I finished this design faster than I expected to! This lovely lady is dressed up in an outfit from the "turn-of-the-century Europe" the time range being 1890-1900. The quote above inspired the idea that she watches over the dogs of war, keeping them by their heels during times of peace and permitting them freedom in times of war. She is Lady Death.

why did you chose this quote?/how does it represent this character? Loretta has heard about many wars and battles before her time, witnessed one first hand, and has seen dozens that took place even after her passing. No matter which way you slice it, there are always countless deaths on each side, regardless of whoever 'wins.' Every side involved experiences heavy loss and grief. Mrs. Rose knows full well that there are more casualties than meets the eye, that loss and heartache is a causality itself, and that neither side of the fighting truly wins.

—» KOMAINU is a name based off the komainu, statue pairs of dog-lion-like creatures that are said to ward off misfortune and evil spirits. In a more general sense, they are regarded as protectors.
—» LUPUS means wolf, but the name was also chosen because of an analogy that I thought could be made. “In ancient times, the constellation was considered an asterism within Centaurus, and was considered to have been an arbitrary animal, killed, or about to be killed, on behalf of, or for, Centaurus.” Lupus could've been arbitrarily killed for being associated at all to an opposing side during war, not even necessarily having been a threat to them.

Throughout the ages she has gone by name different names: The Soul Keeper, The Gardener, and Lady Death; but there were only a small amount of souls who knew the name she was given on the day she was born. Florence knew her name was all but forgotten and was to be known only for the titles of which the living would give her or rather what her role was.

There are many different legends of the Death from all over the world. He may go by different names but His story rarely changes from culture to culture. Everyone knows that when He shows up there is a soul that is about to be gleaned and taken to the Land of the Dead, but what most people do not know is the rest of the legends.

Where does the soul go once it is taken to the Land of the Dead?

This is where Florence comes into play. Her role is to watch over the souls that come to the Land of the Dead. To her they are each a beautiful rose just waiting to blossom in the peacefulness of Death’s Garden. Florence tends to her roses with a gentle and loving hand. She reads them poetry and praises them as they grow and blossom. Her roses have a special part in her heart and she does her best to make sure their new lives are full of love, peace, and happiness.

Not wanting the one who guards the souls to ever be in danger or be lonely, Death gave his Gardener two Hellhounds which she lovingly calls Crexaura (female –by her feet) and Ayizhar (male – at her side). They are there to protect her from souls that put up a fight or mortals that are foolish enough to enter the Land of the Dead in search for lost loved ones or revenge.

Death often stops by to visit Florence and to check up on her. They will walk His gardens arm and arm, Death listening to every word Florence speaks as she talks about her lovelies, as the Hellhounds weave between their feet. Death has a special sort of relationship with Florence. It is one of friendship, companionship, and at times love. While roses are her all time favorite flower within her Garden, Florence has several other special flowers she tends. Each are gifts from Death himself as a way to show His affection and gratitude for all that she does. She has a special greenhouse that she keeps these special flowers. Within you can find Youtan Poluos, Chocolate Cosmoses, Ghost Orchids, Jade Vines, Black Bat Flowers, and so many more rare flowers.

Out of all the flowers in Death's Garden, Florence's favorite is the soul that took shape of a Middlemist Red Rose and it is the oldest flower within the Garden. It has been there longer than she can ever remember, but whenever she touches its petals she feels the warmth and power of Death himself - for it is his very soul.
