the kill wrote:morning light filtered through the leaf cover, dapples of gold dancing with
the shadows along the forest floor. they faintly illuminated a stark white
pelt slipping through the undergrowth, whose owner occasionally paused to lift their
head and scent the air. the shecat padded along with a sense of
urgency clear in her swift steps and vigilant expression.
emerging into a clearing where the trees could no longer provide her
with the cover of shade, she had to squint as harsh rays
of light poured in to assault her sensitive vision. slightly dazed by
the sudden change, rosypaw almost didn't notice the silhouette of a cat
seated at the edge of the cliffside. letting out a soft sigh
of relief, she called out their name, but they didn't budge an
inch from their position.
approaching them, she could hear the faint roar of water crashing and
thundering in a torrent somewhere far, far below, and realized that she
had arrived at the gorge. sending a nervous glance over the edge,
she caught a glimpse of the blurred outline of a river snaking
through the canyon. Mesmerized by the beautiful, yet unnerving sight for a
moment, she tore her gaze away and directed it back to the
cat who had initially caught her attention.
"where have you been? we've been looking all over for you..." rosypaw said,
sitting down beside the stone-still figure. they twitched an ear in acknowledgement
of her presence, but otherwise remained silent, seemingly engrossed in the view.
their eyes were focused on the far drop to the river, taking
on a wistful, contemplative look.
"sorry...it's just, it's beautiful, isn't it?" they finally spoke, although they
seemed to be speaking more to themselves than to rosypaw, who simply shrugged.
"yes, i guess it is. it looks really dangerous too, though.
you really shouldn't be sitting so close to the edge, you might-"
"-fall?"
rosypaw nodded. "yeah..."
the cat chuckled softly. "scared, are you?"
puffing her fur out indignantly, rosypaw shook her head insistently.
"no, i'm not, it's just-"
"you should be scared. anything...anything could happen here, if one's not careful..."
"which is why we should go back now.
everyone's worried sick about you, come on!"
turning her back to them, rosypaw got up and started walking
along the gorge, tail and chin raised slightly. scared, right...as if
there was anything scary about some old gully and a little stream
puttering through it.
"everyone's going to be worried about you too, after this."
pausing to take in their words, rosypaw had no time to react
when she felt a blunt force slamming against her body, sending her
over the edge. her breath hitching, her paws reached out to grab
frantically at a slab of overhanging earth, hind legs dangling wildly in
mid-air. she clung on, digging her claws in as she tried to
haul her weight back up to solid ground.
the cat's silhouette loomed over her from above, watching her struggle to
keep herself from falling the several meter drop that awaited her.
the glare of the sun was bright, much too bright, and it
blinded her from being able to see whatever expression they were wearing.
"p-please, just, just help me!" she stammered, her voice pleading.
the silhouette began to move away, and she could just barely hear
their pawsteps fading away into the distance over the crescendo of the
river splashing and foaming below her.
"please!" she cried out as a last effort, feeling her strength ebbing
away and the rocky dirt beginning to crumble under her grip. closing
her eyes tight, the dirt dislodged itself from the cliffside, and she
went catapulting down, down, only going faster and faster as the seconds
ticked by. she felt the wind whistling beneath her as the distance
between her body and the river closed.
the river, the roaring, the splashing, the crashing, the thunder
it was getting louder, louder, louder, and-
it took her.
someone is lurking among your ranks, riverclan, with unsavory intentions...
best find them before anything else is lost, yes?
