there is a nonzero chance im going to cry bc 700 words isnt enough for my chapters to be complete but ... hello exercise in narrative brevity here i come... also im definitely going to revamp this later bc i have plans for this plot post-comp

note to self: klaes and caretaker meeting can possibly be combined? that makes room for another chapter to explore the conflict more?? hm


character notes

faustine is a budding mage who has great potential but is pretty clumsy. she accidentally summons the soul of a demon king during her final magic.. .. witch trial thing and the soul is placed into a vessel and thats how mallius becomes a mortal ... hes super grumpy abt it at first but slowly becomes v loyal and attache to faustine bc of how hard she tries and her positive demeanor (also hes bound by contract to be her familiar)!!!

mephis is my MOSTLY blind fortune telling travelling pos who lost his sight after touching an ancient artifact (the philosophers stone) but im adjusting his story to where that the stone is... embedded in his eye HENCE HIS HETEROCHROMIA LOL .. hes one of my kals already..... hes sociable and kind of a mystic, kind of sarcastic, i rly like him fndjgkd

caphea and capheus ... theyre twins born to a powerful kingdom and caphea's just a bit older than capheus so shes.. become this cruel despot of a queen who is super eager for power and shes so ambitious while her brother is just kind of discontent... he really cares abt her tho.. i actually wrote him up for a different kal entry so i can link that

uhhhh apolla is a new character but i highkey based her off of the old god from lady of the shard except less yandere

the boneseer is one of my older characters, i wrote a piece abt her somewhere... shes semi-immortal and lives a hermity life in the woods and shes a true seer, not like mephis,,, instead of seeing the paths of fate and having to guess which one they're steering towards like mephis does, mallistra just KNOWS

the caretaker is a beast born of the forest and i made a .. .. demo vn for him sfkds sdkdill never finish it but hes an immortal entity who is bound to the forest he was born in bc he is its protector. hes got a lot of influence and power over the forest but he cant leave bc hed just. die, i guess

klaes is a kal of mine and hes just a simple boy living alone in the mountains, ive got his entry too.... .. and i think thats abt it

tentative chapter outline 1:

x. a destiny decided - intro

"she was destined to do great things from the moment she was born."
a peasant-born girl, a vision, a decree by a village elder, and a journey begins. faustine sets off to pay the ancient boneseer a visit, her friend mallius in tow.
x. the seer's warning - a meeting with malistra

"if you do this, you will die. if you don't, everyone else will. pick your poison."
malistra unloads a heavy burden onto faustine, discussing options and ways to best the odds. the seer recommends finding an acquaintance of hers to aid her in her journey.
x. the old god - apolla rises

"i wasn't always this desperate."
eons in torment. all she has now is her regret. it's time to erase all that has been.
(cut to apolla/possibly in 2nd or 1st pov?)

x. you do what for a living? - a meeting with mephis

"i don't trust anyone with more than one eye color."
faustine and mephis meet. mallius butts heads. privately, they talk about mallius' past with faustine. meanwhile, apolla begins the apocalypse.
x. the twin galaxies - caephea and caepheus

the trio attempt to appeal to the most powerful queen in the land. despite their best efforts, they are no match for apolla. apolla mocks caephea in her pursuit of power and decries her creations. swarms of cicadas reach the castle. mephis gives the philosopher's stone to faustine before both he and mallius are lost in the chaos. faustine escapes, in tears, to the woods.
x. into the woods - the caretaker

"immortals are not as infallible as you think."
faustine's meeting with the caretaker of the forest sheds some light on the nature of immortals, and also the philosopher's stone.
x. a short reprieve - a meeting with klaes

in a valley untouched by apolla's pestilence, a boy living alone gives faustine a short reprieve. faustine has an epiphany.
x. a goddess and a girl - faustine meets apolla

"you and i — we're not that different after all."
apolla agrees to talk to faustine. a miracle occurs. through mutual understanding, apolla changes her mind.
x. all respect to heaven, i like it here - end

faustine rejects apolla's offer to become immortal. the apocalypse ends. stability is returned to the world. despite the suffering and carnage and pain, faustine asserts she'd rather stay a mortal.
x. let the great world spin - epilogue

caepheus is mourned. mephis stays by caephea's side as a royal adviser. mallius faustine returns from the ash.
