniella, hm? Well, what breed are you? Miss Tia hasn't had a cat like you before.. well, their was that Minskin but.." The ashera trailed off, staring at her.

The tiny munchkin only tilted her head in confusion. Breeds, Miss Tia, Minskin? The she-cat was rather confused about what Marvolo was saying. "What?" She asked quietly.

Aniella sat quietly as the thick comb ran through her fur, cold, wrinkled hands of her owner holding her as she had her fur brushed out. It was something that happened often, the brushing and sudden attention from her owner whenever the munchkin was about to be brought to one of those cat-conventions. She would always taste the pride ringing off of Miss Tia whenever they were there, as people shoved about and tried to hold and pet Aniella. Flashes of lights would blare in her face as the humans held small squarish items in their hands that were called cameras.

It had become a regularity to the munchkin, even though she had spent only a few moons with the lady known to be Miss Tia. Being packed into small cages along with other unique-looking cats and then coming out into places with many other beautiful cats. It was slightly intimidating and at first, Aniella was nervous about talking to them, but she later learnt that they were too full of themselves to ever make fun of others.

Stretching her forepaws from the comfy bedding she rested on, the small cat slowly rose to her paws and began to make her way to the small flap that led her to a beautiful garden. She always preferred the outside rather than the huge house that she and many other cats lived in. It always made her feel a peace, rather than the stressful times inside.

Her blue eyes swept the perimeters of the large garden, staring out onto the menacingly high whitewashed fence as a single bird chirped their own song. Even with the trickling noise of the fountains found in the garden, her small ears pricked and kept attention onto the single bird as her paws moved her onwards. With each step underneath the lush grass, her eyes began to glimmer with more excitement.

She wished to be that bird, to climb the fence and see what lay beyond.

Aniella sighed. "What is behind this wall, what wonders could be behind this?" She asked aloud, voice tinged with a slight sadness.

She shook her head, knowing it was wrong to feel that way. She couldn't leave behind her master or the other cats, they loved her!

A meow struck her ears suddenly, one that didn't sound familiar in the slightest. Her head swung around to where she had heard it, eyes round with surprise as she stared at the cat that had made the noise.

With his paw lifted, the black cat with a white spot on their chest groomed themselves near the back of the fence, taking little care or notice to Aniella.

"W-Who are you?" Aniella asked timidly, shuffling towards them through the lush grass.

The cat looked up, eyebrows lifting in surprise. "Oh, hello." The cat mewed with a friendly, genuine smile. "Is this your owner's home?" They asked.

Aniella was a bit taken back by their friendliness. It wasn't often that a cat actually seemed to want to speak with her, most of them got fed up by her stuttering and flustered behaviour. "Miss Tia? U-Um, yeah.."

"That crazy cat-hoarder lives here? Oh jheese, I better get going." The cat lowered their paw, orange eyes staring at Aniella.

"Crazy cat hoarder? What do you mean?" She asked, anxiety prickling across her pelt. Miss Tia wasn't a cat hoarder, she couldn't be. She loved her and all the others, she was just a owner of multiple cats!

The black feline nodded his head. "Oh, she's been known to take in only to most expensive types of cats, she only has them for attention." They explained.

Aniella shook her head quickly. "No! It's not true, she loves me! She loves use all!" Aniella cried.

The cat's expression softened. "When does she 'love' you? Is it only at those cat shows that she gives you any affection?" They asked gently.

The munchkin didn't reply, only feeling a heavy wave of sadness pass through her as she realized what the he-cat said was true. Why.. I thought this was were I belonged, I thought Miss Tia loved me.. I thought she appreciated me! Her thoughts screamed in her mind as her spirits lowered.

The tom waddled over to her, touching his tail-tip to the munchkins shoulder in a consoling nature. "It's best you learn about it now than be fooled for years on end, like the rest of them did."

"Did? They knew, and didn't tell me?" Aniella's sadness was shifted into sharp feelings of betrayal. Why hadn't they told her, did they have an decency? Did they even care about her?

She knew that answer to that.

"Atleast you have a lovely garden like this, my family's isn't even half this big!" The he-cat mewed, slowly trotting away to the fence. "See you later, kid. I hope all goes well for y—"

"Take me with you! I don't want to stay here, please!" Aniella bounded after them as fast as she could. She hadn't ever known that their was a way out, and after what she had just been told, she didn't want to stay any longer.

The place meant nothing to her anymore. It was just a big home with small-minded cats.

The black cat turned his head, smiling softly. "Well, I mean, you can certainly fit under the fence, you're short legs have a real advantage!" He said as he lowered his body and slipped through a few ferns.

Aniella was so desperate to leave she didn't even take notice to the sudden compliment as she followed the cat at his heels, watching as his black pelt squeezed underneath the fence, where a hole had been dug.

"You know, I think you deserve much more than that old bat as your owner. You're real sweet." The tom said as Aniella watched her tail slip out of view as she climbed up the other side of the hole. "Come with me!"

The munchkin wasted no time, slipping underneath the fence with ease, paying no attention to the dirt that clung to her pelt as she pushed herself further, clambering upwards as she saw sunlight above her. As her head poked out of the hole, her jaw dropped.

A forest, full and lush. It lay just outside of the fence, calling her as each bird sang it's own symphony and each creature shuffled beneath the undergrowth. She stepped forwards, passing the helpful molly as she felt a tug pull her forwards, closer to the forest.

"It's calling me.." Aniella whispered, staring out into the large forest.

"It has called many before you, many cats go into those forest and even the mountains after it." The tom explained with a wistful look, staring at Aniella with a small smile.

The younger she-cat turned her head, staring at the cat in amazement. "There's more than just forests? There's other cats out there?" She asked, bewildered yet excited.

      The black cat nodded.

Aniella took another step forwards, and then another as the pull to join the forest became stronger. She almost began to bound forwards, but then stopped, turning to face the cat. "Thank you.." She trailed off, wondering the tom's name.

"It's Spiderfang, and thank you." He replied, suddenly standing a bit taller.

And with those final words, Aniella bounded into the forest, not looking back to that old home once more.

She belonged with the wild now.
