FireFeather sat back, feeling his world fall apart around him. SoulPaw, his youngest kit... he flinched at the thought. He tried hard not to show tears, but knew he was fighting a downhill battle. Water well in his eyes and he almost wanted to just go back to sleep and wait for the killer to finally be done with whatever he was doing.
FireFeather shook himself, looking for his other kits. He was thankful to find BreezeFire was with the two, but he still padded over quietly. He didn't want to leave his two daughters anymore. He wanted to sleep beside them, keep an eye over them at all times, but he knew stopping a murderer would be impossible.
"BreezeFire..." FireFeather started as if he were going to say something, but fell silent, simply blinking away more tears.

Aphidstar padded into camp, a silver carp gripped tightly in his jaws. When he spotted the group of cats surrounding the apprentice's den, his curiosity piked. Then he noticed the tears in Firefeather's eyes, and the scent of death in the air. "The killer is still here..." he murmured.

Soulpaw's body had been discovered and the worst fear of every Riverclanner
had been confirmed: the killer was still with them. With their fear realized,
cats started shouting who they thought the killer was. Finally, Aphidstar had
to yowl in order to calm his clanmates.

"Alright," he growled. "Who do you think killed Soulpaw?"

One by one, the cats called out their choice. With a sinking feeling, Maplepetal
realized that the majority had voted for her. She started shaking. She was the
deputy of the clan! She wouldn't touch a hair of any of her clanmates!

"Maplepetal," said Aphidstar, voice cracking with regret, "the clan has chosen.
You are to be exiled for your crime of killing Soulpaw. You may not step foot
onto Riverclan territory lest you be killed."

Maplepetal's mouth opened and closed before she could finally get some words
out. "I-I'm not the killer!" she stammered. "I saw them! I saw who it was!"

"Get out," growled one of her clanmates. "You're not welcome."

Looking around, the deputy--former deputy, now--understood that she wouldn't
be heard. Instead of saying another word, she turned and fled the territory.
She lived as a rogue, hoping that one day she could come back to her clan and
return to life as a warrior and mother of her four kits. Little did the clan know
that Maplepetal was innocent, and had caught a glimpse of the killer as they
had lunged at Coldpaw so many days ago.

Later that day, Aphidstar named Echowhisper the new deputy as her experience,
shrewdness, and kindness made her the perfect choice. In addition, he announced
that Nightpaw and Lilacpaw were almost ready for their assessments, and in a
couple of moons, would talk with their mentors regarding their trials.

You have made the wrong choice, Riverclan! Once of your witnesses has
been lost and the clock keeps ticking.

Windsong lay curled up, kits sleeping beside her. However, not all were still.
Blossomkit stirred and groaned. She was tired but also hungry. She wriggled her
way out of the kit-pile and padded out of the nursery. No one noticed the kit in
the twilight as she walked over to the fresh-kill pile and picked out a mouse for
herself. Why not treat herself? she figured. She'd heard that apprentices didn't
eat at all, and they were due to become apprentices soon.

The mouse tasted strange but Blossomkit didn't think much of it until her throat
squeezed on its own. She tried to call for help but found herself unable to do so.
As she chocked to death, she remembered Lilypaw's voice faintly saying:
Deathberries can kill a full-grown cat in less than a minute. Apprentices and kits
die within seconds. And then she was gone.

Blossomkit has died, Riverclan! How many helpless kits and apprentices will
have to die before you find the killer?

Breezefire woke up and padded to the apprentice's den. "You guys are still ok right?" she asked her kits, looking at them, Still two kits left, still two kits. She thought, wishing Soulpaw was there to calm her soul. She walked back to the warrior's den. "Firefeather, our children are still safe." she hissed, trying not to wake other cats, but probably failing.

Lilacpaw
Lilacpaw looked up at her mother, and looked back at the ground. She slowly nodded, her eyes glued to the ground. "I'm okay, I guess. As okay as you can be during a time like this." Lilacpaw sighed, and curled back up in her nest. She hardly felt like doing anything, the pang of her brothers death still fresh. She felt responsible, in a way. She was laying right next to him. She should've woken up. But she hadn't. The murderer had slipped through her grasp. Lilacpaw closed her eyes, attempting to find sleep again. Not that sleep was any better, when your plagued with nightmares. Lilacpaw sighed. She hadn't eaten in a few days. Maybe she should get some food....

Windsong wasn't suprised at all when she woke up yet again to find one of her kits missing. After all, Blossomkit had always had the habit of wondering off by herself. She had no reason to be concerned though, since she never ventured out of camp. With a quiet yawn, the queen slowly got up and maneuvered around her sleeping kits, feeling for the entrance and padding out. A sigh escaped her muzzle as she spoke "Blossomkit? Come back inside, it's too early to be outs-" She stopped as she felt something beside her front paw, and only then did the scent of death hit her nose as well as blossomkit's. Her blood turned cold and her voice shook "B-Blossomkit?" With a quick nudge of her nose, the kit rolled to the side and she could scent the death berries from her mouth "Blossomkit! W-Wake up! Blossomkit!" The shriek broke through the quiet morning as the queen frantically yowled "Robinfeather! Lilypaw! Blastclaws!" Windsong called quickly, hoping beyond hope that her little kit could be revived.
