heh heh
*nervously smiles and walks away*
Well, not quite like that. There's a bit more of an important role (as in, she doesn't disappear forever after that), but its not anything huge either.
Just a little side thing.

Edit: I'm working on the next section... IN WORD!
Yes, I have learned from my mistakes :)

MOAR :D

Chapter 2k
-------->Continuation
“Hmm… Come with me,” She says, beckoning me forward. Grimacing at the stairs, she walks down them, slightly hunched over, clutching her stomach.
“Why?” I ask again.
“I need a distraction, and also because if your awake, that means you can help pack for home,” She says grumpily. Not particularly wanting to be around her at this time, especially in the morning, I feel the extreme urge to run upstairs.
Immune to my discomfort, she trots over to the packs.
“Grab the food,” She says, snapping her fingers. I lug the heavy boxes over and she starts to throw them in.
“Why do we have to do this now? Why not later?” I ask, remembering the days after I had met her and before we had met Coon. I had asked a similar question when Grasswhistle had redone the hippy van so it would hold the fruits for drying.
“Why wait? There’s only so much life left in all of us. It’s going to run out one day, and I’m going to be able to look back and see not a moment of my life was wasted,” She says, roughly stuffing a poor pack of rice into the bag. I winced. Is everyone freaking depressing now?
“I suppose,” I say, trying to avoid another melodramatic talk.
Grasswhistle looks faintly disgusted.
“Shallow,” She mutters. I see the scars again, dark and unsightly against her skin.
“Fine then, PMS on your own,” I grumble, walking towards the stairs.
“Oi, still got to finish packing,” She calls, unconcerned. Sighing, I turn around and come back, cursing myself for my conscience.
“So, is there a reason for the frustrated storming off? I doubt it’s completely because of my lovely personality.”
“Everyone’s becoming a dismal, miserable person.”
“And why not? Tis the Apocalypse,” She says, casually flinging the A-word. I flinch instinctively.
“Why do we have to dwell on it though? What’s the purpose?”
“There is none.”
“So why do I have to put up with it?” I ask, irritated.
“It’s better than a sharp stick in the eye.”
“But still annoying.”
“Your consistent whining is annoying. Am I particularly concerned?” She says, raising an eyebrow.
“Hmmm.”
“My point is, everyone can’t be some impenetrable wall of apathy all the time. Even Ice has his soft moments.”
I laugh.
“I’m serious you know.”
“Oh really?”
“Why yes, really.”
“How come none of the younger kids complain?”
“Laurels and Coon you mean? I don’t think Flyby or Break do much talking.”
“Yes, them,” I say, aggravated with her again.
“Kids are flexible. Also, I don’t think it’s quite hit them yet, the implications of all this.”
“I dunno about that. Laurels is intelligent enough to realize this isn’t just a game.”
“True, but have you seen her smile in the last three months? She’s not happy either.”
“So what’s the point in life?”
“To make the most of what you have,” Grasswhistle says, banishing such an intricate question with barely a moment’s thought.
“And how do you figure that out?”
“I’ve had a lot of time to think about it. For the past eight years of my life, the only thing I wanted was a chance to live. I’ve got it now, and I’m going to use it,” She says, shoving the food down into the bag before doubling over.
“You okay?”
“No,” She says tersely.
“Okay, just clarifying.”
“Could you drop the retard act a moment and be a bit more serious?”
“Everyone else can be serious for me.”
“Shallow. I repeat, shallow,” Grasswhistle says, wrinkling her nose.
“Are you any better?”
“I would hope to think so. Considering as you have no grounds to accuse me of otherwise,” She says, frowning.
“I suppose I don’t.”
“Well, run along now, pack up some more stuff.”
“You can’t just tell me to run along. I’m not four you know.”
“I wish you were sometimes. So much easier to dangle someone upside down when they weigh about as much as a sack of kittens.”
“What a unique analogy.”
“Why thank you. I’m sure I’ll appreciate that more later once I’m attempting to strangle Coon.”
With that delightful image of my head, I ran to the next bag, completely ready to head back home.
* * *
"I'm staying here," Laurels announced, rifling through the bags one more time.
"What?" I ask in disbelief.
"So is Ice and Rosethorn," She adds, plucking something out of her pack.
"Yes, a vaction!" Coon crows, pumping his fists.
"Nothing's going to get done without you or Rose breathing down our necks," I say, reiterating Coon's point, but more professionally.
"I heard that," Rose calls from across the room.
"Still."
"You managed well enough before us," She says drily. I realize that She, Rose, and Ice were the last three people to join the group. "I'm going to give you a schedule anyway. You probably need it. Anyway, you guys will come back in a few days anyway to help us transport everything. In the meantime, make sure Coon and Dagger actually do their work."
"Hey, I do my fair share of work," Dagger says petulantly. "I'd say I've worked my butt off in the last few days."
"Suuuure," I say, quirking an eyebrow.
"Oh, and on your way back, keep track of Break. Badger's going to watch Flyby." Oh the joy of being lumped with the invalids. "Dagger will carry the chickens."
I snigger.
"Will they poop on me?" Dagger asks seriously.
"... I'm not quite sure how to answer that question," Laurel's says, equally serious.
"Is that all?" Grasswhistle asks impatiently, crouched by the exit, bag already slung over her shoulder.
"Umm, watch out for bears."
"Obviously."
"And keep Coon away from Dagger."
"Again, obvious."
"Then you're free to go," Laurel's says, ushering us to the door.
Outside, the sky's not as bright, which makes it considerably colder than yesterday. Pulling my jacket closer, I turn around just in time to see the door close. Geez, I feel wanted.
Turning instead to Break, I grab his wrist.
"Come on Break, we're going home," I say, though I'm not quite sure he can hear me, locked up in his head.
* * *
The moment we reach the fields in front of our home, I feel like abandoning Break and running home. But, having coaxed him over every freaking fallen log and stream in the woods, I'm not about to stop.
It's fairly late in the evening, but I can still make out the rusted train tracks that cut across our fields. Coon whoops and runs ahead, apparently having forgotten the last eight hours of walking. Even Break perks up, mumbling something under his breath.
"Oh sh-" Dagger begins.
"MY EARS!" Coon wails, covering over the last half of his swear word.
"What?" I ask, irritated.
"The chickens pooped on me," He hisses, trying to shake it off his arm.
Apparently the chickens are happy to be home too.

Sorry for the weird humor, I'm feeling particuarly blehh today.

Ahhh, awesome post today : P I love how you write conflict between your characters, you write it so well that it feels realistic, and you can really feel the tension. I was actually getting all annoyed with Grasswhistle right along with Jarrah! xD

Haha, the chickens.

Alex, be nice. Dun shun.
Jabber is a wondeeful people.

And why thank you Angel :D Phil and Clara are comic relief along with Coon, so I rather like them.
And Viriami, Ice needs some alone time... NO. Not like that. Not GNSS (heh sorry). But he has other reasons for staying behind. Its part of a subplot that you might recognize from the Bereaved when this book goes on some more
