Kodiac took a deep breath. "I'm a..." He chose his words carefully. "I got in trouble with these two guys. Criminals, actually." The word caught her attention and drew her eyes off the road and drilled into him. She shook herself and looked back at the road, clearly tense. Who was this guy? She shouldn't have picked him up off the road. What was she thinking, picking a kalon out from the middle of the woods? Her mind raced as she tried to determine if he'd hurt her.
"You see, I work in solving crimes. I'm a detective. When kalons have an unsolved case, they come to me to solve them. Those two dummies were proven guilty when I found out it was them who robbed a local bank a few years back. They got out of prison and came straight for me."
Surprisingly, the driver didn't stop and kick him out for endangering her. Quite the opposite: she was intrigued, and wanted to know more. So he told her about his agency and joked about how he's seen the scariest parts of the city but wouldn't last a day in the woods. She laughed, and in turn told him about her life, how she's got no one left. And Kodiac felt a pang of something he couldn't describe. It wasn't fair for her to lead such a lonesome life. That's probably why she was so welcoming to him and eager to make a new friend, because she hasn't got any. Kodiac didn't push for details or judge her even when she admitted to shoplifting just to scrape by. "You won't arrest me now, will you?" She joked. "Nah, how would I get to the city if I did?" He laughed, "Also, that's not my job. I'm not a cop."
"You sort of are," she grinned, nudging him. He giggled. They talked through the journey, talking about passions, hobbies, and dreams. Somewhere along the way she mentioned her favourite breakfast food was french toast. He said his was eggs and bacon.
He didn't even noticed the buildings growing around them. He made it. He was back in the city and made a new friend along the way. He gave her a long hug, "Thank you for everything. If it weren't for you I would be stuck with the trees." She held him tight. "Thanks for the stories, drifter. You made the ride less lonely." They pulled away and looked into each other's eyes, a sparkle of connection glittering within them.

Kodiac asked, "Do you think I could call you sometime? Maybe we could get coffee?"
She smiled back, something inside her lighting up as she got a taste of what she was missing; friendship. "Yeah, but I haven't got a pen,"
Kodiac reached into his jacket and pulled out a blue writing pen. "You wouldn't happen to have a slip of paper? Maybe an old gum wrapper?" She shook her head.
Kodiac shrugged and handed her the pen, then held out his paw, "Just write on my hand." He said, and she smiled. A real, genuine smile that promised an everlasting friendship.

They said their goodbyes. Kodiac gave a final nod and a sweet smile. Then he turned and walked down the streets he knew so well, past the buildings he recognized, and up the apartment he knew better than the back of his hand. The mysterious kalon had driven away, off to her home or another adventure, he didn't know. Maybe she was heading back to the forest to pick up a stranger and tell stories all the drive back.

Up the cold cement stairs, through the heavy doors. He plunged a paw into his jacket pocket and pulled out some chiming keys. He found the golden one and slid it into the lock, hearing the chambers click into place. He turned the doorknob and stepped in, the musty sweet smell filling his nostrils and pleasing him more than fresh grass ever could. He disappeared into the kitchen and made himself some breakfast. French toast.

After some thought he concluded an innocent fib was the smartest way to play this. "Yeah, it was just a silly bet my friends and I made. They said I was too disconnected from the earth and wouldn't last a day in the forest. I countered, so to settle it, they dropped me off here," he said.
''Without any sort of tent, or food?" She gasped.
''No, nothing. Just the clothes on my back. Only way to truly know if you'd survive, right?" He laughed.
''I guess so," she shrugged and flashed him a sharp toothed grin.
Good, it seems she believed it.

The conversation was sort of stop-and-go. There were a few awkward pauses, despite her friendly personality. Even she couldn't quite keep the conversation going. It was a relief when the city he loved came over the horizon. He wished the car would go faster, and she could tell by the way his eyes never left the collection of buildings, as if to glance away for even a moment meant it could escape his grasp. "Eager to get home, eh?" She asked. Kodiac jumped, forgetting she was there. "Oh, yes. And I'm starving."
"I have some snack bars in the back," she offered, and Kodiac turned round to see a stash of food among many wrappers. He reached back and took an oatmeal bar. He hated oatmeal, but right now even that sounded delicious. He didn't see any harm in eating a perfectly packaged bar, as it seemed untouched, and frankly, his stomach was talking louder than his brain. The wrapper crinkled as he took the first bite. It was heaven. Maybe he didn't hate oatmeal so much, after all.
He didn't talk as he finished the bar, which was only a matter of seconds. She laughed and nudged him, "You were hungrier than I thought!" He grinned back at her, satisfied for the mean time with this morsel of food.
The buildings approached, and she pulled to a stop outside a train station. She pulled out a wallet and handed him some change. "Thank you," He said, giving her a hug. She held him close.

He exited the car and with a final wave goodbye, he got a smile in return and then she rolled off, leaving just the sour smell of car exhaust. Normally an unpleasant smell, but it comforted him as the scent of the city, so he didn't mind. He looked in his paw and saw more than enough change to get home by train. In fact, just enough to buy a granola bar, like that oatmeal one sitting perfectly in the vending machine she so conveniently dropped him off in front of. He smiled, thinking how clever she was. He murmured a thank-you and walked over to the machine, punched in the numbers, and down dropped the bar. He reached in the slot and pulled out a crisp package, then munched on it as he hopped down the steps into the station.

