Maybe it's to prevent people from spamming the server with useless entries, but that sounds scary.

The punishment is there because we are sick of wading through entries that insult our intelligence, like this one:

Seriously, the staff here are not that dumb and don't like being treated like that.

Someone really did send us that as an entry, by the way. 2007 watermark and all.

Also, if someone were to slip through, then they're not only potentially scamming us out of money and buttons they didn't earn but they're also taking a prize away from someone who submitted a legit entry. It's not fair to anyone. If we don't have a decent punishment for trying, then there's not much deterrent from giving it a go. Deliberately cheating on an official site contest is a pretty stupid idea, and people deserve to be banned if they're trying to scam the site admins. They obviously have no respect for the rules, so why would we keep them around to break more in future?

If you think about it, it's not that bad.
Tess and Nick could lose real money and real items.
The cheater can just lose a couple of pixels and an account.
If you think about it.

I seriously laughed out loud when I saw that, especially with the 2007 watermark.

Can't you put up a "hall of shame" with the most obviously stolen entries?

surprisingly they've all been about as bad as that - nearly all the stolen image submissions have been standard wedding cakes, which gives the game away immediately

that one was the funniest, because it was the only one which provided an 'in-progress' photo with the entry

there was another good one which just copied the images and baking instructions straight from another cake website verbatim

Everything needs to be edible except for things holding the cake together (i.e. toothpicks).
