the girl w/the toxic sadness who had once made a boy happy.

He had to admit, his girlfriend was beautiful. The way her blonde hair framed her face and fell down her back would make any guy swoon. Her bright, green eyes were so inviting, as she always plainly showed how she felt through them. She tried to lie sometimes to him, not wanting to show him her true feelings, but it was all too easy to see through his baby girl. He knew her too well. Not to mention, she did had a decent body. An hourglass figure. What was not to love? Her personality was a bit of a mess, though it was in a good way. It was refreshing to love someone with a bombshell attitude, not caring if people judged her or not.

But the way she stood in front of him, showed a side of her she absolutely hated showing to him. Because as much as he found her beautiful, she looked ugly when she cried and felt sad. Her beautiful face crumpled into a scrunched, red mess. Tears dripped down her face with no care to how they marred her smooth skin. Her eyes became swollen as soon as she started crying, and all of her words came out hard to understand and slurred. Liam decided that he did not like seeing her look this way. He hated seeing his whole world unravel right before him, sniffling and clinging to him so desperately.

“I don’t want to leave!” she yelled. Liam held his girl to his chest, his throat tight. He rubbed her back in circles, trying his best to comfort her. Everything about this was wrong. He shouldn’t have to see her this way. She shouldn’t have to show him. She shouldn’t have to leave him. He shouldn’t have to dump her. Every single thing about this moment screamed wrong. It reverberated in him with such strength. His bones ached, his blood boiled, his skin screamed; this isn’t what it’s supposed to be. And she knew it too. The way she sobbed into his chest, leaving tears and snot behind.

"I know baby girl,” he comforted. “I don’t want you to go either.” Oddly enough, as sad as he was, Liam could not cry. Maybe it was because the girl in front of him so desperately needed him to be strong right then. Maybe it was because as much as he did love her, there was a part of him that didn’t want to be with her anymore. Maybe it was because he had used up too many of his tears, or too less of them. Whatever the reason, Liam did not cry. Instead, he held onto her with an odd tensity. Somewhere between tightly and loosely, though it certainly wasn’t half heartedly.

For around ten more minutes, his baby cried into his arms. She held on with her hands so tightly, he was absolutely positive it must have been uncomfortable to put such strain on them for so long. All at once, she stopped. No more tears, no more scrunched up face. All that was left was a red face, swollen eyes, and a tired, tired look that emanated from her very soul.

Liam felt relief to see her begin to pick up pieces of herself that she had let break in front of him. Brushing the back of his hand against her cheek, he looked at her with some form of hope. She took a deep, grounding breath before looking up at him. “What do you want to do?” she asked.

At that moment, Liam felt the strongest desire in the whole wide world to look away from her intense eyes that screeched for love and affection. But he didn’t. Because what kind of person would he be then? Instead, Liam sighed, closing his eyes, and scuffed his shoe on the ground. “You, mostly.” he replied, his voice soft.

“Stop doing that,” she said, her voice suddenly low with annoyance, looking away from him. “You can’t always rely up there.” Standing on her tiptoes, she tapped his head. “You let that get in the way of us too often. Make a decision based off of this, babe.” she said strongly, jabbing her finger into his heart.

An awkward silence filled the air between them. He felt impossibly distant from her. “I think we should break up.” he answered quietly, his face contorting into pain and hurt.

As Liam struggled with his inner problems, and Avery began to cry individual tears with the most toxic sadness he’d ever seen, the wind blew around the feel-too-much couple that summer night.