Kodiac hesitated, thinking for a moment. How could he trust a kalon he's never met? He didn't know if seating himself in the car meant more danger than the forest. He slowly took a step back, "Oh, uh... I just wanted directions, that's all."
The driver gave him a look that told him she could see right through him. I better work on my acting skills. That wasn't very convincing. He thought to himself.
The driver waited a moment, then asked, "You sure?" He nodded. She shrugged and drove away. Kodiac watched her car disappear into the distance, then sighed. More walking. At least he had avoided what could have been a very troubling situation. It wasn't worth the risk to go in that car. Doesn't matter now anyway, since it's gone.
Kodiac was getting hungrier and hungrier with ever step. Now the road was only useful for following into town, since he would not accept any rides. Then he might as well go into the forest? He looked over his shoulder and examined the trees.

He shook his head to snap him out of his daze. Hunger was getting the best of him, but he had to keep walking. Just... Keep... Going...

His feet dragged on as the sun traveled across the sky. He felt a surge of grief as he realized the city was still nowhere in sight and that meant he'd have to spend another night out here, alone. He was starving. Maybe he could pop into the forest, just for an hour or two, and forage for food. Yes, there was no alternative. He hadn't eaten in so long that even the grass looked tasty. He stepped off the road and into the woods.

He weaved through the trees, the grass strange but nice compared to the hard pavement. He stopped and put his paws on his hips and thought of where he could get some sort of nourishment. Hunting was out of the question. If he found a water source, he could find fish. Not that he likes fish all that much, but right now he was getting ready to nibble the daisies on the forest floor. He wandered around when he came across a pile of animal droppings and stopped dead in his tracks. His inexperience lent him fear as he figured out if it were from a bear.
No, just a deer.
He relaxed, and breathed out a long breath. He walked around it and continued his aimless journey. Then he realized what this meant! Hooray! Deer need water, and right now so did he. A deer wouldn't travel so far from water to be unable to reach it. So Kodiac took a look at his surroundings. Which way to go? Where would be find water?
He was no tracker so he couldn't trace the deer's steps as he wished he could. Instead he had to pick a direction and start walking.

A sound, so soft, so faint in the distance... Bubbling, gurgling, swirling water! Yes! He gave a shout of joy and sprinted towards it, crashing onto the back. He scooped up some water in his paws.

He put it to his lips and gulped it down. He felt strength returning, and leaned down to drink right from the river.
It was a small river, or perhaps a large stream. It didn't matter, anyway. All that mattered was he had water, and maybe even some food.
He drank his fill and stood up again with a satisfying "Ahh"
He looked into the water and noticed a few flickers of fin, a swish of a slimy tail. Yes! Everything was turning out great. Now it was time to catch some dinner.
Kodiac found a sizable stick and sharpened it with a jagged rock. He was a city boy, but he was also smart. He then stood at the river bank, poised like a snake ready to strike, and held the makeshift spear above his head, waiting for the right moment.
SPLASH! The stick struck the water and hit the pebbles below. No fish. It's alright, he told himself, and righted himself. A glistening body slid into view. SPLASH! Another miss. He tried not to get discouraged.

It took hours before he considered stopping. His hungry drove him further, telling him to keep trying. Eventually, his efforts were rewarded. He struck down and felt something under the end of his spear. He pulled it out of the water and revealed a small, measly fish wriggling on the stick, spraying him with slimy water.

Now, to make a fire. How do you do that again? Kodiac looked around. "Aha!" He exclaimed and grabbed two rocks. He gathered some wood and made a crude fire pit. Then he crouched on the ground over it and hit the two rocks together.
Nothing happened. Confused, Kodiac struck again, and again, and again until his paws were sore. Was he doing it right? Why wasn't he getting any sparks? He angrily threw the rocks into the river and buried his face in his paws. He didn't belong here. He didn't know anything about the woods. Sure, he got a fish. But it took hours and he couldn't even eat it. He looked up. The sun was going down. It would be another cold night.

If he was going to make a fire, it better be now, before it got too dark and too cold. He peeled some drying bark off a few trees. Splintered his spear into thin pieces, thinking maybe they'd be more readily eaten by flame. Then he found a large branch, and snapped off useless twigs until he made two new sticks. He lay one flat on the ground and held the other upright between his paws. He then rolled it in his palms, trying to drill a hole into the other stick. He made a small dent and put some tinder in it. Then he rolled it in his paws faster, trying to go as fast as he could. Some smoke streamed out. His eyes shone with hope. Faster, and the smoke flowed like a river.
But he didn't get his flame. Where was it? Smoke meant fire, right? He groaned and massaged his sore paws. He shoved them in his pockets to warm them. A finger touched metal. What's this? He pulled out his apartment key, and examined the shiny metal surface. It reflected light into his eyes and made him wince. Of course! He looked towards the sun. It was setting, but maybe there was still hope. He positioned the key so that it reflected the sun's concentrated heat into the tinder. More smoke. More hope.

But nothing. The sun went down and he stared at the tinder pile, the pile of wood that could have supported a fire. Making a fire was not as easy as he thought it would be. Feeling drained, he lay down in the grass away from the river bank. Now he missed the city more than ever. He tried to conquer the forest, show that he could make it, but life isn't a fairy tale. The forest had thrown him back in his place and reminded him who's boss. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep.
