(Moonpaw)
(also sorry for the inactivity :'0 )
the exile wrote:"she has to be."
"you're sure?"
"i'm...no, but she's all we've got. i regret this as
much as you do, but it has to be done."
"she's just an apprentice...and after falconpaw...?"
"we don't have a choice."
moonpaw padded into camp, fresh from a hunting patrol.
setting her two water voles at the fresh kill pile, her gaze flickered
to the agitated glances that were cast on her from all around. her
clanmates were murmuring in hushed voices, the uneasy buzz only
dying down when she came near.
dismissing their whispering as frivolous gossip, moonpaw spotted
a black shecat engaged in deep discussion with a much taller grey tom.
"i can't believe her flinteyes! all these moons, we've all
trained side by side, and now she just went and..."
the shecat growled under her breath and shook her head in clear
frustration.
"we all trusted her. i trusted her more than anyone."
flinteyes posture was unflinchingly calm as he said quietly, "don't
be so fast to accuse her. though she is one of the prime suspects from
what little we've gathered, otterstar hasn't declared her verdict yet.
i tried reasoning with the clan to consider our other options, but they
won't listen."
his yellow eyes shut close for a moment.
"they're demanding justice."
"don't defend her. she deserves to die."
the words were spat out of her mouth like venom, and her frigid voice
was empty of the slightest hint of mercy. the utter coldness of her tone
chilled moonpaw to the core.
her sister often got into these...fits of anger on occasion. in an attempt
to defuse the tension, she approached with slight hesitation, saying
cautiously, "hey, nightpaw? what's wrong?"
the moment she spoke up, nightpaw's fur began to bristle. directing a gaze
burning with vehement resentment, she looked her straight in the eye.
a growl rumbled in her throat as she hissed, "i have nothing to say to you-"
her lips curled to bare her teeth as she added, "-traitor."
taken aback by her harshness, moonpaw was at a loss for words. did...did
her sister really think that she was responsible for all of the things that
had been happening over the last few weeks?
"traitor...?" the word felt foreign on her tongue.
"you know what you are. i don't have to spell it out for you." nightpaw's
tail lashed back and forth, cutting through the air like a claw through flesh.
"of all the cats in this clan...it had to be you."
flinteyes glanced between the two. his gaze directed towards moonpaw
maintained a mask of neutrality.
"i believe you've said enough, nightpaw. save your words for the trial."
"oh, trust me, i have plenty to say. and you know what? i'm not
going to wait. she didn't wait a second before she killed rosypaw, did she?
and shiverpaw? beaverpaw, doveroot?"
moonpaw had her ears pinned to her head as she avoided nightpaw's
accusing gaze.
"nightpaw...i'm sure you're misunderstanding all of this...i didn't
have anything to do with any of their deaths! i don't know why you..."
her voice quivered, "w-would think it was me..."
"liar!"
in a dark blur, nightpaw had launched herself at the trembling shecat, claws
outstretched. taken by surprise, adrenaline and instinct immediately kicked in
as moonpaw scored her own claws across nightpaw's muzzle. yelping in pain,
nightpaw backed off, red droplets raining from the gash as she jumped again
to pin moonpaw to the ground with increased vigor. raising a paw to rake it
across the wide-eyed shecat's throat, she was sudden stopped in her tracks as
she felt teeth digging into her scruff, roughly wrenching her off of moonpaw.
"nightpaw, control yourself!" flinteyes hissed through the
black fur clutched in his jaws. he struggled to keep the writhing apprentice
from wriggling out of his grasp.
moonpaw got to her paws, breathing heavily as she stared blankly at the
crazed state that nightpaw was in.
"you will pay for their deaths, you hear?! you will not harm a single hair
on any cat's pelt, ever again!" nightpaw yowled, fighting wildly to get her
mentor to release her.
a patrol of cats thundered into camp, their steps hurried once they had
caught wind of the brewing conflict.
"d-did moonpaw do that?" finchblossom gasped softly, nose pointing
at the deep clawmark that now marred nightpaw's face.
"she must have, what did i tell you earlier?" dustfire replied, eyes
narrowed in suspicion.
blinking in disbelief, finchblossom's head lowered slowly.
"i...i suppose you're right..."
otterstar's expression had hardened at the sight of the short brawl.
nightpaw's aggression slackened immediately once faced by the
surrounding warriors. flinteyes released her, and she slumped low to
the ground, wincing as the throbbing sting of the wound began to get to her.
