He's been locked in monastery his whole life, and tends to the herd of unicorns that live there.
Sequestered from the outside world.

Eventually he glimpses a man over the wall, a passing knight, and he falls in love at first sight.
His right eye turns black, and he worries he's cursed and no longer pure, so he tries to always hide it with his hair.