"how did this happen?" otterstar inquired, cutting straight to the chase.
flinteyes explained to her quickly how the incident had occurred. once he
finished his brief summary, otterstar flicked her tail towards moonpaw.
"to the border with her. now."
finchblossom and dustfire moved quickly, each guarding one side of the now
frightened apprentice.
"w-what are you going to do to me?" moonpaw stammered as they
forcefully nudged her to the entrance.
"i'm sorry about this, i really am," finchblossom murmured
apologetically. dustfire chose not to say anything, simply moving
along mechanically to get the deed done.
"get nightpaw to breezefire, flinteyes." otterstar's posture
slumped slightly once the trio has disappeared out of camp. sighing
in defeat, she murmured, "she's not going to be happy to hear
about this..."
flinteyes nosed at nightpaw's unmoving figure, getting her stiffly
back on her feet.
"she's gone...she's gone now, because of me..." nightpaw
muttered quietly under her breath as she and her mentor
disappeared into the medicine den.
little did they know, all their efforts so far to drive out
the killer were in vain.
moonpaw, confused and hurt, found herself standing accepted
among thunderclan's ranks. they had listened to her pleas of
innocence and the injustice she had suffered at the hands of
her mother clan, and she found her place among them, quietly
promising to fight back against those who had turned their backs
on her.
another innocent gone and defecting to the opposite side of
the war zone, riverclan, and still a killer in your midst.
the kill wrote:the rain beat down, drizzle after drizzle battering the cat's drenched,
black pelt. nightpaw almost didn't notice, or simply didn't mind the rain.
something else was weighing heavier on her mind, at the moment,
heavier than the water that soaked her fur, heavier than the thick,
rolling storm clouds that caped the sky.
she was there. at the battle. i thought she was dead, like falconpaw,
but...no. she made it.
when she ran towards me, i almost thought she was coming to forgive
me, tell me that she still cared about me, that she was coming back
home and everything was going go back to the way things were.
but...her eyes. they used to be filled with a gentleness that always
felt welcoming to me. pale green pools of kindness.
now they burn with fire. a fire that was never there before, a fire
that i had sown in them. seething, glowing hatred.
her claws marred my face a second time.
my sister hates me. she hates riverclan, her home clan, because of me.
she's on the opposite side of a battlefield, because of me. for a moment,
i thought she sought to kill, so i sought to kill her. now, she sought to
kill me.
a streak of light snaked through the sky, connecting with a tree branch.
a sickening crack rang out as the branch was nearly halved from
the trunk.
the very willow tree which she had curled up under.
she went as still as stone, unable to budge from her position. her wide,
dazed eyes were trained on the branch that was now dangling
precariously over her head, only a couple fox-lengths up.
a dark figure in the treetops, obscured by the drooping, leafy boughs,
scuttled to the area now scorched by lightning.
they weighed their paws on the wounded branch.
just enough pressure.
the branch gave way, and came crashing down.
it was getting closer, and closer now, a brown blur heading straight
for her.
the sound of the rain beating the forest floor was drowning out.
the only thing nightpaw could focus on was the branch, and the fear
that froze her in place.
the thunder rumbled.
she pondered if her sister could forgive her, when they both were
in starclan.
nightpaw closed her eyes.
when she opened them, she was surprised not to find stars, or the
faces of her departed clanmates greeting her.
strangely, her bones were still intact and her body was not a sinewy,
crushed mess.
she was caked not in just rain water now, but by the muddy wetness
of the ground as well.
the fallen tree branch rested a mere mouse-length from her face.
she vaguely remembers a weight slamming against her body, forcing
her aside.
black spots swam in her vision as she made out a figure standing by
her for one moment, then gone up the willow tree the next.
they seemed to be chasing something down, rather ferociously at
that...a squirrel, or a bird? no, why would they be hunting in weather
like this...maybe that other cat she saw earlier?
she closed her eyes again with a sigh, still lying by the tree branch
that had nearly been the death of her. nightpaw wasn't in the mood
or the mindset to put two and two together. she wasn't interested
in getting up just yet, either. a patrol would find her, sooner or later,
anyway. all she was concerned about was that, for the moment,
she was alive.
the guard managed to save a life, riverclan. still, better be on
your toes because this isn't going to be the last time the murderer
will strike, and next time, you might not be so lucky.
